  • This is a direct comparison of the Rug Doctor and the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine. Click for more information.
I chose to compare the machines on a very, very dirty piece of carpet we have in our backyard. I vacuumed it prior to testing with a regular vacuum.
I wanted to make the comparison 100% fair, so I made sure to follow the directions for each machine. I used Rug Doctor Oxy-Steam Carpet Cleaner in the Rug Doctor along with the correct amount of warm water. I used Bissell Deep Cleaning Formula in the Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine with the correct amount of warm water.
The Rug Doctor's instructions explain that you are supposed to pull the machine backwards over the area you want to clean. The machine cannot be pushed forward.
The Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine's instructions explain that you are supposed to first push the machine forward over the area you want to clean while dispersing solution on the carpet and agitating the area, then pull the machine backward to pull up the dirt while still
dispersing solution and agitating the carpet.
I feel like it was fair to film the machines first going forward and then backward at the same pace. You may disagree, but please note that we gave the Rug Doctor a few extra passes just in case.
Please feel free to ask questions below.

For what it's worth. We just got the Bissell Big Green and it blows away Rug Doctor. We have rented Rug Doctor machines 5 or 6 times in recent years. We just got our own Bissell Big Green and it cleaned out spots/stains that multiple Rug Doctor rentals missed. Our carpet looks brand new all these years later. In fact, we once had our carpet professionally cleaned. The Bissell removed stains that the "Professional" cleaned couldn't remove. Bissell all the way!

I've rented the Rug Doctor in the past. It worked but not great. I bought the Bissell Big Green and used it for the first time yesterday. It did a much better job than the professionals I hired last year. I am really happy with this. If you are looking to purchase or rent a machine to do it yourself, definitely go with the Bissell. You won't be disappointed.

As someone who's used both, I prefer the Bissell. It seems to have better suction as the carpet comes out dryer after each run. It's more compact and user-friendly. The clean water tank and dirty water tank come out of the unit with a handle to clean out and refill easily. The brush on the Bissell is a rotating one instead of a forward-backward one.
Both leave absurd amounts of soap residue behind and that is a problem. Have you ever touched dried soap? It's sticky as hell and will attract dirt to your carpet. So after you finish running through the carpets with a soap solution mix change it out for hot clean water and run over the carpets again to scrub off any leftover soap.
Or get a garden hose with a fine mist and spray the carpet lightly then just use the carpet cleaner to scrub and suck the water out.

@@kendus01 Yes, I've tried that using a spot cleaner for auto carpets and it works perfectly. Even the smoke odor came out. Simple green is good to tackle the stains, and the oxy cleaner for the smell.
I bought 2 spray bottles, one for the simple green dilution and the other for the oxy cleaner solution.

Very nice video. I actually purchased my Bissell a week ago and just watched your video. It's imperative for any carpet cleaner to go back over the carpet a second time with just hot water. This will draw out the soapy residue and clean even more thoroughly. The Bissell will clean forwards, backwards and that alone saves a ton of time. Plus it barely leaves any moisture on the carpet. Thanks guys for the side by side comparison.

This machine with the pet solution did wonders. The carpet was an off white. The water was literally black and the carpet looks, but mostly, smells new. I had rented the other brand in apartments I had lived in previously. It wasn't nearly as good.

When I use it, I operate it for about half a day doing multiple rooms or large areas. You're right, the Rug Doctor is a pain to both fill and empty. I hope you like your machine! I bought a Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 for my home personal use 5 years ago; with 3 DLH kitties in my home, purchasing carpet cleaning services 2X a year got old and the cleaners couldn't get all the stains out completely (I was told). So I researched it, got the RD Pro, and my experience was NOTHING like this video! ALL my carpet stains were gone! AND my carpet was dry (in stocking feet) 3 hours later. I was astonished then to the point of giddy laughter; still love that RD Pro today. (Note: I've never used a Bissell, but my experience with a RD Pro is NOT as pathetic as the RD in this video! Basically, after my purchase research back then, I purchased the RD MPX3, followed all the instructions for cleaning and cleaning solution, never went over the carpet area more than twice as recommended; like I wrote above, was very impressed.)

I tried a rental unit from PetSmart, which is identical to the Big Green cleaning machine, just rebranded with a different color and name. I was quite impressed with not only how much cleaner the rugs were compared to the Rug Doctor, but how much more dry they were as well. Ultimately I purchased the Bissell.

I bought a basic Bessel carpet extractor (Quick Steamer) from Wall-Mart for around $90, and that was 10 years ago. The basic carpet cleaner machine has been very reliable and does a reasonable job for its simple design. This week, I did a once over with this steam cleaner and the carpet looks amazing as my landlord commented. If you clean your carpets on a regular schedule, they stay looking clean and any grade of carpet machine makes a difference.

This video was what I needed to see with my own two eyes to decide that Bissell did a way better job than the rug doctor. Years ago all I used was the rug doctor. Albertson's rented them but they were the red ones. Never knew there were blue ones. They were heavy but I thought they were supposed to be so they can suck all the water up which in turn made the carpets dry faster. The red ones were their first. Nice comparison test guys. Here are somethings to consider for your next test:
Make sure you pre-vacuum well up to 80% of loose contamination can be removed during this step.
1 wet and 2 dry passes will give you your best results. If this Bissell works in both directions great. Keep water as hot as possible every 18f degrees 2xs cleaning power.
Over-wetting is a big problem anything wet after 24hours will start to grow mold

The rug doctor seemed to clean just fine, but I wanted something that cleaned forward and backward and had 2 tanks that were easily taken out and cleaned. Rug doctor bottom tank is part of the base so you have to lift the whole machine to empty.

is it ok to use Rug Doctor cleaning solution in the Bissell Little Green (14005)machine? What precautions should I be aware of if I do?

Robert, at least take comfort in the fact that some of us understand how valid this test is. You are working on the same piece of carpet with the same real-world wear, you run the machines as directed at the exact same speed, this isn't some hyped-up infomercial, etc. etc. LBCAndrew seems to miss these points. And even if his one point (that you would reset the rug doctor for a second pass faster) is valid, you did allow multiple extra passes to the rug doctor. Some people are hard to please

  • @markmolinari777
    @markmolinari777 Před 2 lety

Did you use the same cleaning solution in each of the machines? Also, fill the water tank with HOT water and not just hot water from a faucet. Bring 1.5 gallons of water to almost boiling on the stove and fill the water container with that. I just rented a Rug Doctor the other day. Used really, really HOT water with the solution & I was very happy as to how it turned out.

+ashrok0708 I agree with u. I have a new rug doctor and hate seeing it get beat but i guess your eyes dont lie lol. seems like they both got it clean but the bissell may be a lil faster. i wonder how much water the bissell holds. if it doesnt hold very much then the rug doctor may be faster lol. i dunno tho.

Guys the only difference here is that Rug Doctor dose not clean while moving forward only pulling backwards so it took 4x but The Bissell dose both forward and backwards same 4x dont believe me check the video again and count how many time Bissell moves forward and backwards.

Old School vs. New School. Love it! Still no comparison against the truck mounted professional unit but if I were a consumer in a pinch and couldn't get a professional...Bissell!

  • @coratotherescue1301

My only thought is that the Bissell is probably brand new, since it only recently became available to rent, whereas that Rug Doctor has been available to rent for years and may be an older machine. If they were both brand new machines, I bet that would make a difference, but for now, I'd go with the Bissell. Thanks for the info! It helped me make my decision!

Yes, several people have suggested this is a problem. However, the Rug Doctor is designed to only be pulled backward. You cannot push it forward. I suggest watching some videos on how to use it.

stains and smell! Thanks for the video!

Thanks for posting! Followup question - do you happen to remember if one fluffed the carpet better than the other? I'd like to clean some carpet that is very matted down and I'm having trouble finding information on which machine can agitate and fluff carpet better

Use a carpet comb after cleaning, The matted down is all the old oils and shet weighing it down, they are the same in terms of fluffing the carpet.

The one that takes out the most dirt will be the one that helps with the fluff. (Dirt is what keeps the fibers down)
A good cleaning followed by a neutralizing rinse then a pile lifting (counter rotating brush will helped the best.

  • @carlosdanger763
    @carlosdanger763 Před 10 lety

It appears that the Bissel was spraying water down while the person was walking forward so the water had longer to sit on the carpet, but the rug-doctor was both spraying water and vacuuming it up ONLY on the backward motion, so the water was only down for a second or so.

  • @PipeDreamerJacques

Having used a rug doctor three times myself, I'm a little surprised at your comment. You can only use it pulling the unit back, and he clearly has the trigger pulled during his strokes because you can see water entering the machine at the top. Pray tell, how on earth do you use a rug doctor?
