When you spoke about backdoor idea to the castle but to "alter it" my brain immediatelly imagined situation about some crack in a wall - something that you can squeeze though and it is covered by a training dummy. a hidden Squeeze-out exit for guards so noone see them leaving their post duty. Not to mention such Way would also fix some quite common problem of "stealth sections" as it could be just some part of corridor that is not much occupied by people, so noone see the guards when they sneak out for a smoke, and so Party should be able to sneak in that way without Any stealth checks - if they choose to go sneaky way, then It's time to watch them planning after entering castle that way; but If they don't wanna go sneaky they still have some advantage for getting inside Unnoticed.

The biggest clue is when the roleplay is just roll-play.
I am bad for this. When it is just constant rolling? I stop the character. I attack. I check for traps. I go to next room.
Players not interacting is a big thing. Especially in combat. Nobody likes a bullet sponge.

This. My biggest pet peeve as a player is being 'ignored'. If I'm not affecting the GMs posts it feels like I'm not even there and it's the WORST.

Spot on with highlighting players as a GM's greatest asset! Listening to their feedback, both direct and indirect, is key to understanding the game's flow. Beyond just picking up on cues for adjustments, we can also use players' ideas, fears, and hopes to enrich the game. By weaving their characters' backstories, ambitions, and even offhand comments into the narrative, we make the adventure more personal and engaging. It turns the game into a collaborative storytelling experience, where players feel deeply connected and invested. Thanks for the reminder to always keep an ear to the ground and co-create with our players!

Greatly appreciate these videos that shine a light on the simple things we can do as game masters to make the game more fun.
Side note, my favorite example of this was running Lost Mine of Phandelver for a group of friends. The knight they rescued, who had been to Phandalin before and was a 'too old for this shite' kind of guy, was talking with the party as the innkeeper's wife brought them all ale and food. On a whim, I mentioned that the knight smiled for the first time since they'd met him.
One of my players immediately seized on it and said, "Ohhhh, Sildar's got a thing for Toblen's wife." And I said to myself, "Well, he does now."

When my players where exploring an island with dragonborn tribes scattered all over; they decided to grab a tribute to bring before the closest tribe. One of the players suggested local fruits, and another made a joke about Edible Arrangements. but they mispronounced it as "Edible Engagements". I knew the little party that tribe was having now had to be a local engagement festival for all the eligible partners in the tribe. So when our Barbarian strolled in with a heaping platter of fruit as dowry, they all assumed he was offering to marry one of the dragonborn! most fun little sidequest i gave them yet!

My favorite thing to do as a GM is listen to all the crazy theories my Players come up with.
The craziest ones tend to crop up from what was originally the most straightforward situations.

When they say, "You know what would really be f*cked up is if..." or "Wouldn't it be funny if..." are good queues to add something in response to them. Maybe not as "effed up" or slapstick funny as they described, but a nod to it. It's especially good when you can make that happen with enough of a delay that they might not even remember having said something.

About alternate castle access: If I recall my history correctly, Chateau Gilliard fell when a couple of bored men-at-arms climbed up the wall through a garderobe (a toilet hung over the wall). One imagines that the effort what a bit unsanitary, but it worked.

I will say that "it can't get any worse" can also be a hint to slam on the brakes... depending on how it is said. If your player is exasperated, frustrated, etc, you need to let up. I have watched GMs ramp it up, as Guy suggested, and the player did not care their character was about to die. They had lost interest because of how lopsided things had gotten, they expected to die, so when it got worse, they didn't care.
Learn your players, listen to them. Listen, don't hear. There are tons of clues to how much your players are enjoying the game in how they talk, and listening is a skill everyone at the table should be honing.

I am currently dming a strahd campaign (re-writing as I go), and one of the most fun things is that my players are now paranoid that everyone around them is a vampire spy. Most characters aren't, of course...but they've given me the idea that someone COULD be. I would never have come up with that on my own!

One of my pet hates in D&D is when a DM thinks they know what you want to do then talks over me and totally screws up what I wanted to do.

The talk of not planning? I say never plan for what players will do. Plan for what is there and what is going on. Then just react accordingly. If players think of something clever? Then just go with it.

Sounds like something you'd say if the buttons were secretly mimics. Just saying.

I can't count how many times I've overheard my players conversations and added it in the game. I also let my characters write my campaigns by using their back stories.
    World's laziest DM.
