Got same issue going with a 1971. Mech put brand new carbs and won't stay running without choke. I just sent him this vid as high prob cause proof.

@@alexcruz7719 Those 9.5s have their issues this one sat for years with gas in the carburetor and turned to varnish rock,H/A! Put yuor mixture at 11/2 turns warm it up and check mag to carb timing on you motor & in rare cases the reeds could be an issue. Thanks for commenting new video coming soon...........................

@@OutBoardTink62 Has brand new carb kit ordered by me. As we looked around the only thing we found was that there is something called upper carb screen (or something like that, a rubber piece with holes that seats on top of carb) missing. Could that be enough to ccause that only with choke on running? I have no clue.Anyways, I guess the mech is going to try re-checking the air passages. It runs on WOT but you can feel is running lean and when back to idle it dies if not on choke.

Air screen is a nylon plastic piece its a deflector for fod(Foreign Object Debris) Ive run them with or without no difference..First thing I would do is the basics a compression check then spark check(bright blue spark). Make sure that carb is absolutely clean & in synch with the magneto its adjustable. Pull the reeds and inspect them for possible crack or excessive gaps check or replace intake gaskets. I took this carb apart at least 10 times before getting it right.Verify that high speed passage jet is open in lower bowl follow what I did here . Make sure low speed needle hole is also clear & pull screw needle out and blow air threw it. Reset to 11/4-11/2 turns Good Luck! Get it warm & Run it in barrel with fan on it to adjust or on boat@@alexcruz7719

You helped me with this one. Doing a 1972 Johnson 9.5 . It would not idle unless choked. Would sneeze so bad, it was almost like it was missing. The carb had already been chem dipped a few days ago and rebuilt. Could not figure what the heck was going on. Took it a part checked the passage way you are talking about and sure enough it was clogged just beyond the drain plug. So I open it up and it did help. But now when I put the cover on it will not stay running. All most like the cover is robbing it of the air it needs. Need to get it out of the barrel. Thinking it might be catching to much exhaust fumes and choking it out. Anyways thanks for the video.

Edgar, Well when you can get a box fan and have it blow the fumes away as its running closeby . Also set the mixture at about 1 1/2 turns from closed .Should run with the cover on at that setting and choke in. If not lower rubber boot is probably buckled very common . You can change it its a job or seal it off with sprayfoam in the buckled area usually in the front ot back areas.Hope this helps and Thanks for the kind words. Give a thumbs up and a Subscribe if you havent already ...

Great job getting her running smoothly. I knew you would get it going good.
Some of those little carbs on engines are so hard to get clean.
Great job again take care my friend👍

These 9.5 were made for 9 years Johnsons and Evinrudes a big seller in its day many thousands made and many still around. Very popular and their carbs are tricky and I was a little to quick in the cleaning. It actually was blocked in 3 spots which is a little unusual in the lower casting. I have another motor same I thought about pulling it out and doing it up too now that Im back up to snuff on them somewhat,LOL! Thanks Chris for your continued comments..

You still need to richen the idle mix about one quarter of a turn left a little lean on idle I herd it sneeze a couple of times just turn a little to the left or open the mixture

Yes & needs to be adjusted in an open environment too, kinda chokes up in the little barrel. This motor hasnt run in years so it really needs a bay test. Thanks for your comment & Stay tuned I might do another..

Do you have to keep your thermostat or can you just take it off I ended up doing that to my carburetor and it fired right up and it started working really good.

I dont use them here on the East Coast saltwater on small outboards only. If you change it every two years thats good but nobody does. They corrode and block the cooling and in somecases bad overheating. In freshwater they do last much longer and I would use them...Hope this helps..

I just want to do the white top and sides its just me I know its not bad the way it is.I have it all taped up now been raining here last three days on and off. They say if you make them look too nice they can get stolen, LOL! Yes everyday is a school day and I dont do many 9.5 carbs so I wasnt too sharp on that carb but it was blocked in three places and I found out one after the other at different times. Thanks for watching I might do another 9.5 from my hoard...............

@@donk499 When I moved here in 2003 I scrapped and disassembled about 10 real bad ones & kept some choice parts lowerunits ,carbs, pullstarters etc. Also scrapped a garbage can full of small flywheels mostly 9.5HP.That was before E-bay pretty much. I kept about 5 of them.Yeah I stay away from them personally I prefer the 9.9-15HP and 10-25HPS models1950S-1970S.
