The first Megami Tensei is the best game of the series, it had the best OST and design, regardless of what Kaneko cultists and post-Okada fans say. I didn't like the direction Megami Tensei took since the second game with the overworld setting and prefered it when it was only a dungeon crawling game. SMTI was a rehash of MTII, with a better beginning and went downhill after the nuke.

I’m also glad you agree that the law and chaos endings are better than neutral this time but I really had a lot of fun with smt2 when I played it earlier this year

Finally finished a playthrough of this game so I can finally watch this video lmao. I think the game is an interesting time overall and I loved a lot of the usual Atlus trademark inconspicuous shit the game doesn't expect you to find like needing to circle around certain statues counter-clockwise early on to enter the second half of the game for a brief moment, Getting Cerberus as a partner after playing more fucking Devil Busters in some random lab that needs a code to even enter, or giving a specific food to a hungry dude in some random house to get an item that'll get you the good ending. As much as I hated actually going and fusing them, the weaker demons that help you progress through the second half of the game are also a neat idea. While a very primitive game, it does a lot of things that help it stand out and have an identity which I can respect!

A phone sequel to Soul Hackers sounds so interesting

So, smt 4 is a throwback to 2?

Coming back to the Vengeance route. Simply not having the awful level scaling alone makes the game so much better. Combat system and character building systems feel the best in the series, though the boss design could've used more work. Easily available elemental block items felt like a straight up bad design decision, the game makes it a bit too easy to prevent bosses from using their turns. Quality of life changes are neat, small things like the demon hangout give them a lot more personality. Field battles feel a bit more exciting with the special spawns and chain battles, but they could've utilized the latter a lot more. I'm at the final area but I recall like one angel boss fight where the chain mechanic was used. In Vengeance the writing is more cohesive and overall better, but it's still not particularly well written story. You now have more fleshed out law and chaos reps, plus a more central villain with established motive, but it still doesn't feel all that memorable. Vanilla game had the same issue as IV with it feeling and most likely literally being cobbled together from 2-3 different scripts. But IV had more intense atmosphere and stronger individual story beats that carried it despite it's flaws. Regarding the maps and exploration, I think vanilla IV did it great, but they've just gone downhill from there. There was some semblance of dungeons without them being pure cock torture like what Strange Journey liked to throw at you. And most importantly, enemies were visible on the map and faster than you, but you could avoid them consistently if you learned their movement patterns. I have no idea why IV:A did away with this, as it essentially removes all danger from the exploration in favour of nothing. If only they managed to combine the combat, fusion and character mechanics of Vengeance with IV's exploration and atmosphere they'd have the perfect 3D SMT.

I think the cutesy mascot demons could work in live action if they were puppets and all the scenes they are in are directed like Evil Dead.

Great game and great vid I will say there's a few other unique skills that can help a lot during the final boss, wich you can trade to other sleepers but only though fusion and since they cost SP there all more or less mutatly exclusive and have to compete with using the Prevent command when it comes to the ulmiate boss however I really recommend using Haven and Hell held by Hecatia instead of Social Distoration. It inverses the buffs and debuffs of each team so its a lot more convenient.

I SUPPOSE daleth beign made to fall in love with a fairy is meant to be his punishment for trying to do the same to you and constantly shirking responisbility after losing to you. still a very...weird way to just anticlimactically end the storyline of a character who was built up to be more important than he actually was, like the chaos hero if he ever actually managed to do anything notable and jsut got taken out like a joke early on.

I would really like to see modern remakes of these classic games bc even if the gameplay may not hold up completely, the stories definitely do.

I honestly want this one remade the most out of any of the old school titles. One of my all time favorite mainline titles. You can cut the atmosphere with a knife and the art style is so dense and unique. It’s the game that goes the most into the cyberpunk aesthetic and setting. The 2nd volume of the Kaneko works is the perfect companion for this because the artwork is something to behold.

Nice video. I've only played 3 and 5 with a little of 4. Besides 3 and 5 I didn't even know the games were linked storywise (well now I wonder if 4 is the continuation of 3 instead of 5 as I imagined). I thought it was more like FF.
