Colin Bridgerton, Penelope Featherington, & The Lady Whistledown Overdramatisation (Season 3 Review)

  • Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) star in Netflix's Bridgerton season 3, following in the footsteps of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).
In this video, I discuss and speculate on the more dramatic approach to the Lady Whistledown storyline in Bridgerton season 3 (and seasons 1 and 2) compared to the source material, "Romancing Mister Bridgerton" (Bridgerton Book 4).
This is the third review of multiple videos I will be making about Bridgerton season 3!

Can we talk about them forcing FEMALE CHARACTERS TO FIGHT?! Kate and Edwina did not have a horrible emotional fight at all. Eloise and Penelope didn't fight like this either. The conflict doesn't have to always be cat fights. Let's normalize positive female relationships!!! I don't need extra manufactured drama, the stories are good on their own!!!

just realized EVERY EPISODE 4 OF BRIDGERTON IS A PROPOSAL. Season 1 E4 ends with Daphne letting everyone know her & the Duke are to be married. Season 2 E4 ends with Anthony proposing to Edwina. Season 3 E4 same thing. The proposals never are the happily ever after. The true conflict is yet to come.

Duh, of course he didn’t. The whole point of their relationship thus far is that he’s been taking her for granted in S1 and S2, and back then he used to dance with her. It’s only when he realises he actually loves her and was in danger of losing her to Lord Veggie Boy that he wants to be with with her, and having him dance with her casually would have lessened the tension between them.

I don't know how much more grappling with his feelings you want from Colin. They had so many scenes of him staring longingly at Penelope. They showed us that dream sequence. At the innovation ball you see him trying to figure out what to do and then getting blocked by Lord Debling. At first, I hated the brothel scenes, but they did show his progression. At the beginning of the season, he was trying so hard to be an Anthony like character, but, as his mom pointed out, he has always been one of her most sensitive children. He is exactly the opposite of Anthony. You see that when he's out with "the boys," and they laugh at him talking about wanting more and his feelings. I really feel like we saw his struggle of trying to fit in and then finally realizing he didn't care about society as much as he cared about Penelope. You see this when he interrupts the dance, which is scandalous and against social norms. He does this because he cares more about Penelope than he does about society and its opinions.

To be fair we have only recieved half of the show. The conversations that need to be said between Penelope and Colin still could come about in the next four episodes. Also Colin is terrible at expressing his true emotions. After their first kiss his brain 🧠 went into mind melt mode. He could barely speak with friends and family let alone the love of his life. Remember from season 2 when he call out the crooked male family member for having fraudulent diamond mines. He actually talked about rehearsing that speech all day. Words dont flow naturally to him unless he is completely comfortable with is inner circle. That is why he has adapted this charismatic charming facade that he presents to everyone outside the circle. He also lacks courage ( which we have seen thoughout the different seasons, but has been working hard this season to improve that aspect of himself)
Penelopes quick acceptance of Colin doing the bare minimum is because she understands him on a deeper level. She has been watching him for decades and knows this side of him has never been shown. Penelopes mind had blocked the idea of him falling for her but her heart never gave up ,which is why she could not give Lord Debling a 100 percent Im over him answer. So when Colin basically confess he needed and wanted her,she wasted no time in giving in to these emotions.

I respect your opinion but I have different perception.
Few minutes ago, she explicitly said she didn't believe he had feelings for her. Its a bit rush to turn around 100% to believe those sweet words easily.
If there is no Marina-Colin I might agree that Pen would have to say yes without question, similar to the book. However, the show is portraying Pen as independent perceptive logical person. How can she say yes knowingly that she is keeping a huge secret from him. She despise Marina for deceiving Colin and here she was doing the same thing. Eloise is another thing. Can she honestly believe that Eloise would just accept their engagement? She is not thinking straight. its like the writer wants so much drama that all progression she made were all thrown out the window. Just disappointed they made her character suffer so long. (Cinderella story where the girl suffers while waiting for a prince to rescue her is so outdated). She deserves better.

    • @jeananang476
      @jeananang476 Před 3 měsíci +33

@mu9173 I definitely see where you are coming from, but I feel like this season we saw a little less of Penelope’s logical side and saw her emotional side come to the forefront. In both scenes where she’s writing a Whistledown column, she’s writing it in a highly emotional state; which is why she wrote what she did about Colin and quickly regretted it when the paper came out.
Also, at heart, Penelope is a romantic. She just never showed it (I think) because 1) Eloise was anti-love and she was matching her in that way, 2) because she never really thought she had a chance at love, especially not with the one man she desired so much.
After years of unrequited love, I think it made some sense that she accepted his confession as fast as she did because maybe she thought she needed to seize the moment and have him before he changed his mind or something.
To sum this unnecessary essay up lol, Penelope has never really been logical when it came to Colin ykwim

I think the most disappointing part of Season 3 is how they've completely omitted Lady Danbury and Penelope's friendship. In the book, Lady D was her patron almost pushing Pen out of her comfort zone, and giving her the courage to be visible. And a large part of that allows Colin to recognise what a gem Pen is. In the series, they have fallen back on the old trope of the guy who rescues the girl by teaching her the ways of society, making her more appealing to other men. And he only fully realises her awesomeness when another man is vying for her attention. So it's become about men now - Bridgerton which was a series for women by women. What's even worse is Lady D continuing to pay attention to the "Perfect little Bridgertons" and completely ignoring Penelope! This one kinda broke my heart.

The buildup for Colin and Pen's relationship was actually well laid in last two seasons. This season, could have been their best writing. Both the characters had a depth to them and they have wasted it. I am still swooning, but that is to Luke and Nicola 's credit. I think you are completely on point with your assessment. They tried to deliver too much, without having delivered anything meaningful. I still believe, Polin story could have been a great exploration of art of writing and gender. • @yeahn5
    @yeahn5 Před 3 měsíci +37

Oh thank God I am not the only one who didn't enjoy it (at least so far). I found the first half so... underwhelming? Too many storylines merged into 4 episodes, while all we wanted to see was how Colin was desperate, we wanted to see his emotions, his feelings, we wanted to see him thinking! about Penelope. While in the end we just had a few glances when he was jealous, his lust when she was eating a cake and that's pretty much it? I feel like even the story with Lord Debling was implemented just to rush Colin's feelings, although I did like this turn lol.
And frankly speaking, if you ask me when did Colin understand that he's in love with Pen - I can't give you an answer because I don't know, the show didn't reeeeeally show us him questioning if he does or not and then realizing he in fact does. Therefore the carriage season just kicks you all of a sudden, if I were Pen - I wouldn't have any idea either and we got to see what she didn't see.
That being said, bless Ruth Gemmel (Violet Bridgerton) for that ball scene, her acting was absolutely incredible, how her eyes lit up when she saw Colin looking at Pen, she slayed.

    • @preciousnzeakor4018
      @preciousnzeakor4018 Před 3 měsíci +9

Sometimes we forget that Colin in the book also realized his feelings in a similar way. If not for the inner monologues in the book, it really does go from kiss to proposal. Colin isn’t even sure he is in love when he proposes. He just knows that he enjoys Pen’s company a lot and is passionate towards her. What they could do is have him have a conversation with one of his siblings where he talks about his feelings. While he did have one with his mother already, they might want to explore it in depth. I think when we will finally see Colin really come into his feelings is when he finds out Pen is Lady Whistledown because then he would choose to love her scandal and all. What I do want them to explore is Colin finding his purpose for writing and having an open and honest conversation about it with Pen, because that truly was a huge character growth point for him.

I like some parts and there's other parts I'm more critical of. For this video specifically, my main criticism I wanted to bring to the forefront is the larger pattern of corporate meddling in the artistic process than it is the actual storytelling on the show but most of the viewer response I've received in comments has been about the material of the show. YOU are here providing your positive feedback and that's completely welcome here too! 😊

To be fair, I too disagree with many here.
It wasn't that bad. But it wasn't as good as it had been hyped to be.
This season has many flaws. Among them pacing : it is so crowded with so many things happening at once, and everything is so overdramatized... We do not have time to sit with the characters and enjoy the subtle acting of the actors, we don't have as many lessons and nerdy and meaningful chitchats between the leads as we expected... And because of that it feels rushed and a bit underdeveloped.
It also felt that some subplots don't match in "vibes" but not in a good way.

Thank you. I was beginning to wonder if I was alone in liking this season so far. It is, after all, the first 4 episodes.
I find it fascinating that everyone else seems to be bothered by the added storylines presented in this season. Ironically, no one criticises Queen Charlotte's scenes. She doesn't exist in the books, yet no one admits they skip HER scenes as much as they do with the other characters.
Furthermore, let me briefly reflect why the other storylines are important.
      1) Given how Cressida plays a role in the unmasking of Lady Whistledown in the book, I have a feeling there is a plot twist in her friendship with Eloise that we don't see in the preview of the next episodes.
      2) Francesca's debut story needed to be told in this season, because it coincides with the timeline of her marriage to John.
      3) The Featherington and the Mondrichs are similar because their story explains the wealth distribution of the Regency period. A ton family needs a male heir to safeguard their wealth, otherwise it would be transferred to an unlikely relative.
      4) I'm cheering for Violet to find love again.. she deserves it. 😊

@@slkbfly0183 to be fair the Queen's scenes matter because they influence Francesca's and Penelope's (as LW) (+ they are short). What does Benedict's line add to the overarching story? The Mondrich could be removed (or greatly reduced) since their function of showing how society works is already being executed through the Featheringtons, who are especially relevant for being Pen's family. The other plotlines I agree that are fine: Cressida and Eloise are important characters for the overall story and Violet's romance isn't taking much screen time. And Francesca needs the set up.

Once again, amazing insight and analysis and you are right on the money here. Yes they are over dramatising everything, when actually there is enough drama from the relationships in the books that we don't need to add more. I'm the same, I'm pissed he didn't find out she's whistledown before he proposed, in the books he wants to marry her, scandal sheets and all. But for dramatic purposes, they need more conflict when actually the books give plenty. We watch this show because of relationships. Not just romantic ones but friendships, family. That is what I'm here for. Give me love between friends, love between family members. The little moments this season where eloise shows she still cares for penelope even though they've fallen out and she's not ready to forgive her, amazing, incredible, give me more of that!!!
Still pissed off at Benedicts lack of tangible storyline. They had such an obvious one, Benedict knows how to manage an estate (though where has that storyline gone to), Will Mondrich's son has inherited a title which will have an estate, Will while a buisness man has never managed an estate, asks his friend Bendict to help him understand it all, leading Benedict to talk more about purpose and his feelings towards having something of his own, yet also seeing another happy marriage up close and how much he wishes it for himself.
But no because apparently Luke Thompson is just too good at being charming, seducing women and rolling around in bed with them so he needs to help fulfil the seasons quota of bedroom time while they wait for other couples to reach that point. Dear god ep 7&8 better have a decent bit of story for him (I've seen full descriptions of ep5&6 because unlike you, some media should not get screeners because they can't follow simple instructions about not releasing spoilers)
I really hope you are going to do a video on what plotlines they could've done for Benedict instead of him just bedding yet another woman. We get it, Luke must have it in all contracts that he removes his clothes at some point (my god he looks good without them but still, it is excessive, almost every stage show too) but the guy can act beautifully, give him more to do than just be making out with a new lady every season.
Also worth drawing to your attention, the run time of episodes in S3 vs S2. If each episode should be 60 mins (minus a few for credits) something is a miss because take off the credits and out of 240min for 4 eps at 60mins, you've got 204min minus credits. Could easily add in 30 mins more of scenes, where have they gone because you know they filmed more than enough to fill 60min per episode. Shortest one starts credits 48 mins in. Is that worth a video and some analysis?

While I like Penelope as a character, I have trouble being invested in her love story with all the arguably terrible things she’s down as Lady Whistledown. Doesn’t help that currently I find Colin the least interesting Bridgerton. I’ve looked for analysis on Pen’s character and those she’s hurt. It helps learning that the Whistledown plot line isn’t anywhere near as intrusive in the books. The overwhelming Penelope love I’ve been seeing everywhere makes much more sense lol

True, they included a lot of subplots but they have to introduce plots to carry on for the following seasons. It wouldn’t make sense not have some type of development for the following leads. Besides, we’ve gotten a lot of Pen and Colin in seasons 1 and 2, which is why in interviews they said “ it was good that they could jump right on in”…it’s a bit crazy to say it was rushed. Saying that he’s lusting after her , as if Anthony and Simon did not do the same in the first 4 episodes of their seasons, !Only George, farmer George was the exception! Before I say anything else, I always agree with so much that you talk about so I love watching your videos - thank you ☺
I think the main issue for me in both s2 and s3 is so many side plots, and a problem with splitting it is we don’t know if some seemingly pointless ones are in fact, pointless and are taking time away from the main story, or if there is something to connect it which makes it (somewhat) worth the time taken away from Polin.
I actually quite liked the first two eps for Polin, they definitely could have done with more but in general I liked where they were at for those two with the lessons etc. However, I think they needed (and deserved) a lot more in eps 3 and 4. I think that the lessons idea could have continued further, but mainly I wish they had more scenes just talking where you could see their old selves - like when they start laughing together at the ball in ep 2 after Colin encourages her to talk to the one of the lords. I feel that was really missing in ep 3 and 4 and just replaced with Colin staring longingly at her, which didn’t feel like them as much. You could still have him struggling after the kiss, but trying to maintain the normality and comfort that he’s used to with her (like they do in the scene under the tree). It felt like they were somewhat distant for those 2 eps when they didn’t need to be if they’d allowed time for more scenes with them. That being said, while I think the romance has come at a fast pace, I think I still prefer it to s2 as at least there is hope for how their relationship can develop further at this point, whereas Kate and Anthony stayed at essentially the same point from the end of ep 3 to ep 6 (which I found *so* frustrating for an 8 episode show)
Despite not loving it, I always thought that the Whistledown reveal would be at the latter end of the season rather than the middle like the book, just for how much the show uses it as a dramatic tool. I’m expecting it to be in ep 6, as that is when the previous 2 seasons like to have their big reveal drama (ie. Daphne finding out the truth about Simon and that fallout, Edwina realising at the wedding that Anthony loves Kate), and if it is any later I will be massively disappointed in the show.
Overall I’m just feeling at a bit of a loss as it’s so hard to judge with only seeing half a season, and trying to think about if s2 had been split at the same point (and in some ways it has, with a proposal/engagement with dishonesty involved), you really can’t tell what is going to happen with just half the information
anyway, thanks for coming to my ted talk 😅

I thought I was the only one - the thing that worked so well in S1 - the getting to know each other the hand grazing the whispering in ears, the promenade walks of private conversations - I feel like it was all missing.
They jump right in on the assumption that they are good friends. But other than being amicable and Eloise's friend we really havent seen much focus on their so called good friendship.
Then Pen is not replying to him while he is away. So they would have so much to catch up on - but nothing. No discussions on the people they have become while away from each other, or the things he has experienced (such a missed oppertunity for showing us a deeper connection between the 2). I havent read the books. But i really felt like it was missing true connections.
From reviews of the books it sounds like there is a lot of inner monologue going on - bringing in the holiday journal aspect of colin, they could have had him writing about his feelings about Pen (or having him give her some of his passages to read, conveying character development, they way he views the world or maybe some raunchy stuff too) - another massive missed oppertunity to convey his changed feelings and longing for her.
I feel as tho Pen still loves colin like a child crushing on her friends older brother - I would have liked to see her fall in love with the grown up version of colin, who he has become sweet, caring but also flawed and human and her with a deeper understanding of him not a shallow infatuation of a boy whos shows her kindness and treats her like a person (Low bar stuff).
I need tention, i need conversations, i need emotional connections.
I feel as tho Men have meddled with this to the point where its not really for us anymore. As hot as the carrage scene is - what would make it hotter is the build up before hand and i felt like that was missing.
There is a reason i have watched the 1995 pride and prejudice a million times in the last nearly 30yrs. And its not for the raunchy scenes is it!
Edit- the seccond watch through was better. But maybe because my expectations were managed this time around.
I do love their match - I just wanted more of them falling in love. Hopefully the rushed start means 4 FULL episodes of passion and wedded bliss and loving each others company. I feel like they deserve so much happiness. If they fall out for too long about the whistledown thing I will be devastated.

(As a South Asian, I'll never stop being mad that Kate didn't get the treatment of Simon or Daphne from season 1. Where was the flashback?!)
And book fans generally seem to prefer Kanthony and Polin as couples over Simon/Daphe, so WHY would any writer choose to take time away from that main beloved focus? You're right, there's got to be an algorithm checklist coming from higher up, meddling as soon as season 1 became a gigantic hit. You just know someone wanted more Lady Whistledown drama because they saw some chart that said Gossip Girl was once a hit.

Being honest in the books I don't think Pen being discovered would be that bad as I don't think she wrote anything majorly bad but I haven't done all the books.
With the series you know its going to be bad when it comes out. The queen is going to ruin her. Also the colin and pen story isn't great. Think from the 4 episodes are much better.
Think Nicola played Pen beautifully. As a bigger girl I felt it in my soul... even made the husband watch it. Even though I watched it twice on the phone. Lol.
    Poor guy.
Also what I liked too is that the women colin are with aren't skinny. Curvy ladies which means it's not that big of a jump from them to his attraction to Pen.

I am surprised, at least for the Polin scenes, that I did not mind the changes to the book.
I loved their new scenes with each other, but do agree they deserve more.
I feel as for the Lady whistledown plot, they are adding subtle layers to it. She is harming herself when writing about the march making scheme. Every time Colin brings what she wrote about him, she makes sure to say that LW was wrong, aka she was wrong. We are gradually seeing her guilt on how she writes in anger and does not take a day to look over it. She also half/defends and half degrades her by saying “she is bound to report the truth and it would be suspicious if she doesn’t.
I feel these small things add some nuance to not only how she feels about what she writes, but the confrontation will.
How do I want the confrontation to play out. I did want it to be like the book, but I feel there does need to be an argument, but considering there is only four more episodes, I am worried how it is going to affect the relationship.

I also think that people say Colin feels flat because there is an imbalance between the two leads : Penelope has many plots attached to her (the Deblin one, the Colin one, the Eloise one, the LW one, the Cressida one, the family trials one) while Colin has nothing of consequences besides his romance with Penelope and a few scenes showing how toxic masculinity culture within the men of the ton pushed him to create that fake regency-frat-boy persona on to protect himself.
Even the diary scene didn't do much for him as a character because his insecurities as a writer are not shown or explored further. Someone who hasn't read the book would think he was embaraced that Pen read about his hookups.

Great review and your theory sounds highly possible that the bigwigs may have gotten involved. After watching S3 Part 1, I’ve been feeling so unsatisfied 😅 The series felt so…underwhelming. It was not robust enough to work as a standalone Part 1. I also could not understand why the characters who mattered were not getting the focus that they deserved-specifically Colin, Penelope and Lord Debling. Everything was supposed to be dramatic but oddly it all felt so muted. Nicola really sells the romance between her and Colin. I was not impressed by Luke and he really lacked the passion.

I actually think it has nothing to do with higher ups at Netflix. Except for splitting the season bit. If you watch Shonda's other shows, you will notice similar things. They start out great and then they keep adding more and more drama until it becomes unbearable. Grey's anatomy? Scandal? How to get away with murder? For her, drama works. And i hate that. Season two was successful despite the changes so they just decided to focus on that and the superficial romance. Add to that a new showrunner and i think you get an answer as to why the new season just feels different and doesn't have the same magic. Splitting the season also didn't help at all.
Edit. Didn't Shonda compare Kate riding on a horse in season 2 when she met Anthony to a hooker? I think there is some general misunderstanding of some characters from her side. Maybe that also adds up to it.

i loved part 1, but you are making so much sense with blowing whistledown out of proportion! especially with all the big reactions and the actions(or words) of the column itself. i wish they kept it as neutral element instead of an overly-antagonistic one. they make being whistledown look so evil that honestly the only solution to any whistledown related conflicts would need Penelope to abandon her work...which okay that is fine but it would look weird since the julie andrews whistledown voice is half the appeal of the show. also imo the story honestly needs the lw columns to move the story forward a lot of times.
Moreover, i felt there was a lack of genuine polin interactions just like you. i just wanna see them flirt and be lovey dovey i do not need the hater eloise subplot. tl;dr why can't everybody just get along T.T

Of the many times we hear that the books were better, its no truer than with Bridgerton. Season 1 was close to the actual story but 2 went so far off the rails that I think they are just trying to find their way back to the books. Especially hard since they switched the order from the books and that matters a lot to the overall storylines of the show. Benedicts storyline of random hookups is off, she should be further along in his own path toward his to be wife and Francesca should leading into her actual storyline, her 2nd husband. They went so far in redirecting Kanthony that you can't really go back there. They also eliminated Edwina's role that did exist after Kantany got married.
I don't know if its the corporate influence that forces more drama but that this is Shonda Rimes MO. ALL of her shows do this and they all take decent storylines and blow them up with too much soap opera hysterics. A part of me thinks the show is brining down the level of sex on the show version to make it more palatable to foreign markets and that would definitely be at Netflix's urging but the over the sideways out of nowhere redirecting of storylines and sequences is pure Shonda.

You've made your point perfectly. I think you've finally answered my question of what happened with S2. Kate and Anthony are one of my favourite couples in the book series, but S2 was painful to watch, especially eps. 4, 5 and 6. The pining was fine, but at expense of poor Edwina was unacceptable. Using the poor girl as a barrier to keep the main couple away... Ugh. Hate that decision. And I also hate that I felt the book had so much banter and quips and barbs exchanged between the main couple. I wanted that feeling in S2! I didn't get it. Just this dragging of drama and pining to an ridiculous level. The book series was always fun and light for me, S2 was the furthest from that that I could think of. I even ended up resenting characters I generally like, like Eloise.
Penelope and Colin are another favourite couple, so I was excited to get their story early, but now I'm a little afraid. (I haven't seen part 1 and won't until part 2 comes along.) Francesca's story is also a fave and now I dread the time I have to see her story maimed in the altar of rich dudes who think they know better. It's always capitalism isn't it? *sigh*

But Penelope losing weight is not what made Colin finally notice her! She lost some of the weight between books 1 & 2 and then 10 years later they get together! And the man is obsessed with the fact that she is curvy! It was completely about growing maturity and confidence…if it was about the weight loss, they would have gotten together a lot sooner than they did.

My speculation is that the higher ups were scared of push back if there was a predominantly white cast for this season, considering that Bridgerton was initially advertised as a “Regency era drama series with color blind casting.” That would explain the additions of Violet’s romantic interest and elevating the Modrich family in rank. Otherwise, the only POC representation would be Lady Danbury, Kate (although she was only briefly there) Francesca’s love interests, and the Modrich family. These characters would have been considered sidelined in comparison to the main cast and Lady Danbury would fallen into the “sage black woman” trope.

    • @LadyJenevia

One way they could've subverted that though would've been to also let Lady Danbury and Violet have scenes together, like in season 2 after the Anthony/Edwina wedding fell apart and the two of them just started cackling together? THAT WAS CUTE. It would show that Lady D isn't ONLY the lady who helps young girls trying to secure a match, she's a woman with her own life and friendships with other women. It would also reiterate that it's just a thing in the Bridgerton world that older women of all ethnicities who have already been married will work to help younger women in the ton do the same.
