In Shield Hero, Keel is a character who hasn't appeared much in season 2 of the anime, but who will have some very interesting plot developments later in the series. This video contains full spoilers about all aspects of Keel in the Rising of the Shield Hero, including a major reveal that will come as a surprise to many anime only viewers, as well as how Keel develops in terms of abilities, strength and character. It also includes some spoilers for other characters including Sadeena, Raphtalia, Ratotille, Holn, Mamoru, and of course Naofumi the shield hero himself. You have been warned! This video also discusses different interpretations of the character of Keel and what I think the author's intentions were when putting in the twist about this character.

The scene when Keel's gender was revealed was really funny. Especially when Filo wound up explaining the significance of the sexes, demonstrating that, somehow, she just instinctively has a very thorough understanding of sex, how it works, and the depth of meaning to it. And the first thing Keel has to say to that is there's no way she could do that with "Bubba". Naturally, Naofumi's not exactly happy that she immediately decided he would be the hypothetical partner.

being a filolial and a candidate , filo matures faster than normal , she is fully grow already where the anime is, you can see there is little difference between filo and fitoria in most behavior stuff .
About doing with naofumi, was just she jumping the gun , because he si the village leader, so he would do stuff to everyone, specially after he prohibits romance .

A very “up to personal interpretation” for the character. I think she’s just an innocent child ignorant to the bodily functions. Of course I won’t say any more, but thanks for the shield videos. Definitely plan to read the series in the future.

You are exactly right. Her father was a fisherman, he didn't want the fact that she was a girl/woman be a hindrance for her becoming a strong fisherman when she grew up. Her father was just a bit awkward in his ways, and she's a young girl, so she misunderstood the things she said. That's how it's portrayed in the novel. She lost her parents in the first wave, gets captured and sold to slavery, tortured relentlessly. When she's finally freed, she finds Naofumi and Raphtalia and they become her role models, and while Raphtalia wants to be seen as all woman by Naofumi, combat training and war isn't exactly the most feminine things in the world. So even looking at the events from a real life perspective, it wouldn't be that far fetched to imagine her not knowing she's a boy. Her father wanted her to be strong so she could do well when she grew up, not out of malice or cause he wanted a boy, simply just to prepare her later. If she was never taught about the different sexes and such, and all the events of the attack on the village takes place before her hitting puberty, it's within the realm of possibility something like this could happen.
Anyway, always nice to hear someone planning on wanting to read the series. It's an amazing series, and anyone of loves the anime I'm pretty sure will love the novels. :-)

The only part up to "personal interpretation" is how well/badly the author handled the retcon. Keel was introduced as a male character, but there was too much overlap with another character they were planning to introduce later, so Keel's a girl now.

One thing about Keel's injury in the Spirit Tortoise arc being skipped is that it kind of fits into a broader trend of smoothing over the more "edge lord" aspects of the Shield Hero series.
For those who don't know from the LN, or manga, the Spirit Tortoise familiars can plant eggs which will hatch from the corpses of their victims, and sometimes the familiars manage to implant eggs in living victims, who, even if they survive the initial battle, will die if the eggs are given enough time to hatch, and this second scenario is what happened to Keel in the content cut from the anime. By cutting this story beat, the anime removed these "zombie apocalypse", and "Alien Chest-buster" elements of the LN from the anime.

Yeah, I mean, I really just wanted to discuss the different ways it could be interpreted because, well, you know the internet, but I think Keel is more just, a kid that didn't know what was what. Her world also isn't one where she'd have different expectations on what kind of job or life she could have based on being a boy or a girl (her biggest role models are Raphtalia and Sadeena, who are both women and among the strongest fighters Keel has met, and they live in a country with a matrilineal monarchy, so it's not like the difference between being a girl and a boy in a proper medieval setting).

  • @Norinia
    @Norinia Před 2 lety +9

Just a quick addition to Naofumi’s slave pacts,
It was also mentioned at one point that if an average person had gained as many levels as fast as Naofumi and the group do, they would have died from it. That an average person literally cannot level as quickly as the heroes, due to the impact it has on them.
That is the bigger reason why Naofumi keeps the slave pacts going. It’s a far bigger risk to the group to stop and they suddenly hit that level death, than simply keeping the system as it is. Like Raphtalia explains early to the spear hero, Naofumi never abuses the pact anyways.
At worst, he used it to shock sense into his party members when shock takes their senses away momentarily. Even then, he released the order when trying so with Raphtalia and the mini Cerberus, changing it instead for her to get to her own safety.
It’s not out of cruelty, and since he has been trusting the group far more, I’ve yet to seen him use it since. He might start doing so a bit more now that Rishia and Keel are joining up, since they aren’t used to their combat flow, but otherwise, it’s a legitimate hack to avoid otherwise deadly consequences.

I remember reading an interview of the author, and a question regarding the reveal of Keel's surprise, he mentioned he had originally planned for a female character to be introduced to take on that roll Keel has later on. He also didn't know exactly what to do with Keel, so he decided to merge the two characters into one, and have the surprise "I'm a girl?" be a fun a cute thing. Given how he loves to write things in ways where you as a reader have to interpate things your own way, it might very well be what you mentioned regarding being trans or growing up so fast you don't have a chance to get used to your body. Just like you have plenty of situations where Raphtalia is acting clearly out of jealousy, but Naofumi doesn't see that or misunderstands a situation completely. Or why daddy dragon doesn't wanna tell his daughter he's now alive again, because he sees what a strong and independent your woman she's become, one who has the balls to on plenty of occasions stand up to Naofumi. And by revealing himself to be alive at that point would risk her development, he decides to stay quiet.
The one thing I always loved about Keel though, something you didn't mention in the video (not that it's super important), is how she's as ruthless as Naofumi regarding trade and being a merchant. Always found that kinda funny, how she was almost as good as Naofumi in trading, and if memory serves, he even talks about her learning the trading skills way faster then he did in his inner monologue.
Her always being so cheerfull, being able to bringing the smiles to the faces of everyone, and that puppy form always helping with that. And the "Shield Bubba" or "Bubba", actually cute. I mean, it tells you something that it's the only character in the entire story that can get away with calling Naofumi something and him not getting pissy or annoyed. Sure, might not be the biggest fan at first, but I always got the sense that if she would have called him Naofumi out of the blue one day, he'd feel awkward. And I'm pretty sure, if anyone ells tried calling him bubba, their slave crest would activate. Okay, bit of an excarnation, but you get my point. In terms of combat, she's not much of a fight, she's more on the sidelines, and I would also call her a supporting cast character, but for a supporting cast character, she plays such an important roll. If she wasn't three the story would defiantly be missing something. It's hard to explain exactly what it is she brings to the story, for me at least, but she's an important part indeed.
Thanks again for a lovely video. Sorry for my long winded comments, I just have such a love for this series and it's clear you do to. Guess I just wanna share my passion when I have the chance, even if it is just in a CZcams comment section. :-)

Of course, I only recently started studying Japanese and have not even read ahead yet in English, therefore, I am not sure if I would feel differently if I knew how words were used. I just think that is a expressed trait of rapidly aged Demi humans. They are adult in some ways, but very much children in other ways. I say this as someone who was naive and a late bloomer. I was probably very childish in similar ways, even without any help from supernatural aging.

Keel just seems like a typical tomboy in anime. Anime tend to have characters male or female who they try to trick you on looks alone that they could be the opposite gender, and then you find out what gender they are, and they end up going by their real gender once you find out. I think I heard somewhere what Keel was suppose to be male, and a minor character, but because Keel was going to be similar to another character, they change Keel to female so Keel wouldn't conflict with the other character, but I could just read that wrong somewhere. Also when their Trans Anime seems to just let you know their trans and move on (Which I prefer over western media, since Western media they shove it in your face every chance they get, like if they don't keep telling you, you might forget they were trans)

As you were explaining all the different abilities of demihumans, I started wondering if it was just a clickbait kinda title, since these were things one could easily guess from watching the anime, but then you hit me with Keel being a girl I was like "okay, that title earns itself".
However, it was a few minutes after watching this that something you said about the Slave Crests and how they work clicked and suddenly makes something else make way more sense.
When I watched your video about whether the other heroes actually get better and you mentioned Whore being able to manipulate them all, I was kinda confused how she pulled it off and even had the confidence to try considering how piss weak she was at the end of season 1.
    Her Slave Crests.
If the Slave Crest boasts one's states and allows them to level up faster, it would make sense Whore gained enough strength to feel confident enough to go about manipulating the other heroes as much as she does in the late arcs, but her double Slave Crest has allowed to get much stronger, faster.
Granted, she'd more than likely still lose in a one on one fight with Raphtalia, since Whore is the kind of person who would only train when she wants to, whereas Naofumi and co train pretty much daily, but it does explain why, after getting revealed in front of the kingdom and stripped of her title as Royalty, she could be confident enough to try something with such short-term larger benefits

    • @NatalieXHunter
      @NatalieXHunter  Před 2 lety

Actually, the slave crest she has probably doesn't have that effect - it's a specific thing Naofumi has, where he unlocked slave and monster master skills in his shield (by his shield absorbing some of Raphtalia's hair, some of the ink used for slave contracts, and some of Filo's shell, IIRC). So, it applies to people who are Naofumi's slaves, not to slaves in general. Bitch didn't have a slave contract with Naofumi, only with the queen and Motoyasu. Bitch managed to get hers pretty much disabled so was acting freely.

Just sucks how some of the other cardinal heroes moments may have been cut. Although seems like there is some hate for this season although that is probably due to the result that Naofumi got justice after being betrayed. 5:48 NatalieXHunter, well as someone who owns and read a bit of the original language of Rise of the shield hero... It was hinted at HEAVILY through she would constantly switch with speech patterns that wound hint at her even further being a girl. Mainly she would often phrase oni-chan ( brother ) more affectionately, and often would sneak in わ ( Wa )、の ( No ) in her speech would is often indictive of feminine speech. They're characters who do break that rule like Kizuna where she refers to herself as "Ore", but it was clear SOMETHING IS OFF. Another detail I find is sort of left out of translation... I don't own English copies, でも。。。 The odd use of 兄ちゃん ( It's written with Katakana in the Novel ) as a way to express affection. I find Kiel's tomboyishness endearing, when she was eating the crepe for being a lil' shit during the brainwashing arc was hilarious as it wasn't supposed to be good, but she didn't give a crap! Hell Naofumi originally thought she was going grow into a "美少年” AKA (Beautiful Young Boy ) or can be translated Feminine young boy. I don't really buy English Light Novels due to being dramatically worse service, quality, and well... Heavy distrust of localization companies like Seven Seas and Yen Press who HAVE CENSORED SERIES BEFORE, and hell found their censorship in a Manga before.

In the Web Novel the author actually explains why she chose for Keel to be a girl. Simply because there just wasn't anything special about Keel in the grand scheme of things and the author thought she was boring. So she made her a girl to introduce a new character arc in a way that doesn't break the canon of the story. Although the LN doesn't follow the WN, the reasoning behind the change wouldn't differ.
So no Keel was never originally intended to be a girl. Although that doesn't disprove the fact that she's not supposed to be a "trans" character. But it really doesn't fit the arcs or reasoning behind the change in the story so it's a bit of a stretch to make that connection.

She is the Guardian of the Creepes tree that doubles as guardian of Naofumis village way down the road. As she is the last of this generations residence to die of old age while living in the village and she became completely obsessed with the Creepe tree that Insane Naofumi made on a whim to help feed the villages residences. @@NatalieXHunter I hope so. I admit that theWN ending was handled weird; like They wanted to just cut the story off... no explanation of things after final conflict at all kind of cut off. Because a series of special chapters were used instead. In those extra we learn of events... 500 years later? A number of years required so Filo was then Fitorias age when we first met her. With the time travel arc you would know better than me since I have not reached there in the LN yet. From Filo we learn of what happened to Melmarc and Naofumiland (one of these days I will remember his areas correct name) and other people and places that Filo could know of.
Thanks to events Naofumi and Raphtalia become Omnipresent, and able to craft avatars like you would make your DnD character by controlling amount of memory and capable life span but would remain connected to all of them so those avatars memories and experiences could be their own... and since they could go anywhere in the multiverse to set this up in a universe (here a Naofumi and There a Naofumi) its my theory that WN cannon is the literal root of the other cannons.
That level of open end is as appreciated by me as cursed out at. Define spoiler when a separate source may in fact be the same source because the moment in the story where it would come to light is only for the most part the end of the other cannon sources. If intended that is a brilliant Evil Scientist play by the Author.

To be perfectly honest when the whole keel gender reveal thing happened my initial response was to mutter out loud " what the f***." then immediately think to myself oh sure just genderbend one of the few male characters in the Shield Hero's party. Like Natalie said she basically became comic relief after that point anyway so it didn't really matter but still when I was reading it the whole situation just kind of felt weird and pointless.
Now Natalie does have a good point here, that I didn't really think about at the time. The fact that Keel was suffering from a type of early age gender dysphoria. A condition that was Amplified by the rapid aging that Demi humans in the Shield Heroes world go through (a part of the World building but doesn't make absolutely any f****** sense, if you think about it and has a lot of implications that goes completely ignored, at least from what I've read.) a condition Which by the way is far more common than you might think. The data can vary wildly depending on how you crunch the numbers but somewhere around 40 to 60% of kids (in our world) will suffer from some type of gender dysphoria before they reach adulthood. So I'm not going to call keel's "Ark" unrealistic or anything like that, and you could probably convince me that it helps highlight some of the struggles that Demi humans in that world might go through. but if I'm being honest keel kind of become something of a nothing character, at least in my opinion.
Though Full disclaimer I'm not a big fan of the shield hero light novels, I like the anime and I haven't got around to reading the manga. But when I was reading the light novels shortly after watching the first season of the anime, I found myself not liking the light novels all that much. I have many reasons for that I don't want to get into here, but I just wanted to say this for the sake of transparity. That's some of my bias against the light novels might slip into this little opinion piece.
