If I had to hazard a guess about the reason for the slope in the foyer it would be one of three things: 1) the building was built on a slight hill and they followed that rather than building it with flat floors, 2) part of the building has settled over the years (but you'd likely see cracks in the walls if that were the case), or 3) they did it intentionally in the event of flooding, so the water would all run to one side of the foyer and could be swept out the door. Those moldings around the ceiling are stunning! I would put the dining area over in the other side of the room, so that it's not in the sight line from the front door when you look into the room. I love that wallpaper with the purple bird! And the tile factory was fascinating! What a fun time of renovating a place, to choose all these beautiful décor items!

The two of you should design your own wallpapers. You're surrounded by inspiration with access to the historically correct and complimentary colors throughout the house. Best of all Oliver is extrtalented, more than qualified and capable of creating master copies for the printers to digitize.
That said, I know from experience how trying it can be to work with an artist. Particularly when differences of opinion and direction take hold very early in the process. Perhaps a collaboration with an artist outside of your marriage is the safest route 😉.

What a fabulous video Camilla. With your enthusiasm and the beautiful descriptions of the tiles its a wonder the factory haven't snapped you up to be an ambassador for them.
Such beautiful designs and I'm sure you'll make the perfect choice of boarder tile. I must admit I'd like to see a lighter colour instead of the old brown damaged ones. I understand that when originally designed they looked like rugs but now it could look fully carpeted with a lighter tile... if you follow my thoughts.
I absolutely loved the vine leaf and berries boarder with the beautiful central design tiles. Such a sophisticated style.

I actually prefer the brown. It acts as a border and gets lost in the shadows so it allows the main tiles to shine. Like what would happen to a rug on a wooden floor. The pink looks nice but is highlighting the edge and so you'll lose the rug effect.

Your dining room will be sumptuous, one time. I’m currently looking for matching tiles to ones that we have in our entry area, dated from 1918. To assure the colours match, I strongly suggest to give your cement tiles a clean with a professional cement tiles cleaning liquid. The colours come through much better and you assure to colour match with a non-stained floor. 😊

Having a lighter, solid color border and an interior field that is a darker print, the border would float, visually and the darker print in the middle with sink visually. the lighter border would, if touching the wall , add hight to the wall and visually shrink the room ever so lightly . A darker border would anchor the floor . Either works fine actually . If i were to use the pink border trim . it would naturally want some of that same pink in the center of the room as an accent piece of furniture to tie it all together for the eye .. perhaps a samr pink fabric something .. like a small round table with a lovely tablecloth ... or a upholstered chair .. ( when your floors are so wild with pattern and THE focal point of a room , it dictates using pretty much solid upholstery fabrics ) or at least a vase with pink flowers like Peonies .... Whatever you choose to do , I am sure will turn out beautiful

Camilla, you might find that cleaning your hydraulic tiles could brighten the overall look of your flooring. Perhaps as with the walls, your floors have also taken on a brownish stain due to tobacco smoke. It is also possible that your floors have been give numerous coats of floor wax that has now trapped dirt and grime onto their surface and gone quite yellow. If you need to remove surface stains, soap and water will be enough. If you want a “more thorough” cleaning, you can use a steamer, as the steam will help remove the most ingrained dirt, leaving a much cleaner surface. As always, truly enjoy your episodes and the subjects covered. Best to all of you from a not so sunny California today.

Regarding the floor, have you explored what the underlayment of the tiles are ? No older home is square or level, due to settling. If it bothers you you will have to remove the tiles and level the underlayment you could then install underneath heating - it would help the health of the building. While you wait for approval from the board regarding wall paper etc. You could use painter's cloth fabric ( inexpensive) neutral in color and drape on the walls. Even pinch pleat the fabric and staple gun, then trim with a piece of lathe. Temporary - but it would be pleasant to look at rather than the paper pieces

Good morning from London Camilla & Ollie, I love the thought and research that Camilla is putting into this project but imo it's easy to slip into too many different prints and patterns. I would not put wallpaper inside the wall panels. Why not add more interest with paintings and ornaments and plants later instead of having fixed patterns (e.g. wallpaper) you cannot remove. The floor is busy enough with geometric & natural patterns, it's going to give you a headache to have such a busy room, these patterns next to each other may look OK while the room is relatively empty but by the time you've added furniture, paintings, plants, ornaments, etc. it's going to look very very busy, it would have the opposite of a relaxing effect so it depends whether you like a cluttered look or a more refined, simpler one x

  • @gnarbeljo8980
    @gnarbeljo8980 Před 3 měsíci

I think you're on the right track! Lots of interesting ideas, colors patterns. The tiles are made the exact same way as Moroccan tiles of the same type, and I believe the whole technique originates from there, like you can see in the more Morish styles. I know tiles can be very expensive if you're considering schemes for several different rooms, so in any space where you go for more geomentric styles, you may want to look at those too, for other options at a better price point. In fact, large arched mirrors, and other decor that would tie in well are also a Moroccan specialty. And it's a marvelous place to source many different things for interiors and exteriors, they make gorgeous mosaic designs on table tops, counters, and fountains all set in a concrete base, lots of iron scroll work, marvelous bespoke habd sewn matresses and cushions in fine woven fabrics, mirrors and hammered brass architectural and decorative elements andso much more. If you chose wizely you can buy alot of lovely things there and ship it, things that would simply be too expensive to make in Europe, without going full on Moroccan style. It's also a most marvelous place to visit for a holiday / sourcing trip and the boat over from spain isn't expensive.
If you're looking at buying rugs, and bedspreads, handwoven cushions in these lively pastels, they have beautiful options, that are both haute in interiors and very artful up close, tactile, thanks to the traditional hand made methods used for generations.
I think a trip at some point would be both inspiring and prove very fruitful without breaking the bank. 😉 I like the ivy trail too, especially with those spectacular art nouveau fronds they framed, those were gorgeous!
Real plants can be a bit tricky in a room without alot of natural light though. Lage plants are expensive so I'd start with only one and see if it works. I immediately thought of Medinilla magnifica, (the showy medinilla or rose grape) which is spectacular planted in footed urns an displayed on high side boards or pedistals, check them out, perfect pink and greens, and would work anywhere! Get a really big one or plant them together for great effect! Of the English companies, I prefer Little Green to it's conpetitors, but regardless of the ingredient list (which is important!) it's still acrylate paint. Very curated colors and without toxic additives, but acrylate, meaning high end regular water soluble plastic wall paints.
Not oil based (for old panelling the oils are what condition and restore the wood, prevent from cracking etc) and none ofbthem an actual emulsion which per definition is an oil based paint that's been made water soluble by way of an emulsifier (often a natural protein, or resinous soap)
It's just good to be aware. No matter what the English do when restoring historic property, its not conservation grade paints, but entirely modern ones. And you do still have to leave any paint residue with the recycling center in Scandinavia where rules are strict about acrylic and latex paints (I dont thing they care in southern Europe about this). Anyway l, if they offer to sponsor you, then it's free paint and paper and a different story.
If you have to pay for it yourselves, it's definately worth mentioning, as the price reflects the branding more than denotes unique ingredients.
Also, on walls and ceilings with nicotine staining, you're still going to need a really awfuk sealant layer first, (not fun to work with and I'd definately have professionals do that layer for you and go away for 48 hours!). If you simply prime it, in time the nicotine staining will bleed through your fabulous paint! I can assure you, that's a huge waste of money and hard work. So you need to talk to your local paint manufacturers about this, bc LG don't make those treatments and they arent paints you want to hang around whilst wet or curing.
I'm looking forward to seeing your choices come together and taking shape!
Such a marvekoys house to work with, and live in!
I do hope you've had some rain? I've heard the most awful news about the drought in Catalonia..
    Take care! 💖

Thank you for such a thoughtful response. And for sharing all your knowledge of Morocco. It is now high on our list of places to visit. 🙂
We are not being sponsored by Little Greene, I just showed their paints as they are a company I have used in the past and really like but we receive no financial benefit from showing their products.
It has been very dry over here. Thank you for asking. The fountain in the square is temporarily switched off to save water. 💖

The room is going to be gorgeous! But wouldn’t you want a wallpaper that is mire art nouveau to match the rest of the mansion?

I think the floor needs a deep clean before you make a colour choice. LOVE the wallpaper!

Yes, i think it's important to keep to the style of the house, but its also yours and so i say go for it! Make your matk; busy concept and yet it suits the house.❤ Ahahahaha I LOVE the dragon tile which goes with your staircase newel! Pst... keep in mind thectiles for the kitchen are stain resistant and washable 😉 I've seen the carpet effect in tiles; fun yet you do want the contrast to make the "carpet" effect to stand out.

I like the pale pink tile border and I much prefer the 1st wallpaper sample. The 2nd was too purple.

I love the Gaudi tiles! If I couldn’t afford them I’d have artist Ollie design the tiles!

Floor is domed because the walls have sunk a little, pushing the sides of the room down (happened in my garage, which is only single storey, so the middle is bulging upwards) or it was a laundry and the water is meant to collect pool around the edges and drain out? But so long as a wall is not bulging outwards it should all be OK for another lifetime or two. =)

The chapel restorers at La Lande could probably help you with how to clean the blue floor tiles without damaging them. They are doing a very careful job and know lots of techniques.

Thank you, although they may not be the same type of tiles, so may need a different type of cleaning. We would need to check this first.

Just a suggestion that you use Little Greene Distemper? The plaster will be lime which explains why the subsequent paint has peeled. LG Distemper is amazing and will look great. Also a suggestion that you avoid cementitious materials completely; which are damaging to buildings of this age? Thanks for the vlog, as always, a joy.

Again and again, this house/palais/mansion is a miracle. Wonderful wallpaper. The cats will love the birds. 🙃 Border tiles: I personally would prefer the dark terra cotta. It seems perfect to the old tiles and let them look fresh again. A dark border as a frame, like the original, without being brown. I adore the old tiles, they have patina. The pink border could make looking the old tiles shabby and might be too delicate to be kept clean. ❣

The pink tile and first wallpaper sample.really.work well together. The second sample paper is good but just doesn't pop like the first.
