  • The location of New Orleans as a city is largely because of Bayou St. John. This Bayou is a back door of sorts to the Gulf of Mexico. Munson Tim Chauvin of New Orleans Walks Walking Tours explains how this waterway shaped the location of New Orleans on the Mississippi River. Along the Bayou, you can also see the Pitot House, one of the oldest houses in New Orleans

    My grandma grew up in the Pitot house along that bayou. Thanks for sharing the history of the area, enjoyed it!

      I was just wondering, how did your grandma grow up in the Pitot house if it’s been owned by organizations for the past 120 years? My family is the Fontenelle family that lived directly across the bayou from the Pitot house.
