Enjoyed another episode of 'Gareth's guilty pleasures' - these tins have always been a rock-solid store cupboard regular in my house - they last forever and get the job done in an emergency pie situation. I'll be interested to see whether the steak & kidney is any better with the new/old recipe. Also Gareth, you ought to patent the "Fray Bentos Foldover" technique - it's the future of rapid pie delivery!😆

"Our recipe has not been up to scratch lately", meaning "we tried using poor quality meat and less of it and you found us out.

You are the first person I have ever met who loves Fray Bentos and it’s soggy pastry! Love love love them! Especially the steak and kidney ones…. Omg …. Delicious!

no way would i pay £3,25 for a fray bentos pie !! And I love them . Too much money for what you get , buy a tin of stewed steak and some ready made puff pastry , Spot on . Keep making these videos Gareth. Great job !!!

Soggy pastry is the best ,I always keep those bits to myself when making a steak pie

Very well made comparison. It's refreshing to see two versions side by side. Fray Bentos are quite a frustrating product for me because I really do like them, but they have huge, wasted potential. If they just added a bit more in them, even just 10% more meat... That'd make a huge difference in how often I'd buy these!

I grew up with original Fry Bentos pies. 40yrs later, still enjoying them.

My Uncle lived off these he had terminal cancer God love him, he was always helping everyone else in his village! Every time I visited him he would send me back with a goodie box and always sent me on my way with a couple of Fray Bentos pies. I love soggy pastry and tomato sauce. Chefs develop the worst eating habits. We used to stack up all the leftover pizzas 🍕 and put it in the fridge. (Usually five or six) then we would cut slices off and eat it with salad cream on it! 😂😂😂

I haven't eaten these pies since I was a child in the 1970s, but the bit of soggy pastry was always my favourite bit. My mum's homemade pies were such a disappointment because they didn't have the soggy bit 😂

The soggy pastry is fully cooked. It will just never get crispy with all the steam coming out of the mince! I love these. Reasonably healthy and low fat for a pie and with a nice pile of mash and some veg, they do the trick! I'm a soggy pastry fan. Yummy!

I was in Morrisons today and these were priced up at £3.25. Considering there is no meat in them anymore and they are more a gravy pie I thought this was a shocking price. Edit - just got to the end of the video and saw you say the exact same thing.

I haven't had one of these in years but I agree with you, the soggy pastry is the best bit

I live in Australia now but I still love them , especially the mix of the soggy bottom yet crunchy top pastry. They cost about $9 here but still buy them

Believe it or not Gary. My mom used to do the steak and kidney version of these when I was a kid back in the seventies. One did for four of us !! and they were packed full of meat

My dad loved those pies, part of the joy of them is the soggy pastry!!

I buy my pies from a deli in my local market. They are lovely and always full to the brim with filling. Their steak and kidney pie is unbeatable.

I have found that the OXO good grips can opener to be excellent, it has no problem opening pie tins from fray bentos or princes foods. Asda has fray bentos pies for £2 atm as an FYI but looks set to rise as tesco just jacked the price to £3. To be honest we just make our own pies with Jus-Rol frozen puff pastry which is cheaper than the asda own label by £1 a kilo. For filling the asda just essental canned minced beef and onion has 28% beef with extra onions, asda essental canned new potato's, frozen peas and/or frozen mixed veg for a cheat filling make a larger, cheaper better pie. As a FYI 18% of 425g is 76.5g for the beef and 21,25g for the onion, as the old tins state pastry was 27% for a total of 50% the rest is water and flavourings. JUST ESSENTIALS frozen Beef Mince with Onion has 70% beef and 76.5g costs 34.7p. Thanks for the video we'll keep reusing the old fray bentos tins from when they where 99p a pie.

Cheers, Gareth ..... My Tin opener is garbage, so the last one I had I had to use a Hammer and Screwdriver to get the Bugger open. Took me about an Hour in the end. Love a Fray Bentos from time to time and they always hit the Spot ! Great review as always, Cheers ! 😉👏👏
