When I was a kid (way back) the fray bentos meat pies were lovely - big chunks of meat that melted in your mouth, recently bought one for my husband, meat all small and mostly gravy, not as good as it was, and the tin is smaller than it used to be-the pastry still seems good, but then pasty is cheap, its the fillings in my opinion that have gone down hill.
Sounds like a case of Shrinkflation. Giving you less and charging the same. I remember eating them when I was a child in the 50s and 60s. Steak and Kidney was the one I liked. Nothing stays the same.
I had one yesterday , I’ve trashed 3 tin openers lately 😡 and I’m finding they are not puffing up that well ? I pre heat the oven , and cook as long as it says ? Gareth’s looks much better than mine 😂
Recently bought pies from the local market from between 1 pound and 1.50 and they are around the same kind of size and filled (properly filled) with actual meat. When I look at these I just think they are taking the **ss
The meat melted when you put it in your mouth? Yuck, sounds more like jelly. I've eaten a few of these recently and fortunately, the meat is better as it doesn't melt in the mouth.
The thing is that Bentos have to make the curry mild as not everyone loves a hot ruby. It's up to the individual to add spices if a hotter sauce is required.
It’s a shame they don’t just do a tin of the pastry that we can put on our own filling. I always love the Fray Bentos pastry but the fillings can be proper dodgy.
It's hard to find a "robust" can opener, I've broken so many over the past year or so. My Mum had a bog standard opener in the 60's, it was still working when we cleared the house when she passed away 2 years ago.
The best part of a Fray Bentos pie has always been the pastry. The filling is secondary. I, like yourself especially like the slimey bit under the crust. I totally agree that as the years have gone on the fillings have diminished. No longer would i use this product as a meal for a family but just as a snack after a skin full of Asda pilsner 👍👍👍
Both myself and my hubby were brought up on fray bentos pies we love the mush pastry to. The flavour is bloody great and that crisp top yummy. Steak or chicken . We also loved vesta beef risotto or chow mein lol pure junk but never did us any harm.
I have one of those can openers. It was in the kitchen drawer when I moved into the flat about 12 years ago. I haven’t used it yet because I have a different one. If I ever buy a Fray Bentos pie I will use it.
I've never known a tinned food product recommend brands of robust tin openers before! Not gonna lie, that pastry looked pretty damn good. I agree re Asda, they have some fab deals on home stuff at the moment. 👌
I remember my mum did some nights in Australia had Fray Bentos pies and i agree with you Bald foodie guy that the fray Bentos pies had alots of meats also our first dog in Austrlalia love it as well we need to write to them to put more meat back into those pies not less
I’ve just had a steak & gravy one, the first one I’ve had in years! Getting the lid off was a nightmare for me and it wasn’t that tasty. I did eat it out of the can, lol. I don’t fancy that curry one, deffo, but they can sit in your cupboard for a couple of years which is good 😊
The outside pastry looked crisp and appetising - but I could not have put the pastry that was touching the filling in my mouth. It looed soggy, slimy and raw. The Scottish manufacturer Baxters bought Fray Bentos from Princes Foods in 2011. It started in the late 1800's and is named after a port in Uruguay where Fray Bentos products were originally processed and packaged until the 1960's.
Thanks Jeanette yes I know what you mean about the soggy pastry. I actually love that lol. It's always been like since I remember. That one was not a good one. They are not like they were when I was a kid. Lovely comment toy left me thank you, all the best, Gareth 😘👍👍
I love these Fray Bentos pies, always have. Just wish they were still £1.50 - they are now £3.00 at my Asda. The All Day Breakfast one is really nice - it didn't sound very nice , but the beans mixed with pastry. Yum!
You just made the hubby's day Gareth! Your only s year older than us so we were both brought up on them too! They seemed bigger in the 80's or is it just me? They do a veg balti one as well. Have you got a po box so we can send you some stuff to try?

"Dodgy", in our experience, is an understatement.

Yeah, pastry is great in these pies - all of them, but filling (which is the important bit) always lets them down. Good review.
