Thanks for this, and thanks for the rebuild. Getting ready to install. BMW dealer said they couldn't even get a new one for months. I've been waiting for a month and a half already, but just got the rebuild back from you.
Love all your videos. The Cadillac XLR series really helped me out a lot when I had to repair my friends XLR. I really like the details in your videos. I just bought my wife a 2004 VW Convertable Beetle. If you take suggestions, it would be awesome if you could do a series on the 1998-2010 Beetle.
I have an error. My error is a68d roof shell 2 closed. Would you bypass it? Or would you do an emergency open procedure to get to the sensor to replace it? Can you can a video for an e89 convertable as there are no videos around??
Thanks for asking, I would suggest opening the top and replacing the sensor. Unfortunatley, we won't have time to make in-depth E89 videos for quite a while.
Thanks for asking. Is your top currently not working because you have a leak, or because there is a problem with one of the sensors or because the pump is bad? Manual opening of the top is pretty involved and we would not recommend it just for an occasional drive with your top down, but rather only to get access at failed components. We intend to publish a video on manual top operation in a few months.
@@TopHydraulics Thank you for the prompt reply! I collected my car from the dealership today. The issue was due to water leakage. I got the leakage issue fixed from the dealership. Right now, the truck opens up, the rear shell comes above the front shell and that's where the roof operation stops. The guy pointed towards the solenoid (if I heard it correctly from your video) and told me the issue could be due to the temperature sensor here. The dealership could not make this fix as they only offer complete replacement of the hydraulic unit. Is this also called ambient temperature sensor? Do you know what this sensor is exactly called or the serial number? I see many different kinds of temperature sensors on the internet. After watching your video, I feel confident about replacing the unit. Is replacing the temperature sensor also an easy DIY?
@@anujgrover2458 The dealership has the tools to determine whether the fault lies in the pump or not, so let's assume that the pump is problem. The temperature sensor is inside the pump and DIY temperature sensor replacement would be a long shot. Also, the sensor may have indicated a high temperature simply because the pump was working too hard, in which case replacing the sensor will have no effect. I would suggest that you send us your pump for rebuild, which will take care of any issues with the pump: www.tophydraulics.com/bmw-z4-e89-2009-2016/704-2537-bmw-z4-e89-2009-2016-hydro-unit.html#/30-core_exchange-send_your_parts_to_top_hydraulics_first

Hi. I have no codes or errors. The windows just go down and nothing happens to the roof. I replaced the salmon relay but no improvement. Does that automatically mean my pump is dead? Is there a way to check it before sending for rebuild?
@@TopHydraulics I did check but it looks brand new in there. Willing to take it out tho but hopefully there was a way to test it. Hard to diagnose when there is no codes or errors. Just no movement after the windows roll down.
Thanks for asking. This is a pretty simple, straightforward DIY job. The system is self bleeding as long as there is enough fluid in the pump. It is "plug and play" if you get your pump from Top Hydraulics, as the pump is already filled with fluid. You want to be alert and ready to stop the top operation the first time you use the replaced pump, just in case you accidentally swapped some hoses or electrical connections.
Thanks for asking. The pumps for an E89 Z4 convertible and for an E93 335i convertible are different, but the process of replacing the pump is largely the same. It's plug and play. We are planning on adding a video on E93 pump replacement later this year.
My top closes as expected but does not open well. It has a jerky motion and sounds like the motor is surging. Can you tell me if this is how this failure presents itself?
Thanks for asking. Yes, one of the symptoms of a failing pump can be jerky top motion, caused by valve failure. Make sure the fluid level in the pump is between min and max, as a low fluid level could cause similar symptoms.
@@hiltondc3 When I looked at the hydro-motor it was sitting in water. I removed the water and unplugged the power to the motor and removed the two bolts holding the motors stator on. They are magnetic so it'll pull out a little harder then expected. I dried both the stator and the rotor and re-assembled it. It's been working fine since.
@@samfaid230 Are you referring to a sensor in the trunk area or one up in the roof panel? The headliner in the roof panel can be removed by pulling it down.
@@samfaid230 It was a little premature on my end to talk about the headliner, because the sensor you are taking about is in the pillar while the top is raised, which means you actually have to open the top to get at it. If you could trace the wires for the sensor and fake the signal from the sensor by splicing n the new sensor in the trunk as a temporary measure, then you should be able to open the top with the pump. Is your bad sensor the "roof panel closed" micro switch or is it the "roof panel packed" Hall sensor?
