I swear in season 1, when Colin announced his engagement to Marina, Anthony looked first at Penelope to make sure she was alright. I thought he would be that older brother/father figure she needs this season. I definitely thought there would be an uptick in Penelope and Bridgerton's interactions, too bad they didn't bring Lady Danbury and Penelope's friendship to the show. great video

@user-of5xw3wx7o she had a cute interaction with Francesca, i think that had to replace the connection with Lady Danbury. Which I like bc she is a fellow wallflower more her age. But the interaction was to short and few, wished to have more interaction between Pen and the Bridgertons before the proposal. But the writers kinda ruined that by having Eloïse find out abt Wistledown already and giving them a falling out instead of E supporting her as a strong independend female writer.😅

20:24 another scene that I find really interesting is the scene in season 1 (that they took from book 2) in which Cressida is bullying Penelope in a ball. In the tv show, Colin says he is going to dance with Penelope to save her from Cressida, but in the book, it is ANTHONY that saves her. We see this scene in the book through Kate's eyes and that is an important event for Kate to see Anthony in a better light, because she likes Pen. But it was also one of my favorite scenes in book 2 because it showed how Pen is important to EVERY Bridgerton, not only Colin or Eloise.

It would have been fun to see Lady Danbury befriended Penelope and be the one giving her lessons and than be the one to introduce her to Lord Debling. Colin could have watched from a far and witnessed her change.Slowly he could start to view her as a woman. Eventually because most of her time is occupied with Lady Danbury he realizes he misses her.Wanting to get close to her he could come up with the excuse he is trying to help her rekindle her friendship with Eloise. When things eventually get serious with Lord Debling they could have had a scene like in the book where he is stalking her and than follows her to reveal the truth.
All would have been revealed and he could confess his feelings to her in the carriage.
I do like alot of the aspects of the show so I dont mind the changes.

I agree, Lady Danbury and Penelope should have had their friendship in the show. There was a scene in the first ep of season 3 with Lady D and the Queen mentioning Pen, why not set up having a "spinster" get the favor a the queen for a change. Instead of the same thing that has happened in previous seasons with the diamond.
Lady D has always been involved with helping the main couple and their romance, this season, she hasnt even talked to the main couple.

Another point in the book the show misses is that Penelope, Eloise and Francesca are a threesome BFF. Eloise and Francesca are about a year apart and the closest.
And the Sterlings are Scottish.. with full accents and very proud Scots. Her book mainly takes place there and it’s part of the storyline. I hope they won’t eff it up (they will, of course).

Less time with the Bridgertons being absolute chaos siblings, not having Felicity and less of Danburry are the show's biggest losses imo, and I think it absolutely is a symptom of(what you and I assume, probably correctly) higher ups asking for more drama bc including those would always just be more character time
Btw your point about the "I will not marry Penelope" scene IS SO GOOD I agree 100% while I do in general like how they have been doing Polin(they could have so much more obvi, the season is bloated) but that specific change was VILE. However, Luke Newton channeled such powerful down-badism I have to thank the man

You know what bugs me about this. Station 19.
That show is one of Rhime’s best because it focuses on the characters. There will always be drama, but each episode and season brings out character development.

I feel they kept the spirit of the book and added subtle things when it came to the book.
And I do agree they should have taken out some side plots and added more of the book in there.
The two storylines I longed for was the lady danbury/penelope friendship and Colin’s journals.
There were at least 4 scenes that I would have either cut down or replaced to add more development.
That being said, I love this season.

  • @kavitaiyer4074
    @kavitaiyer4074 Před 2 měsíci +43

Book Polin fan - this was by far my favorite book of the entire series. I have to say I am severely disappointed in how it has been adapted. Where do I even start?
    1. Show Penelope comes off as very bitter. In the books, as Lady Whistledown she is smart, witty, acerbic but never unnecessarily cruel. In the show, she goes home in anger and writes mean stuff with an aha! take that energy which just makes her unlikeable.
    2. They completely effed up her and Eloise's friendship. That was one of the highlights of the book for me. And from the looks of the Part 2 teaser they are going to further decimate that friendship.
    3. Why are we being subjected to a Cressida Cowper redemption arc? Who asked for that? I do not care about her. I am not saying people can't change or can't be shades of grey but Cressida was a horrible bully and she continues to be mean to Penelope in this season while having Eloise as a friend. We are supposed to be okay with this since Cressida made a statement about how the ton pits women against each other. Lol.
    4. The relationship between Colin and Penelope is a slow burn friends-to-lover. Why could they not adapt any scenes showing the actual banter between them? In the book they have several conversations where they make each laugh and enjoy each other's company. In the books Colin doesn't kiss her once and *bam* falls in love with her. He starts seeing her in a different light, sure. But he realises that he always enjoyed her company.
    5. I hate the fact that Colin does not know she is Lady Whistledown before proposing to her. The whole carriage ride scene when they fight and Penelope comes to realize that Colin is not perfect, that he is in fact insecure and can be petty and yet she loves him is beautiful. I feel like they have taken all the depth out of their characters.
On a side note, the actors playing the characters look perfect! That's the one thing they did get right.
TL;DR - Still gonna watch the show, but book Polin is way better.

Most Scottish nobles not only went to school with English nobles, the Scottish nobles "sold out" their country's independence for noble titles in Great Britain when Queen Anne (yes the same Queen from "The Favourite") put her influence on the Scottish nobles and said: sign and merge the kingdoms so that my legacy is an United Britain instead of England and Scotland drifting apart and going back to war--I will make it worth your time with money and positions, Scottish nobles.

I really wish they never revealed that Penelope was lady whistledown until her season...
I also wish that they kept the friendship being formed between her and lady Danbury. Also, for the series, I really wish that they made Lord Debling a real rival for Colin, even if it's not in a book.... So I'm starting to believe that what you said that the higher-ups got ahold of this writing material for her story.

The mirror scene is more the fans manifesting into existence. For a long time people were pissed JQ didn't wrote the actual scene, so it was source of memes and fanfiction. When the show was announced the fandom became very openly vocal about what they wanted to see.

I agree with the statement we need more time to just sit with the bridgertons. I want to see more of the family banter. Also yes, in the books whistledown is not overly mean, yet in the show, they've made her cause major scandal so I don't know how they will line up the reveal of penelope as whistledown. I thought the blackmail plot was dramatic enough, but apparently not for the bosses.
Will have to see what they actually do in part 2

Thank you as always. It is a pleasure, to listen to your analysis. You pointed out all the beautiful things from the book(s) that has missing in the show (FOR NO REASON). I get that a flashback increases costs... ok, I can live with it. But most of the things you mentioned... it was totally possible to incorporate...
FIRSTLY AND MOSTLY the bickering and the bonding between the siblings!!!!!!!! WHY????
The other thing is missed is Colin beating himself for not noticing her before and even getting angry (IN A GOOD WAY) at the fact that NO ONE cares for Pen as a "Lady" (going around unchaperoned wasn't a problem for NO ONE because simply no one would thin that she could end up in a scandal!).
I so wish that people of the Ton will react funny to their engagement (like thinking that he has done it out of pity and not because he caused a scandal and he was pissed off by the fact no one thinks that he could have a sexual interest in her)... But at this point, they changed a lot (putting Debling) that I am not sure I will get something like this.
I miss the fact that she is IN LOVE with the Love within the Bridgerton Family, and how all of them treat her very well for TWELVE YEARS. She was part of the family before marrying Colin. The only time we got this in the show was when Colin comes back in 2x02 and Anthony comes to say that he want to go for a walk with all of them and start the sentence "Family, we are going ..........." and Pen is there like Anthony considered Pen as part of the family.
I feel robbed of the scenes where Violet forces his sons to dance with Pen, and the relationship between Pen and Lady Danbury.
I feel robbed even of the dance Pen has with Simon, the fact that Anthony saved her from Cressida (and takes her home after "the scene" with Colin) and Ben saying that Pen is intelligent (in another book).
I don't miss the interaction Colin/Dafne. I think they did a good job with making it a scene of Collin/violet. Moreover in the book SEEMS that he proposes only because they make out in the carriage (out of lust but he is not still convinced it is love). It is so much better in the show because that he talks about FEELINGS before making out. But all is tarnished by LW's issue!
But as an ensemble show I really wished that in one episode we could have all the siblings in each season. I think Rege Jean Page ruined this for everybody (not hate him but he could come back for a 2 minutes scene... like at the marriages???) this prevented Phoebe to come back (if she wished) because it was to odd that Simon was never there...
I feel robbed about a Scottish in-law (after Outlander I am totally a Scottish Heritage LOVER)... I am just happy to know that Sir Phillip's actor is Scottish (he is in Outlander too) and it pains me that probably we will never hear his accent).
I loved the confrontation Pen had with Colin when she hear him saying those infamous words. It is lovely that it is told 2 times with 2 points of view. Before the show aired I hoped that they would then implement the same sense from Colin point of view and maybe, after Pen ran away, he would have said, to the bunch of Lord that he would not court her because she is a very good friend.
And this scene is narrated again in another book. It is such a pivotal scene, we can see a very strong PEN and I miss her reaction.
I still have to admit that in the show they really fixed Colin who in the book had real anger issues. I like most of the show but still knowing the source material, I think they could incorporate some very good elements (I will forever miss Portia's misunderstanding about the proposal and Felicity).
Hyacinth seems so witty, I can't wait to get to her book!
Bloomsbery part is another proof of how they took so much from Book Colin to give it to Show Benedict (I didn't read Ben's book yet but Book Ben out of his book doesn't seem interesting as in the show). Sorry I love Show Ben, no harm is intended to Ben's lovers.
Sorry for the long answer ^__-

    💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
I don’t know if words can convey the depth of how they hurt me with Colin.
From the moment I heard that they were going to turn Colin into a rake I knew that they ruined him. And ruined the entire story
    🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
(Colin had been taught, all his young life, that it was his duty as a gentleman to protect, care for, and defend the fairer sex.)
Colin declaring that he is a true gentleman in season 1. [Means]
As a gentlemen he considered himself worthy of veneration due to earn respect not handed it on a silver platter, his unearned entitlement had never warped his sense of moral conscience. He does not see women as decorative object or a prize to be won. 🥇
This is why Penelope loves him.
    ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
I honestly won’t ever forgive the writers for ruining the character.
    😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
When they took Colins, sweet innocence and naivety. They took something special from him. Because the way that Penelope loves, Colin is so innocent 😇 and pure. Having Violet do a scene saying how sensitive and different. Colin is. Doesn’t salvage the damage that they’ve done. You know what they could’ve done and said they could’ve showed us that he was this person. Instead of breaking the number one ☝️ visual media rule show and tell, don’t just tell.
    🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏
Colins desire to travel 🧳 is not to Rake across the continent 🌏having sex escapades, to fetishize it into his journal
📔 he travels for beauty for adventure architecture, culture and history because he’s a nerd 🧐 just like Penelope.
The fact is, Colin was a different character. He was set up to be a different character. (TVShow Colin) why couldn’t he be the sweet Hufflepuff🦡. Foodie 🍰who seek purpose and greater meaning with his life with intimacy?
    😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞
Imagine if he’d come back as hot, sturdy Colin but still had his puppy 🐶 energy. Had all the ladies swooning over him but he doesn’t pay any attention because he’s focused on Pen’s lessons.
Then he notices all the attention he’s getting because there’s one person who he’s not getting attention from anymore because the lessons work.
When I think 🤔 on it, a few more things bother me about the plot.
    😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔
    1. Pen doesn’t write Colin back during his travels. Why didn’t that bother him? Because if he had feelings all along (I think he did and S2 had us believing he did) then he should have been increasingly unhinged by not hearing back from her. And worried about her.
    2. This is a man who pledged to take care of her in season 2. Where is he? Instead he just goes off to be a slut in 17 cities? And doesn’t give two shits about a friend not writing him back? Just goes and fucks some more sex workers and Countesses? Let me write about it in my journals too!
    3. His apology was glib and unworthy of Penelope and their friendship. They made it about Penelope thinking she is unworthy not Colin being a drunk ass and insulting her to eligible bachelors/her chances on the marriage mart. laughing 😆with men at Penelope’s expense.
4.Colin comes back does the same whoring about the entire time he is teaching Penelope lessons (for weeks apparently) and then kisses her because he feels sorry for her. Ugh that is so gross to me.
5.Then because he is supposedly so despondent over Pen having a suitor, he goes back to fuck some sex workers again.
6.He only gets up enough courage to tell Penelope how he feels once he knows she is getting proposed to. Like he couldn’t call on her, not even once, or bribe her maid again, to see her and explain how he feels. Instead it’s poor me me me me….
I keep asking myself why I should want ShondaColin with Penelope.
She deserves sooo much better than him.
    Ugh… 😣
    🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦
The worst part is Lord Debling by comparison, a truly secure man 🧍‍♂️ who stands for his own conviction. Who is truly his own unapology self no matter. How society snares at him. And think him odd. He is who he wants to be. You can actually respect him. And admire him. For a man who stands on his own conviction. That’s truly a man.
    💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
It would’ve been just as spicy 🥵 repressed newly discovering virgins. There is such a thing as horny virgins. The excited exploration. The cute hilarious awkwardness. The wonder of a whole New World unlocked Wasted potential.
    The fanfic did it better.
First awakenings are extremely sexy. And there’s so much more special.
    🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️
if the two teens in blue Lagoon could figure it out on the deserted island. 🏝️ there’s no reason why Colin and Penelope can’t figure it out especially since Colin has the knowledge of the logistics of how it works. The friends to lover audience. Are deeply romantic we don’t want frivolous fucking. This was supposed to be our season.
We were robbed of something beautiful 😍
I specifically only wanted him to be a whore for Penelope. Only Rabbid for Penelope. I wanted her to be his first kiss and first time, especially since we were getting a secondhand proposal. now she gets no first and everything is secondhanded and a hand me down.
Because Penelope and Colin are sentimental writers ✍🏻 who document every monumental event in their life’s.
We as the romantic fan base were expecting The friends to lover❤️Trope. To be more intimate. A story where Colin and Penelope have their first awakening together. I was hoping that the show would give me an improved version of Odysseus. as Colin. I didn’t like Greek myth Odysseus. I didn’t think he deserved Penelope.
I wanted virgin demisexual Colins so bad and I was so pissed when I heard that we weren’t getting him for the TV show.
I thought he would be our first demisexual representation, but NO we got another rake.
(very original). It’s not like we got that with the past two Male leads, and we’re also getting that with the future male leads.
    🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
The disgusting mentality of a Rake an insecure man who uses women and their bodies as less so they can feel like more. Throwing money at systematically oppressed women for cheap thrills, isn’t sexy it’s not romantic. Only for his soulmate to change him. They didn’t have to make him a Rake to tell the same story of insecurity.
    🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️
I had no problem with him being a Showboat, who is charming with a false public image. Him being a virgin erotic writer. Would show that Colin has dichotomy and layers to him like Penelope who is whistledown and people think she’s more mature or older than she is.
    🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
Why keep telling the same story about a rake. Who’s raking away his problems until. The soulmate changes him. The story had so much potential and they could’ve done it better without the Rake plot. The friends to lover. Trope. Is for the deeply romantic. 🥰 it’s the innocence of love. ❤️ they alienated Colin for his fan base. When they made him into a wannabe Casanova. They could easily made him a fake Casanova who’s just lying 🤥 to fit in. That would’ve been something different. It would’ve made him more endearing and intriguing instead of another. Man Whore

There were moments while watching this video that I felt sad. I skimmed through the book back when I first watched S1. So, admittedly, I have forgotten a lot of details. Hearing you describe some of the scenes in the source material made me disappointed that those dynamics/character specifics were not fully explored in the show. But, the discussion at the end about the chaos surrounding the 🪞 emoji on social media made me perk up again! I do think it sucks that the show has been omitting certain parts that are important to the character’s journeys in the books. But, I hope as the show’s fan base continues to expand and more buzz is generated around the franchise that we can push for higher episode counts and more interaction scenes amongst members of the Bridgerton family and between the Bridgertons and key characters in the universe.

As I agree that in the show lady whistledown has been involved in more dramatic plotlines I also think that most of the times she reacted to some injustices anyway. If Colin knew that Marina was asked by Penelope to not involve Him in her Plan and that She did It anyway well aware of Penelope's feelings (She was as She tells him in second season to look at Penelope) I think he would be more understanding. As for Eloise She Was being suspected by the Queen. Pen literally saved her with that article. So yes She had a secret and It was bad anyway but in the end I think they Will realize that everything She has done wasnt so unforgivable putting It in prospective. As for the article about Colin in the season 3 part 1 that was a Little bit more vengeful for no real reason. She was just bitter and resentful. But anyway I just think It Will be linked to the plotlines about them initially don't understanding eachother's point of view in Life.

Cressida’s scenes were my favorite in S3 Part 1. I also really enjoyed Francesca’s story. It think they could have cut the Mondrich family story and made that a spin off story. It hasn’t fit well the last couple of seasons in the main show. Maybe that would have freed up some time to give the Polin story line some chemistry.

22:25 actually the scene was first written in Book 3: Benedict's story. Collin had been provoking Benedict all day for him to figure out that he was in love. Do you realize how many full length mirrors are visible in these episodes? These mirrors are everywhere. It's one of the reasons I am unable to enjoy films, I am not just focused on the actor. Colin saying he won't marry Penelope in the show was R O U G H. I've been pissed about it since it happened. I had never read the books, and it's crazy to me that they would make Colin seem like such a jerk in the show when it's obviously not remotely presented in the same context or even as the same remark as the book. The lack of a fully realized apology in season 3 has definitely made it difficult for me to feel totally comfortable with Colin, regardless of how exciting it is to see the climax of Polin generally. Honestly it keeps coming to mind for me. "How could he say that? How could he say it that way? How could he make her look bad in front of potential suitors? How can Colin actually be a kind person if he also behaves that way when left to his own devices? When is he going to actually apologize to her? How could she forgive him so easily for that? How are they ever going to fully resolve it?" That's been the running commentary in my mind as I watch this season, no matter what else is happening. I feel like if Colin's comment had happened in the show the exact same way that it did in the book, I would have just been like "Awkwaaaaard" and assumed that his brothers were able to perceive his affection for Penelope before he could- and then I would have been able to move on. But I guess that's why they changed it. I get that shows need different types of drama than books, but if they were going to make Colin behave SO terribly, they really should have done a more thorough job of providing him with a real redemption arc after that, instead of just "Forgive my callous remark. Anyway, I appreciate your friendship, you know that". Uuuugggh. Now I have less sympathy for him in potentially having to come to terms with the fact that Penelope is Lady Whistledown in the second half of S3. That one nasty comment took him down at the knees for me, and only the fact that Luke Newton is the sweetest most scrumptious little muffin with the hugest most fairytale prince-like puppy dog eyes has saved Colin's character any face with me.

I definitely prefer show Colin. Book Colin was weirdly violent and lacked the self control to really listen to what Pen wanted much of the time. His aggressiveness versus Pen’s I-don’t-even-need-him-to-love-me-fully, I’m-just-happy-for-any-attention-ness was really sad. Pen was mostly passive. And Colin, like every love interest in this series, was angry because he just wouldn’t express his feelings. Boo.
Show Colin is a bit dense, but at least he’s gentle. I’m not afraid of him “bruising” Pen’s arm or thinking he’ll kill her in anger. Dafuq?

I read the book 4 times, and I do not see a toxic abusive Colin.
In the first three books he is always charming and funny, but he is a human being, isn't he allowed to be angry (because he is a man)?
First of all, he was angry because she was alone in a dangerous area. And finding out she was LW he was angry, because he was afraid she would be ruined and shunned.
He was angry because he deeply cared for her, and wanted her to be safe.
Yes, he was grumpy and jealous at times, because she had an (anonymus) career, and he was still trying to find his purpose.
And no, he didn't have to grab her this hard.
But that was only one time, and I don't see any scene in the book, where I would have been afraid he might kill her.
I am not excusing any kind of hateful abusive behavior, but men AND women are only human, we make mistakes, we say and do, often in the spur of the moment, things we later regret.
And even the most kind and wonderful people can have moments where they lash out and are mean.
Toxic and abusive behavior for me is much worse, than someone grabbing your arm (unintentionally) hard.
Yes, we should all check our behavior at times, but there are situations where our emotions run away with us, before they can be controlled.
I would think this has already happened to most of us.

@@barbarafrings9231You are excusing abusive behavior. These are exactly the warning signs that women should look out for. Also weird that your metric for abuse is “well I never thought he’d try to kill her.” Does it have to get to that point before we label things as violent and abusive?

I think people are so obsessed with the miror emoji because they hope the scene will be in the show since it is not in the book. Other than that, you put words on every thought I had on the first part of season three. They really didn't give the leads enough to work with; it's a shame considering the crazy chemistry between Nicola and Luke.

This made me much more upset about the show, all I wanted was to make Colin less angry and grumpy and insecure about Pen being Lady Wistledown and they decided to ruin it. In my rewatch I enjoyed certain subplots more than the leads like wtf. This was not my fav book but I loved their relationship so so much and it's not reflecting in the show. Also THANK YOU for saying what needs to be said, i agree with all of the criticism really.

Still skipped a lot of scenes from other storylines. As much as I love some of the other new characters I miss exactly what you point out; she is cherished more by the Bridgerton and that is why they eventually get over her being Whistledown. And I do not like the way they made her meaner than Penelope aka Whistledown is in the books.

bridgerton family dynamics and lady danbury penelope interactions were lacking. This season is precious to me and i will always love it. But they could have done better with writing. I dont mind other plots about lady whistledown or experienced Colin as much as i care the lack of deep relationship dynamics.

As a book Polin fan watching one episode per week... I'm half and half. The actors are serving the best they can with the material they have been given but from what I've seen... it's not giving. And the fact that the Lady Danbury/ Penelope connection is SEVERELY LACKING in the show is very much making me disappointed.

I just want the same ending for Collin and Penelope in the show. That is the same as the book.
I also wanted to say that you're talented. I dont think anyone puts the effort in what you are reviewing. I've heard you say that you had up to 6 screening. Does that mean they send out the last two.

I hope I am not giving you a spoiler with my comment, but if I do I apologize beforehand. I am a big Penelope and Collin book fan, and I am dissatisfied with how season 3 is playing out. This season does not justice to the book, at all! And to top it all they keep eliminating certain things of Bridgerton siblings character that should be constant. Hyacinth’s personality is that of a continuation of some of her siblings like Eloise annoying know it all attitude. But she is also playful like Collin, and very intuitive and business like as Antony, etc… but what hurst the most is that there are rumors about Micheal, Fran’s second marriage prospect is to be a girl. I have nothing against including the LGBT community on the show but I hate that to please everybody that are deviating far too long from the original source materias.

    • @elisa4620

I don't think that Fran's second love being female is an issue. Because it doesn't change the heart of the the themes of her story (grief, guilt, can she be happy without being a mother?).
BUT having Fran experience love at first sight when meeting Mich was outrageous because it ruins what they had been building and standing for with Frohn.
There was also one person having an actual and objectively good argument about the change of gender : in her book Fran was the only experienced female lead and that had important consequences for the dynamics of her relationship compared to the inexperienced FL.
