2018 - 2020 Ford F150 Oil Loss or Oil Consumption Technical Service Bulletin

Trying to keep my fellow truck camper friends informed, this seems to be the only group who appreciates my write ups and sharing. Other groups complain and moan
So today at the dealer I ran across a new technical service bulletin that I didn't know was out on oil consumption
I ran a relative compression check and I didn't find any issues with the motor at all
At Idle - I monitored short-term fuel trim and long-term fuel trim and didnt Find any issues at all
I went on a test drive and I monitored upstream and downstream O2 sensors and I could see during the down shifting periods on this vehicle there was a slight blip or mishap in the way it was reading oxygen wise and I was like what the heck man something is odd between the shifting points here and it was normally on downshifts between upshifts or something to that extent it was so quick it was hard to pinpoint without an onboard recorder hooked up
The original customer concern was oil consumption but I wanted to verify this for myself not Just look directly at the technical service bulletins even that's what I should have done I wanted to expierience or see an issue looking at data
Often times Techs wont go the extra step that I did to look at fuel trims because they are lazy and just want their check out time and do minimal work and just write it up as NPF ( no problem found ) I can not do that to someone and luckily I work at a dealer that takes pride in FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
After racking my brain and getting very frustrated I went to the technical service bulletins and found an updated bulletin for 2018 to 2020 Ford F150 with the 5.0 Coyote engine V8 naturally aspirated
I have a video showing you the new dipstick that we put in the vehicle and talking about the programming and showing you some of the steps I take to get into the computer and things like that but not super important to most
So basically whenever the truck starts to downshift the computer starts shutting down injectors to conserve fuel and whenever those injectors come back online whenever driver demand via the gas pedal being pushed and it sees the accelerator pedal position sensor show two opposing signals ( voltage wise ) it's a dual signal Accelerator Pedal Sensor....one going up one going down in voltage it knows it wants more fuel or less basically saying the drivers putting his foot back into the gas wanting to go faster or more power.... it starts engaging those injectors again
When it takes injectors away and then brings them back online really quick it creates this vacuum and it sucks the oil up from the crankcase into the intake and we basically start burning oil during your downshift and then acceleration event because it's trying to conserve fuel but in order for the cylinders to catch up the other ones have to work so much harder it creates this excessive amount of vacuum and the fix to it is Ford wanting us to reprogram the computer so the injectors don't get pulled off line during a downshifting event and only during Cruise operation if that Vehicles built with the fuel saving programming
The older F-150s were direct injection but we were having a lot of carbon buildup on the back of the valves....40k miles as I'm pulling these engines apart looked like 150k miles with the amount of carbon/soot build up so they started doing a direct injection and port injection for multiple reasons
( Guys With turbo engines started running CATCH CANS to stop the calves from becoming carbon coated as fast )
With Port and Direct I injection -
better start up capability
more power could be built and the back of the valves now start getting cleaned instead of letting them get junked up with carbon buildup
now with this being a naturally-aspirated engine there's no reason for that but the newer vehicles are starting to go to that port and direct-injection style just to eliminate driveability concerns
So basically the gist of it is we put a new dipstick in - for some reason Ford moved the warning indicator hole further down the dipstick on the new one
We change the oil and put a new filter on it 8.75qts 5w20 and a Fl 500 filter
And reprogram the computer to stop the injectors from getting shut down on downshifting events so it doesn't create excessive vacuum and then start pulling oil from the oil pan into the intake whenever they come back online
I've explained everything here but I'm going to leave a video from my CZcams that I made today while I was kind of explaining things and showing you what I was doing at the same time - Zábava

Does this apply to older 5.0 I got a 2011
Will geebanger no, only the 3rd gen coyote engines
Have you seen any 2020 5.0’s burn oil? Are they good engines?
@@haddonsmith345 So far no issues
FULL CEND - TKM Good deal. Just purchased a 2020 platinum with the 5.0 and I love the truck but really hoping I don’t get oil consumption problems. I change my oil every 5k so maybe I can avoid it for now
I don't miss these issues at all. I bought a 2018 F150 with the 5.0 engine brand new within 2000 miles I couldn't get a reading on my dipstick that was the first time I checked my oil 2000 miles I should have checked it sooner I got put on the list for oil consumption I went to the dealer they scribed my dipstick and checked me every few hundred miles at 3977 my my first engine was replaced after about 2000 miles on the replacement engine I noticed it too was using oil or oil was going somewhere at least it was the most painful 9 months of my life owning that truck I literally spent more time driving dealership demos than my own truck in the end Ford never even gave me all of my money back for lemon law they treated me like crap and their customer service is terrible I now drive a Toyota I feel upset about it though in a way because the Ford was the first new truck I ever had and I was happy to own it until I realized what a problem it would be.
I was in the market for my first new truck last year. I was pretty set on a stx f150 supercab 5.0. 373 truck. Then I heard about the oil consumption on the 18+ trucks. The amount of people bitching about it was nuts. I ended up going with a tundra instead. Needless to say. The truck is Awsome. 🤷🏻♂️.
I also bought a brand new 2018 Ford 150 with the 5.0 Coyote. I bought it because it was highly recommend and most of my company fleet is Ford. We has issues from the start with excessive oil consumption and almost zero answers from the dealership. They had my truck almost 1-2 times per month for 1-2 days at a time without offering a loaner. I was very disappointed, not only with my dealer, but with Ford. None of the TSBs ever fixed our problem. After a year of issues we traded in off for Toyota Tundra. I really wanted to love Ford but this was just too much to deal with.
Hey When I was looking into a new truck the Toyota Tundra came right into mind. Several friends on mine have them and love them. I looked into the other big three. Passed on Gm. Ford didn’t give me any deal. Dodge gave me a good trade and pricing. Couldn’t find a Tundra and didn’t want to wait. Went with Dodge 6.4 Hemi. It runs very well does use some oil Thinking it has same issues as Ford cylinder deactivation oil use. It still has low mileage so maybe still breaking in. I will probably trade it in for Tundra if something I like comes along.
Agree. I have a 2018 also. Same issues, but I didn’t notice my issues until WAY later. The problem was probably going on for a while. I regret buying this truck.
One thing I learned from all this is that I will never own a ford for as long as I live.
Engineering at its finest
Wording at it’s finest.
Great video. Thank you. Love that you are a dealer mechanic. Please keep the 5.0 fixes coming.
I sure will
One I will talk about tomorrow is the type writer sound coming from the engine
Love working at the dealer giving people updates straight from Ford
czcams.com/video/oGlROM1QKaM/video.html
I had the longer dipstick put in mine and tsb done didn't work. Dealership replaced the engine. Now im on my 2nd oil change with 3600 miles and oil is at the bottom of the dipstick. I call bullshit on fords fix it doesn't work. I will be taking mine back to the dealership this weekend. I would advise anyone in the market to stay away from the 5.0. Oh how about that transmission to junk.
@@kenwilson2314 what year is your truck? I'm looking at a 2017 with the 5.0? Also what tranny issue are you talking about?
Great information detailed keep up the great work,
I have an 2018 Lariat with the 5.0. It went thru 2 separate oil consumption tests. Missed being too much. After the second one the TSB shown was done by the dealer. In 3000 miles it was down a quart or close to it again. I changed the oil MotorCraft semi-synthetic like every change. I used 5-30 instead of 5-20…….The engine no longer uses any oil in 2 subsequent changes. Easy fix. The truck has had a catch can since new.
I thought about getting a 2019 ford f150 lariat 5.0 or you think 3.5 is better? I do planning to keep the truck for awhile.
So I’m still hearing three issues plasma arc cylinder lining which is wearing away, pcv vacuum programming, or the rings aren’t seating properly during break in . Which is it ????
I've got a 19 with 34,000 miles on it all of that's been done dipstick reprogram it still using oil fixing to get rid of it
Ford was replacing engines for awhile be id this issue on the 5.0 liter. I own a 3.5 ecoboost and it doesn’t use any oil at all between changes, the level is the same when I change it at 4-5000 miles as it is when I put it in..I’d love to go back to a V8 , once you have the torque from the ecoboost it makes the 5.0 feel a bit weak until it’s wound up. Love the sound of the coyote.
So I do this professionally and I work on these trucks every single day that 3.5 L EcoBoost is one of our biggest problems with the timing chains and phasers and the Turbos leaking.....although you might have good experience with one there is also just as much bad that people don't talk about other than me
the 3.5 is stout dont get me wrong but the 5.0 will still always be the most reliable f150 of the new trucks until recent
I had a 2018 F150 King Ranch that a spec built myself. Waited 11 weeks to get the truck. It was a dream truck for me but couldn’t wait to get rid of it in only 13 months. The engine consumed oil like mad. Ford at the time would not acknowledge the problem. The truck started to give a puff of smoke at startup with only 13,000 miles on it. Even if they were able to fix the oil consumption issue there was still the cam phaser rattle that happened upon deceleration when cold, it sounded like the ball in a spray paint can being shaken. Also if you had to accelerate hard the transmission would make a loud clunk under the passenger front seat between second and third. And to top it all off the transmission would shift so early when just cruising around in town unless you were hard on the gas pedal ( which I wasn’t). The transmission would be in 9th gear by the time you hit 35 mph and then the truck would chug, be sluggish until it downshifted to give normal power even with the 5.0 L coyote. People say I should have got a tuner to adjust transmission but you shouldn’t have to do that on a new $68K truck besides it possibly voiding you warranty. I switched to a 6.7 diesel Super Duty and never looked back
I'm sorry to hear that and I definitely deal with customers who are in the same boat. The last few years have indeed been rough with ford
@@fullcend-tkm73 yeah it’s hard to love Ford because you know you will get your spirit broken. It’s like being in a did functional relationship. I’m hoping my 2020 Super Duty 6.7 will treat me right. Good video. I was told that it was the cylinder linings they put in the new 2018+ coyote engines. I’m glad they found a fix. I had a $500.00 oil catch can system that caught a decent amount of oil but was always concerned that the valve train already got fouled by blowpass oil. And living in the cold climate I was concerned using an oil catch catch when it’s single digits outside
New sub. Thank you.
PLEASE POST MORE VIDEO CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. THANKYOU

What are your thoughts on a 2020 Ford f150 4x4 with a 3.3 v6 and a 6 speed trans? Considering an extended cab with this engine. Any problems? Longevity?
I have no problems with this combination so far but this is brand new so we shall see
I threw the sway bar away. I rarely will drive over 80 in the shit traffic of LA and plus more travel for off roading but yes my 2020 F-150 5.0 does have this issue. Either way I change the oil every 4-5k miles with Amsoil. I run E85 is why. If I didn’t I would let it go way longer
Is there a fix on this yet? Or are they just slapping cylinder deactivation on this engine for 2021 without a fix. Should be interesting. I’m just curious because I almost bought one. I really liked the truck. Feel bad for all the people dealing with this.
Cylinder deactivation mainly that's as far as I know but none of them have come back with more consumption
Ford isn't the only manufacturer having oil burning issues. Many have been using low tension oil control rings to help with fuel economy, creating less drag on the piston. The unfortunate side effect is more oil burning. I had this procedure done to my 5.0 F150 and it helped a little bit but I did have the same reaction as most in the comment section here when I compared the old and new dipsticks side by side. This is a cheesy fix, I agree, however it should keep them out of litigation for a class action lawsuit. Many are also going with the composite oil pan as well, seems to be the new normal going forward. So far with 25k on mine, I've had zero issues with leaks. Drain plug placement sucks though.
Still holding up?
@@haddonsmith345 yup
So when a guy says their truck doesn't lose any oil they're full of crap? My 2011 5.0 consumes oil and it's annoying. I thought of getting rid of it but if every truck is consuming oil it doesn't make sense.
@@bradvincet1848 Who said that they would be full of crap? All engines consume oil, some more than others.
Bingo! Toyota has been doing this even longer! Changing your oil with good quality oil every 3000 miles is once again required.
Piece of advice on the 5.0 oil change, use a piece of cardboard and lift the catch pan and it'll save you from having to spray or wipe everything off from draining the oil.
That's a great idea
If its just a recalibration to control the fuel injectors then why the modified dipstick and extra qrt of eng oil ? Then you get crank windage splash and foaming ? And an $5 every oil change
I don't know what the reason is for the change in the dipstick level marks
Shame that Ford never resolved this issue with the 2011 ecoboost engines.
Are you supposed to add less oil after the bulletin?
Are pre-2018 5.0 V8s ok? Looking for F-150 or Tundra to replace Ram 1500. Thanks.
Seem to be yes
That oil pan and drain plug,,,,,what a joke.
I use Libman dust pan from Target to catch oil. Did the trick.
How about a Fumoto plug drain ?
So do you know if this is fixing the problem? I just dont like that ford is putting in a longer dipstick and widening the rang. I feel it's a bandage to a bigger problem. What are your thoughts?
Did you watch the video all the way through I specifically talked about them reprogramming the computer to stop the fuel injectors from getting shut off during downshifts when the events happening
We'll just have to give it time and see what happens
I have a 2022 F150 with the Gen 4 Coyote. No issues here for sure.
Crazy I don’t have a truck but my Camry has 225 k has no problems. Scary to buy a new car
Boom! SUBSCRIBED!
As of right now have not had one of the vehicles return that I've done but I've only done a handful so far so I couldn't really tell you exactly if what they're saying is correct
I actually have an automotive channel that I've been trying to ask people to go to because I don't talk Automotive on this channel anymore it's just nothing but cars guns and knives
Just ruined my whole plan to buy a new F150 Coyote. Have had a 3.5 before so no thanks on that unless I lease one. Hope this gets sorted out fast. Still don't understand how oil gets sucked up from the crankcase for ANY injector related reason. :(
If you're not going to tow much get the 3.3 v6
Hey Rich, I have a 2018 Ford F150 3.3L V6 I bought from Carmax. I bought it with 26K miles and I am now at 46K. What Maintenance should I have done and would it be a good idea to take it to my local Ford Dealer to do a Maintenance service?
So this is probably one of the most reliable set ups very basic very easy to take care of and if that interval the only thing that I would see that needs to be done
Cabin air filter behind glove box
I know most people don't like doing this because the coolant lasts a really long time but I don't trust old coolant so at about 50,000 miles I flush the coolant on my vehicles
And it all depends on how you feel about the brake fluid really the brake fluid should be flushed once a year but people don't do that the problem is brake fluid is so hydroscopic it absorbs moisture in the air and after the first year it's pretty much got quite a bit of water in it
So at 46,000 miles and it being a 18 I would say just really brake fluid and cabin air filter every else should still be good
lol! ford's fix for oil burning: add more oil and use a longer dipstick......hilarious!
And it's a reprogram to stop shutting the injectors off during downshifting events so the oil doesn't get sucked up during vacuum as the cylinders come back online
FULL CEND - TKM lets see the new and old dip stick side by side
@@emerylandry2074 he did
@@emerylandry2074 did you even watch the video?
@@fullcend-tkm73 I think what happens has more to do with the ETB slamming shut during decel....pistons are still going up and down (creating vacuum in the intake manifold) and the throttle plate is closed, no air can get by, so it pulls air from the crankcase(which is contaminated with oil)
I loved my truck then noticed a rattle; dealer said it was normal. Saw all CZcams videos showing this TSB isn’t some mystery.
So once they reprogrammed the PCV, it’s good? Won’t burn oil?
I did 2 and they never had issues after but I can't say if it's solid
@@fullcend-tkm73 I had this done to my 2020 5.0 and 3k miles later its bone dry again. Currently at dealer trying to figure out whats going on.
what does something like this cost to do on your truck? and is there a way to find out if your truck already had this tsb done to it?
I believe if you give a Dealer your VIN nbr they will be able to see if that VIN has had work done at a Dealer and it was logged into the system...
I just bought a 2020 at 150 with a 5.0 HI guess I checking my oil But does a 2020 have the Flash up the already knew district
My 2020 with the 5.0 has the newest oil dipstick seen is this video. It came from the factory with it. It doesn't appear to be using oil over the 4,000 miles that I have on it. Still at the highest level.
Will the dealer only do this if the customer ask for it? I have a 2019 with 12,600 miles and I heard about this, checked my oil, and it looks low to me.
You can reference this and the dealer will look into it for you
If that fix is supposed to correct the problem
Why add more oil and longer dipstic
I contacted my local Ford dealer and they have heard nothing pertaining to the TSB for oil consumption on the 5.0 .
They should go back to 1937 when they used a float in the oil pan and it stuck up though the intake so you could read the oil level. Incase anybody is wondering that was on a Lincoln zephyr v 12 flathead engine
today is just not quality anymore
I got my truck used how do i know if this has been done? How long is the stock dip stick in inches? is there a way to view the PCM in Forescan to detect the change?
Contact your local dealer and ask under warranty history
it's me. the 1st!
If reprogramming the computer did any good, why change the dipstick and filter?
I currently have a 2018 f150 5.0. Problem started with check engine light and error code P0025 and P0019. Took it to a Ford dealership who couldn't look at it until 3 or 5 days later forcing me to rent a car. They performed the TSB with the new dipstick and reprogramming the PCM. Everything ran great...for two weeks. Now the truck stalls and justs cuts off at low idle and runs like crap when running at higher RPM. Pulled the codes and got the P0025 and P0019 errors again. Suffice to say, now the truck is at a mechanic waiting to be looked at for this latest issue...which I'm sure is still related to the first issue 2 weeks ago...but this time it's worse. My first Ford...probably my last.
Any updates on that issue? My 2019 5.0 has also had some issues with the oil level being too low and I want to know the fix, either that or just rid of the truck.
I was thinking about buying another F-150 but after seeing this I will stay with my Tundra.
I traded my 18 F150 for 18 Tundra.
Tom Le Great choice!
I traded my 18 f 150 for tundra 2020
Wait for the 2021 mods. They ditched the 2018-20 5.0 engine.
Keep the Tundra, fabulous motor!
Curious - how many people have you had come back AFTER doing this TSB complaining that oil consumption continues?
So far I've had none
I had this TSB done to my 2018 F150 5.0L. It went from 1200 miles per quart to 3300 miles per quart. Still not perfect, but much better! The service advisor doesn’t understand why, but it shifts MUCH better too. Especially the stoopid skip shifts. Glad I had it done.
Did they ever start making these changes from the factory? End of 2020 2021?
yes indeed
Just bought a used 2018 5.0L with 27,000 miles on it and checked my oil seems to be a qt low after driving it 2000 miles, should I call the dealer and get this TSB done? I checked the oil when I bought it and had them top it off cause it looked a qt low after they did the oil change, and should I go by mileage or the oil life %, it says I have 50% oil life left?
Mileage
top it off and monitor it, call the dealer and see if you can get an appointment and ask if this applies to your truck.
@@fullcend-tkm73
Since I bought my truck used, how do I know if the latest TSB (19-2365) might have already been done? I did notice the dip stick is original but the PVC valve is the updated version. 2018 F150 Platinum FX4 Supercab, vin# 1FTEW1E5XJFB20109
How much would it cost me for something like this since i dint have warranty anymore
Where can I find a shop that will fix this problem?
I have a 2.7 ford ecoboost and that pan and drain plug is a pita. My yota started burning oil at about 250k miles. but it ran so good still and never had one issue other than alt and starter and oil pressure sensor. even had stock bushings and struts and the original trans fluid. yes the original fluid shifted great.
I dont think this ford is gonna last 150k without throwing money at it every year. Im gonna get rid of it at 80k miles lol.
Unfortunately you're correct they don't last very long before they start having problems and that's a huge issue
Had good luck with the ecoboost had 2015 and 2018 strong fast and good fuel economy.
Exactly they are very powerful and they do have very good at fuel economy but they inherently have a lot of issues leading front covers leaking oil pans leaking turbo seals excessive blow-by carbon buildup on the earlier models they don't have dual sets of injectors to clean port and direct
Those things that you pointed out are all that they were really that good at everything else was a nightmare I would never recommend somebody by an EcoBoost
@@fullcend-tkm73 the first gen had some but have seen alot with 150,000 plus no problems biggest thing was chain stretch. Love the second gen with duo fuel system. Still rather have than dodge. Head gasket, exhaust manifold. Anything they have that ends in 7 shitty.
The new 2021 have the newly designed engines and not the 2018-20 oil drinkers. I’m waiting on word now for a buyback and currently in line for complete engine change out.
exactly
Does that mean the 2021 has normal cast iron cylinder liners press fitted in the aluminum block? That is the only way Ford will ever fix the problem, plasma bore liners fail rapidly creating huge oil consumption. a thin layer of new metal is plasma welded to a bare engine block aluminum cylinder, then bored to spec, once bored to spec to receive the pistons its too thin, .010-.020 thouandths is all you get liner thickness, there is no rigidity in the cylinders with this thin cylinder liner, the block flexes under load creating abnormal cylinder wear.
I have a 2020 5.0 and after doing some research it seems like there is thousands of us with the same exact problem. We all need to join the EXCESSIVE OIL BURN CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT. And not let Ford keep getting away with there defective engines. Which we pay a fortune for these trucks . I only bought this truck because my father in law had a 2004 ford v8 that has almost 500 thousand miles and was still running with the original engine and transmission nothing like the trash im paying for now!
Nice job, did this fix the problem for sure?
Sorry I've been focusing on my other Automotive Channel I don't really come to this channel too much if you search Ford boss me you'll find me
Have these people never came back for consumption issues but I've been told by other people has not fixed the issue for them
What is the TSB number? I just bought a 2020 5.0 and they didn't mention if any TSB's have been taken care of. Maybe I can call and ask with the number and the VIN?
Call the dealer tell them that this is your VIN number and see if there are any open tsb's they will tell you which ones are open on your truck and ask them if they can give you a printout

All three trucks that I have done the update on with the dipstick and the reprogram have not come back with consumption problems
FULL CEND - TKM I have one built August 2018. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and haven’t experienced oil consumption with 14,500 miles on the truck. Do you think it’s wise to get this TSB on my truck so injectors don’t get turned of and create the high vacuum?

@@royalelwood9538 secondly if you're not having any issues then I would just leave it alone
FULL CEND - TKM The ford dealership also wanted the first oil change at 2,000 miles. I took it on a road trip varying the speed 400 miles when it was new.
The injectors turn off during down shifts to help with shift smoothness. When they turn back on it shouldn't create extra vacuum. Even if that was the case, it shouldn't be sucking up oil. Where is it sucking up oil from anyway? A reprogram and a longer dipstick sounds like a bandaid to get the customer through the warranty period. The longer dipstick must not have worked for all the owners that ended up having to have the engine replaced because of bad pistons, rings and cylinders.
I'm with you, your preaching to the choir. I deal with this daily, its not a fix ideally but this is what they are doing right now and we gotta roll with it
@@fullcend-tkm73
Yeah. Roll with it till it's out of warranty then Ford's off the hook and the customers are stuck with it.
I make these videos to keep you updated with what's going on with Ford not me and not what my beliefs are

Wow, I guess I'll keep my 4.6 Sport Trac alitttle longer. Why are American car companies forgetting how to make solid V8s? Chevy has AFM issues, Dodge Hemi lifters are eating cams and Fords new coyote has a thirst for black gold. Toyota seems like the only company making reliable V8s now.
Thats what I have

Sir where you get technical service bulletin
I have the same problem on my 2011 f-150 5.0 it consume a lot oil, so this will fix the problem? Is been like that since I buy it
Nope this is not going to fix yours
This is only for the new trucks you probably have some kind of compression issue like ring Gap or something is wrong with your PCV system
@@fullcend-tkm73 thanks for the answer
If you are low on oil, you need a longer dipstick.
Yeah that clearly doesn't make any sense I don't know why Ford did that
@@fullcend-tkm73
Because ford knows there's something wrong with these engines and they're just trying to get them through the warranty period.
I bought a 2020 F150 with the 2.7 L eco-boost. I really thought I wanted the 5.0 but the dealer told me with all the problems these engines have had Ford is discontinuing that engine. Of course that was a salesman talking not sure if that's true or not
Ford is not discontinuing that engine and it's the best engine that they produce out of the ones that they have
As of 8/12/20 Fords official web site says " the great 5.0 is being replaced by a new 4.8 with 420 hp and 420 torque, smoking the 5.0. Production of the 4.8 has begun and will be replacing the 5.0 by early 2021, so , direct from Ford, yes they are.
@@Tomcoker1952 yeah Tom, we will see what issues will come about with their new engine. If I were a betting man, I would bet there will be issues! On another note, plastic oil pan and a plastic plug lol.
Cheaply built vehicles, yet TOP bucks for them. In my view, the plastic oil pan, like the plastic intake manifold will end up as it ages developing a hair line crack necessitating replacement!

A great web site for ALL
If my old 97 f150 with 260,000 miles didn't use oil you would think a 2019 with 21978 wouldn't. Just sayin.and the air was colder than my 2011 also.
My 97 f150 5.4 had 332,000 miles when i traded it in. Didn't use any oil. It was much better than the new ones.
On my 3rd f-150, my last one, the doors wouldn't close when it got below zero, my current, an 18, used 5 quarts of oil before it's first oil change - they did the reprogram and new dipstick, still using oil. If this wasn't a leased vehicle, I'd sure be pissed as the next step is replacing the engine. I did my job, I notified them of the issue, I'll hand them the keys at the end of the lease and it's their problem after that. Question is, do I buy another f-150? I've not had good luck with GM products either, so do I jump ship and buy a Toyota?
It sounds like they haven't fixed the oil consumption issue yet, so I don't dare buy another coyote.
Can you jump up to an F250 with a 6.2 L that's what I would do
FULL CEND - TKM That would really be overkill for me. I’m not sure what I’m going to do - I’m losing faith in Ford, I may get a gm.
desmoface Try a Ram
ATX-CVPI I actually like Rams but I keep hearing horror stories about reliability. Resale value is the lowest, as well.
@@fullcend-tkm73 Dump Fords problem back on them in trade for the F250. Make sure the 6.2L has normal cylinder liners and not plasma welded cylinders.
I have a 2019 ford f150 with the 5.0 and at 1343 miles it had burned oil down to the bottom hole on the dipstick they did all of the updates that you did and I just went in for an oil change with 6400 miles at my local ford dealer for an oil change they told me it didn't burn any oil that time but they filled it with 10 quarts of oil not 8.75
Getting a 2021 5.0 this spring. Hopefully Ford has figured out this oil usage thing I am not buying a Ecoboost they are for leases. If you want a truck for 15 plus years get a V8. Funny how power train does not outlast the body anymore.
Good luck. Keep the radio up to cover up engine noise. Lol ford can't wait to drain your pockets.
I bet you trade it in less than a year.
Please dude stay away from Ford, I have a 18 platinum with the 5.0 I did all of the update crap and still burning oil, and my truck make a bad rattling noise when taking off, and sometimes when I take my foot of the gas I get a clunking noise, all the dealers kept saying they didn’t hear it but it’s very noticeable, and now Ford has put out a letter saying that it’s normal for the engine, and all of a sudden they started hearing it, but the say Ford says not to do anything about it, and fast forward now I have to get my dash replaced because it’s buckling at the top under the windshield wipers, come to find out everyone that has this truck has to get a new dashboard, dude save yourself the headache and don’t buy this truck, I bought it brand new because I knew by the time I was going to pay it off, I’d be retired the same month, but Ford has ruined my plans, now I have to take a hit on the depreciation and trade it in for another truck which is gonna put me two more years behind my retirement plan, screw Ford man because they have screwed me but I will never buy another Ford, but good luck
I will have a hard long talk with the techs I worked with at a Ford dealership 15 years ago now a tech at a Freightliner dealership. Yeah 2018 was the first year for plasma spray in cylinders in an aluminum block.Three years later who knows if its better. Dodge would be my second choice but the Hemi eats cams set too high in the block gets no splash from the rods at idle. The body electrical craps out after a few years. And forget GM have driven newer ones slush in a bucket. Have an 07 with the problematic 5.4 3V 170,000 K now still quiet over service the shit out of it and drive it hard . Only let me down once starter went out at 120,000K got it towed home to my garage a quick trip to the parts store in my sons 2012 Superbee yeah him driving fixed and to work the next morning. Yeah had the exhaust manifolds done the following spring by my old work lifted the cab lifted the engine out of the frame and did them properly at a fair price.Anyways lets see what 2021 brings 2020 has been the shitty year since 1966 when I became a player in this shit show.
Everyone keeps mentioning TSB for oil consumption. However, there’s no mention as to what TSB number this is?
I'll get it for you I could have swore I showed it in this video
It specifically states that right in the writing right in the beginning of the video TSB 19 - 2338
FULL CEND - TKM Thanks!
I thought I saw that when you were running the install, it had a note on the screen that the upgrade supersede TSB 19-2338?
Regardless still good info. Thanks again.
Just sold my 18 f150 was having this problem plus the transmission started having weird issues it won't be my problem anymore.
What did you end up picking up to replace it?
Just had this TSB done on my 19 F-150. Hopefully it solves the problem. I really love the truck.
Do feel like I explained a good enough here so other people would understand exactly what the issue was or potentially could be
FULL CEND - TKM Yes, pretty clear and to the point. I’m really hoping it fixes my issue. Got my truck in Sept, it only has 5,600 miles on it. That’s what warranties are for I guess. I’m thinking once the dealer near me are allowed to start selling again maybe I’ll trade it in for another one only because the deals are gonna be insane I imagine. I love the STX because it’s not bogged down with all the bells and whistles but I wouldn’t mind having nicer seats that come in the XLT’s.
Most of the dealers can sell right now but you have to go in by appointment, at least that's around here I should say
FULL CEND - TKM I called on Thursday here because they have a 6.5 Super Crew just like mine only it’s an XLT and I was told they aren’t allowed to sell. He told me hopefully in May. Crazy times.
@@lj.7311 it's not like that here....
Let me know what your looking for exactly and I'll see what we got. These dealers are desperate to sell now
What motor is this happening to? I have the 5.0
The 5.0 coyote...
You should measure the oil it came out and see how much oil is lost i do mine every 3000 miles and it lost about 1/4 of a quart of oil but then again some oil stay in the engine and oil filter
Well this is at the dealer and this is the first time the customer has been in for this so we treated accordingly by the technical service bulletins and we moved from there if it doesn't say don't take an oil sample or measure the amount we don't do that we just followed because we only get paid to follow
If it was my personal vehicle I would absolutely do that but it's not my personal vehicle I get paid to follow what the manufacturer tells me to do unless what they tell me to doesnt work then I can take things into my own hands
You are supposed to use up a certain amount of oil between oil changes so that would almost seem normal on what you're saying because you can lose up to a quart
Because we don't have total seal engine
That’s not true. I’m sorry that’s poor workmanship at the factory. Old engines yes but not new engines. It’s an excuse the manufacturers use to avoid engine replacements-that’s their right. I came from a family with Tundras with different engines and years. None burned oil-ever.
The technician where I bought my truck told me Ford designed this engine to use oil somebody please explain to me why
No lol that's not true just bad programming
They stopped putting steal sleeves in the piston cylinders THEY GOT CHEAP from 2018 forward. Now a flawed motor 5.0
I just ordered a TUNDRA
Mine is doing this
Man you guys use some old software compered to Hyundai GDS system. All wireless and tablet based but you probably have less crashes of the app.
We just use what Ford gives us
They have some newer stuff but we haven't got it
Does this f fix the problem? Thanks in advance.
It's still so new I don't know that for sure the few that I have already done that customer has not come back for any concerns
FULL CEND - TKM I’m about ready to lease a new 2020 5.0. This will replace my 2014 5.0 which was a great truck. I’ve been reviewing all these videos on this oil issue. The Ford dealer seems aware that there have been issues but seems to think it’s been resolved. Perhaps this is a ploy to get one to take their trucks to dealership for oil changes? I know I will be now. If I was buying this truck I’d have more concerns. Just hoping for no BS. Was very pleased with my 2014.
I noticed the 2018+ 5.0 have a smaller oil cap, kind of a little reminder this takes 8.8 quarts, not 7.7 like the first gen.
I'll make sure I pay note to that I always look every single time anyways so I don't try to remember that stuff because that's it up bad habits so I always go back to the Sharks and look or looking PTS
Mine is still eating 5 quarters per 5000 miles the reprogramming didn’t solve anything
Well you've got an issue definitely and the dealer is going to have to look into it
why do they constantly have problems?
2018 - 2020 were made with different cylinder liners
Just noticed that my truck is a little bit less than half between the min and max marks, it has 12,000kms it’s a 2020 5.0
keep track of miles between oil changes to track
I did just check the dipstick and it looks like the new one you installed in this truck, the separation between the min and max is longer, kinda hoping that it’s just that the programming needs to be done
@@fernandoborjas what I'm saying is the best thing for you to do in between your oil changes has to check how much you're losing, some is okay between oil changes you can lose up to a quart but anything more than that is not acceptable
FULL CEND - TKM thanks, I will do that, am I correct to say that between the min and maximum mark that’s a full quart? If so, I have lost about half a quart over 5,500km
@@fernandoborjas thats correct
I have a 2021 f150 3.5 ecoboost. It used 2 quarts of oil in the first 4,000 miles and then it stopped losing oil. Now has almost 9000 miles. Any idea why?
Other problems too like 1 of the crap Pirelli tires self destructing at 4k miles, and electronic problems too.
It was still breaking in
Does this fix the issue
have not had one come back, but only did a couple so far. We shall see
I bought a 2020 F150 5.0L V8 3 weeks ago, did ford have this issue fixed on the 2020 models?

CAN U PROGRAM THE NEW TRUCK SO IT DOESN'T SHUT OFF EVERY TIME U STOP?
No unfortunately
You can put a trailer connector in your trailer connector hook up and it's like one of those tests connectors and it will make it think that you have a trailer connected or you can troubleshoot the wiring diagram down to the single wire that goes into the trailer brake module not the whole connector and snip it or put in an inline switch to turn it off but you can't just program it to remove it
paul cristma Amazon sells OBD II port connectors that will shut it off permanently. Or so I’ve heard. Might check into that
@@shadowdestined2992 if it's under factory warranty don't plug anything into that OBD port

Adding more oil and longer dipstic
Think about it
I just bought 2019 today with lass than 11 k miles . If it burns oil I will keep taking it back until I can get a buy back under the lemon law
make sure every time you take it back it's documented the same way and the words are not changed
Okay thanks . I really hope it does not burn oil .
Just keep an eye on it I think you'll be fine I don't really see these all the time and I work on a lot of these
This will worry me something awful
Thanks man. I sure hope so
What does Ford consider normal oil usage on these motors?
Pretty standard oil use is about 1 quart for oil change or less
@@fullcend-tkm73 My used 2018 is about 1 quart low over the last 1300 miles and has 45000 miles on the clock. Hasn't had the 19-2368 TSB yet. Dealer said to bring it in for an oil change and bring it back every time I notice it's low so they can start monitoring it to do the TSB. But they said Ford considers 3 quarts in 5000 miles to be normal consumption? The TSB says 2 quarts once it's performed. Wtf?
As far as I knew it was one quart every oil change
But now they're making more power with these engines and they're trying to give more people what they're asking for efficiency wise so I can see how a little bit more might be allowable
Now you know why F150 don't last on African roads.
That doesn't help nothing but engine change and they wouldn't change mine so I got rid of it
Your somewhat right
I'm not too surprised because of one thing and I hate to create hate but it's a FORD! Customer shouldn't have 2 deal w nonsense like this but atleast ford is standing by it..Your gonna have problems w cars even new typically minor ones you'll have to take back 2 dealer such as water leak in truck or something along those lines but engineering like this! Especially FORD! 4 as much pride they put in their work and customers expect it to b worth is just saad., Hope it works out 4 customer
These over engineered engines have become a joke.... plain and simple. And now FORD denies another class problem.
Does it work??
So far I have not had anybody come back but some people are saying that it doesn't work I don't know that for sure nobody has come back to the dealership complaining or we haven't seen them consuming oil anymore
FULL CEND - TKM gotcha Drive my truck truck 400 miles and already to the add Mark. One more question is it in normal for 2018 5.0 coyote do you have a knocking sound between 1100 2700 RPM?
@@walterjeffrey1654 a lot of people complain about that man I can't say that it's normal but Ford does say they are noisy engines sometimes the phasers and timing chain start to go out on them that causes some issues as well
Just my two cents - if you have one of these trucks give it time. I have a 2018 5.0...yes it burned some oil at first but over time it slowed down. I'm at 17k miles and about 3k miles since my last oil change and the oil is barely just below the top dot now. This is with the original dipstick and I've never had an oil tsb done. The engine needs to break in properly. I get if youre over 30k and its still burning oil thats a concern but if you just bought the truck and its under 10k miles just drive it hard and see what happens. I saw way too many people begging to have their engine replaced before their truck hit 10k miles.
I agree give it time but if the manufacturer didn't think that it was an issue they wouldn't put a TSB out for it
Break in properly?? Trucks shouldn’t be burning multiple quarts of oil when new. End of story.
@@Bostonharborwater Nobody is disagreeing with that
Sometimes when people are set in what I have to say I don't even argue with them I just let them say what they have to say because they know everything
The most this truck should burn and that's not even time for that yet is about a quart of oil between every oil change and it will really never even get to that
@@Bostonharborwater ok and? Go fight ford on that one. I was simply sharing my thoughts as an owner of one of these trucks. If you bought one the problem is now yours to deal with
Truck the System I found out about the problem when I was looking to buy a 5.0 f150. Luckily I bought a tundra instead. Best decision I ever made. But I do feel really bad for the people stuck in this predicament.
It reminds me how they fixed the rollover problem by deflating tires, ford stays ford.
That’s shady. A longer dipstick? So it looks like you have more oil than you do. Guess that’s one way to make it look like they at least partially fixed the problem assuming the customer doesn’t know it’s replaced or that it’s actually longer than the original. Wonder if Ford is pissed that he showed the comparison.
Why would they be pissed at me for this ? I'm one of the techs that that work for them, if there's something to be honest about I'm going to be honest about it.
had a 19 3.5 HO F-150 and burnt 2 quarts of oil every thousand miles. Was in the shop 4 times by 2k...lmao...said cya ford with there shit and bought a Ram and problem solved
I live the ram
I've had 2015 and 2018 3.5 ecoboost no problems out run ram all day. Dodge has a lot of issues too used to work on plenty of dodges and Chevys.
Until your cam and lifters go out about 5000 miles after the warranty is over. Look it up. The Gen3 Hemi’s are eating their cams. Makes a little oil consumption seem not so bad.....
You must of got a bad one had alot of Fords run the hell out of them. Dodge has alot of problems too. Someone bought a 2019 had alot of problems traded for Ford been great. Have to get a good dealer. Ill keep my f150.
All of these vehicles have their problems but it's not our job to say my F-150 runs great I don't know what the hell you're talkin about you must be making stuff up
There's no denying here that there's obviously an issue some people get good ones some people get bad ones
it's the luck of the draw and if you're willing to take a $60,000 chance at luck of the draw then have at it but when people are putting out good information and just sharing stories on real situations it's nice to take note of that and not talk down the point of someone giving you free information that does it as a profession or a real life experience
All of these manufacturers are having problems right now it just all depends on which one you want to have as your problem
My 2018 Ford F150 just went back after the lease was up. I had every type of pickup. Ford by far is the biggest piece of garbage i ever had. In less then 3,000 miles the dip stick would be completely dry of oil, Ford would not acknowledge the problem! EF them!!! Never again!!!!
Thats not a fix
All there doing is adding more oil and longer dip stick
Same oil amount but changing location of where acceptable range is and reprogramming to stop the start/stop event during shifting
I say stick a 4.6 terminator engine in that f150 and be done
