    LeBron James is a great man. The social justice work LeBron has been responsible for in America is something to be applauded, and through his charities LeBron has contributed good to this world. However, the enormous unabashed blatant hypocrisy he showed in the wake of Darly Morey's tweet that showed his support for the Hong Kong Protests was very disappointing. For LeBron James to call Daryl Morey selfish and uneducated and "only thinking of himself" for standing up for Hong Kongers' human rights is truly pathetic. LeBron is clearly being motivated by the financial incentive good relations with China presents to him, and was thus willing to sacrifice his integrity to try and shut down Darly Morey for supporting a social justice issue. LeBron just can't say no to that sweet CCP money being sent his way from China. Real social justice advocates, like Martin Luther King Jr, Muhammed Ali, or even Maya Moore, would be disappointed in LeBron's hypocrisy. We thought you were a better man than that LeMickey.

    Hong Konger here. Great content! Can't imagine how much effort you have put on learning the situation in Hong Kong. You understand the CCP more thoroughly than some people in Hong Kong.
    I was impressed by his playoffs performance in 2016 and 2018 but never one of his fans. Since his comment on what Daryl Morey have said, he loses my respect on him.
    Btw, glad to see people from other places supporting Hong Kong and whay we are fighting for. FREEDOM.

    It's not just that this guy doesn't have anything to lose but that he has so much to gain... There's a lot of financial incentive behind the wokeness when Nike, Facebook, Gillette, Twitter, and a slew of other big brands get behind the talking points and consistently claim to stand for the oppressed while systemmatically working against them.

He’s then asked about his favorite parts & it’s blatantly obvious he never read the book as he gives every cliche answer you can think of “just how strong he was & the powerful messages he conveyed” what?? So you never actually read the book is what your saying lol. Nothing specific or full of any details ugh

    Hong Konger-Australian here. I want to commend you on your Hong Kong history lesson!
    Also, if LeBron James stood with HK, then he could've for once gained fans from BOTH sides of the political spectrum. From what I've seen in Australia, there is pretty much no controversy in announcing their support for HK in a casual situation.
    Unless when you're around Chinese students, which I don't blame them for being like my dad - educated by the Chinese government from birth to be filled with hatred. (don't worry, my dad eventually escaped the brainwashing, and was the one who told me the terrifying education system of the Chinese government)

      @RedThunder  Před 3 lety +5

      Thanks for that man. Something I certainly hoped to do with this video was to educate people on what's going on with China and HK, and why LeBron's comments are so bad. As a classic white Australian with no personal ties to Asia, I'm glad to hear I didn't fuck up talking about a different country's history and politics.

      @@RedThunder For me I came from the other direction. I'm not a fan of basketball, so LeBron James' comments on HK was the first time I actually knew the guy existed. Your video actually made me respect LeBron James a lot more, now that I understand he isn't just "some punk with a bad mouth" - instead he seems to have done so many genuinely good things! However it also made his comments on the protest movement that will determine how safe I will be when visitng family, hit much harder now that I understood his basketball and social activism background.
      Can I ask which state, and if you're willing to share, which city you're living in?

    • @RedThunder
      @RedThunder  Před 3 lety +4

      @@kaihang4685 Ah ok that's pretty interesting. Yeah I'm a massive NBA fan, but have also always had an interest in history- particularly of other countries, including China. When LeBron's comments came out I already a relatively good understanding (from a foreigner's perspective) of stuff within China's history over the past couple centuries, such as with the opium wars, the revolution, the civil war, and also had been somewhat following the protests in HK. So when he made those comments, I feel like I probably had a better understanding of the context between China and HK than your average westerner, and thus was even more disgusted by his comments. But it was probably the unfathomable hypocrisy that shocked me, considering the numerous times in previous years how he's said he doesn't care about the backlash for his support for social issues, that everyone should be able to speak on what matters, etc etc.
      Also, I live in Melbourne at the moment for university study, although I'm actually from a farm in western rural Victoria.

    I'm a Cleveland guy, born and raised. I love LeBron, and have always. It hurt when he left the first time and second. I will always love the guy, because of what he did for us, and it wasn't anything that someone outside of Cleveland could ever understand. That said, his stance has always fucked me up, and the video is absolutely spot on that he carefully crafts his image to make him out to be an activist and he comes off as a massive hypocrite. This wasn't even the first time, he also did the same thing about Africa when he had an African teammate who was protesting something. There was another time too, but I don't remember the context.
    Anyway, great video. I don't think that I'll ever not like LBJ, it's a tribalism thing at this point, but I also am glad that people like you called him out on it.

    I also found it interesting that Lebron changed his stance on restarting the playoffs so soon after the Jacob Blake shooting, and chances are that it was because of financial reasons, but I believe that restarting the playoffs does more (and did more) for social justice because it gives the players a platform to talk about the issues they care about, whereas they wouldn’t be in the spotlight otherwise. So while it was almost certainly due to financial reasons, you could argue that they decided to restart it to be able to give more attention to social issues.

In any case, most of what I said I simply got from Wikipedia, which lists its sources if you were keen. And I do use a heap of screenshots of articles throughout the video that support what I'm saying. So those are also effectively my sources. But nothing I said, at least regarding the protests, is particularly controversial I don't think, as that's basically just what's happening happening

      Dude I'll respond to this comment as CZcams automatically removed the other one when I tried approving it. The main issue (and hypocritical part) isn't necessarily that LeBron didn't support the Hong Kong protests. It's the fact that he went out of his way to publicly disapprove of Daryl Morey's support for the protests. LeBron has said numerous times how fortunate he is for being able to use his platform to voice his support for social issues that matter. But when a colleague of his tries doing the same thing, just because the social issue he's supporting doesn't impact LeBron, he chooses to come into the media and basically tries to shut Darly Morey up. Saying that Darly is uneducated and selfish for supporting a human rights movement. Dude seriously, even if you agree with LeBron's decision not to voice support for the HK protests- that's fine; but how can you say it ain't hypocritical to try and shut his colleague up after they supported a contentious social movement- that's exactly what LeBron has been doing for years.

      @@RedThunder did u know what the hong kong protests were about? Insurrection. A straight coup d'etat. Daryl Morey who is part of LeBron's I guess circle, fully supported that without actually reading into it. And in part, so are you. Since the brawn is not a politician mind you he can't fully support insurrection of a sovereign Nation regardless of what his platform or beliefs are. Not even American politicians that are in office weighed in too much on it, and it would be detrimental to LeBron's image as well as career as well as the NBA's image and their future if they were to stick their neck out for a conflict between a nation and its people. This is entirely different than LeBron weighing in on matters of his own national security and his own African-American people. Many athletes have done this in the past extremely similar to LeBron: Bill Russell in 78 Muhammad Ali during the Vietnam war, many Olympic African American Brothers. They all have spoken for their own country and what they believe their country should do or shouldn't do. Never have they crossed the line like Daryl Morey did, and LeBron is just trying to warn him that that will end his career for doing so.

    I’m sorry but you can call Lebron a hypocrite if you want but the issue here is the dissociation with the black community in North America...majority of us have grown up feeling he have a boot on our necks (figuratively and literally) and most know it’s rare for anyone to be looking out for us let alone acknowledge our struggle.
    Saying Lebron sold out for money and using it to bad mouth him I feel coincides with the lack of being black because if you know any better you know not only Lebron but plenty of these black NBA players give back greatly to their black communities...how would that be possible with much less money? It’s easy to say “this or that player should’ve boycotted and gave up money” but the repercussions would have been much more dire to our race as a whole. Athletes and entertainers are some of the richest our race has to offer so when their wells run dry it would affect the black community as a whole. Also plenty of players were/are not even making that much money to begin with so them taking a financial hit from boycotting would also negatively impact them in the long run, something else players that get paid much more also had to take into consideration.
    As for the China debacle, yes Lebron’s comments are hypocritical but who cares...I notice it’s mostly white/non black people supporting the shit out of this vid and I see that as a lack of acknowledgment. Lebron is more focused on taking care of his own backyard regardless of him quoting Martin Luther King or whoever. I’ve never seen any form of outcry from Hong Kong about black issues in North America but nobody will call them hypocrites. There’s Hong Kong citizens screaming for justice and freedom but I’ve personally never seen any of them supporting us over here. Why is it only counted one way?
    Why in the world should Lebron cut off money that he’s funnelling into helping his people for people that have never shown to give a shit about his outside of entertainment, in fact plenty of Chinese/Hong Kong people are racist towards black people (Black Panther is the lowest grossing movie out of all recent MCU movies over there for a reason). In fact iPromise School has free housing for families who’s kids go to the school, why should Lebron jeopardize that for people that probably wouldn’t give a shit about those families. Cmon man, yes Lebron is hypocritical, tbh I’m a big fan (you can call me bias) but I don’t find Lebron to be the smartest of people in the world outside of basketball and business. He may not have used the best words in his own fight for OUR people but I find how he went about it justified, until Hong Kong natives and celebrities begin protesting for us at least...

    • @YungLanxx
      @YungLanxx Před 3 lety

      @Hamidaddy I support what he does for my people because who else is going to support us? Hong Kong? Yet you non black people want Lebron to give it up and sacrifice taking away from our people to suit yourself...when Lebron is one of the most philanthropic people in North America when it comes to giving back to his community, the money he’d lose out from speaking out against China (which would literally accomplish nothing) would take away from what he’s doing in his own backyard.
      It’s very easy for you ignorant weirdos to speak so freely on the situation with absolutely none of the responsibility while being ignorant to what it’s like to be in the position. I say Lebron is hypocritical due to his lack of awareness saying general things like “injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere” it’s clear that his fight is mainly for his people so it shouldn’t be a broad term but it still shouldn’t take away from the countless things he does for my people.
      I ask you what would be the point of Lebron speaking out against China other than pleasing people like you’s comfort levels? What would him speaking out accomplish other than a negative outcome? You people love moral ambiguity as long as it’s on your terms. If I live in a community and I have publicly stated everyone deserves safety and I’ll do what I can to enforce it and a murderer attacks the community I’m sorry but my household would be my first focus and if protecting others jeopardizes my families safety then I’m solely focusing on my family.
      As I’ve said plenty of times in this comment section Lebron shouldn’t be morally obligated to support people that have never supported his people which would in turn jeopardize taking care of his own. I’d rather at least my people be better off than both North American black folk and Hong Kong natives being fucked together because I guarantee you that Lebron speaking out would do absolutely nothing and you personally don’t have an answer for what it would accomplish either but it’s easy to call out the black man for not going out of his way for people that don’t care about his people. Yes I damn well support him in THIS situation regardless of his overall hypocrisy because it’s not as “black and white” as you people keep pretending it to be.

    If you really look into what is happening about Hong Kong, it is not about Democracy or Freedom.
    These are not peaceful protesters, these are violent rioters, the police are armed, not to suppress ralliers, but defend themselves from violent mob of rioters, these mob are not out protesting for freedom, they're pleasing the Western NGOs insighting to violence, even to innocent Hong Kongers.
    Even to speak "Mandarin" or "Cantonese" is too dangerous, because Chinese people are being targeted as pro-China and getting beat ip, simply because they're from Mainland, even though they're not pro-China nor Pro-Democracy. This is one of the reasons why China implemented the National Security Law, because instead of coming to resolution, they're destorying the City.
    I am not pro-China nor siding with the Chinese government.

      This privileged white man is even trying to twist the narrative that Lebron out right picked China’s side over the fact of him sayin Daryl should’ve simply stayed out of it.
