  • "The Sound Of The Mountain" by Kawabata is quiet and ultimately life affirming masterpiece. I hesitated in the beginning due to the depictions of bad Japanese culture of male dominance. But ultimately it is triumphant life affirming story of an older man who faces many tumultuous life incidents of his family members. Each characters of the story are well developed, sometimes strong in a reserved and quiet way. I was skeptical in the first half but became captivated toward the ending. It is a beautiful depiction of Japanese old man who dealt with his life in his own way. The book is also entertaining quietly.
Correction Note: The film by Ozu dealt with Kamakura is not "Early Spring" but "Late Spring".
