  • Today we will look at Hobo Phoenix and why he's such a controversial character. Then I'll give my own personal opinion on the character.
The video itself was unscripted but I did make edits because by the time, I got to work on this video, I fixed the audio issue.

Personally, I think the biggest reason Phoenix developed his Poker Face would be Trucy. She was already going through so much suffering when he adopted her that he didn't want to burden her with his problems. That's probably also why most of hobo Phoenix' sprites show him with a smirk of some kind: He learned to keep smiling, no matter what.

Speaking of characters that get accused of character assassination:
Ema, not only failing her tests to become a scientific investigator, which was largely her one big life goal, but having such an inspirational person like Phoenix - who also saved her sister - fall from grace, would undeniably make you a fairly cynical human being (similarly to how Phoenix disbarment and general experience in the legal world made him cynical)
(Warning: This paragraph has spoilers to both Investigations games!) Similarly to Flashback Phoenix with 3-5, I think Gumshoe gets high confidence levels after very validating experiences. 3-4 Gumshoe is so excited and confident in his own abilities, and that case takes place after his ass got saved in I-4, plus having established a good work relationship with Edgeworth and after having gotten himself promoted to the detective division. His behavior in 1-2, I interpret as just him loving the continuing effective work relationship with Edgeworth, because before Phoenix, Edgeworth hadn't lost a case. And in 4-4, Gumshoe had just gotten his pay raised, which was basically his one massive conflict. Yes, sure: His inclusion in 4-4 can very well be assumed to be a cute throwback to the trilogy, but point is, I think he works quite well here, given the timeline.
I think we largely agree on Hobo Phoenix, I love him too. While I can see what you mean with Flashback Phoenix, as you'd guess, I'm not bothered by him due to the validation he was given in 3-5 by Mia. Her basically saying "My work here is done, you are a worthy successor" combined with Phoenix snarky inner monologues, I think makes for a pretty cocky combo. Maybe a bit overblown given how he showcases significant ignorance despite himself being a successful rookie at one point himself, but I really don't think it's an issue. If anything, it further paints just how much of a "highpoint" he experienced. If there's one thing that I do think is kinda... weird... it'd be how defeated he almost immediately is at the end of the flashback. I think he could've showcased more restrain there.
Good video! As you say, AA4 stuff, and the game in general I think, makes for a very interesting subject to talk about because there is so many intentionally differing creative decisions that the game had, that makes it easy to discuss. (That's partly why it's my favorite, it honestly kinda haunts you lmao)

I quite like Emma in this game as well. Having her fail at her goal and seeing her personality change was interesting

Hobo phoenix is such an interesting way to work with the character that completely caught me off guard. I could never expect they would get the main character of the games and show him in the future like this, and i loved it all the way through.
He changed. In some ways he seems like a husk of his former self, without his badge and working in schetchy schemes. But when you look some more, he actually evolved so much, being much more intelligent and less naive, his years of court and life experience made a real difference.
I understand why people like him as his main character personality, but it is kinda limited, and as NPC wouldn't work well. Some of my favorite Phoenix moments is when the players isn't in control of him, like his hobo appearance and first half of the last case of AA6
Anyway, i wish we could see more of hobo phoenix in AA5~6. He could get his lawyer title back, but i wish he was less naive and emotional and showed more experience he learned along the years. We already have Apollo and sometimes Athena to fill the "idk what I'm doing" protagonist role, and it's so weird that as soon as he gets his badge his old self completely takes control again......

Yea the journey from AJ to DD wasn't consistent. A different team took over but I do agree that I like Hobo Phoenix more than DD and SOJ Phoenix

I'm pretty sure that we all know at this point that executive medling resulted in Phoenix being cramped in to this game in spite of Shu Takumi's contant OBJECTIONS. I feel like the story and plot had to be written AROUND Phoenix's forced inclusion which is why we got "the passing down the torch" story seen in this game.
And you know what? I feel if Shu wasn't forced to do the bitting of his bosses then we would have probebly gotten something WAY better. I'm talking about The Rivales Family. In the game we got all they do is shoot Wokki Kitaki in the heart and that is where their involvement in the game ends.
If Phoenix wasn't cramped in then I'm pretty sure that The Rivales Family could have served as the perfect antagonists for Apollo to go up against. Having them be the villians would make case 2 and 3 no longer filler. Case 2's killer could be a spy sent in by The Rivales in order to take over The Kitakis so The Rivales can assimilate them and Case 3's killer could be in charce of their smugling network.
I don't know what Trucy and Kristoph's role would've been, but I'm pretty sure that having Apollo face against a criminal gang sound a lot more intresting than the story we ultimately got, no?

Bringing in the Rivales family is an interesting idea. I don't know if I'd take it over what we got but still a cool idea to get them more involved than they were

I think it's dumb the judge disbarred him after everything the prosecutors got away with in the original trilogy, but I agree with your views on hobo Phoenix (to me he was how Phoenix should of been for atleast 2 games lol)

I don't really mind his personality that much, but I just hate the concept of hobo Phoenix. We helped him build a name for himself over countless cases, and then suddenly he shows up acting like a layabout, wearing sandals. As a fan it broke my heart.

Trials and Tribulations will always be the true ending of his character to me, since this what the creators wanted before Capcom basically forced them to put phoenix in the Apollo Justice games

@@Extreme11 There's a lot of videos on CZcams that express their dislike for Hobo Phoenix. Watch GameXplain's Apollo Justice discussion and Jack's Melancholy Palace's video about Hobo Phoenix where he talks about how he initially despised the idea of Hobo Phoenix.
If you type in "opinions on Hobo Phoenix" , you can look at the results and see many disagreements. Also if you want to see someone get really pissed at Hobo Phoenix, look at GamingMagic13's Apollo Justice playthrough and just look at his first reaction to Hobo Phoenix in Turnabout Trump

@@DerpyHiro Speaking off GamingMagic13 (gonna call him Trevor from now on), when I watched his Daganrompa animai review he was teasing that he gonna do a review on Apollo Justice. Then at the end of his Toy Story 4 review series he out right states that he's gonna focus all his attention on making that video series in tantum on with his LPs. Then some time later and Trevor states in 1 of his COOP livestreams he's putting the review off as he's now focused on the Halo tv show. Then in another livestream and his 10K subscriber Q&A (my comment is featured in the Q&A as well) he out right states he has lost all motivation for making it explains that DD and SOJ have fixed all of the problems he has with the game (he also tells anyone who wants further details to go watch those LPs and those vids are really long) and that - unless the game get's ported - he's not gonna continue making the review for set game and is now instead focused on reviewing Pixar movies.
I mean, I get, but it still feels shitty being promesed something only for it to not come true and to then go watch over 40 hours of content in order to get a true grasp on things.
