  • We finally have a long awaited update on what happened to my 2014 Silverado. As many of you have been following along, we deleted the Active Fuel Management (AFM) from 5.3L motor. Since finishing up the install earlier this year, we have not added finished the series and in this video we explain why.

    Appreciate the real story on this. Helps us shade tree mechanics know we're not the only ones who experience the unexpected and challenging-to-diagnose issues, even when we follow exactly what someone else has done successfully with ease. Apparently Murphy likes to haunt mechanics, too.

    What valve springs came on your new heads? if they're a factory GM spring, there was a run of springs coming from GM that has been bad and failing on engines (some as soon as 50 miles) or so of driving, including springs on new LT2 engines in the C8 corvettes. might be worth looking into if they're a GM factory spring. i just got a set of LT1 springs myself for my heads and need to see if i can find the manufacture date

    When the engine was put in did any body prime the oil system or before turning the engine over or starting? That had been my experience that you have to do with crank mounted oil pumps. I have tried before what GM, Ford, and Dodge said after engine installs and I have had the same results with the engine sounds. I changed the way of priming the oil system to force priming with using a pump and had great results ever since.

    I have heard that sound before. It almost sounds like an oil pressure problem. Your lifters are not getting enough pressure to pump up properly. Is it possible that in assembly a gasket material, ie, a permatex type of product has covered over an oil passage some where, or been sucked in to a port?Has the oil pan changed for some reason ? Or is it dented in ? I have seen the inlet sump pump screen to close to the bottom of the pan restrict oil flow and starve the engine. Good luck. I will follow to see the out come.

    Hey I have a question my dad recently got the engine rebuilt on a 2007 suburban 5.3 and got an afm delete and when the engine was installed it made this exact noise and didn’t want to run and didn’t have much power and makes this horrible noise when you put some gas keep in mind this all happened today. The mechanic said that we needed to get the truck reprogrammed Bc the motor wasn’t going to run right without it is this true?

    • @TheSundaeDrive

Lifters started rattling after 4-5 mins running as we warmed and attempted break in. Noticing a new idling running oil pressure of about 5! #@$* ?. I did an afm delete on mine with a tuner. I left the afm lifters and cam in the engine. It's been running smooth with a little lifter noise on cold startup that goes away after a minute. LS7 lifters are known to be noisy if that's what you used. Sounds like you got a few bad ones.

    I just had a professional and reputable local shop do an AFM D w/ oil pump on my 2014 Silverado (with 55k miles) and have the same noise. After, warmup the noise goes away but I noticed when while I pulled a load the noise returned and then quieted back down again. I have alot of knowledge and mecanical skills (Master Ace Tech) and been thru numerous schools over my life time (I'm 61) I certainly don't know everything and am constantly learning. I need to watch all your Vids and see if you've found anything. To me, mine almost sounds EGR related but I dont know how or if their using EGR. Thanks! Also the shop had a rough time with the software side of this. They said it was a tier 2 ?. This is deep but maybe it has somthing to do with timing advance and retard with warming up included in the mix. Mine idles smooth and quiet after warmup. It's rough and noisy on the passenger side bank during warmup (and sounds more like exahust) I am searching for signs of any leaks.

    What's the difference between DoD delete mechanically or with a tuner?

    • @TheSundaeDrive
      @TheSundaeDrive  Před 3 lety

      A tuner just disables V4 mode but the engine still has special lifters in it that collapse to turn off 4 of the 8 cylinders. Since there are 16 lifters total, that means 8 of the lifters are for DoD. Any single one of those lifters is prone to failing and tuning them out doesn’t technically solve the issue.

      Break the seals in your VLOM
      Then install a metal « barrier » in your oil pressure sensor on top of the VLOM.
      + Range you’ll be fine and dine

    each oil change)= very expensive fully synthetic Oil, Bottle Lucas synthetic Lube , and often Oil change, not longer then 3,500 k miles , Lifter will last till engine makes 350.000 miles
    And then just buy From Amazon RANGE DEVICE
    THAT'S ALL

      @TheSundaeDrive  Před 3 lety

      Frequent oil changes and the range device should extend the life but I'm not sure if the is failsafe. How many miles are you up to so far?

      I'm using that Oil changes procedure ever since,
      And just start Using RANGE device recently ,
      I feel my 4l60e downshift so smother, never before,
      I don't know how long RANGE DEVICE will work,
      God will help
      But i feel sorry for my truck i didn't knew for this device 3 years ago, when i just bought a truck.

      (1. transmission downshift, and nbr. 2. trying to avoid future valve lifters problems, ) bec. Truck is 2007, Rite

      Fortunate you were changing the oil so frequently. The AFM on the older trucks has a much higher failure rate than on my gen and newer from what I understand. Of course, not everyone will experience the issue. I wish you the best of luck!
