Why Ukraine Kept defending Bakhmut

  • Is Bakhmut surrounded or is it the location of a Ukrainian Army Counter Attack? But a Russian assault in this direction would be just as costly and would require assaulting through wide open terrain once again. And how exactly did they successfully assault past wide open fields with no cover up to the urban center of Bakhmut in the first place?
Russian forces made Bakhmut the location of their main offensive efforts starting in August 2022 when they began heavy artillery shelling. A Russian missile strike on September 22nd blew up the main bridge that crosses the Bakhmutka river which disrupted Ukrainian military logistics and made the eastern half of the city more difficult to defend. By early November 2022 much of the combat around Bakhmut had turned into trench warfare. Ukrainian soldiers had built a network of trenches in front of the city.
Trenches might seem antiquated but in reality even with all of the modern advances in technology breaking through a fortified defensive position is incredibly difficult. Your enemy you’re aiming at in a trench presents a very small target and it’s impossible to fire a small arm round through 6 feet of dirt. The biggest problem facing soldiers who are using trenches is its difficult to get your resupply to the trench line, you can’t just drive up an armored vehicle and drop off supplies they need to be carried by hand.

If Wagner then withdrew from Bahkmut due to its reduced manpower it would create a large hole in the Russian front line. Bachmut is only useful to defend in two ways:
1 - If it ensures a favourable exchange ratio (this seems to not happen anymore)
2 - To keep the Russians attacking instead of taking a winter pause which would require Ukraine to go on the offensive (and have increased casualties as a result)

Most officers worth the title can run you through the basics.
You can conclude it from the following datapoints:
-Ukraine relies a lot on counterbattery fire to keep Russian artillery down. Bachmut's flanks having been seized means there's now a hinterland where Russian artillery can operate safer since it's further from the general frontline, but close enough to Bachmut.
-The quality of Ukrainian infantry is generally higher than Russian.
-Urban fighting is always a fairly close affair, troop quality matters less than in open fields. (why do you think the dumb Russians did Stalingrad? So Sergei Conscriptovich has a better chance against Hans Highly Precisemann)
-The Ukrainians have spoken repeatedly of a hard situation and a less favourable exchange ratio
-The Ukrainian government has made it clear this is about prestige and the name Bachmut for them. (now they do misdirect with those statements at times, but there's that)

Zelensky probably thought nato would directly intervene early in terms of man power and no fly zones. The u.s and nato gave him that false hope, he continued to be bold because nato “has his back”. He later realized they lied to him and peace talks were underway but he got emboldened again by borris johnson. Once again he realized nato wouldn’t fully step in so he sent a drone to and crashed into a nato member in the balkans, claimed it was Russian, then again in poland whether it was on purpose or because the air defense missiles that failed to intercept don’t explode in the sky and they fall back down but he blamed Russia. But now he’s getting more support from nato but I doubt they will fully commit, which will drag out this war.
I personally think this war is to wear down Russia economically and militarily as well as wear down Europe and its euro down to create a bigger dependency on the u.s to keep europe away from Russia but especially China thus ensuring u.s hegemony at the expense of freezing unemployed Germans and other Europeans as well as u.s taxpayers. But the most important one is at the expense of ukranians and their land. More soldiers and land could’ve been saved by a peace deal, they could’ve even regained land with a peace deal, but talks fell through more land has been taken and many men have been sacrificed. To ukraine it’s understandable to want their land back but to the u.s they’re just another proxy, pawn, chess piece and profit to the military industrial complex.

As someone who has never been into military things, ideas, tactics, or strategies even I immediately understand (like the Ukrainians) that Bakhmut is the MOST ideal place to fight a very hard, deadly battle, if there ever is such a thing: it is, today, almost completely free of civilians....
Over 99% of the dead and casualties are soldiers on both side.... with the Ukrainians being able to show what they have in military equipment & skills (both aspects of things are supported by NATO nations, with thousands of ordinary Ukrainian soldiers and officers alike being trained by Germans, Brits, Spaniards, Americans, French and with TENS of billions of dollars worth of heavy machines, weapons, munition, drones, and even fighter jets pouring in)...... drawing in as many thousands of Russian cannon fodder as they possibly could draw from the other sectors of Ukraine that Russia has occupied.
This is one of the truly rare instances where you could say "We fight there (in a deserted town tens of miles from any other major city), so they don't come here (to the cities)..."
The American politicians and military "experts" who keep telling Zelensky and the Ukrainians that they should just let the Russians take Bakhmut because "it has no strategic importance" sound so dumb, I wonder how we would survive in a real war.... if that's their Sun Tzu approach to war.
Russians don't have magic or endless supply or weapons and man power; if they pour enough equipment and soldiers into this tiny area, the other sectors will have to do with less equipment and man power... making it easier for the defenders, the Ukrainians, to plan for and to go offensive in those other sectors...
The best "strategy" in a battle and in a war is to kill as many enemies as you could, in the most isolated places where civilians and city infrastructures are the least involved.
No one has to be a military genius like Sun Tzu to understand that!

    • @noobster4779
      @noobster4779 Před rokem +4

You could literally use the soviets during WW2 as a counter example
The soviets had a worse officer corps then the germans and fought more basic, while the germans fought onthe back of their elite officer corps trained from 1919-1933. Small in size but trained to oblivion do to versailles treaty limits.
The soviets simply threw so many basic soldiers and troops at the germans that despite germany winning massive victories in 1941 their officer corps bleed compleatly white. When the germans finally reached Moscow the elite of their forces, their backbone for all their previous victories, had basically died along the way by slow atritton. Afte that the germans became more and more bad at fighting do to new officers being of significantly lower quality. germanys main advantage was gone and it turned into a numbers game that germany simply couldnt win long term.
Same thing happened in Ukraine. The ukranian army before 2014 was an absolute shitshow of incompetence. However after 2014 they changed absically everything and more or less became a more modern, western military. This new military, these new officers with the post 2014 training and their new weapons was the main reason why the ukranian army could hold against the russians so well in 2022. However here is the problem: Atritton and mass mobilization. Over time a big portion of ukraines initial post 2014 literally died fighting throughout 2022. This was all out war after all. At the same time ukraine mobilized the entire country for war and increased the armys size several times over. This resulted in a huge ammount of mobilized forces needing both training and more importantly a lot of pre 2014 trained and now reserve or retired military personal returning to the army that were still trained according to the pre 2014 soviet doctrines. Ukraine however didnt have the luxury to retrain everyone to NATO training for obvious reasons. Meaning while the post 2014 army bleeds out slowly they are replaced by eather fresh mobilized recruits or pre 2014 trained personal who follow soviet doctrine.
In short, the ukranian army right now is effectively 2 armys at the same time. The old soviet army called in and the new western army bleeding out. And we already see this in a lot ofcases where ukranian units more and more go back to soviet style command tactics instead of NATO mission tactics because that is what these older officers were trained on. While this isnt that big of a problem for defending, it is a massive issue for attacking.
Ukraine now runs the risk of bleeding their few remaining somewhat functioning post 2014 regiments and veterans, especially officers, to death in battles like Bachmut that they desperatly need for any hope of an offensive. Because the longer the war goes, the more the ukranian army will by default go back to fighting like a soviet army. Fewer good officers, more older officers, worse officer training, etc.
As with the example shown above with the WW2 german army, this was and is a massive problem for any country that had to short term prepare for a war and decided to build its force on a small officer corps or had to change doctrine. The germans post 1943 fough the war in parts like WW1 and went back to "hold city X at all cost" strategies instead of a mobile defense with catastrophic results. I fear ukraine might have the same problem. Back in summer 2022 they made the smart decision to abandon Lysichansk at the right time to save the troops inside the city, conducting a mobile defense. However now they changed and went to a fortress strategy in Bachmut.
Even if Russian loses 7 soldiers to 1 ukrainian soldier, ukraine needs that one experienced and post 2014 trained soldier much more then russia needs the 7 mobilized grunts. Russia can always jsut call up another million barely trained canon fooder to continue their way of fighting. Urkaine doesnt have that luxury. Once the post 2014 troops and officers are dead in a high percentage, the ukrainian army is in a really bad spott. Because if it comes down to two soviet style armies fighting in the end, russia is at a massive advantage because it simply has more of everything for at least a year or two more if the west doesnt step up support massively.
It might be that, while being a victory, the defence of Bachmut has doomed the potential success of future ukranian offensivs. Both a russian conquest of the city and a ukranian defense of it are in my opinion pyrric victories for eather side. However I believe russia can rebuild its forces quicker then ukraine because fightign a "dumb war" of static lines and mass artillery is russias strategy for months already while ukraine relied on its mobile forces to retake its land.
And sadly all the western training happening in 2022 adn 2023 is barely a drop of water compared to the loses. And you dont train a good officer in a few weeks, that takes months and years.Time ukraine doesnt have.

@@noobster4779 An absolutely excellent and spot on analysis. Only things to add are that I think the Russians return to the simple method of war because it actually functions well for what they need. Break down ground tactics. The Russians are actually just utilizing artillery and air power alongside squad sized probing attacks with platoon sized follow ups on trenches. I've seen them use drones to direct artillery fire to cover infantry movements in a literal accurate creeping barrage style to give a better surprise. Wagner routinely uses their men like SF, they sneak them through all kinds of cover well into enemy lines, have them call in strikes, then storm areas, dig in, call more strikes to hold, then the Russian line moves up. They do use their armor, but it seems either in squad or platoon level assaults or they'll suddenly shift from superior firepower and small group tactics to mobile warfare and try to blitz a position, like we saw in Vuhledar. Vuhledar was a failure, this is correct, but good example of how they are willing to use both tactics and do know what they're doing. The Russian officer corp is a funny thing. They do have competent officers. It's just many more tended to be corrupt and not as good. The position changing of officers towards the middle and later parts of 2022 showed Russian attempts at improvement in leadership and I think overall they succeeded. Russians also had a ton of officers get killed early on through lack of operational security. Those tended to be the bad officers. Who took their place? Grunts who were fighting and are more practical. Actual Russian army hasn't taken as many casualties as Ukraine, bulk of "Russian" casualties are not Russian Army, but DPR/LPR troops. Volunteers and militias. Russians certainly have lost a decent amount, but not a catastrophic amount. They got half their corrupt/incompetent officer corps killed... which ironically, has helped them now. Of course, some survived, like the fella leading Vuhledar, but the Russian army now feels more confident and competent than they did in the months after Feb-Mar. Plus they actually have better supply and are not as constrained by the original 200k personnel limit. That also majorly fucked them up. Either way, either post brother, keep up the good work

    .577/450 Martini-Henry

    Its deadly for sure.
The gun's cyclic firing rate was theoretically 520-580 rounds per minute, which was reduced to 250-300 rounds per minute during actual use. Its maximum range was estimated at 3,500 metres with an effective range of 2,700 metres = 1.67 Miles.

"Bakhmut holds" is SO VERY VERY similar to the Warhammer 40k quote "Cadia Stands!" in reference to the single most important planet at the time that was the only thing keeping the eye of terror from expanding and eventually consuming the entire galaxy. The Imperial Guard that were on the planet fought the forces of Chaos for five years. In the end, the BBEG cracks the planet, and everyone on it dies. It was said that even as the planet cracked underneath their feet, the Guard kept fighting till their last breath. Neat.

The Maxim is much older than WW2. Pretty sure it was developed in the late 1800's, but it is still a great machine gun. In some ways it's superior to modern machine guns. For instance, as a fixed position gun you're really only limited by how much water you have and how long the ammo belts are
