    I just completed this procedure today. Here are some roadblocks I faced and how I got around them. If you’re having trouble removing the panels from the rear of the interior, you need a trim removal tool, there’s no good place to grip to simply pull. Carefully pry between the panel and the top of the ambient lighting assembly, start about an inch or two back from the front corner, it will take some force the first time you remove them as the clips are stiff, but they will come off. Once you get the first clip released, it’s easy to pull the rest of the way. If your windows won’t roll up after, your hardtop may not be fully locked into place. Verify that the rear module locking cylinders have been fully returned to the locked position. If you’re having trouble like I was, I climbed through my vehicles rear seat pass through so that I could close the valve on the pump, as you cannot open the trunk when the top isn’t fully locked. I punched the door to get it open and ripped the ski bag out :) Once the valve was closed, I pulled up on the button and it was able to complete the locking of the top. If you have the ski bag pass through, you’ll find that you cannot easily remove the panel behind the rear seats to access the CTM. Simply remove what you can, including the passenger side luggage hook, and you can bend the panel back enough to easily access the CTM and the leads needed to operate the electronic roof locks. Lifting the top sounds daunting but don’t be scared, I’m not particularly strong in any sense of the word, and I was able to do it with the help of one person. The key to this process, GO SLOW. Follow the directions in the video very carefully, pause and rewind when you must. If you take your time, you’ll be sure to have success.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics Před 23 hodinami

      Thanks for sharing, you have some good tips there! Getting the rear locking cylinders to fully lock is the most challenging task and I assure everyone it can be done! Your approach of closing the valve on the pump and using the pump is very good. Alternatively, on could temporarily remove the hoses from the cylinders and the manual locking process will already be a lot easier. Typically, removing one single hose would make a huge difference (don't forget to re-install it later).

    This video was an absolutely invaluable resource to me today. A few days ago, I had a hall sensor fail on my top while it was fully retracted. The rear module would open no more than 12” before a “roof movement impaired” message flashed on idrive, and the operation would stop. The trunk was empty, and an error code for one of the hall sensors appeared when scanning. My top was stuck down for 3 days, which wasn’t too big of a deal as it’s summer in California, so it kept it covered with a blanket. My local BMW dealership, a very large location with a newly built state of the art service center, said they couldn’t help me! Claimed they didn’t offer service on these tops. With the help of this video, I was able to successfully close and lock my top into place. To all who made this video possible, I express my sincerest gratitude.

      Thanks for sharing and thanks for your kind words, this kind of situation is exactly why we made the video. • @scorebooknavigator8789

    The soft top on my 1997 SL500 is working fine now, thanks to this very effective video on how to replace a leaking front lock cylinder. It would have been a disaster to attempt the replacement without this video. I have one suggestion concerning the use of vice grips to remove the cylinder from the lock. I saw the recommendation to use a 7mm wrench. I obtained a 7 mm and observed that it fit nicely on the replacement cylinder, but not the old cylinder on the lock. The problem was that the jaw of the 7mm was wider than the distance between the shoulder on the cylinder and the lock. I could not find a tool narrow enough to engage the cylinder and resorted to the vice grips. I suggest that you design a tool to engage the narrow space between the cylinder shoulder and the lock and include it with the replacement cylinder. This might save some excessive damage due to guys resorting to vise grips.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics Před 20 dny

      Well, "easy to replace" is relative. I haven't searched yet, but there surely are micro switches that are roughly the same size with somewhat similar levers on them. The idea is to find a micro switch that has a longer lever on it, bend that lever to roughly match the one in the XLR switch assembly, and fasten the replacement switch into the plastic holder (most likely using epoxy). I would first look in the Omron catalog. The part number for the GM switch assembly is 19120639.

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics Před 26 dny

      The cause is one of the front locks giving the signal that it is unlocked, even though it is closed. The front locks develop a little play with time and the steel lever that pushes on the micro switch needs a tiny adjustment. We are talking less than a millimeter. Here is the in-depth description: czcams.com/video/tu16hvKg-a4/video.html Maybe you installed the rear locks a little lower than they used to be and that created more tension on the canvas, which in turn pulled up harder on the front locks. In either case, you want to find out which one of the front locks is giving the erroneous signal and bend the lever on that lock's micro switch up between 0.5 mm and 1 mm. A little is s lot - take before and after pics so that you can reverse any over-adjustments. To find out which one needs adjustment, put the soft top tool in the lock and turn as if to close it some more. If this makes the red light go out, then you found the culprit.

    I have E350, tried to pull release knobs out to turn but they wont come out. What am I doing wrong? Thx Also, if my roof will go down but not go up, what is the problem? Thx

      The release knobs on the bottom can be pretty tight when the weather stripping on the cover is tight. Have one person push on the rear corner of the cover while you try to pull the knob.

      @@TopHydraulics in my case, my top is down and will not go back up so the entire roof roof is still stowed away with the cover over it, so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to push down on

      @@rogerford5589 The knobs can be hard to pull if the storage cover is pulling up on the cylinders. That's why I'm recommending that someone else lean their body weight on the rear corner of the cover above the cylinder that you are trying to pull the knob on.

    Thanks for such a great instructional video, i've attempted this on my car which has roof stuck in trunk/boot and trunk doesnt move at all during roof activation. Unfortunately i cant get the pistons to move, one moves about a cm but retracts but the other (right) is rock solid so im assuming it is a mechanical jam on the locking mechanism. Is there any way of accessing this with the roof down? You can hear it engaging an actuator but then stops.

    Hello and thenk you for all the excellent info! Just one question, after i changed the oil and freed the solenoids to empty the oil from hydravlics as well, i can't prime the pump. There is air in the system and the roof is not working. Do you have any recomendation about how to fully prime the pump?

    • @TopHydraulics
      @TopHydraulics Před měsícem

      Thanks for asking, the pump is self priming as long as there is enough fluid in it.

      @@TopHydraulics Thanks for the answer. That's odd because before i ejected the solenoids to extract all of the old oil, roof worked perfectly. After the "full flush" i added oil just at the "top" mark but now the boot opens slowly and the roof never retracts. i even tried opening and closing manually the roof with the air vlve open in case there was air trapped in but nothing changed. I don't know what else to do.
