Thorn in my side every time I run a Star Trek RPG: sensors and transporters. Basically "I win" spells. There are lots of ways of dealing with them, but I've found social contract the most effective.

In my campaign, reviving the dead can only be done by divine intervention, which requires the material component of the heart from a freshly slain god. This puts the component in a position where is is difficult for the players to access but also for powerful npcs to access in the setting, but possible for both.

About the resurrection problem, most games have enough limitations for the points you brought up to be a problem. Taking D&D for the following examples. Mechanically, if the killer takes the king's head, then the only spells that can bring him back are either Reincarnate or some really high level ressurrection spells, and those might just not be avaliable because they're just that hard to come by., The soul also has to be willing AND ABLE, so if the soul has been trapped by a spell or taken by a god or a fiend that doesn't want to let it go, the king is not comming back regardless of what spells you use. Lastly, I'm pretty sure people killed by Hellfire Weapons can't be brought back since they're technically alive as a Lemure, so maybe use one of those

If the world of dnd is the problem, there are other games. Good ones! I started on fatecore because dnd was too much math and too constricting for me. Years later, i run dnd lite with fatepoints, and rolls for things outside the normal scope. Works for me and my group. Revivify is rare. True rezz just isn't a thing. There's maybe like 2 wizards that could do it, and they won't help you. Wish as a spell was killed by the god wars. Players could read about that in a book, but there's no need. My overarching theme is "Magic come at a cost", so they know there'll be consequences to their actions. But they're in the Feywild rn where magic is loose, so they're having a blast.

I agree with everything you said. I’ve seen resurrection and wish spells ruin good campaigns. When I started my 1st campaign I told my players that resurrection existed but “what comes back isn’t what was there before and they could play it but I would ultimately control its actions”! That was all well and good until they got to higher levels and the whining and complaining began! 😣 the campaign didn’t last long after that!

  • @LaPrincesseLointaine

I don't see any problem with rerolling stuff o.O How it even affects scenario if you as dm allowed the roll in the first place? In case you just reroll it, you can still get the same result anyway. If your purpose was the one predefined outcome, why do you even allow the roll to happen? I'm sorry, but that's literally a bad dm decision then. Other points I mostly agree, but to be honest, the way you're spelling it applies to a whole lot of stuff in the end, not just a couple of spells and mechanics. If anything unusual exists in the world, it's obligatory to think how it affects the world, to the point you could've just name the video "I hate fantasy".

For me, it's the lie detector spells and lie detector abilities that bug me most. May as well just say NPCs can never lie at that point.

  • @llywyllngryffyn8053

Almost every spell can 'break' the game in one or more ways. Let's say you have a spell that Transmute's Liquid, e.g. it can turn water into wine, oil, honey, etc. Perhaps you want to lure your players into an adventure with the promises of earning enough coin to finally buy decent equipment from the greedy and overpriced traders in the big city... wait, your mage starts conjuring tuns of honey from river water and selling it to the bakers and Mead makers of the city.. (if not making mead himself) and suddenly the party has all of the money they ned to live comfortably for their foreseeable future. All spells can have consequences added and in a game where you want to keep magic from getting out of hand, you have to introduce them. In the original AD&D game, your character's CON score was the maximum number of times that they could be resurrected. That may not seem like much, but if the King only has a 10 CON then he has only 10 times where the Magic platinum cup can bring h9im back from the brink. Another way that such magic has consequences is the Aging effect. The guy being brought back returned at the age he was when he died, but the caster lost five years of his life. (or 5% for Long lived races) Another idea for what to do to make death mean something is death Quirks. Every time you die and come back, you bring a little bit of the afterlife back with you. Think of it like the corruption scars from Ravenloft or the Twilight Scars of Ars Magica. Ther is some permanent thing that has changed about you. They might be good or bad, depending on the person. If they come back from the lower planes, perhaps living plants die in their presence. Maybe milk sours in the presence. Maybe their aura attracts beetles. Maybe food rots faster around them. If they were a holy person, maybe the effect would be a good thing, except that it could give them away if they were trying to be inconspicuous. The emperor is never inconspicuous, but if he has a halo of light around his head, it might make him even easier for enemies to spot on the battlefield. Insead of a 'scar' it could be a kind of 'companion'. Maybe an imp hangs around him, taunting him about what the dark lord is going to de when he gets back to hell. Maybe a friendly wisp tries to protect the one who was resurrected by zapping anyone with a dark aura who comes near. That could make diplomacy between two rival empires difficult if the little blue cloud that follows the emperor around keeps zapping the imperial Ambassador...

Your “soul for a soul” solution would create an interesting scenario for kingdoms to fold religion into governance entirely and create “god-kings / queens” who require continued sacrifices so they may continue there work on the mortal plane. Usurpers would be at a disadvantage in such a world without significant sycophants behind them.

You got to love how everything is looking pretty good, and then the dice fall wrong and there is a good chance they will all die again. I wonder if they can just surrender and say, "kill us in 2 days, it's fine." Early on I was even thinking the should just sit down on the shale and wait it out, seems a lot safer.

I added the first level spell eavesdrop. Magical communications are never secure. Resurrection requires the willing sacrifice of a non-suicidal person. Teleportation are reduced to line of sight, magical gates and teleportation circles require a human sacrifice to open.

I had a player ask me recently if he could take the Silvery Barbs spell with the magic initiate feat. I said: "Sure you can. But Silvery Barbs is like a war crime. If you take it, I'll start giving it to my caster enemies." He quickly backtracked. Similar thing happened when I had a druid player ask if he could Jerrymander his wall of fire spell. When they fought a dracolitch who Jerrymandered the wall of fire, the whole table started to panic.
