- Fantasy Falls is one of the ultra classics of California, and one the best runs in the world. Fantasy Falls is one of the more high volume feeling runs of the season, with a ridiculous amount of whitewater. It has everything from slides, to drops, to some of the stoutest sequences you can do. In 2018 I did the first Fantasy Flush, which is where you run nearly the entire run without any portages. There is only one portage acceptable to consider it the Flush and that is a manky sieve rapid near the top of the run. Besides that you run every rapid on the run, including the big 3 which are stout enough on their own. It is a rowdy few days when you do the flush, especially at higher flows like we had in there this trip. It is just as glorious if you just do a normal lap, but when you do the flush, it makes it all time!

I wish I could be just as disappointed with those lines Dane just made. If I can get to the end of a grade IV and be in the same zip code of my boat and paddle, I would consider that a success and not be disappointed 🤣🤣

@@petertaylor123 The grading system badly needs upgrading. It's laughable that both the Upper Gauley in WV is Cl 5 and a run like this doesn't grade out to a 9. They're not even in the same league.

I laugh that everyone of the overnighters that you have to backpack in, you don't have a setup. It actually is pretty funny yet it shows us all that you don't have to have all the gear to go have a great time. Thanks for the fun time again.

I’ve worn this type of necklace for a while. But this particular one is from my dads new company Apex. You can actually buy them
2+ hour hike, just wondering if you couldn't have found something compact with wheels to take all that gear?
The guys I was with did have a bike with a trailer. But the biggest thing is once it’s at the top you would have to leave it as anything you bring up also has to go on the river.
Can you do a breakdown everything you bring with on a normal day and a overnight trip?

That's an easy run compared to this one. This one is at the upper end of the scale for anyone. Class 3 paddlers can do most the grand without much difficulty. I did a high water run on the first high flow test in the 90's, I was an adequate Class IV paddler at the time.
Why are you using the zen 3 over the nirvana
I had been using the Z3 before the Antix. I spent nearly a year straight in the Antix so I grabbed the Z3 for these first runs. Decided to switch back to the Nirvana for the rest of the summer though.
How long has it been since you took a swim Dane?
Last time I pulled my skirt was on the Indus in 2019. But I did have to get out of my boat after Salto Maule start of 2020.

No, pro kayakers learn a technique called rolling where you use your paddle or even your hands to hip-flick and roll the boat up.
Even if you can't roll there is a cord on the skirt - the fabric holding you into the kayak - so you can pull it and gravity takes care of the rest. Unfortunately the downside of that is you are now out your kayak and probably lost your paddle.
Rolling isn't hard - it just takes a lot of practice to get consistent.
Although everyone goes swimming (having to pull the cord) once in a while, whether you got a cold shock and couldn't roll up or you are stuck in a nasty hole (a water feature where the water recirculates and keeps u trapped while being thrown around) and had to swim to escape.
Swimming is sometimes unavoidable but is completely fine in class 1-2-3 rapids with no consequences really. After that you really need a consistent roll otherwise it is dangerous and you will be swimming a lot.
Sorry for this essay just wanted to help out haha. I'm not a professional kayaker just a casual one - but I have watched every single one of Danes uploads 🤣 but if I have messed any terms up or made mistakes feel free to tell me.
