How are you now
I started racing in 1996. Back then the motors were all brushed. every racer had their own secret formula for breaking in their motors. Your method as you can tell from your test of water dipped vs. non-water dipped shows how much/little it helps. Every little bit helps. As we used to say; "It does not cost a lot to go fast. But it costs a Heck of a lot to go a little faster."
Oh and you want to use the cheapest brake cleaner you can find. If it's too good it will have enough strength to melt the laquer on the motor windings. That not good for motor. (Use Cookie Monster voice on last sentence)
This works really good. It makes the motors last a lot longer and keeps the brushes cooler
Great video. I would never have thought this was "safe" , but then again I'm new to the hobby!! Thanks for sharing. Bring back Tec Tuesday !!!
Man, thanks for the video! I just had to buy a new motor for my son's prerunner, and now I know how to break it in!!! Glad I subscribed! I had Traxxas as a kid ( I'm 48 now!) And it's so awesome that they are still killing it, and now my son has one!!!! I HAD to get two Prerunners, one for him, and one for me! Lol!
This is how to keep your motor clean as well! Cleans out the dirt and other debris! Just make sure you oil it afterwards! Excellent video mark! Not many people know this trick! 👍👍🤙👽😎🤪 Crc Electrical cleaning spray helps out too!
Nice video. Just learned learned this trick a month ago and broke in a PN motor for the mini z. Definitely helped with the drag.
DUDE this couldn’t have come at a better time. Building a XL5 Slash with spare parts and need to buy a Titan motor. I had no idea hot to break in a brushed motor and this helps a TON.
Don’t actually do this, it does nothing except possible short in water, think about it lol
Hater alert
I have a video that proves a gain. The method is real. Whether i am doing it the best way or not is the question... hahaha
@@MarkSantaMaria you should try breaking in your next motor in astroglide
@@Rckid28 you think about it dc urgent is fine under watter yes u could do this dry you could not do it at all but a break in has made big difference on my motors
Great stuff Mark, I learn something new all the time!
Appreciate the info here, thanks! First time seeing a video from this channel, just gotta say, I wouldn't mess with your format at all; it's hilarious and educational both at a good pace.
Dude thats an awesome trick using the steering for the throttle! I usually add a piece of tape to the trigger!
Never knew there was a break in for electric motors. Replaced my sons LaTrax Teton motor and fried it after 3 batteries.
I will be trying this now
Can't wait to try it
I have heard of it and have done it back in the early 90's also back then you could remove the brushes and springs. You could buy stiffer springs and we would cut part of the brushes and that would advance the timing. I used RORA spec motors back then. They were 24T. I did find cutting the brushes did help make the motor faster. Great video
you mean cut the end of the brush on the leading or trailing edge
Hey Mark! That was interesting on breaking in the motor I have never done that for mine but I'm going to try this next time I update or replace one on my Slashes!🤔😉👍
Lots of people asking why do this. Short answer is that this method gives a better contact patch between the commutator and brushes. Bigger contact patch in theory has less resistance which in theory gives more power. Water adds friction to help the break in go faster. You could do it without water but then the heat build up will damage the magnets and possibly cause more arc-ing between the brushes and the commutator.
And yes this more of a ‘racer’ thing because Traxxas titan 550s are not rebuildable and by wearing the brushes you are shortening the life of the motor slightly. The upside is that the motors aren’t expensive to replace.
Haters gonna hate, no matter what! Keep doing you. They are still tunning in. Awesome info as always!
💯💯💯
Just an FYI to all the new friend to this hobby. Take these videos for what they are. A revenue stream for the content creator. At the end of the day, they dont care if you destroy your shit. Per Traxxas directly.
DO NOT water break-in your brushed motor! This is a method leftover from the racing days of old. Hard brush compounds paired with a brush that was not pre-cut like so many are now made this method a way of seating the brushes, "breaking in" the motor. Our motors do not need this, in fact, it causes more harm than good.
Back in the day I just used comm drops. I used to use Go Go Juice by Fantom. The main idea is to get the brushes to have maximum contact to the commutator for the most efficient current transfer. Put a couple of drop in before the race and you get some good power off the line and for the first 2 min of the race, especially in the matched cell NiCad days.
Good old days lol
Lol u are the one who really got me wanting to race my rc truggy and I started the hobby when I was 7 but the first real rc I got was a traxxas stampede and i never tried water break in and the motors I ran always went out btw it was the same motors that were in the vid
I did similar break-ins back in the early 90s.. but used Mineral oil.. along with a tiny fan blade or prop a test bench using a mechanical speed controller with the resistor... 1/2 throttle for 2 batteries.. was our normal "break-in" for "aftermarket RACE motors" haha
I never found the no-load method as effective. Either way, so glad not to be dealing with brushes, springs, cutting comms, cutting brushes, comm oi, etc!
Awesome content, totally unaware of need to break in an Brushed motor. As per normal we learn from MSM💪👍🤓
The need to break in a motor brushed is to seat, or allow the brushes to conform to the shape of the surface, the brushes to the armature.
Commutator (comm) not armature. The armature is what the wires are wrapped around 👍
I was big into brushed motors back in day had tons an raced with them all the time an what we did was just put bearing oil in engine an run it at high speed an drop oil in it slowly an would break it in pretty good
love the content mark!!!! thank you so much!!!
Just watched great idea 💡 thanks from Canada 🇨🇦
Love tech Tuesday! Wanna get this oil set for Christmas
Lol
@@christiansrcs7789 what is funny about this? I really do love tech tuesday
The oil set is awesome!
@@MarkSantaMaria im gonna use it for ass oil lube
Good information.little motors look fast.
Thanks for the awesome video. I am about to put a Traxxas brushed motor in my Ecx Brutus. Someone told me it will give the monster truck some more push.
Thanx for the video Mark
Great Learning video!!
Back in my 12th scale days, with brushed motors, I'd use ice in water, with an adjustable power supply with an amp meter, watching the amps to drop. Then I'd flush it with WD40 to remove the moisture.
Wow, that’s new to me, never heard of this
Basically what I’m saying I’d do it again with another brand brushed motor you can really show the benefits of your technique bro.
The new shock oil🤩
Great information. And yes this is the rite way .
Havent seen this done in a while last time I saw someone do this was rcsparks in a video I watched like 6 years ago.
awesome job great video
Thanks very helpful!
I would love to see you start drifting
I thought it was well done don’t be so hard on yourself!!!👍🏻 I heard of this from a fellow racer so I searched CZcams got your video!! Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
Good job 👍👍
Need to find some old comm drops they make a big difference in theses motors
Cool video as always..
Awesome video my friend.
Hey Mark, thanks for doing this! Now, when people doubt me, I can just tell them to check out this vid 👍. Btw, 2 minutes tops for the break-in. That cloudiness you're seeing is the brushes wearing away into nothingness, lol (you just need to seat them against the commutator). A properly broken in motor runs stronger, is more efficient, and lasts longer (despite what any 'experts' will tell you 🙄).
Further to this, the water acts as a conductor reducing the arcing and pitting caused by current passing from the brush to the commutator. The motor also stays cooler and water cleans the motor. As a result, the brush makes better contact so, it runs more efficiently and lasts longer.
👏👏 sometimes they won't believe it until they try it for themselves!
@@jerryvolpini7987 why use these? I usually throw them in the trash out of the box and put a velineon
@@kenmastersmaster Not everyone can afford a brushless setup right away.
@@jerryvolpini7987 if you can afford a traxxas you can afford a brushless
Cool stuff.👍
I like the bat safe in the background. Im curious how your options is of it. Because i had a lipo fire a couple weeks ago. Good video!
Hi mark just a suggestion you should be using distilled water for water stoning the brushes on brush motors mate.
You should do a review of the traxxas summit!!
Nice video
Holy cow I want that oil caddy!
can you do this after running your car a few times?mine is so dirty so I think this could help
What kind of lipos are you running on your shock oil stand? And did you upgrade the bearings in it lol?
Everyone knows water and electricity don't mix.
I can't believe the motor doesn't explode or short out in the water. That is really cool. Makes sense...
Not enough voltage there to do any harm. And all brushed motors are water safe. At least the ones you find in toys and rc cars. I've been dipping them in water since I was a kid. Not for this purpose tho.
@@LeBlanc10 just curious, what purpose then?🥸🥸🤔🤔
Dc current its ok in water
@@bigandcoolrcschool294 I grew up on an island near the ocean and rivers so I would make boats as a kid. But I did not have any of the knowledge or resources that I do now so I would just put a prop on any available motor and slap it on the bottom of whatever I felt like .
@@MarkSantaMaria ok good to know, because one day I want an rc boat. Thnx fir another great video...
Used to do the same thing with tamiya 540 motors as they were required for tcs races back in the day. 30 min forward at 4.8v, 20 min reverse at 4.8v, then 1-1 1/2 hrs forward at 6-7v. In the end it would make a huge torque differences and peak rpm raised by 2-3k rpm.
Wtf! And you had brushes left, lol? If so, good for what, a race or two? 😜
@@jerryvolpini7987 actually the brushes in the marabuchi 540 motors are extremely hard. That is what it took to get the brushes fully seated on the comm.
They brushes feel like there built out of cement lok
Great vid. Just FYI. Some brake cleaner with dissolve plastic so be careful on which you use. I know some brake cleaners won't eat plastic as well. I personally use electric contact cleaner made for motors and comms and electric parts. CRC QD electronic cleaner is what I use.
same.. brk clnr. can get nasty.
I've seen quite a few people do this, and I'm curious as to #1, what exactly is the purpose to water break in a motor, and #2, is it necessary for better performance? I run crawlers, (primarily Axial. Sorry Mark! 😂 I do have a trx4 bronco that I absolutely love though!) And am curious as to whether or not this will give me a little more power/torque? Nice video my friend and personally I think that's a very good method!
Who cares about haters and what they say fr your channel is great do u man keep making the amazing videos
Do I have to do this if I buy a ready to run slash?
This works because of commutator film formation. The most important factor for the film to develop is humidity.
I have the bandit xl5 12t speed record. 47.5mph. I’ve done everything you can imagine to get speed out that motor. The 12t Titans are what they are and if you call traxxas they come broken in already. I get 1-2 passes and it’s fried with that kind of gearing and 2s lipo
Bandit Ran 67mph on dual motor 12t motors
Do you apply break cleaner to the inside or outside of the motor?
not related to this video but i remember you saying you have a revo 3.3 converted to brushless. do you have a video of your setup? i couldn't find one. i'm converting my revo 3.3 to brushless using the tekno conversion kit.
Do you do this with all motors?
Do Traxxas TXs not have a throttle trim??
I live in Arizona where it never Rains so no worries about getting mines broken in 😁😂
Wait, is this necessary for new brushed motors?
I know this is an older video, but its worth a shot...I have a 1 week old Titan 12t that I installed in my Bandit. Running with a Traxxas 2s lipo. Adult operated. Occasional weekend user in my yard and on the street. One afternoon after about 5 min of running the Bandit started slowing down and I saw little sparks coming from inside the motor when I throttled and slight hint of ozone in the air too. Unplugged everything. Let it sit for a day. Checked the ESC, running in Sport mode, fresh battery and same thing. Only about >50% power from the motor, and little sparks and a metallic smell. What's happening (happened)?
Instead of waiting for a response, I decided to do your "water break-in" after watching someone else do the same thing calling it cleaning/maintenance of the Titan motors. The water turned black after a few seconds of running. So much debris and dirt in the water afterwards.
Are you able to clean a motor this way? I’ve been watching your channel quite a bit since I started racing but I run my slash on carpet and I can see my motor is getting nasty and my times are going down I wasn’t sure if it was safe to do something like this on a used motor I got contact cleaner duster and 3 in 1 oil to clean it but want to make sure I do it right
So you would only break in a brushed motor if the brush head is flat right and not seated to the com? Because I just checked my Tamiya Super sport motors rz, tz and bz brand new out of the box and the brushes are all already seated.
Your a beast, tell your viewer's. "don't like my shit, bye Felicia " hahahahaha
YesSiRr!!😎👊👌👍🔥💯! CheeRz brO!! It's jst de way de cOOkie cRumbles!!😁😉👌👊🤙🔥💯!!
i use to do that to my carpet oval motors chris
Trying to figure out the advantages of doing this 🤔
1. Biggest one I see is break-in particles instead of staying stuck to magnets come out in the water.
2. Stays cool in water while breaking in
Anything else I’m missing??? I’ll have to try this. 🥳
You can set the throttle trim for the motor to run without pulling the trigger
Very new to R/C. Just bought a new car. Do I need to take out motor and do this to the motor?
Water break-in is to keep the brushes from burning or scarring the commutator during seat in time.. (5-7 min.)
I don't use brake clnr. cuz it has too much residue I use contact (electric) clnr. like CRC and use oilite bushing lube for that 12t. very litle
dont want to get the comm wet.
Damn! Lemme have that carousel!! You keep the oils....
Right!!!
would using this method on an older and used motor still work? or does it need to be new?
Can i just use tap water, or did it have to be destilled?
whose sector 9 board is behind you.
Great content as always. Great RC tip. I have the luxury of a break in feature to a motor dyno I still have to do the small voltage but always use the water cup as you demonstrated.
Carbon plus water makes acetylene gas. Although motor break in probably doesn’t produce enough carbon dust to do that. That’s how they powered miners lights
I have a question can you do that to a normal Traxxas motor yes or no water breaking in
what do you mean by normal Traxxas motor? there are brushed motors and brushless motors, he just did it with a brushed motor.
I just bought la trax Teton model , what do you recommend for breaking in the motor when you just starting out in rc hobby ? I don’t want to do full throttle right off the bat ..
Did you get your question answered on how to break in a latrax motor ??
If I buy a rtr like wltoys 1xxxx3x389
Do I need to do this?
I understand setting the brushes but why under water?
I would guess it cleans the surfaces and they wear in so you get a smooth clean surfaces.
also keeps the motor cooler while running
Does this work for wltoys 144001?
Ever heard of throttle trim?
Do you have to do this?
You also need to do this to clean a brushed motor.
MARK!
LETS GOOOOO
Traxxas actually doesn't recommend water break in. Not sure why but that's what it says in the owners manual
What oil name???
Start a drift series
How can I get my hands on one of those Traxxas pit mats? 👏👍
On traxxas!!?
First on backorder 2nd they are looking for another manufacturer from last i heard from rep.
i got a rc car that was already built but whats a good first car to build for racing electric anyone? i feel like thats only way ima learn how to build is try it
nice video man but what happens when you do this and why?
I think he said it makes it faster, but I’m at not so sure why.
Better contact of the brushes and the comutator and using the water keeps the surfaces cool and flushes out the cuttings as it smoothes the surfaces.
@@payscue189 very detailed answer! I like it! Now I know what it is! 😂
Hey Mark instead of brake clean have you thought of WD-40 for getting rid of all the water. WD stands for water displacement who knows maybe its another video to see if theres a difference ? keep up the great vids
Need contactor/motor cleaner, that is why they are using brake cleaner close enough to motor cleaner it leaves no residue on the comm or the brushes. It's not to remove the water. You are wet sanding the brushes to the commutator and using the cleaner to remove the metal dust from the motor.
