I understand completely why Rongpei chose to accompany Ruyi to the underworld instead of staying behind in that pit of spiteful vipers. That one cup of tea had so much meaning, and its a shame that most western audiences won’t understand the significance of this quiet moment. Ruyi is an empress, and there are strict rules on how a an ordinary person can behave regarding her. Rongpei could be executed for even daring to
sit down in her presence--much less drink from her cup or speak of intimate things. Ruyi is utterly demolishing centuries of conditioning and social expectations with that cup of tea. In this moment she and Rongpei arent empress and servant-they’re just two old friends reminiscing together. No other Empress would so much as consider such a thing, much less do it. This is a giant middle finger to the establishment and an acknowledgement of Rongpei as a human being. As an equal. Ten thousand thank yous are in that little cup of tea.

@@erekaviolin No it doesn’t. Not even close. How do I know? I live there. There is no equivalent social expectation. Even in medieval times monarchs on the west weren’t as absolute as those in China. The Emperor was literally worshiped as a living manifestation of Heaven. Divine. His empress was similarly revered as the mother of the nation. We have no equivalent for that centuries ago much less now. It’s a completely different frame of mind that shades this particular scene profoundly differently. I sat and ugly cried when she had Rongpei sit down with her, long before she actually passed away.

When Ruyi said to change the tea, she is telling Rongpei to find a new master. In the book, Rongpei actually said she likes the old and cold tea, indicating that she wants to follow Ruyi to the end.
Rompei played that scene beautifully. I felt every emotion she did.

When she sat and reminiscing about the past, this made me cried. She’s such a loving soul.
Ruyi is the epitome of someone that is wayyyy too good for their significant other.
From our time 2021, Ruyi is too good for her other half, but I don’t think the emperor considered her as his half (from their time.) There is a saying: “if you are a hammer, everything around you is a nail”. So, of course, there is no second thought, no consideration, even no consequence.

Yes he was the top and had lots of things to worry but he was jealous, selfish and just had not willingness to fight and stand for his women he was a man with no spine and always bowed to dumb things like blaming her for her sons death because the royal stars said her will out won her young son instead of the birth was breach and almost killed both but his young son did not make it. Point blank told her it was on her and she should have died for her son after the loss. He just looked to anyone but those that truly cared for him and blamed his distrust on others. He was his own worst enemy

Man I just bawled my eyes out in this finale. I fell in love with Ruyi, a made-up persona on the tv screen. She is just so beautiful inside and out. I felt every moment of her portrayal from the childhood romance, the anger and frustration of when she was betrayed and schemed against, and perhaps most tuggingly when she slowly lost her love for that ugly dude towards the end. It's like, I truly understood her when she cut her hair in that throe of sadness and anger, when she burnt the picture, the walk up the observatory alone to perhaps recapture what was already gone, the tea with Rongpei when she finally explained how she had actually stopped feeling the affection. My heart broke, but it broke slowly, and I actually wanted to feel it. This was such a quality time spent. Casting Zhou Xun to play Ruyi has been one of the best decisions made in the history of C-drama.
Actually, she isn't made up. The series is actually based off of real Chinese history, you can look it up if you want.

Qingying and Ruyi as names were made up in modern times for this drama and Yanxi Palace

We don’t know if she was kind or scheming like the other consorts
We know she cut her hair, but we aren’t sure why
So…even though the figure was real, the Ruyi we see on the screen is likely not the Lady Nara that historians know.

@@lovespeace9328 Ruyi is the STEP/2ND EMPRESS of Qing Dynasty. It is a good story. But so much heartbreaking scene specially the last few episodes but nevertheless a VERY VERY RECOMMENDABLE DRAMA but be prepares to cry your heart out.

I think he was so busy thinking about himself he never bothered to see others. All the women and children who loved him and his ego only saw there needs to him. Never what they gave in return. He’s the ultimate black hole that never really gives back
During the time on the boat, when she separated ways with him, she has said that the emperor never longed for any of the women only until they died. Then he had started grieving and started caring. Well that's true and that's what he exactly did after she died.

When Rongpei said "you have suffered a lot in the palace" my tears starting to fall😭😭its too painful for her to see her empress suffered😭and the way Ruyi mentioned all the deceased concubines i feel sorry for them😭😭

i cried... not for the Emperor and Ruyi... but for Hongli and Qingying. There's a ost by this drama 梅香如故 and there is a sentence that said, "若有来世，盼你我结寻常布衣。再相约不离不弃。" It means, if there is another life, i wish that we can meet again as commoners (civilians, 寻常布衣 is a reference to what commoners wear compared to the Emperor's dragon robe and Ruyi's Phoenix dress), and then we can uphold the promise of not leaving or despising each other. The lyrics were part of Ruyi's line in the drama "原来年少情深，也可以走到两看相厌." It talks abt the vicissitudes of life. (兰因絮果) 花开花落自有时日。

When Rongpei asked Ruyi if she still loved or missed the Emperor...she paused & sadly
she said NO....She lost that loving feeling.....GONE FOR SURE.....she had enough of his uncaring loved for her.
i believe she still loves the hongli she met and not the present emperor that is why it took her a long time to reply and she still remembers the past and speaks like hongli is a different person. she probably said “no” because for her hongli is already dead, when she was speaking to concubine rong about her first love it was as if it was a different perosn, i guess at that time when he fell for rong she was already falling out of love with the emperor. He had changed so much as she had said before she cut her hair, that it is like he and hongli are not the same. Maybe in her mind she separated the past hongli and present emperor to survive the pain.
Yeah, basically even the feeling of ‘hate’ is still a strong feeling towards someone..but once the feeling turns to ‘indifferent’ or numb, that’s already the dead end of everything, just like what Ruyi finally feels towards Hongli that she used to love

@@AloutkaKazawa I know in Japan there’s something called Seppuku or harakari, which was related to like suicide being as a form of getting your honor back or something, and I know in Egypt servants were often mummified and buried with the pharaohs and such but I wonder if Japan had such a thing. Was it normal for a maid to kill herself if the master died or was this a rare moment that only made her love and loyalty that much closer. Plus I imagine her life in the palace after would be horrible. Her master was basically erased, she “let her” die and such. So I can’t imagine she’d have had the best life afterwards.

There were many customs around the world that expected the human or animal sacrifice: in ancient India it was "sati" when a woman was expected to follow her dead husband on the funeral pyre; kings, emperors and warriors were buried with their hunting dogs, horses, servants, everyday objects, armour, jewellery. I read that feng shui has its origin in the mastering the art of establishing graves. Mankind had and still believes in a complex ideas of the afterlife, honour (not sure why you mentioned Japan and seppuku in the context of a Chinese drama). I must say that watching fragments of this drama one thing was clear: transparent democracy with parity, and equity for women is a must.

In a way Ruyi not only died of an illness but also a broken heart. After years of no love from her husband and him being cruel to her. Practically punishing her for daring to care for another man because all she wanted was someone to speak with on a more personal level. Making that man suffer physically while she suffered spiritually.
In the end all she was left with was a broken heart, memories of love from the past, illness and the last person she called a friend. In the end those two went to the next life and I hope Ruyi finds her real love again and so does Rongpei.
When ruyi looks up at the birds flying over and the music playing, I can’t help but get teary eyed. She looked up at the birds too after she cut her hair. I’ve cried so much for this soap opera, never has another show made me this emotional.

Had he forgotten that he promise her his love & protection but instead he continued to lust over new younger girls? Did not trust her? Ask her to force kill concubine who fell out of his favour? did not seek justice for her son? humiliate her? Believe all the lies? Killed her friends and bodyguard? And worst of all, very casually sent her to the cold palace to die? She had tuberculosis there and died from it. She refused medical attention so she could die therefore leaving his "golden cage" and she did this because after all that he had done to her, there wasn't any love left therefore no reason to remain.

falling lust over new younger girls is his duty. Having sex with only one girl can't provide enough sons for the royal family, because in that time the dead rate of new born baby is high, they have to ensure there are enough babies who can healthily grow into adult. Besides, don't forget all the other concubines are also coming from noble families, if the emperor only loves one particular lady, which means there could be one very powerful noble family who can get most resource and honor from the emperor, which threatens the others. Thus, these noble families and ministers will judge and criticize the emperor for his unfairness.

The Empress and her servant.. their acting is very good.. i feel it.. i can see it.. the souls, the expression, the emotions, the words.. even the small details, they deliver it perfectly.. they are not cry, but you cry for them..

Both ladies were phenomenal in this scene. I’ve not watched the drama but I’ve watched this scene twice and both times I’ve wept like a baby with an aching heart.
This version of Empress of the Nara clan is my favorite. The lense we view women with in history often assumes that if a woman had power, she must have been wicked and cruel to achieve it, and therefore when she falls (Empress Nara was almost entirely erased from history, most likely by Qianglong Emperor) she deserves it. But this Empress Nara, Ruyi, was never pointlessly cruel. She only ever defended herself and her loved ones, never schemed against someone unjustly, and most importantly, she truly loved Qianglong Emperor. I really like to think that this is more to what she was like, someone in love who let herself be pushed time and again by the man she loved, until finally he crossed the line beyond forgiveness and she had to give up him for good. I feel like with the way we've been learning about how misogynistic and inaccurate some of our takes on historical events have been, this rendition is possible.
there are still lot of woman in china and folklore that are known for their knowledge, wit, and power like Li Qingzhao, Cai Wenji, Hua Mulan, Wang Yi of three kingdom(all of them have been portrayed positively) and there are lot of man in power who are viewed as a tyrant as well like Dong Zhuo, Jie of Xia dynasty, Emperor Yang of Sui. It was so annoying to watch the times over and over again he mistreated women who wholeheartedly loved him and he saw them as nothing. Ruyi was the person he loved before even being emperor but after treated her like shit and expected her to still love and respect him. He humiliated her and disrespected their children who past by not giving justice. He constantly said he was alone when he had her who forgave and loved him until the bitter end and he still treated her like she meant nothing its said that women in those days wanted to be apart of the harem so bad. Not knowing power, struggle, death and loneliness is all they would get but never true love.
He even wanted her to help him win over that han girl that he went crazy over. How disrespectful to the empress. So aggravating? 😥

Main actress Zhou Xun is the soul of the entire act. At 46 she looks amazing and so is the acting. I would consider this is the end of the series; no need to watch the remaining!

Such a beautiful love story. Soulmates torn apart by the harsh imperial rules and duties. I remember in one of the last episodes, emperor said his love is governed by rules. That's his downfall. Ruyi's love is so pure that even the Empress dowager appreciated this. Ruyi coveted neither power nor position. But the Emperor didn't have his priorities set straight. Over the years, he slowly killed the great and pure love that Ruyi had for him. It's so true that when a woman constantly gets hurt, overtime, no matter how strong the love she had for her husband, it will eventually die a natural death; it will be such that nothing will hurt her anymore and will matter. Hope the spirit of beautiful empress Ruyi is now in peace.

This is so true. Ruyi said that consort Rong was lucky to have her young lover forever even though he died. Rong’s lover died early but the Emperor changed as a person as everyone around him schemed around him and he fell into deep paranoia and mistrust. He even stopped trusting Ruyi. Ruyi only had him and just wanted him to trust and love her but let his own suspicions and ego kill the pure and deep love they had for each other. I knew their love would never be restored when Ruyi cut her hair because it was basically a farewell to her old lover, the boy she once loved before he became mad.
The Dowager saw Ruyi did what she couldn’t accomplish in her youth herself. Ruyi remained true to herself while the Dowager became no better than the concubines that schemed against her when she was younger.
No one else had what she had. A gracious and classy Empress to good for him. I do think he loved her more than anyone else. They had childhood ties that no one else had but he couldn't live up to her high standards or equal her. She was so much better than him. So sad. She probably got Tuberculosis from the years she was in the cold palace. He was responsible. It's hard to watch this without tear in your eyes. Since she was a real historical person I hope she is at peace in God's care. She deserves it RIP beautiful queen 🙏💞
I personally think when she went to the commoners market , ate foods , investigated the debauchery etc , that was the time she got tuberculosis. Warm climate, too much crowd favours spread of tb than cold. Either way , emperor is responsible.

@@subratanandy2142 Cold palace didn't literally mean cold anyway, and it's also not a literal place. In this case "cold" meant disfavor, as in the Emperor's heart is cold to the inhabitant of the place, given the cold shoulder by the Emperor. Cold palace is simply where a concubine is confined after she has fallen out of favor, which could still be her original residence. Although costume dramas tend to portray it as a literally cold and decrepit palace where unwanted concubines are sent to.
@@anthyavila9726There isn't a specifically designated palace named as such in the real-life Forbidden City, but historians do believe that "cold palaces" where whichever location or set-up decided on by the dynasty in power at the time. They would most likely be a remote unused spot or multiple spots. The inhabitants were not allocated luxuries like coal nor quality food or adequate clothing, so I guess it would have been literally very cold in the winter months. In addition, "cold" could also be used to signify the punishment of being shunned and ostracized.

Even in death, Ruyi left the world with so much peace and elegance. Finally a free spirit looking for her youthful lover in the world beyond burdens with only joy and love.
If it was what Ruyi and HongLi wish, hope the emperor eventually found the youthful girl he longed for, standing by her favourite green plum blossom tree, waiting for him with a loving smile…
Life in the forbidden City must've been really strict and miserable. You get to be semi permanently stuck inside like a cage. Ruyi looking at all the palaces and all the structures before she passed away symbolizes so much not just their childhood but how her life completely changed when she chose to marry him and acknowledging everything that have happened in the last decades. And even her affection for Rongpei. It reminds me of all those characters in this series and the other series's as well before they passed away inside. It's powerful meaningful yet deeply sad. I still go back to this video or these scene of the series because it's the only scene in the entirety where the emperor truly showed so much genuine affection for Ruyi. Or at least a sense of regret and pity. And that it's in the very end and it's too too late but Ruyi have finally been set free.

But later I realized when someone is your biggest pain and regret and the one thing you feel most guilty about, you won’t say it out loud anymore. You took it with your heart silently.

A heart touching end. The life in Palace truly picturised. All the actors/actresses did well their roles. The Palace, costumes, makeups, lightings, cameras, picturization, story, screen play, background music, direction everything was so perfect. I appreciate & congratulate every one in the making. Though, I don't understand Mandarin language, the English subtitles helped me to understand to some extent.

When watching Asian historical dramas, I always wonder how much is true and how much is dramatically created. Wouldn't it be great to know what's true. It doesn't stop me from enjoying these plays and appreciating the talent of the actors.
I know a little what is true. A drama is half true and half based on drama. Ruyi is a little special because she was the Empress but is the only Empress, who didn't got the title after death and funeral.

I agreed however If you watched the drama you would know that it was actually her wish to be completely freed from him hence the reason she cut her hair she wanted to completely be removed from anything involving him even her picture of both of them that was painted she removed herself from the painting the way he treated her I would want to erase myself from the emperor cold and cruel heart .He has caused so many deaths among the concubines all because he’s such an self centered person who only cherish people only in death .
