  • Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) star in Netflix's Bridgerton season 3, following in the footsteps of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).
    In this video, I discuss and speculate on the factors that contribute to the reduced amount of Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) and Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) in season 3.
    This is the fourth of multiple videos I will be making about Bridgerton season 3!

      @cambryn Před 3 měsíci +16

      @@piya6929 true, but Daphne’s scenes in the books are not vital to the family dynamic/direction of the family like Anthony’s. Anthony, being the head of the family, has a much more active role in the lives of the family, vs many of the siblings can leave and their role can be filled with the dynamic not being dramatically different or out of character. Many siblings can step in to give some advice on love and life, as can Biolet (which is what they did with her and Colin this season). Agreed it would be nice to continue having those book moments and having the family stay connected- but given how short the seasons are, it makes sense that most will duck out, barring an occasional guest appearance, once their main plot is done

    Instead of giving Ben another throwaway love interest, rehashing the same QC story for the third season in a row, or bringing in Lady D’s brother to cause drama between her and Violet, they could have given us more storylines on the titular family. That’s just me though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      I agree, I do find his taste in women interesting though. The modiste makes dresses, ( Sophie has to alter dresses and is a ladies maid). The model in art school (one of his paintings in the books is of Sophie). The needy attractive lady, who I am wondering is up to something. ( she reminds me of Sophie's stepmother.) Overall yes Benedict needs something more, he already gave up on art. His character isn't doing much, I know its not his season yet. I wish we could get more from him this season, hopefully we do.

    I think the biggest issue with Will and Alice is that they're completely tangential to everything else. I'd love to see Eloise's feminist storyline continue from s2, and she could’ve met Alice there for instance, and she could've been Eloise's new friend instead of Cressida. And then Will could be more involved with Benedict/Colin, and there could’ve been something there. Bc I like the idea of them, but they're not involved enough without Simon there.

    • @thefuriousfemme
      @thefuriousfemme Před 3 měsíci +6

      We could have absolutely seen will and Alice get this news about the change in status at the end of season 2. There was enough time I. The season where the brothers were at the club to lay this foundation, and then yes! Have Eloise develop an interesting and reflective, growth orienta relation with Alice.
      Or - we could have continued to explore Alice and Will as a minor subplot which reflects some of the class issues, and serve to better inform and contextualize class and misogyny issues for the men.

    • @SuperEkkorn
      @SuperEkkorn Před 3 měsíci +1

      @thefuriousfemme exactly! Bc they actually have a healthy relationship, and now I'm afraid they're going to have them grow apart since Will wants to continue his club! Which is totally understandable, but it seems to be conflict for conflict's sake. They def could've had the news last season too. Idk, it would've been nice to see Eloise have a friend that agreed with her, and also she could've bonded with someone who's actually lived as a lower class. Sigh.

      Honestly the Bridgerton kids need friends! Let’s have them be confidantes! Let’s have Will and Alice be characters who give Bridgertons room to express their thoughts, help deepen plots, be active actors in the plots etc. plus, they are uniquely placed to be in on gossip given the club

  • @chocoshine21

    They should remove people who were not in Bridgerton books. Like why introducing all irrelevant people? Just pay more to main bridgerton family actors and keep them. Also, I got it why Kanthony were less in season 3 but thn why use them to such an extent to promote season 3 and misleading audience? Also, I agree that Polin should be the main focus for season 3 but I am upset how in season 2, Kanthony were not given much time either. Jonathan and Simone's chemistry and acting saved season 2. Like we didn't get Kate's background story as her story was as painful as Anthony's and would have strengthen why Kate & Anthony are meant to be together. They should have shown Kanthony talking about Kate's backstory in that library scene in season 2. We never got their marriage and all. They dragged and showed too much featherington in season 2 and that's why I hate that how in their own season Kanthony were sidelined especially Kate and her backstory.
    But I agree with all your points

    • @rubyanne4909
      @rubyanne4909 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I agree with cutting back on some characters. The Fetherington's even though they bring comedy, they are getting really annoying. I am hoping by next season they limit their appearance. What else can they do with the Fetherington's? The daughters are married or will be, Portia will get heir and yet get away with scamming the ton. I don't know what else they can do with that family. I can understand why they are cutting back on Kate and Anthony because it's not their story anymore. Also with Johnathan getting other roles, it might be more challenging.

    Another factor to consider is I would be amazed if Bridgerton did not do three plus year contracts for the actors going in to Season two to avoid being in the same place as they were with Season one and Rege leaving since they were already renewed through season 4. I would actually be surprised if they were even talking money with Johnny and Simone going into Season three. Johnny has said he was trying to film Bridgerton, Wicked, and Fellow Travelers at the same time. That would also be a factor in how much time he is available for Bridgerton. I also think they may have wanted to avoid pulling focus from the early stages of Polin. One thing that I have found is that a lot of times with big decisions that are controversial, there were a lot of other factors that are at play that people don't even consider.

      There are always way more variables than we as the audience are aware of. Sometimes more information comes out many years later when it's considered "safer" to start revealing things but in general, it's all very hush-hush.
      I think the main thing the audience has the power to do for a show like Bridgerton is to 1) support workers and strikes if/when they happen and 2) watch and encourage others to do the same and 3) TREND and publicly post on major social media platforms about the specific characters/stories they want to see more of.

      @@MA-xg7lt As I stated in the video: "Do things like racism, homophobia, misogyny, and so on and so forth also have a role to play in how actors are treated in the industry, what material they’re given when they’re meant to be leads of the show? Of course. I’m not making any claims about to what extent those biases may have played into the amount that Kate and Anthony’s material was prioritised in seasons 2 or 3, but I wanted to bring up the money issue because I don’t feel like I’ve seen that brought up as much, at least from the few viral tweets that end up on my feed."
      Advocating for fair wages and working conditions for people who work on Bridgerton and the larger entertainment industry is not an accusation at Shonda specifically. She is one person, and I never made any claims about how she conducts herself. Shonda moved over to Netflix after someone at ABC/Disney gave her attitude over receiving a Disneyland pass even though she got a bunch of hit shows for their network up and running, which is exactly the type of pattern of Hollywood's business practices that I addressed with what I said about Harold Perrineau where there was no care or regard for his past hits/achievements/skills/labour and he was still not given the fair treatment or working conditions he should have received.

Simone is the only south Asian on the show as a main. The only dark skinned south Asians at that. I would think they would want to use her more and promote her seaosn better then they did and make sure her story isn’t crap like they did in S2. Also if you notice with Shonda shows she tends to have a shit ton of white ppl in them more than POCs. Even scandal had a black woman lead which is a good thing but all the majority of the characters around her were white and her two man love interest where white. Bton has 3 main families we see every season Cowper, bton and feathers why were they all white? Just bc QC and Lady D are POC that’s enough? We got all these OOC characters coming in and one of them was black Lady D brother. They didn’t even introduce victor playing John

      My guess is that it is probably because they wanted many more spicy scenes.
      They pushed him so hard when his appeal was precisely that he was the opposite of that EVEN when he already tried to fit in the toxic masculinity culture of the ton.
      Let him flirt with many ladies and be charming, and engage in locker room talk with the guys (or fumble with it because he disagrees) that is enough. And in character.
      At least the brothel scenes show the shift and he is nice and respectful with the prostitutes. So these scenes, while unnecessary, are not completely useless.
      But still, it could have been shown differently.
      They could have used this time to give Colin more characterization: show him writing or doing some other hobby, show him with his siblings, showing him struggling more and more when being with his lord "friends" or flirting with young ladies, Etc.
      I was hoping for at least one scene where Pen and Colin discuss books, worldview, and feelings, emotions, hope and fear, the difficulty to fit in... They've had it in S1 and S2, why not in their own season?

    You are right about the Polin flashback. Would be important to the story see Penelope falling in love as a 12 years old,(And also adorable). Session 3 it’s about she finally growing up and becoming a butterfly so her childhood crush should be transformed in love. It’s so good when you find both in a romantic story.

Don't get me wrong, it's still cute, and Nicola and Luke N have a good friendship chemistry as actors who have worked together for all these years that makes that moment and 'friends first' energy believable but I can't help but think it would HIT DIFFERENTLY if you were actually seeing an even tinier Penelope having her hat go flying and smack tiny Colin in the face. 🤭

      I'm worried about this because they also saw fit to split the season, and that doesn't work for some shows. Bridgerton S3 has already received criticism for this split. It kills momentum and interest, especially if there are problems in the first half, and too much time passes before the second half airs. They are trying to retain subscribers by spacing out release, but letting the air out of a perfectly good tire so it runs flat is not the way to make bank on your show, Netflix!

      They just poured a $100 million into „Atlas“. Gotta start saving somewhere. 😂
      Joke aside, costume films tend to be quite costly. They can’t pull anything off a rack, even for the extras, or film just a street for an establishing shot. And they have a ton of characters, side characters, vaguely relevant characters… I’m sure budget plays it’s role in who is returning and who’s not. But most of the time it’s also contractual vs creative decision. I can’t really blame anyone for not wanting to go from protagonist to small side character. At the same time Anthony and Kate are required to stay in the series at least to some extent since they are heading the household. Everybody else can wander off to do their own thing once their storyline is told.

I don't remember all of the details but that was definitely 'a thing' for a while. Obviously Bridgerton is big enough that it's more or less presumed it will get at least a few seasons past the three season mark but it's very noticeable that a lot of Netflix originals don't have that many seasons. 👀😶

    People keep bringing up wicked but jonny was signed to bton S3 before wicked and FT. S3 was his priority and they knew that before they signed him to those movies. They had to work around his schedule. If Jonny couldn’t do it then it would be a scheduling conflict. 😂Ickes started filming months after both bton and FT. FT was done filming before bton and started after bton started. Jonny was flying back and forth between the two when the schedules started filming at the same time. Simone def didn’t have a film taking up 8 months of her time. They could had done somrhjng with Kate alone. Have her bond with the family and her friendship with lady D. I think there are couples that need to appear later on more than others. So, Kate and Anthony are essential for narrative logic, considering that they are supposed to live in the Bridgerton house, but there are other characters that move to other cities (like Daphne) or even other countries, which means they do not need to appear in at least a few seasons. To be honest, even though I love all Bridgerton characters, there are some of them that don't need to appear outside of their own season, even. Outside of that, I also think there are side characters that could get less screen time, and having more episodes per season overall. Absolutely agree with you!

    Thank you for talking about things like this in a way no one else is doing.
    I do wonder if after the Rege, he signed up for 1 season and 1 season only, outcry, they redid people's contracts to state they must appear in 1 season post their lead turn (no guarantee of number of episodes) after being renewed for not just S2 but up to S4, Luke N, Nicola, Luke T and Claudia were likely then made to sign contracts to take them up to that point at least (with the lead plus 1 season stipulation probably included).
    We know the original francesca was released from her contract to pursue a lead in another TV series, likely because she would be S6 and they still had time to allow another actress to establish the role, but they cant risk any of the rest walking prior to their turn.
    I do wonder if these now all household names, are all able to command bigger salaries in general from Bridgerton post S1 explosion, since they are in one of the biggest netflix shows, as I imagine none of them will of started on salaries that reflect the level to which they lives have changed or the notoriety from this show (case and point Luke T needing security at a stage door after his play and a line of 50+ people waiting for him) and we all know they won't have been getting residuals like you'd expect even with 82M households watching S1 in 28 days. Do we even think netfix gave them a bonus to say well done for such a successful show?
    Every agent is clamouring for their actors to have even a bit roll in Bridgerton because that on anyone's spotlight, even if its a 1 line part,immediately gets more attention. Seen it happen where an actor cast in another role, the key thing mentioned was they'd been in bridgerton, in S1 ep6 with 2 lines, but still it was the thing mentioned when cast in another show because bridgerton is a big deal and a well known show

      Yeah and Bridgerton is an interesting case study where the general masses probably won’t know the names of the Bridgerton lead actors BUT the show’s fanbase is large and passionate enough that they can and do show up in high numbers if there’s a chance of getting near any of those actors.
      And as for me doing things in a different way, I don’t think it should be “different” to advocate for fair pay and working conditions. If I or anyone else wants to claim to be passionate about this art, what is the point of my analysis on the material if I don’t care about the well-being of the people who make the art exist in the first place? We’re just coming off of the SAG/WGA strike, there’s no excuse to not keep these things in mind.

    I hear your argument and have no doubt Netflix can be stingy, but wouldn't Jonny and Simone have been contracted for S3 before S2 even came out? They already knew they were going back, so whatever they were being paid in S3 (and S4?) would be likely what they had negotiated way back in 2021/2022. And probably it's the same for the whole cast - I imagine they are all being underpaid relevant to the show's incredible success and the money Netflix is making from the show through collabs/merchandising. For Jonny and Simone, they have really blown up the last year or so, which I imagine could potentially affect their pay negotiations going forward, but I'm skeptical it was the reason their specific S3 screentime was reduced. From reading some comments of the new showrunner, it seems like the writers just had no interest in Kanthony, nor had any idea what to do with them outside of the "getting Kate pregnant" storyline. We will see what happens, although with Jonny and Simone become more booked and busy (happy for them, best to leave for better opportunities then be stuck with minimal screentime and no real effort from production into giving their characters a storyline), their pay could be a factor in their involvement if the show is renewed past S4.

    I think the superfluous plotlines should have been replaced with main cast plotlines. Like why do we need to see the Featherington baby race or the Mondrich sudden come up in society, those could have been replaced with Benedicts set up and Kate's backstory. Even better if the Feathering Ruby plot wasn't a thing in season two we could have gotten Kate's backstory then. Like I get that with breakout characters you want to give them more screen time but with such a big ensemble like the books / show there is no time for non main plotlines. They added in a lot of plot bloat that was unnecessary when they could have used those resources to tell a more in-depth story. They could go down the Queen Charlotte route if a character is so loved that they pull in number / money for Netflix. Also to the fair pay / time restraints dilemma, I completely understand that and failed to think about that when I get sucked into the romance and the story. I will say with a company like Netflix they can more than afford to pay fair wages and yet they choose not to. I think eventually that stinginess will cause the show to suffer and leave everyone in the lurch, as it is now I really don't see the show going past season 5/6 knowing Netflix. Which is really sad because I do love Hyacinth's and Gregory's unhinged books.

    I don’t mind certain characters not coming back like Daphne and the duke. Their story is complete and their characters don’t even live in the same house. Sure it would be nice e to have cameos but in 8 ep, their presence doesn’t serve the plot nor feel integral. And with a cast so big you end up wasting time pretty easily. I think it would be unfair to keep the actors around knowing they wouldn’t have a lot of screen time or pretty much anything to do. People forget this may be a show we like, but it’s a job for them, and their whole career hinges on being able to continue booking more and more jobs/gigs.
    Kate and Anthony feel a bit more necessary bc they are the viscount and viscountess and I’m sure that means they need to be around in some capacity. At the point the writers just need to get creative so that they still have a presence but they don’t take away from the main couples and the actors are able to do other jobs as well :)
    If people care about the actors like they say they do, they would realize, one hit show can only last you so long. So at some point you have to jump ship/prioritize other projects so that they can have long careers. I hate the hate Rene gets bc even tho he hasn’t had big hits since Bridgeton he has done stuff and if he wants to grow as an actor he has to do more jobs. Yall want these actors to be the equivalent of super seniors, let them graduate from this show in peace

    I loved when you talked about the fanfiction writers! In fact, I am someone who started writing Bridgerton fanfics as soon as I watched its season 2 for the first time, and read a looooot of them as well. Very often I think we do a far better (and loyal and fair) job at writing about the characters than the people actually writing them for the show, purely by love and for free (I mean, it's not my intention to offend anyone, it's just an impression I have). Of course, writing or reading fanfics is not the same as viewing the actors performing on the show, watching their performances, feeling as if you're with them in the scenarios etc., but I've realised that, frequently, I find more happiness by reading a fanfic than actually watching the show. Those issues with budget, highly ranked people meddling in the production, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and all the other problems that we know that happen, it simply makes me feel sick and feel like I don't wanna see nothing of the sort anymore. I used to love Bridgerton so much, still do (in fact, I fell in love with the show because of Kanthony), but the more a get to know about the filthy things going on behind the scenes, the more I lose my enthusiasm over getting invested on series and films. It's like politics. The more you know it, the more disgusted you get, ya know? Of course, as an artist myself (I am a writer), I feel that is unfair on my part to simply reduce the problem to "oh, I'm not going to watch anything anymore", but... I don't know... It's so revolting. So sickening. Although I understand what you said about your opinions being a mere speculation, I cannot deny myself to think that you must not be entirely wrong. Knowing people, knowing how we function as society, I know there MUST be some truth to your opinions. And it's a pity, really. Because I love this show, and I love these characters. I love, more of all, Kanthony, and I would love for them to be back as long as I can have them. But if you're right, than I don't want that to happen, I mean, for them to come back. If that's the "consequence" of my love for them, I'm not so selfish. I totally understand. But it's a shame nonetheless. I sincerely wished it was different.

I’m a book reader so I’m fully aware of how sexual some books are than others and I think their purposely left most of Kantony on the writers room floor because of the sex. Same will happen to Francesca’s season because that’s the most sexual book. I asked Indian American friend what she thought of Kate and the Sharmas and she felt it was a marketing ploy to bring over some of the existing fans Indian dramas into a Netflix produced show. Those Indian drama are far less sexual so to make this more palatable, it became more dramatic. Just a thought.

    Yeah, i was wondering why the pen and colin flashbck were only from this season. I would have thought they would have used at least season 1 and 2 scenes to show how much they were close, and with a 2nd colin pov of possible romance reliation,"oh yeah".

    The most infuriating thing about Bridgerton and all our founded frustrations with the story and pacing, IS THE VIEWERS who cannot grasp the concept that PEOPLE NEED TO BE PAID FOR THEIR WORK. Everyone supports the SAG strikes, but then they moan and groan about the separating of episodes for the benefit of payment for those working the show (writers, production team members, actors, etc). As a nurse, it's all too familiar. Those who just consume never consider the value of the worker. Ew.

      In the interview I did with Josh Levy in the Sidelining of Benedict Bridgerton video, he said on the record SEVERAL reasons why mass-dropping an entire season at once is BAD for the workers. It doesn't give the show room to build momentum with the general audience outside of the core fanbase (and keep in mind, most shows are not as well-known as Bridgerton), and the creatives can also get caught up in the red tape of their contracts where they can't take other jobs but are stuck in limbo of not knowing if/when the show will be renewed, AND ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT, we've seen so many stories come out of people getting these tiny insignificant residual checks when their projects are on a streaming platform... what goes is it for us to just watch a thing and say we love watching it if we don't show any care for the people who are working 12+ hour days for who knows how many months to make these things we "love to watch"?
      I love to watch a complete story in one sitting, I understand why some fans say they don't want to watch until the whole season is available, but if we don't all try to think about the bigger picture, these problems are just going to persist and fester.

      Although I agree with you. The way they decided to do it is not great. It would've made much more sense to realise the episodes weakly since it would still force the viewers to renew their subscription and would keep the hype by having the viewers speculate about each episode (and maybe a new promo/crumb between the episodes)

    In general, it's frustrating when people unaware of the nuances involved in a situation give loud opinions on that situation. In this case, I don't fault people -- they're not ignorant on purpose, as many are young fans and not yet aware of all that goes on behind the scenes and in development to make an incredibly collaborative artform happen, including the financial aspect, but I encourage them to find out. There's lots of entertainment biz coverage online from people well versed in these things who specialize in that kind of coverage, and lots can be gained from reading the trades, as well, like The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, etc. It's a wide, wild world out there!

    I get, 2 seasons of build-up. I am not complaining. But come on, 1 scene of them as children... that would not kill them 😅 easily could work for both 302 or 304.

    There is a reason why people like Martin Scorsese, Peter Morgan, Bradley Cooper, Tim Burton, and Shonda Rhimes have chosen to strike deals with Netflix. It's because they are known to be HANDS OFF in the creative process particularly with powerful industry creatives such as I have named. Everything you are seeing on the screen with Bridgerton comes from Shonda, Betsy Beers, Chris Van Dusen, Jess Brownell and their team. Netflix may offer their opinion on certain things (which reportedly they did on the infamous Simon/Daphne rape scene) but ultimately Shonda and Co make the creative decisions.
    What limits Netflix does impose upon them are strictly financial and procedural. ( An example of what I mean by procedural is that they require them to have a shooting draft of all 8 episodes prior to beginning filming, This is something that does not happen in network television. Writing happens on an ongoing basis) Once these limits are dropped they expect the Exec Producers to manage things themselves only visiting the set occasionally to check on the progress. This is counter to how producing a network television show such as "Lost" operates. In particular, at least one of the Exec Producers of network TV shows are Network employees and their job is to protect the interests of the network. This often includes forcing creatives to do things they aren't interested in doing. In the case of Bridgerton NONE of the Exec Producers are Netflix employees. All of them work for Shondaland and are paid by Shondaland. As long as they keep to the procedural and financial restrictions Netflix lets them do as they want. This includes trying to fit their big ideas into eight episodes.
    Consider the fact that these are romances that are being produced by a company that's responsible for shows like "How to Get Away with Murder" and "Scandal". Shows that are DRIVEN by drama. If you are expecting or want a fluffy rom com you will not find it with this show. Betsy Beers even admits in Inside Bridgerton that she thought Shonda was crazy when she approached her the first time with this material. This is largely due to the fact that none of them really understands the romance genre. I am assuming this is one of the reasons why they retain Julia Quinn as a consultant.
    As for Kate and Anthony in S3, during the first few months of the Bridgerton shooting schedule, Jonathan was in Canada playing a lead in the multipart series "Fellow Travellers". He was coming back at times to shoot scenes for Bridgerton but that's all he was able to do. Simone had her own commitments during that time as well. With Phoebe Dynevor their really was no reason to have her in the show other than the one scene in the book. Given the very limited amount of screen time she would have had the advice given Colin by Daphne could easily be given by someone else (in this case Violet).
    If you really want to blame Netflix for something, blame them for the poor promotion done in both S1 and S2 (especially S2) and the fact that we had to wait two years to see S3. Both are part of their responsibilities when it comes to Bridgerton. Blame them also for the one thing they really have done that affects the creative process...only giving them 8 episodes to work with. Had S2 had at least two more episodes they would have had time to tell the Sharma backstory and achieve all the other things that they wanted. My guess is they made the decision to show Anthony's because he was the Bridgerton.

      @@LadyJenevia Maybe not with smaller less powerful entities. I can certainly see that, but with people like Shonda I am doubting that they push too hard. Try telling Martin Scorsese that he couldn't use the experimental filming techniques he did in "The Irishman" because of the cost. Or tell Bradley Cooper he can't shoot "Maestro" in black and white because they don't like it. It's not happening.

      I would imagine it's not the same for TV and movies. For Scorsese or Cooper, it's a one and done affair with each film. And they're big names too and bring prestige to Netflix so they probably have unique experiences. With TV, I can easily imagine season 1 being left mostly alone, but as soon as it becomes a hit, all the execs with their spreadsheets and algorithms would want to meddle because they want future seasons to be bigger hits and they can smell the money.
      Not to mention streaming seems to have become less commercially viable over the years so whatever blank cheques were being issued 8 years ago probably isn't happening anymore today. They've just reinvented cable, or so it looks to me from the outside.

They really do deserve to move on to the next thing. That being said - i am hoping we dont loose pen, colin & eloise - they truely seem/feel like CORE characters. But by the end of this season I may feel like polin are fleshed out - leaving very little to work with characher wise.

    But I can picture that in part 2 with her being happy about her engagement.

    I would assume they’d have to bring Coughlan back for however many seasons they make, at least to some extent. It would then also make sense to keep bringing Newton back as well, although I guess they could go with the ironic route and have Colin be out travelling during the social season.
    I could of course be wrong, though. Slight spoiler I guess, but ”Call the Midwife” kept Vanessa Redgrave on as narrating old Jenny even though the actress playing her younger self departed fairly early.
