  • Getting to do the Chatooga at high water fo the first time earlier this fall blew my mind on just how sick of a big water run it is. When another huge storm hit, almost all the creeks were blown out, but that meant the Chatooga was back to richter flows. The Voorhees had just rolled in, so couldn't think of a better place to start. It ended up being even higher than before, so we decided to head up to do section 3 into section 4. I cannot wait to get back there, especially with a playboat. The amount of huge waves, holes, and kickflips was mind blowing! I am already looking forward for the next storm because I gotta get back there!

I guided that river for five years back in the eighties. Highest I ever saw was 2.5’. In this vid, I recognized the takeout on Tugaloo...that’s about it...🤣

@@connorcoultas9629 I think you are right; I was looking for a glimpse of the put in or the 76 bridge, but Mr. Jackson always edits out the "boring" parts...although I'm sure there was material on this run that could have been good for 5 or 6 15 minute vids...I would pay for the footage from the drone they were using to scout the five falls!
I thought for sure I would recognize Woodall into 7 foot, but I missed it. I'll never forget a dynamic rear ender in a glass slalom K1 at 2.5' at 7 foot...

LOL! Yeh, I could never have imagined such a thing when I was 'yaking back in the '60's and '70's. It would have been very helpful on some of the trips we took, particularly in certain stretches of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison where either side of the river was sheer canyon wall and you couldn't get out to recon it. We were the first team down it, and it was considered class 7 before we did it, so we were pretty much on our own figuring out how to run it, and where the sheer cliffs were, we pretty much had to read the river on the fly. As I said, it was considered class 7 before we did it. One of our team members quipped afterward that it was now class 6. 666. Hell on water. Much of that run is now drown under several reservoirs, one of which only has one road in and out. When we ran it there was no road there. They had to blast a lot of rock out in order to make one.

The thing that used to scare me about big flood stage water like that wasn't the water. It was the stuff in the water. I've seen entire trees going down rivers in the southeast like that. Also, when trees are going down a river, narrow spots which were just fine an hour or two ago could end up with a strainer in it, and if you hit one of those, boy howdy it's over. New a guy who died that way.

Great lockdown entertainment. I'm a retired oldster and before the internet the only way to guess what creeks and most rivers were doing in the Portland area was to call for the regional USGS for the water level morning update. That lead to some close calls. One time we got on Copper Creek in the E Lewis drainage, which is actually a really good run at high water...but not when it's brown and full of debris, lol. Ended up leaving our boats in there and coming back the next weekend. IF your ever in the area and can catch it, Copper is a fun run, just not when it's brown and muddy. We were running this a few years before the LWS was 1st run.

At this level there's probably several meters of water between the surface and the bottom of the river. And if you mean the intentional going upside down off the back of a wave its called a kick flip and its an aerial move so they are out of the water. Hope that helps.
