Benedict gave up his big dream of being an artist, so where is Eloise asking him, why he quit art school ( cause they seemed to have great connection in Season 2 )? Why is nobody else talking about his choice?

    • @strawb2811
      @strawb2811 Před 26 dny +29

I think the time skip causes issues. Like "hey Ben remember when you quit art school 4 months ago, what was that about?" Could have been awkward? Still really disappointing they just dropped the art angle even if they pick it up again later in S3.
I'm really hoping he has a heart to heart with someone about it, any sibling really. Also I think it's odd Anthony doesn't really see what he did he's just like "good job bro, taking care of business while I was away" and Ben's not like "you ruined my life you berk". I hope there's a confrontation there (Anthony is kind of a crap brother).

I hope they will pick up this story line again with a simple question like "Do you miss doing art?" Or something like that. Cause this would be a question I would ask my brother if he would give up his life goal 😅. An opportunity missed by Colin (violet told us, Colin being the most sensitive and caring, so why not SHOW us? Would have given his character more substance), Eloise (too busy with cressida instead) and Anthony (too busy with being in love😍😅)

I am sure they will mention it eventually. He's been busy with filling in for Anthony, trying to find a purpose. Try something different for a bit. He still feels like he's not good enough, especially with finding out Anthony paid for his spot at the college. He's going to need the inspiration again. Hopefully, meeting Sophie will do that. I am hoping we see her or at least have a ball with him meeting her.

I think the new show runner this season has missed the mark a bit. Your point about the relationship of the Bridgeton family with each other being one of the main threads of the storyline, it makes this very rich family from another time much more relatable to a modern audience.
Totally agree the Cressida storyline is not necessary. She’s a baddy “mean girl” but that’s ok it’s her role.

Still watching the video but personally I wish they had saved the Mondrich storyline from this season for Benedict and Sophie’s. Their strong work ethics and sudden transition to noble-dom would’ve been a nice compliment to the class dynamic convos/tension that Sophie introduces through her relationship with Benedict. So I hear anyway - I haven’t read the books, but since they’ve changed Benedict so much I’m sure the plot/Sophie will too.
But Benedict is friendly with them already so it wouldn’t be strange for them to be involved in some way around his relationship - perhaps as a confidant for him and/or Sophie. There’s so much the writers could do with them to compliment and support a Cinderella-esque dynamic between the leading couple, and it would give more substance to the Mondrich’s own storylines too. The couples could provide mutual support to one another.
I personally believe side stories should a) progress the main plot, b) progress a future plot, and/or c) provide some meaningful thematic parallel to the main thread of the story. That’s why most people LIKE the Mondrich family this season but don’t CARE about them, and why they worked best in season 1 and struggled in 2.
They’re good characters, and bring a fresh POV to the 1% world of Bridgerton, but they’re not being used effectively. I feel bad for the actors who have to watch their characters get backlash when it could’ve totally been avoided. They’re doing a genuinely good job with what they’re given and I hope they know how wonderful they are!!

Having Francesca's season next would be pretty much impossible because of how her story in the books starts. It would also be super confusing for people who haven't read the Books, considering she's already a widow by the time we really get started with her story so i think her season will be season 5 at earliest, maybe even season 6 if they choose to show Eloise's story first. I do really hope we'll get a Francesca season though. Her Book was my second favorite after Benedicts.

The two things I got from Part 1 were that Benedict lacks a sense of purpose and that he is resistant to the idea of marriage. His resistance against marriage reminds me of how Anthony was before his season. I like how you pointed out that Benedict always seeks out relationships rather than casual hookups. Even if he is unaware of it, I do think that Benedict is searching for a long-lasting romantic relationship and maybe his relationship with Lady Tilly Arnold will help him realize that by the end of the season. Also, I’m hoping that Benedict revisits the idea of doing art again in his season because I truly think that is his purpose.

Honestly, the Bridgerton watching experience would be even more fun if we had once a week episode drops. Having a week (INSTEAD OF A MONTH) to discuss each episode be so fun, and I feel like it would also engage more casual fans in discussion too while the show is coming out. And if Netflix wanted people to stay longer, it would have people subscribed to their service longer anyways.
When Euphoria season 2 came out, it was so fun to talk to people about the episodes as it released weekly and it ended up being something like the most tweeted about show ever! Tbh most of the talking was just venting, but still I feel like the once a week episode drops fosters more social interactions and overall makes the watching the show a more enjoyable experience that sticks with you (excuse my terrible run on sentence lol). Even though Euphoria S2 after episode 2 ended up being a hate watch for my friends and I, the actual discussion of the show as it came out is still something that was really fun!
Also great video! I feel like talking to an actual writer for TV shows gave a lot of us insight we wouldn’t have had otherwise!

EXACTLY! Of course the most hardcore fans can stay active even during a two-year hiatus by discussing things in detail, doing rewatches, looking through books (if they want to look ahead at potential spoilers which I DO NOT 😂) and so on and so forth but if you really want a show to be successful you can’t just release things for the hardcore fans. Casual people who are half-watching while they fold their laundry have to also be kept on the hook of being drop-fed the story week by week.

I can see why viewers were disappointed with Ben's scenes, and I totally agree on the filler part. But I think he's supposed to be coming off as a bit lost and depressed to set him up for season 4. Which is pretty similar to Anthony and Colins set ups for their seasons.
I do think it wouldve have been more interesting to see him commenting on how losing his art/creative outlet has affected him. Even just one time.
So to me his character makes sense, kind of moody, taking an interest in the first no strings, intriguing woman he meets. But because he's not having any heart-to-hearts like he did with El in S1 it's coming across as very flat.
I'm kind of hoping something (anything!) happens with Ben in part 2, but I'm guessing he's just going to get dumped and be even more mopey???

Everything you said about the lack of Bridgerton family material and Benedict filler...I completely agree 💯
It's becoming more obvious that Shondaland getting the Bridgerton book rights was NEVER about creating a TV series about the Bridgerton family, but wanted to insert QC into the Bridgerton universe and add side characters to create drama for the sake of drama. The Bridgerton family hasn't been a priority for them.

Aside from meeting Sophie (which I expect to happen in the final episode) and maybe building up to a new breaking point for Benedict since they chose not to make use of him leaving art school, he is set up for his season. I do wonder if it was intended for him to be season 3 until it was decided to rush the Colin storyline (all they would need to do is replace Colin talking about Pen with Benedict meeting Sophie at the final ball). This leaves Benedict in the place of stalling or adding trumped up drama leading into his own season.

I am like you, what are they doing with this man in S3, I do not understand it. The actor is so bloody capable of more than what they've given him(I've seen him live on stage in 2 productions and been back and watched as many of his stage productions as I can get my hands on, I can tell you he is very good)
Are they trying to combat the misunderstanding from S1 that he is anything but a man who likes women by having him sleep his way through side characters.
I've seen some apparent spoilers for ep5&6 and right now I have no clue what they're working towards.
Quite frankly his lack of scenes with his siblings is also fustrating. I'm still relentless that he will be S4 lead because nothing else makes any sense story wise, but this feels like they needed to move up penelope and colin because otherwise people would be bored of them dancing round each other by S4, but in doing so, they didn't know what to now do with benedict. I hope something in ep7&8 might clear things up as it seems by end of ep6, we are no further forwards based on your general reaction

  • @khai_ldn1609
    @khai_ldn1609 Před 26 dny +17

For someone who strongly thinks that Benedict should be the lead for season four, the first part of the season makes it not look promising. As you said even though it’s only the first four episodes out now that I’ve seen, Anthony and Penelope were crucial throughout the previous seasons before they became leads.
Granted he has given up art school, but they have not made his character as important in any other way and his relationship with lady Tilley was underwhelming.
From your video essay (which I LOVED so much that I had to subscribe) you spoke about how his previous interests were not from the ton and were working class. Also, out of the family he’s the one who actually defends of working class. when I found out about his relationship with a widow, I thought that would probably be a deeper insight of how widows are treated in society and how she holds herself up.
As much as you hate Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury became a widow and we also saw problems when it came to her status and her nearly losing all of her wealth when her husband died. I felt like we could’ve had Benedict have a conversation with her to learn about society in the eyes of and “outsider” if they were not considering on developing his character more.
That being said, I actually do like Cressida. In the first look of S3 I was confused why Eloise would hang out with her but overtime I got over it (with the amount of interviews she’s been doing I assumed she would take in a lot of screen time this season as well). Whilst they are trying to do a character redemption ark -which doesn’t match to the book, also the past seasons and this season have shown her to be a bully, I really like the conversation she has with Eloise and I don’t mind the time that she got because she was with a B tier character (also Eloise is my favourite along with Benedict). I didn’t care about her relationship with Lord Debling but I guess it wouldn’t make sense for her to completely change her old ways immediately.
I think the main problem is both Benedict and Eloise lost things that were important to them but with Eloise while she lost her characterisation of being “radical” and she lost her friendship of Penelope, you still see her bringing her thoughts to Cressida and learning about Cressida the same way Cresida is trying to learn about Eloise and improve her character that way. (I think also because their is an ongoing rumour that Cressida might be interested in women instead I’m interested in how that will play out and whether it’s true or not I’m just interested to see what they’ll do to her chat since it’s entirely different from the books now)
Benedict lost his art and subsequently became as if he is a C- character, maybe even lower, this makes me worried for season four-lack of Benedict it feels like we’ve only seen five minutes of him and I’m unsure how they’ll build his character to make him finally meet his love.
(Also I love Benedict relationship with the Mondrichs’ but I hate the way the writers only write about friendship season and never see them interact again. They did the same thing in season two (he only went to the Mondrich bar once and never to be seen there again which always confused me because he was one of Mondrich’s first supporters))

I’m gonna try and see Ben’s story-arc in a positive light. After your summary of Benedict’s season 3 story so far, I think maybe his story is a combination of Anthony’s and Colin’s stories. In season 2 episode 1, we saw Anthony in routine, he takes care of the family-finances, questions different debutants and has sexual trysts on the side. He is in a rut. And now in season 3, I think episode 3 or 4, Colin is realizing his feelings for Penelope and talks with the other “gentlemen” in Will’s club about how pointless their pursuit for sexual pleasure is without any real love and they laugh at him. Now look Benedict. He is no longer pursuing art, he avoids other young ladies(the marriage mart) and every time he dose make a connection with another lady, it always ends up being sexual. Ben is in a bad routine, a rut. And this is just speculation, but maybe in Season 3 part 2, Ben will realize this and come to same conclusion Colin has, that he wants love, real love and maybe seeing Colin and Penelope together will inspire him to get his life together. Sort of. This is, again, just speculation. We really just have to wait and see where Benedict’s story is going on June 13th.

Here's what bothered me about the Colin brothel scene...
He had this one thing over Anthony and Benedict, that being more of a romantic -love at first sight- kind of guy, and less of a standard manwhore.
I also got bored with seeing the virgin seduces rake and makes him a good boi trope. So they didn't do that, I felt like the whole purpose of doing those scenes was that he could walk back on them and be more ... Colin.
But that's the thing, I didn't need to see him walk out on a couple of girls making out naked to know that he's different than Anthony and Benedict... We had 2 seasons where we established that.
Also, we're back to virgin x experienced man trope, which I am again bored with...
And looks like I have to wait for Fran's season for the two leads to actually both have the same level of experience... In bed.

But he could suggest to one of his siblings that he would do it in his own way (kind of like that scene in which Anthony said to Daphne that he would look for a wife but add something about him wanting to do ti outside the box hence setting up for his season) I mean something like that could still happen since we haven't seen the second part yet.

Like he's fine in season 3 but reading book 4, it just felt a lot more REAL how badly he was feeling like "OH MAN, I'M AN IDIOT, WHY DIDN'T I REALISE SOONER THAT PENELOPE IS LOVELY" 😂

i think they were trying to convey how isolating anthony's position as viscount is, how being a parental/authority figure to your siblings can affect your relationship with them, how none of them can relate to him - which is compelling.
but at times, it came across like none of them care about him at all and made them seem self-absorbed. like when eloise runs off to see theo while anthony is in the middle of a crisis like GIRL? lmao

I’m still holding out hope for Cressida in future seasons (her family could replace another one from the books), but it’s looking like she will be one of the antagonists for Polin, and being the baddie for 2 couples (3 if you include Daphne) is a little too much even for Shondaland

Charlotte is already one villainous presence on the show, I don’t need another mean girl on the show being just a general menace (ALTHOUGH if they’re going to swap her family out for another family that IS in a future story, that’s different since it wouldn’t mean taking away from a storyline that should have more attention). 😂

Cressida and Eloise’s story was my favorite of the season Part 1. I liked the chemistry between the two characters and the story arc it fostered for Eloise. So I think it fits fine as a B level story. The Mondrich storyline is the comparable to the ruby mine storyline from S2. It’s given a lot of screen time, for something that doesn’t feel even C level of connectedness to the main story. While I’ll stay open to how that pays off in Part 2, at this point, I would have like to see that time dedicated to more Bridgeton family banter, a richer arc for Benedict, or developing chemistry for the A plot.

I just finished the first half of Season 3 and I definitely agree that 8 episodes is not enough considering the cavalcade of characters that get screen time. Also agree that Cressida's subplot was unnecessary and that Benedict got a total nothing-burger. I wanted to mention that I saw Queen Charlotte's actress on Doctor Who and I loved her on the episode she was in. June cannot come soon enough.

i think that benedict being sidelined also has to do with how poorly his connection with all the other bridgertons has been developed. In season 1 we had a nice introduction for him, part of it being shown because of his closeness with eloise. in the second season we also got more of that 'cause of his also strong bond with anthony, even if it's so different from him and eloise, and in this third one from how far we've come there's.... none of that. the closer we got from that was him, gregory and hyacinth but they clearly can't fill that role so i don't understand why they couldn't show more of his bond with colin?? or give back more of his scenes with eloise?? or both of them?? (they kind of get stablished as the funny trio in s2..) they could even have him be worried or being francesca's guardian!! (that could be a parallel to anthony and daph but still refreshing by how different their characters are) like... there were more alternatives and yet they reduce him to that shitty subplot of him getting laid with anyone)):

  • @gabrielleduplessis7388

I am in the middle if the week to week thing.
I do agree waiting each week adds anticipation and excitement. I want workers to get paid what they deserve.
There is this c or k drama that I watched (and bate that I forgot the name) had more than eight to ten episodes and were able to make a compact story. Them only releasing two episodes a week at a time added to the experience.
But doing the two parter for Bridgerton hits differently. Waiting two years (minus the strike) for shows that only release 8-10 episodes where storylines get rushed sucks some of the fun oit of it.
So while I get we can’t go back to the 24 episode format due to budget and preventing adding on filler episodes, I feel the week to week format works when you have more episodes.

In my opinion, Benedict is giving me real rake vibes and honestly, I don't care for his plot with so many women that I don't really care about. I am much more entertained with Eloise. And low-k I am looking forward to her season because of that. He is a comic relief, but also a mess (which is relatable), but I hope that in the next 4 episodes, we get more deep stuff with him like finding a purpose, his outlook on love etc. I want more guidance from Violet in the sense that she really knows her children and knows what is hiding beyond their facade. So far I haven't seen anything that would give me hope for a more serious Benedict plot. Otherwise, I really like this season and I am not bored in between Polin's scenes.

Like the first 2 episodes I felt like I was in a marathon cause so much was happening yet so little? I agree that a weekly release would've been better cause at least as crammed as it is you can have like a week to process all the hundred storylines jammed into ine episode. Although more episodes would be the dream. I do like the Cressida angle, but I agree it felt like it was taking away some other parts of the story. Some things do have to give.

Wasn't expecting the production and screenwriting breakdown with Joshua Levy, so I had to take a break to mentally adjust to a more serious analysis mode - and it was great! Honestly really fascinating, and I really empathise with the need and desire for weekly releases. I watched Bridgerton for the first time this past year and because of our schedules my housemate and I insisted that Thursdays were Bridgerton Night. We waited a week between episodes to watch it together and it meant that the story had time to settle - we would theorise next moves when we sat for breakfast, our frustration with characters had time to build toward a pay-off, and we would rewatch that "week's" episode in the interim. We were able to avoid spoilers because it had been two years. My frustration with the staggered release was in knowing that most people would watch Part 1 in one go, the buzz of discourse and theories would happen in the first week, I would have to somehow blind myself for four weeks and not engage, and then Part 2 would be out and it would be over all within a month. It doesn't feel like a "season's" worth of material, the finale won't feel like a finale. I'd 100% welcome a weekly release schedule for the increased satisfaction and buzz. I clicked on this video from my Watch Later list cause I just watched episode 2 and started getting worried for Benedict's storyline but I got a quality interview to boot, which I should've expected after watching your Anyone But You videos that were so good you now have me regretting not watching it in theatres - unexpectedly delightful surprises are a theme on your channel

Thoroughly agree that a weekly model is the best idea, still maintains buzz for a full month or more (two per weekend like Kdrama is my preference) because right now I'm frustrated as hell waiting and *stewing* on the issues. I'll bet they did not write this season as a two-parter but it was enforced post-production by Netflix.
I had problems with S2, but I've now learnt to fully appreciate that even though we had that egregious Featherington plot and a lack of development for Kate, we had good relevant storylines for the Bridgerton family. The pacing and editing, and costumes might I add, has gone a bit rogue this season. By pacing, I mean we got all these side storylines established but no progression on them. Colin feels underdeveloped as a character and I was/am so ready to like him, but I'm still super into it, and especially Eloise/Penelope dynamic.
Part 2 I'm hoping for the angst and emotional turmoil, because the lust is fantastic but I need that big climax to come 😅 *and* have enough time for dwell in happiness and feel like everything is well resolved for the last episode. Probably expecting too much but I'll maintain hope!

I personally think the nothingburger of Benedict doing what he always does is intentional. The way he described his storyline this season was him continuing to do what he always does and it all coming to ahead in terms of the realization that it's not getting him anywhere.
Here's the thing. Shondaland is used to doing over 20+ eps per season. Shonda has already admitted it is a challenge. Maybe we should start an online campaign for more episodes and have your media contacts promote it.
Also the things Cressida will be doing effects what happens with both Eloise and Pen and Colin. That's why we are seeing more of her this arc. She will most likely be out after S3. I have feeling this Clara who Genevieve Chenour is playing is being geared up to be a new mean girl.

Let’s be real. There is a reason why Book 3 of Bridgerton (which is all about Benedict’s story) has been shoved back so that the subject of Book 4 (Polin’s story) can be made into Season 3 of the TV show: Book 4 is way more popular with fans of the books, while Book 3 features (without wanting to spoil things) a number of problematic themes and even gives book fans the ick.
The showrunners were never going to risk losing the show’s big audience with a faithful, chronological adaptation of the books by putting Benedict’s uncomfortable tale in front of the Polin story. As a result, Benedict is literally on hold, meaning that if they didn’t want to write him out of the show completely, they had to give him something to do for six episodes, so let’s have him pursue another unattainable, confident older woman?

I'm so glad this is an hour long, I had to take my time to properly sit down and watch but now that I finally did I can be happy someone is talking what really is up. They are really lost on how to guide Benedict's story and that Lady Tillie, I'm sorry but so far adds nothing, absolutly nothing. Maybe she is better in the 2nd part, but watching it splitted makes me wanna complain. I have seen some people complaining (again) about the side plots, but I actually thought most of the other stories were very well paced. I liked Eloise's (even if I don't appreciate the victimization of a bully without a proper addresing of the bullying no matter how miserable her life is) I can see future character growth from there, the Modriches were better than what I was expecting (I always liked them, but the thruth is seeing all of their hard work being for nothing due to a title, I thought would irritate me. But, no, I was pleased) and the queen might be super unecessary but she is needed for the whistledown plot so I'm ok with it, also Frannie is being adapted so well to screen and my boy John as well, aaaa, babies. Leaving Benedict's (lack of good) plot really the only thing I have to complain. And the lighting, but that's with the production.
