Haha that’s just the writer’s wish, irl the emperor hated her right up to his death whilst he shut court( all business activities) for 5 days after imperial consort Ling died, it’s recorded that he visited Ling every single day right up to her death which left him devastated. He never loved Ruyi from beginning to end.

On a side note, in episode 67, Yanwan’s mother’s said that a fortuneteller told her something along the lines of “Yanwan has good luck but is ill fated while Ruyi has fate but no luck”. (maybe not a perfect translation) This is kind of true in the drama since Ruyi wasn’t lucky during her time as the Empress, but she died with dignity and with some form of closure. Yanwan died writhing in agony after losing everything, but she rose to the top and was given the name Empress after her death (a high position for a former servant girl).

The drama and the novel end satisfyingly in their own way. In the drama, I love how Ruyi made all the wheels turn behind the scenes despite being mostly confined. Yanwan's slow but sure downfall in the novel is pretty awesome too.
I've always thought tho, that Yanwan's way of making the Emperor fall in love with her is reminiscent of spunky heroines in more lighthearted dramas - poor girl climbs the ranks by being clever and charming. Unfortunately she was in the wrong genre and those seductions and her poor family background really bit her in the ass, not even mentioning the murders.

I think I like the series end more, but the novel is definitely interesting. So Yanwan really goes thru a similar misery as Ruyi did, but with basically no support bc she has no friends AND the emperor now doesn't even like her. It's interesting how she starts off becoming power hungry stemming from her being bullied as a maid and taught badly by her mom, to gaining all that power. and then in the end she's back right where she started. Being bullied and ignored by the other consorts, all alone and no leg to stand on. But this time she doesn't even have Yunche there to help her nor Ruyi to advocate for her as she had way earlier on. It's not as dramatically satisfying as Ruyi's banners, but intriguing still.
What a journey this has been!!! I've had a lot of fun watching this series. I've heard you're doing Yanxi Palace next. I tried to watch it but couldn't get past the first few episodes. Just didn't do it for me after seeing Ruyi. So I'll "watch" it through your recap videos instead

    Notes:
    1. most of these I actually wrote in my ep. 84-87 notes sorry :(
anyhoo I'll include parts that you missed
2.1. even *invoking Suoxin's name* didn't rouse Ruyi
2.2. Xiangjian: *At the end, the only one who cared for me was about to leave*
3.1. Jinzhong's "delivered a few things" was basically *ginseng* which would never have helped Ruyi anyways
3.2. Wei Yan'wan's outfit when she came to Ruyi was basically *the pink qizhuang she wore after Ling Yunche became Xiaolingzi* and Ruyi told her to "Get tf out of my palace!"
3.3. Wei Yan'wan cleaning Hu Yunjiao's prior history is expanded upon in the drama with Yuhu's investigation
3.4. Ruyi's last line was basically *"The Emperor will decide what happens to you and me" and "I'm so £ụčķıиĝ tired of all this bs"* ; and *Wei Yan'wan just basically Joker laughs like an idiot* until she couldn't anymore as well as pissed Ruyi isn't taking the bait
3.5. after leaving Yikun'gong Palace Wei Yan'wan was planning with Chunchan on *how to get rid of Ruyi*
    4. I know Hailan saw Ruyi đıę because she went in as she breathed her last, but I didn't know even Barin Yanfu & 7th princess Jing'yuan ( *who were summoned by Ruyi* in the first place) also followed her inside; I thought they just gawked at the smug Wei Yan'wan
    5. The "am I a tool" question was *from a conversation she had with Chunchan* not long after her children were separated from her
    6. details about Wang Fuzhi aka *Ruyi 3.0*
6.1. one day some Flower Bureau maidservants were playing soccer in the Imperial Garden, unaware that Qianlong, Wei Yan'wan, & Xiangjian were strolling around at the same time
6.2. when the imperial party saw the ruckus, Wei Yan'wan scolded the girls horseplaying, and basically *Wang Fuzhi spoke up as their representative*
6.3. it's *basically a deja vu of that scene in the Imperial Garden where Jin Yuyan was mistreating her* , though this time *it's Xiangjian in the role of Jinzhong* : Look at this maidservant, doesn't she seem familiar to you?
6.4. *Wang Fuzhi was "flattered"* with the resemblance to Wei Yan'wan (and by extension to Ruyi), and after some exchanges (notably Fuzhi's admission that *she prefers tending to old plum plants* ) *Qianlong orders her to accompany him*
6.5. when Hailan (Pimp 1) & Xiangjian (Pimp 2) were talking afterwards, Hailan basically said *Wang Fuzhi = (Ruyi + Hailan + Xiangjian) - Wei Yan'wan*
6.6. obviously *Wang Fuzhi is in the anti-Wei Yan'wan faction* (the "flattery" was only skin deep, as obviously she got coaching from Pimp 1 & 2 + Mongolian Consortium™)
6.7. Wang Fuzhi was later given Chengqian'gong Palace and later Yikun'gong Palace (see below)
6.8. someone said *10th princess was supposedly named "Jingxian" (璟嫻)* but I can't confirm if this is indeed true...
Kisses to the commenter who can explain why this is significant...
    7. Edit: I just realized, "That night, [etc.]", coupled with the context of Qianlong's remembrance of Haircut™ Day, Qianlong had in mind what Jingse (and by extension Fuheng) told him soon after Southern Trip: *Wei Yan'wan already knew what was happening, or was going to happen* hence why she brough Jingse to that private yatch just in time to see The Haircut™
(and Qianlong replied dismissively "Wei Yan'wan sure has such a long arm", and thus began his suspicions of her)
    8. 7th princess's marriage to Borjigit Lavandorji is in Netflix (as the sequel to "Yanxi Palace"), with Raine Wang (Hengti) as the actress
9.1. Jin Wan'yin is basically Consort Duan of "Empresses in the Palace" at that point
9.2. according to extant historical records *only after 50 years* was Lady Jin *promoted to Consort rank*
10.1. Wei Yan'wan's downfall was on the *eve of her 50th birthday* , and Hailan & Jin Wan'yin were bitter that Wei Yan'wan had the gall to even celebrate her birthday peacefully
10.2. the whole time Chunchan, Wangchan, & Wei Zuolu confessed *Wei Yan'wan was hidden behind one of the many screens*
10.3. *Wei Yan'wan rejoiced at Qianlong's agony* of singlehandedly destroying his relationship with Ruyi; after Wei Yan'wan was gone, *Qianlong was basically "I'm sorry Ruyi"* to the tune of Steelheart's "She's Gone"
10.4. Liyu teased Wei Yanwan by explaining *Jiang Yubin adjusted the herbs of the qianji poison* , hence why her đəąťн was slower than usual
10.5. Wei Yan'wan's last thoughts: *seeing her younger self as a Sinjeku maidservant running towards Ling Yunche* , *"I'm sorry Ling Yunche for not cherishing you before, I'm coming towards you."* , and the *yellow robe hanging by her dresser*
10.6. *Chunchan was ordered to announce her ðəąťң* in the guise of cooking breakfast and "accidentally" finding her, and that *the official cause be "heart palpitations"*
10.7. basically *Chunchan suffered the same fate as A'ruo* (even to the part where *Liyu force-fed the medicine down her throat* ), and as she was being carried in the palanquin all she could think of was being *sorry towards Lancui who didn't deserve that kind of betrayal*
    10.8. *Wangchan's fate is unspecified*
    11. after Wei Yan'wan's death...
11.1. there's a part regarding 15th prince Yong'yan & 17th prince Yong'lin, and it was related to *Wei Yan'wan's posthumous title "Ling'yi" (令懿) and Yong'lin could only ask why without receiving an answer* and Yong'yan supporting Qianlong while attempting to quiet his younger brother
11.2. an *old rumor resurfaced that Wei Yan'wan & Ruyi looked alike* , but even then *that rumor faded away as well*
12.1. lol Qianlong wants Ruyi free *but he is still pissed af* that *she wanted the normal lifestyle* and still views that as a *personal betrayal*
12.2. he even claims that -burying- shoving Ruyi's coffin inside Imperial Noble Consort's Chunhui's tomb is so *Ruyi can learn subservient obedience from Su Luyun in the afterlife*
12.3. Qianlong asked if Liyu made memorial offerings to Ruyi, and Liyu confessed that *for the past 9 years him, Suoxin, & Jiang Yubin were secretly doing it* , and Qianlong brushed it off, saying he would've had Liyu killed in the past for the crime of "deceiving the Emperor"
    13. oh you didn't include the *annex chapter* , which *occurred during the 9-year period*
13.1. *Qianlong had just celebrated his birthday* which was coincidentally the eve of Mid-Autumn Festival
13.2. in his drunkenness he somehow *ended up at the perimeter of Yikun'gong Palace*
13.3. Qianlong was Pikachu face!"shocked" that the once vibrant palace of the Paragon Mother of the World was *in a state of neglected decay* (besides the dust, Yikunmen Gate had peeling paint and patinated copper nails)
13.4. after kneeling for a long time well into the night (and ignoring Liyu's pleas) *Qianlong decided to appoint Wang Fuzhi, Noble Lady Dun aka Qianlong's It Girl atm (aka Ruyi 3.0) as the new mistress of Yikun'gong Palace*
13.5. there was a creepy di Caprio part wherein Qianlong *admitted "he liked them young" because they were still wild and outspoken* , just like Ruyi once was
(there was a similar line in the drama during infamous Southern Tour wherein he aired his dissatisfaction of his current concubines to Jinzhong, that *being rule-bound for years made them boring* , a hypocrisy considering he once chastised Xiangjian that one time for being "too willful" after being spoiled and pampered)

Wow, I love this show I rewatch it all the time, but hearing about how the book ends... I wish I could have seen that version put on the screen. The part where Yanwan finally gets to say what she wants makes more sense, she was put down and treated exactly if not worse than Ruyi for all those years and is as detached as Ruyi was towards the end. Her children hate her, no one respects her and she just lives in fear about what the Emperor does or doesn't know about her. The show version of Yanwan just speaking her mind instead of doubling down and trying to weasel her way out didn't gel with me.
I am curious if the secondary characters were talked about in the end and if so what were their endings like?

I kind of like this ending more than the drama ending, but I can understand why they rewrote it: 87 episodes is already pretty long for a drama, and given how depressing it got near the end, I'm not sure viewers would've had the stamina to endure several more episodes of people suffering (even if the person suffering is Yanwan---we get it, the palace sucked). Making Ruyi more morally upright also makes her easier to root for---I don't think scenes like her and Hailan celebrating 2nd Prince's death or A'ruo's 'cat punishment' would've passed the censors, let alone the audience. The show's ending also seems like a better end to Ruyi's arc to me, even if it comes at the cost of shortening Yanwan's and Wan Pin's: she gets to live to see Yanwan's downfall and know that Yongji, Hailan and the others will be safe from her machinations.
It also is more historically accurate for Yanwan to get away with it for ten years; I always did wonder who the hell ran the harem if the Empress seat was vacant and the Imperial Noble Consort didn't wield any actual power; probably the higher-ranked consorts (Yu, Ying, Rong) managed themselves and the lower consorts on their own, and since the Emperor likely wasn't taking in as many women as he used to, running the harem was easier than before.
Anyway, off to go comment on the earlier episodes.

You know a lot about Chinese culture, and I would like to ask about when Hailan swore in front of the entire harem, she said that if she harmed Yongxuan, may she be cast into the deepest pit of hell, never to be reborn. In Chinese Buddhism, is there a chance of being so evil that you're eternally condemned? It contradicts the concepts of bodhissatvas...

    • @KC-ne1vi
      @KC-ne1vi Před rokem +5

@@devchekhov7512 I'm not an expert on Buddhism specifically, but I can try.
There is actually a concept of hell in Buddhism, but it differs from the Western (specifically Abrahamic) concept of hell in that it isn't an eternal, divine punishment, but rather a natural result of accumulating a great deal of bad karma, which lasts for a long (but finite) time. There are also mentions of there being specific layers or 'halls' of hell, designed to punish sucessively greater sins. The lowest hell, Avici (Sanskrit for 'without waves', referred to as 'Mukenjigoku (lit. 'endless hell') in Chinese), is specifically for those who kill their parents, kill enlightened beings, or cause chaos within the Buddhist community. An average stay there is referred to as being 'innumerable kalpas', where a 'kalpa' is a length of time roughly corresponding to the entire existence of the universe. Specifically, it is sometimes cited as ~3.4 quintillion years. So, while one would eventually leave and be reincarnated, it would take an immense amount of time to do so. I believe that's what Hailan meant: the worst punishment imaginable, for a length of time incomprehensible to human minds. As far as I can tell, everyone is reincarnated eventually, but in different forms after different lengths of time.

And obviously, we can still see the bastard hasn't completely changed his ways with how he treats his women. In all honesty, if I were forced to live in a harem, I would like to live like Imperial Concubine Wang. Just chilling with no friends or enemies. but just remember! ula nara ruyi and hoifa-nara shushen aren't the same person! her time in qianlong's harem was all but erased, and we only know her now as simply 'empress nara', so it's _way_ more easy for writers to use her as either a protagonist or antagonist. it's specifically _because_ of what she did (cutting her hair i mean) that there's so many ways to interpret her reasoning.
historical palace dramas with female leads are often more like an AU than non-fiction. their first names we're never recorded, their personalities were recorded by the infamously misogynistic chinese archivists, so there's much to work with.
wei yanwan and wei yingluo are also two different people, and the same goes for fuca langhua and fuca rongyin. to be honest, it feels like ruyi's spirit is inside empress fuca and langhua's is inside empress hoifa-nara.

Learning Chinese or any language is a lifelong task. In this case it also depends on what kind of Chinese script you were taught. I had basic traditional Chinese, even though I have not used that for half a century, now I can still read, not the simplified modern version. I cannot write anymore, not even my name but will re-learn again. I grew up with 4 other European languages and they are comparatively easier (except Russian). If you can read traditional Chinese you will be able to read ancient texts. Our language did not change much over the centuries except when mainland China simplified it. I speak Cantonese and never learnt Mandarin, the language I chose in my French convent school. Now watching this series (and other Zhou Xun films & her other works - she speaks very clearly!) I am learning to speak Mandarin!! I think the novel was written in the new script and it is out of print too so I won't be able to get it to try reading it. Pity. I can't write in Chinese now, can barely read it (may I can read up to lower elementary standard), and usually I can uderstand what people are saying to me in a casual conversation and with difficulty, cobble an ineloquent answer. And this is me growing up ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia! If you like Chinese period drama series, the Hong Kong TVB 'War and Beauty' (2004) is good. It is based on Emperor Jiaqing's (Qianlong's successor) harem. It is a 宫斗剧, produced years before Empresses in the Palace/ Zhenhuan. Watched ALL the episodes of your recap series in one day!
    Brilliant!
    Waiting for more and more!
While watching these series I've started to refer to Wikipedia to get a clue of a historical background and the real-life prototype of each character. I guess the authors play around with the characters just like Alexander Dumas did. Thus, it's really cool to see how the same historical persons are presented in different tv-dramas.
Looks like, one of the most inspirational character of this historical period is YanWan.
BTW, why is she called "Ingluo" in the other drama?

Wait a minute. This is something weird with the princesses. First Princess (deceased) and Third Princess (JingSe) was Langhua’s, second Princess (deceased) is Consort Zhe’s, fourth Princess is Chun’s, Fifth Princess is RuYi’s, Sixth Princess (deceased) was Ying’s daughter and Seventh & Ninth Princesses were birthed by YanWan. So what the hell happened to eighth Princess?

    • @SolitaryBee-wd5wf
      @SolitaryBee-wd5wf Před rokem +3

The drama basically adapted 8th princess out by combining Consort Ying and Consort Xin together into one person. In the novel, it wasn't Consort Ying who was pregnant with the sixth princess but Consort Xin. In real history, Consort Xin is the mother of the 6th and 8th princess (also in real history, she dies a year before the step empress supposedly cut her hair on one of the tours to southern China with Qianlong as a result of birth complications from a miscarriage. I don't know how she dies in the novel but I wouldn't be surprised if it was because Yanwan plotted her death). Since the drama emphasizes Consort Ying's arc, she never gets pregnant with the 8th princess.

      @@SolitaryBee-wd5wf
Dai Meiruo became depressed af since miscarrying 6th princess, negating her "xin" honorary title (basically her cheerful attitude which was in the drama as well), and was basically sick every time she was mentioned
even when Ruyi kept encouraging Meiruo to live for her daughter 8th princess Jinghua's sake Meiruo can no longer tolerate life, and on her deathbed, Ruyi promised to take care of 8th princess
in RL Noble Consort Ying had no biological issue but was given 17th prince Yong'lin as her adopted child; apparently she spoiled him rotten and among his problematic acts was the disastrous aftermath of her 70th birthday party

      @SolitaryBee-wd5wf Před 11 měsíci +2

@@user-ix1rp9ff3p Wow, that is tragic. Not only does the 6th princess not survive and Meiruo dies from depression, but, following real history, Jinghua also dies at 9 years old in 1767, only a year after Ruyi dies.

Remember just get LiYu to do 30 scenes of impending doom and make sure there are many strands of long hair stuck in and the icky feeling of removing long strands from their butts crack. That is Li Yu and how he delivers his decrees. The confusing yet violating feelings of pulling a long strand of hair from your butt crack, you don’t know if it number 2but feels number 2!
