Does your rug need a doctor? Do you dread having your carpets cleaned, and wait till you can’t stand it anymore? The sad fact is, all carpets should be cleaned at least once a year. In low-traffic areas, carpets can go 12 to 18 months between cleanings, but high-traffic areas may need to be cleaned on a quarterly basis.
So in this video we’ll show you 5 Things you need to know before buying or renting a carpet cleaning machine.
• We’ll discuss the number one problem with carpet cleaning machines.
• Give you professional carpet cleaning advice when using them.
• Discuss proper carpet drying.
• Cover how deal with urine
• And review the steps necessary to have a successful do-it-yourself experience.

Great advice!! Thank you! I'm renting a machine tomorrow and so glad I saw this first!!
Ok zg.
I know Im quite off topic but do anybody know a good website to watch newly released series online ?
Thanks Michelle! Remember you don't need to put the soap in the machine. Use a spray bottle or garden pump sprayer.
@@sagezayn254 hulu tv app Mr. In between. Russell Crow is binge watching it.
Hello I'm trying to clean carpet inmy car how do u use hand tool to do this?
I am a 40 year carpet cleaning veteran and I give this a thumbs up
Thanks brother! I own a carpet cleaning business. I made this video, not to attack the business model of the rug doctor. I made it to help people get better results with a rug doctor....they still call me after having used one, lol.
Ronald Harris what is the best carpet extractor to start a company with ?
@@monitoralmost7992 I started with Rotovac

I am a carpet cleaning technician I do recommend using a low pH rinse with a boosting agent that is a low pH that will not leave a horrible residue in order to get all of the water residue and soap residue you must do a lot of dry passes also make sure you pre-treat stains before going over any of your spots with the machine Always vacuum first before doing any deep carpet extraction and pre-treat stains first as well When doing wet passes and dry passes make sure to go over it slow until all water and residue is removed
Hi
I used too much detergent. What should i do?
THIS SO WORKS! No soap on the machine. Amazing results. Stubborn
Dont forget to subscribe....
Thanks a million for the advice!! This just all makes so much sense even if I have little experience with carpet cleaning. I just know its right bc Its common sense when you wash something with soap, you need to rinse the soap out after
I don't usually comment on videos but this was a-mazing! Thank you for putting these instructions together, really appreciate it!
Fantastic video. I purchased a Bissell vacuum cleaner and followed these instructions. 👍👍👍👍
Excellent advice I was thinking the same about applying the soap at the same time then quickly removing it 👍🏽
I got brilliant results on 10 year old, very tired and stained carpets following your advice. I've hired machines before but never got anywhere close to the results I'd hoped for. Thanks from over the pond for sharing your expertise.
You should always be able to get your moneys worth, especially if your the one supplying the labor.
I’ve had a carpet cleaner for years and love to clean my carpets before I have company around, visitors are always so impressed by how clean my house smells, definitely recommend!
Thank You Frank! I am renting one tomorrow for a move out glad I saw this first. Very useful video!
David Banner thanks for watching.
This is a great video. I really like how he teaches you step by step.
Thank-you :-) I rented a Britex form the Woolworths down the road and used your tips. The carpets have come up so good and didn't need the defoamer. Glad I saw your video first.
Market Power PLugin Glad I could be of service...😊
Wow never wouldve thought it was like washing your hands. It makes sense. I will be trying it today/tomorrow and will come back for review of your technique.
Thank you!! It is gonna be my first time I rent a carpet cleaning machine. I going to spray the liquid solution first and then just hot water and finally dry pass!
The most informative video on the Tube.. thanks man.. I’m now ready to tackle this carpet.. 👍🏾
Producing a new video soon on powersports....
I do this but just slightly different. I use a pre spray carpet cleaner on all the stained areas. Let it sit for around 15 to 20 minutes. Then I use my commercial grade carpet cleaner, which we know is more durable, has 2 motors, one for the brushes and one for the suction but still isn't a "true" commercial grade unit to clean the carpet. The first go around, I use hot water and detergent but only 1/2 what they call for. After all, I have that pre spray on too. Then I go over one more time but use only cold water. This is to extract any soap residue as your 100% correct that soap attracts dirt!
If your doing this, you need to go slow!!! It may have great suction but still nothing compared to the true industrial units.
Finally, when you vacuum, again go slow! I've used Bissel, Shark, and Dyson. But the bagless vacuums don't have as much suction as a bagged vacuum cleaner. I use a Riccar where the bags collect 99.99% of dust, dirt, and other micro things. In 3 homes I've owned, both brand new and used, after 1 year or less the carpet had to be restreched. It really has suction. And you'll get your carpets cleaner if you vacuum like your using a carpet cleaner. In all reality, most vacuums are similar in nature. But people tend to vacuum way too fast! Anyway, it works for me. Like any job, the preparation is what usually takes the longest. Great video!!!
Excellent advice. I never paid attention to when my pro came to do my carpet that they sprayed the carpet first then used their steam cleaner but that is what they did and I am doing mine in two days because he is all booked up for the holidays and I need to clean it now, so Rug Doctor it is and hope it works.
That was actually very informative!
I like how I watched this AFTER I already cleaned my carpet with a rental. Not only did I add soap to the tank but I never did just a dry suction pass. Guess I will do it the right way next time. Thank you.
Glad I watched this. These definitely make a lot of sense. Will be sure to try number one and two when I rent this week.
Thanks for watching Jen. I hate seeing people get ripped off by these big corporations. As a professional carpet cleaner I end up coming in after the excessive soap has been added to the carpet. It literally takes 15 to 20 mins to extract all the soap the person left behind. People are often shocked when I ask them if they tried cleaning it themselves. They look horrified as if I was some sort of clairvoyant. This is the reason for the video. Glad I could help.
Frank Atwood makes sense....not only probably costs more to keep the carpet clean.....but all that soap being left behind can't be too good for the skin of babies, and younger kids etc....no matter how much I try to discourage him from it, I know my little brother practically lives on our carpet...playing around and when he plays videos games etc..... that could probably be irritating and/or drying to ones skin.
I was on a large film production set awhile back after the shoot was over. The professional carpet cleaners came by
The carpet was wall to wall over 1000 sq.f they did exactly that vacuum vacuumed then sprayed the whole carpet with a garden sprayer then did the same hot water pass and then sucked the water out. Then came the fans. The next morning the 30 years carpet looked fantastic.
Excellent video.
Thanks for sharing
Cheers 🇨🇦
Thank you!! This is so helpful!
I'm so glad I saw this video! Truly helpful!
did it work good?
Thank you so much...makes a whole lot of sense.👌
Thanks Eric!
thank you, gonna give it a go this week on carpeting in a condo we bought from some senior citizens. unsure as to the age of the carpet but it is very dirty. We will try to clean before we replacing it if necessary. fingers crossed we can get a few more years out of this carpet for less money than it will cost to replace. enjoyed your video and will use your methods. thanks again and PEACE.

Very helpful video, amazing tips. Thank you very much for this valuable information.
super helpful! Thanks!
Great advice, thank you!
Wow! Someone gave me a Bissell cleaner. Of course, it being a Bissell, it doesn't work. But it does vacuum up the water good. So I've just been putting the water solution on first then vacuuming it up. Works good. So I figured this one out on my on.
Well now that just makes sense! Glad I saw this prior to renting.
Just trying to help out a fellow consumer. Thank You Scott!
WOW that was very useful information, I've been doing wrong all this time. Now armed with the right way to accomplish a good cleaning from a professional, thank you sir.

Whoa. Cool. Thx and logical. I bought a rug doctor about four years ago and it still in the box in the garage. Now I can drag it out and figure out what I'm doing. These are good tips. So helpful! Many thanks.
Excellent advice. Glad I saw this
I cant comprehend about the instruction "never open the window until the carpet dry", I thought by opening the window actually help the carpet dry faster during the dry summer
Depends where you live
Wow I learnt this just in time. Thank you
MUST read before you rent a carpet cleaner. thank you!
I recently purchased a Big Green Machine, I will try these tips. I used the manufacturer's instructions on my walkway, and another small room, and I am not happy with the results. Thank for the tips.
Hi! Thank you for the video! I’ve never done this but hoping to use this before we move out of our rental. Please help me with these 2 questions:
1) How wet do u make the carpet with the pre-treatment spray? Or how much water/soap would you use for a bedroom area?
2) How long should I set aside for drying time? We need to leave the apartment right after we are done with this so can I leave it wet or wait for it to dry?
I'll keep this information in mind.
This is a GREAT video. I’m headed to rent a machine now and I am going to try everything stated in this video. I feel like I’ll have excellent results.
Thank you for your kind review.

(July, 2019) I bought a new Bissell Pro Heat Essential from Target. I've not used it yet, but I'm definitely going to do what''s said in this video and see what the result will be. Makes quite a bit of sense.
For some reason it wont let me respond to your question. You can use a number of different soaps. Carpet cleaning is chemistry. Soluble and non-soluble. Your simply matching the PH of the soil in order to remove it. You need only three things soap, heat, and agitation. If your missing one double up on the other two. Yes you need water too...
Thank you! I'll try this tomorrow. I wonder if I can make my own shampoo with products like resolve and the best products usually used for laundry, but since most companies are against this, I wonder if it's still possible to do so. Let me know if you can :)
Love this video.
thank you for taking your time to make this video!!!

This video has been amazing thank you so much I now know why my carpet is getting dirtier instead of cleaner it’s because I’m mixing the soap into the tank. Thank you so much for this advice
Notice how I did not attack the rug doctor? I just pointed out a bad business model designed to make you a repeat customer. This is the whole reason for me making this video. Most manufacturer's do this to get repeat business. That business is in the form of more chemicals or the renting of the machines over and over again....not cool and definately not good for you the customer.
Great video Frank
Fab vid, very grateful!!!

Thank You Nancy. I am writing a book called "Master Class The Ultimate Guide To Get Your Videos Ranking & Banking." So forgive me for not finishing up some links on my site. A rather good vid. with some sensible (Common sense) advice which is so obvious when you point it out. MANY thanks for this plain and simple advice which will save me £££ and Hours.

and THANK you, Mr Atwood, for accepting responsibility for this "child" of your analysis. I admire you for not posting this intellectual property and then leaving it to be an 'orphan'. Kindest regards.
Frank, I watch your video every time I clean our carpets with our home cleaning unit (which I don't do often enough, according to my spouse). Your advice on when to use the soap is top notch! Thanks once again for creating this (you used Content Samurai, right?)
Yes Sir, I did use Content Samurai which became Vidnami and now just got sold to Godaddy....Go figure huh?
@@FrankAtwood Yeah, sometimes it's tough to keep up with who owns a program, or if it even still works when you need it. In audio, I started with a program years ago called Cool Edit Pro...then Adobe bought it at some point, and suddenly it was called Audition (and now costs a monthly fee). And I see the Noble Samurai folks have shelved Market Samurai as well, which was a nice little program. Ah well...progress!
@@g.macfadden3223 I got the free trial of adobe audition so I can make automated loops of up to three hours. I am making some calm ambient music videos with deep-sea video footage. when I hit 1000 subscribers videos like these will allow me to get monetized again.

Thank you for sharing that helpul tips,so next time i clean my carpet it's gonna be like from a pro
I’ve been renting rug doctors and the soap makes it look clean, I return it, the soap dries, and it’s crunchy and not much better. This time I presprayed with arm and hammer detergent and then washed it with water. So much better!
I'm glad you had a better experience. You do not need a lot of soap to get the job done.
does arm and hammer detergent work good?
Grizzly ER yes it does! It worked much better than the bissel and rug doctor cleaners I’ve used, and it’s a lot cheaper too!
Dang! Thank you so much!!! :)
Thanks! Makes sense, hiring a machine tomorrow-
Ruth Richmond Your welcome. I am tired of seeing people get ripped off.
Awesome video!
wow! thanks!
Great info, thanks! Any recommendation on which cleaning solution works better?
thanks for the advice
Any time
Wow, glad I came across this. I plan on renting a carpet cleaner and most say to use the cleaner in the machine. I will try the diluted spray bottle technique since I am pretty sure it will work. I have a 12'X7' area rug I wish to clean. I've had it for 18 years and have never given it a really good cleaning. I thought of buying a new rug, but I have this really weird cat, who for some reason loves to lick the carpet. So, I have all of these small spots of clean carpet, all over the rug, just from my crazy cat licking the carpet. LOL. So I am sure that your method should do the job. Plus I am a little concerned for my cat, the less cleaner I need to use should be better for my nutty cat, because I know she will continue licking the carpet even after it's clean. I'll come back and let ya know how it turned out. Thanks again!!
Kelly S Thanks for watching Kelly. I wish you much success.
Awesome video tutorial!
Thank you. I had ordinary consumers in mind when I made it.
So glad I saw this video, thanks for posting!
One question - in order to reach areas too small for the entire machine (such as behind a toilet) can the upholstery attachment be used instead?
Thanks! :)
April Bonomo Yes, personally I would remove the carpeting from the bathroom. Sanitation being the number one concern.
Will a dehumidifier work in aiding drying time?
Overall good info, you should note that the soap spray should be measured per area as many carpets can have a deceptively dry-ish feel even when pretty soaked deeper down. Rentals tend to have much better scrub and suction than consumer grade machines but still nothing compared to professional van mounted industrial suction, 1 day to dry for the pro, 2-3 days for rental, maybe 5 days for a home machine, (if the carpet was actually deep cleaned, many consumer rigs barely skim the surface) actual times depend on climate of course.
But the advice to keep windows closed is absolute tomfoolery, it will not significantly reduce spores in the air and it will greatly extend drying time increasing spore germination, the only exception being very humid climates with homes having proper humidity controlled AC, in cool humid areas normal heating plus a modest exchange of fresh air is effective, in very cold climates cutting off air exchange[driving up humidity] can cause condensation under the outer layers of walls.
If mold spores are a huge issue at a location there are other factors about the structure that should be addressed but as a stop gap you can use 100ppm chlorine in your final rinse water. 1 tablespoon of 6% bleach per gallon is about 200ppm, but only use warm water if it is too hot to put your hand in it will deactivate the chlorination.
(chlorine also greatly helps to break up the proteins in urine and cat spray.
[cat spray is not actually urine, its more oily in texture, stinky, and is much more difficult to remove, chlorine bleach near pH 8-9(basically as it comes diluted with plain water, baking soda will also buffer to this range) is the only thing I have found that is at all effective and I have whole shelves of industrial cleaners, solvents(polar and non-polar), bases, and acids, even the urine enzymes. Though in theory peroxide or ozone could be effective, ozone is inconvenient outside of an industrial plant and I have not found the right combination of pH, concentration, detergents, time, and temp for peroxide. Used wrong it is either ineffective or bleaches out the color]
wolfedog99 Hey, thanks for viewing my video.
This actually gave me the confidence to go rent a carpet cleaning machine and think I’d be wasting my money!
This is why I made the video.
I was wondering why my cleaning results were horrible. The carpet looked patchy like soap and dirt stayed in some areas. I decided to just use hot water for another run and my carpets came out way better! Machine is a Big Green.
Why does he say NOT to open a window?
@William Keen What is a good rinsing agent to use?
Dude I didnt put the soap in, and my carpets look so nice! THANK YOU
Glad I could help! I ran a carpet cleaning business for the last 7 years. So I know a thing or two.
Great video. Can you please educate us about detergents and chemicals as well
The soap the rug doctor sells has brighteners in it. It bends the UV light to make the carpet appear cleaner. It yellows the carpeting over time. It is highly discouraged by Shaw Industries the largest carpet manufacturer in the world. I get my soap from a carpet cleaning store in Austin, Texas. It is synthetic like most modern soaps and PH balanced for routine cleaning. They also sell heavier PH soaps for restaurant grease etc. As for use, less is more...i dilute an 8oz cup into 1 gallon of soap.
