Tool-time with Devongunsmith: I finally make a dust extractor!
Using DIY tools means they sometimes need adapting to be useful for gunsmithing and similar trades.. this is a lot overdue upgrade to minimise dust from the sanding machine.
The Devongunsmith Diaries concept was conceived by me during lock down, and the premise was to be able to perform work without a fully set up gunsmiths workshop, but rather, using just the Cottage Kitchen Table, a few hand tools, some cordless tools, a table vice, and other small DIY tools.
While the channel is not specifically intended to be a how to guide, it is mainly for entertainment.
While in the UK gunsmithing must be performed by the Licenced Gun Trade, CZcams is without borders, and if the channel is useful to someone as either entertainment, or indeed helps you to decide if a repair might be possible, then I have been a help to you.

The squirt bottles.. I have a few of them.. contain small amounts of various chemicals.. The one with a red crusty hue is alkanet root in boiled linseed. With is stock finishing oil. The jar with what looks like whiskey inside is acetone which I soak gunstock in to dry out the oil etc from the stock. I obviously use the acetone which is stained by the oil and walnut, for general degreaser.

Denton & Kennel when they were in business, had a shop in Somerton, Somerset, not far from me. Nearly all their guns were made in Spain and at the cheap end of the market. Nicely done, I've just found your videos and I'm really enjoying them! I've done a bit of kitchen counter gun tinkering so I find them really interesting. I have a very similar half stock percussion fowler, but a lower grade. The lock is marked 'Gillespie'. Wolfe and Gillespie were a New York hardware wholesaler who marketed their firearms under the banner of Gillespie's Celebrated Guns. They were popular in the Southern States. These guns included ones imported from Birmingham makers, and also pistols from Deringer in Philadelphia. Mine has a similar octagon to round barrel with the wedding band at the transition, but it's not Damascus. A back action lock instead of the front action on the Hollis. The engraving is quite spare, game scenes with birds flushed out of grass. The barrel is marked "London" on top but has well struck pre 1855 Birmingham proof marks. Marketing never changes. The checkering on the stock is not deep. It seems like a good quality, functional gun built to a price. The Hollis is prettier. Anyway, after all that, I'll get to my question. Are you using a vegetable oil for lubrication? And if so what kind? I have a photo of an old Westley Richards gun care card that tells the owner to use a small amount of sweet oil to free up a sticky action. I believe sweet oil was a term used for olive oil.

A mineral oil for the interior parts, and a traditional boiled linseed oil for outer metals and wood stock but less is more! If you cost linseed oil thickly, it will create a sticky gel mess. Use very sparingly.

Brilliant video and very informative. One question, why is there no spring on the top firing pin?

The breech clearance is sufficient to not require a pin retraction spring on the upper chamber. The lower pin needs to be retracted to stop it catching the breech.
