I’ve read some people say that Jia wasn’t probably smart, and that Zhenshu, her maid, was actually the mastermind. That’s why she was probably chosen by Jia’s clan to be the dowry maid and accompany her. And it kinda makes sense: after Zhenshu left the Forbidden City, Jia’s schemes got dumber and sloppy.
It’s never confirmed though, not even in the novel, so it may be that writers got lazy and decided to focus more on Yanwan than Jia’s scheming so they made her dumber. Yet the timing of Jia’s downfall and Zhenshu’s departure is perfect

    • @rodrigosalguerorivera6355
      @rodrigosalguerorivera6355 Před rokem +16

Wow this is a very good theory, the timing does coincide and many of Jia's early plots have said maid being the one to carry them out (yes, it might just be because she was Jia's maid from her maiden clan) but we cannot be sure how much of the success of those plots is due to her own discretion and intelligence.
The only problem, as you say, is that this is never implied, so we cannot be sure that it is the case, but it is certainly a very interesting explanation.

I was actually about to comment this. It's mentioned in the drama that Zhenshu comes from a family with a strong medical background and was a genius in her family. She would have known about the cinnabar and it explains why Jia was able to procure and take contraceptives safely and in secret when she first married the 4th Prince. It seems like Zhenshu did most of the leg work and fine-tuned Jia's ideas. Now Zhenshu is gone, Jia has gotten desperate, sloppy and has no one to actually straighten out her planning.

    • @Stinoco
      @Stinoco Před 10 měsíci +7

@@kandicefranky3253 oh true! I remember that Jia once mentioned that her maiden family chose Zhenshu for a reason I don’t remember now. I don’t think they chose a stupid maid but the smartest. And Qianlong returned Zhenshu when she confessed to her crimes. Other punished consorts are allowed to keep their maids, which means that in the confessions, the punishment department might have realized Zhenshu was the master behind Jia’s plans and she had to be separated from her mistress

This is like the one episode where I can SLIGHTLY admire Yanwan, almost. She's a really terrible person, but she can be resourceful and hardworking. Like that archery scene. Instead of just sulking after not succeeding at archery, she uses it as an opportunity to made herself look more endearing. I'll give that to her.

I go back and forth on Jia, but I think something broke in her during the first miscarriage. Losing her maid and her clan head barely giving her notice. I think she became more reckless and risky in her behavior that exacerbated her delusional ambitions.
Because as smart and intelligent as Jia was in the beginning, she has always been delusional in her ambitions and thoughts. One delusion was her obsession for the Clan head and doing whatever she can for him because she believes he loves her, and more importantly, thinking that she and her children ever were going to be awarded the top titles. Qing emperors only chose Manchu or Mongolian empresses and the children of Manchu and Mongolian consorts as their heirs. No matter how strong her clan is, Jia would never have been empress and her children would never be declared crown princes. Historically, childless Consort Ying ruled the harem for the Qianlong emperor in later life because she was a highly ranked Mongolian tribeswoman. Same reason why Ruyi was made empress over Jia and Chun despite both having children, she is from a Manchu clan. So knowing that her entire ambition is delusional from the very beginning does help to explain why she's like this now. Add to the fact that she hasn't been punished severely due to her clan's influence and she's become emboldened to push more and more for power thinking that there is no way the emperor would ever actually punish her due to her clan's influence. She has been forgiven so many times and has been rewarded that she has come to believe that she is untouchable and no longer has to simper for anyone like she did in the beginning.

    Notes:
-Meiruo, my girl! She combines Yihuan's bluntness and distaste for schemes with Ruiji's fire and spirit---the best of both worlds. That and the fact that she's coming in with a strong family background means that she's a helpful ally to Ruyi.
-On Ke and Ying's clothing: They're wearing traditional Mongolian attire, including the deel, a large garment similar to an overcoat or tunic, and an oguji, a waistcoat-like garment, over top. Normally, deels are worn with a silk or cotton sash, which is done for both fashionable and practical reasons (men will usually carry knives, snuff boxes or other tools inside theirs), but married women don't wear them (a term for a married woman is 'busuguei', meaning 'person not wearing a sash', for this reason). I believe the hats they're wearing are boli hats, which were introduced to China during the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty, and evolved into the damao hat later on. They were wide-brimmed to protect the wearer's face from the sun; strips of cloth and jewels were commonly added on. Finally, the headdress Ying is wearing in the beginning is a tolgoin boolt, an elaborate ceremonial headdress shaped like a cow's horns, made of silver and studded with gemstones. It seems to be somewhat similar to the lingbatou that the Manchu women wear, oddly enough.
-I always attributed Jia's dwindling braincells to Zhenshu's deportation, combined with overconfidence and the blow to her psyche that was the Yu prince's punishment, supported by the whole 'you can't punish me, I'm from the Yu Clan' thing. Looking back, she did become a lot more sloppy and a lot more involved in her own schemes all of a sudden. I think the writers realized that they needed her out of the way so Ling could take center stage, but couldn''t find a good way of doing so, which is a shame considering the otherwise stellar writing.
-The woman who blows Jia in is the Duchess of Xianqin, the Emperor's aunt. She's fairly high-ranked, being married to the Yongzheng Emperor's brother, so the fact that she's disturbed by how much stuff Jia is gifting her is telling. According to the subs, she's given huangyu (yellow topaz) from the Yu clan territories, and what is translated as 'rainbow satin', although I cannot verify what exactly that is.
-Yongcheng, although seeming smarter than his mother at times, is really stupid for showing off his horse-taming skills, in front of his ever-suspicious father, after his involvement in the Mulan Ranch incident. The cherry on top is Jia realizing that the Emperor is becoming suspicious and immediately telling him to get away from the horse, which makes the both of them seem even more suspicious. Bravo, guys.
-The Emperor is (for lack of a better word) such a manwhore. Literally dozens of women and he's never satisfied with any of them. And he's so easily distracted too---the entire point of this trip was to bond with the Mongolian consorts, yet Yanwan shows up and sings a song and immediately he wants her in the hot tub with him. Honestly suprised one of the other women hasn't just dangled a shiny object in front of him to get his attention. ("How is the new consort so favored? The Emperor is smitten with her!" "Well, she has a ton of jewelry, and His Majesty is part magpie....")

Jia's behaviour is inexplicable. Suggesting that the fourth son should be adopted by the Late Empress was particularly dumb. I am not sure I buy the rationale for all of her desperate scheming: that she is so intent on impressing the man she actually loves, she takes these incredibly high risk chances. Yu is the only one who understands the depth of the emperor's paranoia.

She is neither Manchu or Mongol and based on how Zhen Huan sneered at her when she tried to show off during that monk fiasco, she absolutely had 0% chance of being Empress. It was always either Chun or Ruyi.
I also imagine how different and happy she would be if she had just become the Queen Consort of King Yu of her clan. That’s what she really wanted anyway. Too bad that wasn’t possible either because of a spoiler we will find out in later episodes.

When she is dying she even regrets this life and earlier she cries about being so far from home. It makes her understandable with how ruthless she became if she is the only one she can rely on. Just like Consort Ying, Hengchuo, Jingse. and countless other women. We haven’t even gotten to Rong.

    @AshleyG24601fan Před rokem +3

    Bit of an essay ahead:
I have to disagree about Jia. She's desperate because she's alone and struggling. Zhenshu is gone. She lost her baby. Her clan leader got in trouble--and we've seen how irrational she gets about him. The people she used to scheme with are all gone, thanks to her. All that's left are her victims, all of whom hate her, especially the Empress. She's completely alone (other than her kids), so of course she's desperate and scared.
Plus she's paranoid about her schemes getting discovered since they're so tied to her now, unlike before when her schemes went through other people. Not to mention that she's used to getting away with stuff, so that combined with everything else leads her to risk it. Smart people often get cocky after a while. I know it's annoying to watch but it happens in real life too. When you're used to being smarter than everyone it becomes hard to notice your own flaws and poor thinking. It builds up: she does one dumb thing, panics, decides she needs to keep herself safe and does another stupid thing to protect herself in case the other thing is discovered, panics, etc.
Plus, the original people she plotted with were easy to manipulate. Jia could easily trick them into doing her dirty work for her. With the present harem, it's harder since they all hate her and none would trust anything she says. So I find it easy to understand where she's coming from. I get that it's hard to notice since we aren't really watching from her perspective, but she's her own character focusing on her own circumstances. From her perspective, she only has herself to rely on now.
Also, even Yuhu said she wouldn't have noticed anything strange with Jia if one of the women who received bribes hadn't shown up and mentioned it. So honestly Jia just got unlucky that one person had a conscience. After all, she gifted stuff probably to dozens of people and only one told on her. She almost got away with it.
...oh, and the almost-murder, son-shows-up-to-save-the-day plan was dumb as hell, not defending her on that one. Just plain stupid.

As a Westerner, it seems difficult for me to believe in another life, even if I force myself to do so, it seems quite pathetic and unfortunate that the only consolation for these poor concubines is the eventual possibility of living better in a supposed "next life" but not in this one.. .. hence I share that the biggest villain of this drams is the emperor, he is the only one who has control, the other concubines can only play with the cards they were dealt in this life and wait for the next one to be better, which is horrible

But I consider the loss of favor to be when Yonghuang and Yongzhang did not properly mourn for Xiaoxian Empress since before then, Chun Guifei still had some sort of chance to remain in favor even with the suspicion cast upon her.

I dont think Jia is being written as dumb so much as supremely arrogant, and then later crazy. Her schemes worked so well for so long even when her later pretty dumb ideas come back to bite her in the butt, she brushes it off as a " minor setback" and she'll be back in the schemey saddle in a week which does happen for awhile and she feels untouchable then she gets sloppy and doesnt give anything the thought she should before acting. Getting her in more and more trouble and by then shes lost the ability to think criticality for a minutwe and say "gee i probably shouldnt encourage my son to bribe officials since thats just something that pisses off emperors since time immemorial" which is stupid and dumb and would of course get her in trouble but because of the teflon coating thst is all in her head she thinks its worth the gamble. and then kinda just goes crazy after a while going on about how its Ruyi's fault when she is punished. After that it becomes a mad woman's vendetta to knock Ruyi down
I think the first time i thought " well Jia is the next one to board the crazy train" was when she was mad when 12th prince was born and was all like i knew it you were hiding something how dare you not make it easy to hurt you empress!

And she'd still have to contend with Hailan's and Yuyan's schemes against her and Yonghuang.

A little more context on this [10:30] scene
Ling Yunche's eyes met hers, he did not avoid them "The day I was punished and sent to the Mulan hunting grounds, I fell into someone’s trap because I was not vigilant enough. It is only thanks to the Emperor not abandoning me completely that I was able to return and serve at his side once more. I will definitely serve the emperor and the Empress with everything I have, even my life."
As RuYi listened to his fervent proclamations of innocence, and his pledge of loyalty, her heart settled. “If you can manage to protect yourself, then you can be useful to me. It’s not a matter of how loyal you are. You must protect yourself first.”
YunChe’s heart began to heat, heaving like the tides. He couldn’t look away. RuYi’s lashes lowered like the wings of a crow, casting circular shadows. She lowered her head and concentrated on peeling her orange, avoiding his gaze.
It was so silent it felt like time itself had stopped. The leaves and branches outside reflected the light of the autumn sun. Her sleeve rose and fell softly, swaying in the light gold rays.
It was so hard to meet with her. Even though she often appeared in his sight like YanWan did, he could only see her from afar. Could only occasionally bow his head to her. But to be in front of her. To be so close to her. To quietly listen to her speak.
His mouth was feverish. As if he were watching his own body from afar, he heard the words fall out: “Whatever lives displease the Empress, I can remove them for her. Whatever lives the Empress cares about, I will do everything to protect.”
RuYi raised her head and looked at him. Her eyes were as cold as frost and snow, without any warmth. “You should know by now what to say and what not to say. Guarding your tongue is the same as guarding your life.” She paused. “When SuoXin entered the palace last she mentioned to me that you and MaoQian do not seem to share the closeness a husband and wife should.”
Ling Yunche was taken aback, as if he’d been doused in snow, cooling his burning heart. He had no choice but to say frankly; "I have been busy guarding the palace. I have been neglecting her a bit, making her complain."
RuYi fixed her eyes on him. “Your rank and your future prospects are of obvious importance. But the marriage granted to you by the Emperor cannot be neglected. I think you understand my meaning.” With that, she went back to ignoring him. Looking down in silence as if her were not there.

  • @rodrigosalguerorivera6355

Yes! I think like you 100% about Jia, it always bothered me that they had to make her seem "less smart" in order to advance the plot and precipitate her downfall. I think they just wanted to move to a "second half" of the drama with Consort Ling as the main antagonist so they had to deal with the character of Jia (she being the main antagonist of Ruyi that was still left from the first half) but in the process they gave us a not entirely satisfactory result.
In that sense, I think it could have been a plot directly against Jia (and not some obvious mistakes that she made) related to ministers speaking to well of the fourth prince (similar to the fall from grace shown to us of the previous third prince and that was hinted as a scheme of the empress dowger) and the people who could have brought Jia down would be Ling (she has already shown to be cunning in her plans, they have a bad past and she would be the new antagonist once Jia is gone) and Hailan (also very cunning, with great determination and willing to do anything for Ruyi) could be one of those occasions when they "work together" without knowing it, thus giving the expected outcome to Jia's character without having to sacrifice her essence.
I love consort Ying but I will miss Shu so much :(
I also think that Ling Yunche only made his already complicated marriage worse with his attitude...
    Good job as always!

EXACTLY right about Hailan and/Yanwan. Yanwan especially has a totally understandable burning hatred for Jia, and yet they decided to pivot her towards being angry at RuYi for some reason. It would have been so much more satisfying to see her taken down rather than fall apart

Jia is indeed a smart lady but, I think Zhenshu is the one who makes details and refines any of Jia's plans (since Jia didnt really knew to keep her mouth shut, for example when she ranted on how Qianlong choose Mei as a concubine while his is still mourning of Yongzheng's death in front of the harem members and she let late concubine Yi knew that she is pregnant and said that Yi needs to stop her whining over her dead baby, and Zhenshu makes an excuse to get tf off Yi's palace) 👀
Since Zhenshu being sent off to Joseon and Lixin is just a buttmonkey, Jia is probably got stress out by many things and most likely miss one or two things on her scheming 😂 (after all, two brains is better than one 🤣🤣🤣)

5:30-6:40 yeah, I agree that they should have just developed Ruyi’s character to be more into scheming and then perhaps, she may have eventually caught on to Jia. I wanna give the writers the benefit of the doubt and say that Jia overtime just got more cocky, delusional, paranoid, and desperate (for one of her sons to be crown prince).
