Lyrical & Sweet "The Dancing Girl Of Izu" by Yasunari Kawabata
"The Dancing Girl Of Izu" is the first publication hit by young kawabata. There were many films made in the past, indicating the book was loved by Japanese people. I have never seen the movies so now I would like to see. I thought the dancing girl depicted in the book are much younger than any actresses who portrayed. I read this book with very high anticipation after reading major Kawabata's books. "The Dancing Girl Of Izu" is indeed very lyrical and naively beautiful. At the end of the story, I was in tears thinking of my youth, traveling alone in the beautiful place, discovering the nature and people you meet.

Strong & Beautiful Geisha in "Snow Country" by Yasunari Kawabata

"Snow Country" by Yasunari Kawabata had been my reluctant choice of Japanese literature due to the subject matters (Geisha) for a long time. However, I ended up admiring Kawabata's respectful treatment of Japanese women as Geisha and depicting Japanese nature of countryside and its beauty. My understanding of Geisha in Japanese culture has also subtly shifted to more favorable encompassing its ...
Kawabata's "Beauty And Sadness" is a psychological thriller that dealt with moral questions

"Beauty And Sadness" starts with very shocking incident that makes readers upset. It becomes a psychological thriller after midway that you can not put it down. I felt angry with the story that dealt with men's egoistic crime that went unpunished under a certain atmosphere of Japanese culture. But at the end you marvel at the author's smart story telling that would refused to tell 100%.
Talking About Summer Splendor and Aging

Walking the neighborhood and finding splendid summer blooming shrubs like "Crape Myrtle" and "Rose of Sharon", I ended up thinking of annual plants and me getting old. People live longer these days but with price. Aging is inevitable however long you live. Knowing the quality of life is a myth, still you want to live happily ever after. So you live with the aging, good or bad.
Serene & Meditative "The Sound Of The Mountain" by Yasunari Kawabata

"The Sound Of The Mountain" by Kawabata is quiet and ultimately life affirming masterpiece. I hesitated in the beginning due to the depictions of bad Japanese culture of male dominance. But ultimately it is triumphant life affirming story of an older man who faces many tumultuous life incidents of his family members. Each characters of the story are well developed, sometimes strong in a reserve...
Unwelcome Bugs & Not Fruiting Tomatoes

I suffered enough from Flea Beetle attacks. Today, I found swarms of "Harlequin Bug" on my Broccoli plants. Pests are one thing but not-fruiting Tomato plants are another. I have no idea the healthy looking tomato plants hardly have any fruits, though flowering. But somehow, I feel it is fun to see all those nature activities.
I aspire to be a DIY person.

Fortunately, I have a time. I would like to be a DIY person. I used to be like that when I was young. But somehow, as I get older, I find myself loathing the problems I have to fix. I think DIY could be a fun hobby if you make it to be something that I can learn and beneficial to my declining brain. So, slowly I started to fix the sprinkler head, dishwasher, and toilet fill valve.
Front Garden In June, 2024

One young seedling tree (Japanese snowbell) has been struggling. Most of perenn...

Daikon is the vegetable I really feel nostalgic about my growing years in Japan. My Grand-Ma used to thin the seedlings of Daikon and use them as veggies in the Miso soup. Serene But Eventful "The Old Capital" By Yasunari Kawabata

"The Old Capital" is my second serious reading of the books by Kawabata. Contrary to my expectation, the story is very abrupt and eventful. People in the story are either unaware or not showing their emotions much toward the otherwise jarring truth. Tolstoy has been difficult author for me ever since I became a book lover in my later years. But I really enjoyed his short story called "The Death Of Ivan Ilych". I got used to using the treadmill for exercise where I lost a privilege of using nature trail. I settle for about 7000 steps, 4 mile/hour speed and 1 hour of using the treadmill. With changing the speed and the incline, I could get a very good workout. Definitely, I can get more intensive workout with treadmill than simply walking along the trails.

Thank you for sharing here about this fictional piece, based on the actual cultural tradition of the Geisha.
Hello ExpatKaz, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to upload your videos. love listening to you talk about your knowledge of plants and your review of books; they're very comforting. wish you well.
Thank you for your kind words. I wish I had more places to walk around. I hope I 'll find a nice lake or stream. I miss water.
@@expatkaz742 I hope you find a lake or stream too, and when you do, you could post that as well. Also, do you have any hobbies, like playing any instruments or are there any more films that you haven't reviewed yet?
@@vampyreberry As far as films are concerned, I would like to rewatch the films of 1950's and 1960's that I enjoyed in my youth. But when I try to decide which one I watch, I hesitate. I think I became too old to decide anything, worrying about the disappointments and even not enjoying as much anymore. It is strange my tastes changed and I can't enjoy the today's movie much. But anytime I saw good movies, I felt young again. That's why it is so important you enjoy things whenever you can. Movies, music, books are great entertaining values for me especially I get older.
I am going to get this book, thank you so much for your review. Your taste is immaculate ❤
I didnt really understand the story of kino…
Short story is often like that. Reader's own interpretation is more important, I guess.
This video is very calming the light and bird sounds i wish for more people to see it😄
Love your videos ^^
Great video! I love looking at your garden. 👍🏾 One day, I'll have a garden of my own to cultivate.
Vegetable gardens all depend on weather, pests and people tending for them. I would like to try synecological gardening, but that would be disaster.
Great film.
You figured out how to record, edit and upload CZcams videos so in a way, you are already a DIY person. Anyway, the light is very nice in this video. I remember you were looking for a place to go hiking, is that a good place?
Thanks always. Yes, this became my favorite neighborhood vacant area to walk and shoot videos due to the nature where nobody visits. I almost gave up to look for the established trails here. Only place I can go is the lots like this where people left underdeveloped for sometime. There are plenty of them here.
the bok choy looks great <3
Beautiful garden!
My favorite of her songs is 'comment te dire adieu.' And 'Mon Amie la Rose.' Many of her songs are very melancholic, nostalgic, and romantic. One of my favorite singers.
Thank you for sharing. I love 'comment te dire adieu' which I missed when I was still in Japan. I am now trying to find her best song albums that include her later hits. Since I have been so removed, it is a challenge. Maybe I should settle with her latest one?
@expatkaz742 her last album was Nobody Else (Personne D'Autre), which came out in 2018. I believe there may be some compilation albums of her later work as well. But I am not really familiar with her work after the 80s.
What songs of hers would you recommend?
"Tous les garcon et les filles" has been the first I knew but always stayed in my heart. It has melancholy lyrics that she devised. I understand there are many other songs that I don't know. I would like to know more recent songs that I missed.
@@expatkaz742Thank you very much for the recommendation. I'll listen to it. I appreciate your videos.

Thank you for your kind words. I, during June, frantically seeded Pumpkins, Mellons, Peas, Eggplants and other late seeding varieties just to show flea beetles that I am invincible. They germinated well and I am again very happy.
Neat
Very nice plants. It is interesting how different the light is in Colorado in comparison to Texas. It seemed brighter in Colorado. Interesting.
Nice observation! Yes, Colorado has more blue skies as well as distant views of mountains that make you feel in the wider space.
I have a huge admiration for your channel. Your videos are calming and have an interesting perspective.
For me, it is interesting that I have to change my attitude in life according to locality where the fauna are adjusting themself as well.
There are so many birds singing in the background. You are very lucky to have such a soundtrack in your life😌
Yes, they are great tailed grackles which are very loud and sometimes they chase after me when I walk under the canopy of a tree.
@@expatkaz742 You are really knowledgeable about the environment around you! Thank you for sharing the name of those birds. I read that they are so loud, some people consider them as pest. It's too bad but I can understand that. As for chasing after you, they want to protect their environment I guess. If only they understood that you also like trees and are planting more!
@@TheNetBenji Thank you for being interested. They are indeed magnificent birds, indigenous to this area. They have very handsome face with golden eyes. They are bold but I would never consider as pests. Other occasional visitors are Blue Jay and Kingbird. My bird watching hobby is coming back.
All your plants look like they like your soil and your care :) Please, show us your progress
Also flea beetles love the broccoli leaves. I think that's life for any creatures on earth. I am trying to find a way to diverse the plant species to invite beneficial insects as well. Yes, gardening is like a life which is tough and joyful.
Thats amazing!!!!!!!!!!
im glad im not the only one who found this film underwhelming. i enjoyed hearing your perspective
I am wondering what Hamaguchi has been up to since "drive ...".
@@expatkaz742 as i take it he did direct a new film, "evil does not exist" though i havent seen either of them yet.
@@jitterjay27Thank you for this info. I watched his interview at Lincoln center and also watched Mark Kermode's review of this new film. It sounded very atmospheric and beautiful. Hamaguchi's idea seems to be very interesting as well. I can hardly wait to see it.
I love your plant videos. They're very informative and nice to listen to.
Thank you always. I am carried away.
I would not expect to see such beautiful trees in Texas . But there they are!
Thank you for singing this today: I loved them, too.... God Bless You, Sir. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
It's great to see that you are excited about your new environment. What established your interest in gardening? Is it also something that dates back to your upbringing in Japan?
Yes, when I was a kid, my sisters were planting flowers. I learned how easily and cheaply I can do that. Japanese have certain kinds of tastes like cherry blossoms and maples. I get most comforts in those. Then, I became very interested in beautiful English gardens and creating it myself. But, come to think of it, it all came to my liking of certain kinds of perennials that come back year after year without much care. Thank you. Let's do gardening.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful history.
You are extremely safe walking there. Even at night. All those homes have guns. Military grade guns in many cases. In general, the wider the streets, the nicer the neighborhood. These Americans don't walk if not necessary. Sadly, they would drive a car to the kitchen if they could get it inside.
Yes, I really feel this is Texas, America. Also the weather is wild. People look all like cowboys but really nice when I talk to.
Seems like a very calm and nice place!
Wow, so cool, I hope you have a great time on this new journey of your life. 🎉 I'll be looking forward for more amazing videos from you.😊👍🏾 If you don't mind, could you explain why you moved instead of staying in Colorado.
I already hinted with my last Colorado videos that there were economical reasons. Living costs were reasons more than anything else. I would not move from Colorado if I were blessed with some fortunes. I loved the outdoor lives in Colorado so much. Secondly, I felt I should move to some warmer places due to stresses I was having in the winter of Colorado. I understood why senior people move to the warmer places like Florida or Arizona. Lastly but not the least, I felt some changes in my life will bring the excitements in life. I needed some spices in my later years when I get less active. Thank you for asking always.
So many birds singing for spring time, it's nice.
Thank you. Yes it is warmer here therefore more wildlives, I hope.
Wow Texas looks amazing
Wow, I conveyed my excitements.

Son, start with Newton. Then go to Quantum.
Wow! We discovered the film about the same time! I just saw it for the first time last week, and I totally agree! Now I'm trying to find out more about the director Agnes Varda.
Yes, the beauty of this film is speaking to us today. I think the new wave director tried so much to express her art and feelings at that time and succeeded. I want to see her other films as well.
I loved it too!
Very good video. Dementia is very scary because what is a man without his memories, if we forget everything including who we are could even be concerned humans, These are questions that cross my mind from time to time. What I try to do is get enough sleep, exercise, read, and play memory games like sudoku to promote brain health.
I try to do this when I get things into my life. If it's a book, can I get it from the library? Am I going to reread it? How many times? Etc. With clothes the same, am I going to wear it a lot?
I have heart problems so since I started to feel worse, I got rid of many things and now I have only basics + some few extra objects, very small, I can always take with me. I can pack my personal stuff in one suitcase...large one for now :)
I read the book from the library. Then, I liked it so much that I had to buy a new copy for myself in later years. The movie is the same. The movie I really enjoyed is the one I have to get it in DVD form after having watched it. I think the nature of this guaranteed future happiness is so strong that just buying the copy made me happy.
It's a really good film thank you for the video
I agree with you concerning Haruki Murakami. I really like how he gets into the heads of his characters, such as when the protagonist Toru in the "Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" goes down into a well in order to think and the soldier in Manchuria is thrown into a well. I also like some of the other introverted protagonists of his short stories, such as Ozawa in the story "The Silence" (Chinmoku). But I also agree with you that the explicit sexual scenes in his writing harm the experience of reading his novels, which is why I found it hard to read "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" and I haven't finished the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. In my opinion, these scenes are distasteful and unnecessary. I liked his book "Novelist as a Vocation". Reading that book made me wish that I had become a writer instead of an engineer...
You sounded exactly like me. I am a latecomer as a book lover. It was an eye opening experience when I found the joy of reading at the age of 60. I felt I was a teenager again at that age. God Bless Literature!
Have a great day 💚
