- As I passed by this ZX2 in a prior video, one viewer noticed it and pointed out that I had just passed a very rare S/R model. I did a little research and turned out that this is indeed a pretty rare junkyard find, albeit probably not very valuable. Watch in a decade or it will become highly desirable and here one sat in a junkyard while not in bad shape. The interior as well as exterior have held up decently. Under the hood everything seemed to be too there also. Unfortunately there just isn't much interest in these even though they have some goodies that can be swapped. But how many people are still into Ford Escorts, that's the question.

Rare car in a very rare color. It looks nice enough to save, but people likely won’t appreciate them for another 10 years or so.
Thanks for making this video. I know these cars well because I used to work at a Ford dealership when these came out and I had a black one. They came in three colors yellow, black and red. You can spot the S/R model by the sticker on the side, or by the wheels. They also had a Borla muffler with a big chrome exaust tip. They have polyurethane bushings, stiff Eibach Lowering Springs , they handle really well and are fun to drive. Also notice the 150 mph speedometer. I had mine up to 140 and it had some left but I had to slow down. Sad to see this in they yard , if I could I would buy it and fix it up. I hope somebody saves it if its not to late.
Yea it's not even that beat up. Little rust, little neglect, good paint, and low millage for the years.
I have 1 of the 500 S/R in red …. Just sits in my garage now. Un molested

Yup, "rare" but not valuable. Centroplex Ford was located at 2201 East Rancier Killeen, TX. Today, it's Caliber Collision. The ZX-2 S/R was offered in 1999 and 2000 and this is one of 1,000 cars made in Yellow for 2000. There were 500 black ones and 500 red ones for the 2000 model year. Why was it junked? Because that's what it is......LOL. They were made to compete with the small "pocket rockets" coming from Japan and the other manufacturers.
Correct, Tokico struts, Eibach springs, B&M shifter, Rousch or Iceman intake, Centerforce clutch were some of the aftermarket parts. Some were made to be installed at the dealership. The blue valve cover is unique to the ZX-2 S/R.
We got the VIN, we win: 3FA for Mexico made Ford passenger car, K for active belts and second-generation driver and passenger air bags, P11 for Escort ZX-2 two door coupe, 3 for 2.0L DOHC four-cylinder engine with EFI, X is a check digit, Y for the 2000 model year, R for Hermosillo, Mexico assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Hermosillo facility opened in 1986 and still operates today.
We got the tag, we can brag: B7 for Zinc Yellow exterior paint, A for four-wheel disc brakes, JW for Gray/Midnight black interior trim, H for AM-FM electronic radio with cassette, 4T for 4.10 front final drive ratio, W for five speed manual transmission, and 52 for Dallas, TX sales district.
Whoa Nelley, ZX-2 and it's through. S/R not going very far. Made in Mexico and gotta go. Five speed is in need. Motorcraft needs a life raft. Assembled with parts made in Japan and ready for the trash can. That's it, time to quit. Going to be flat and that's that. VIN code "Y" and going bye-bye. "They call me Mello Yellow and I'm just wild about saffron" and this one is a real put on. Going to get squished and only a select few here, maybe not Benny, but certainly not the Google Man are going to be pissed.
The yellow color does seem to be more common, I saw one on still on the road a few months ago.

I'm glad you made a featured video of this, it's such a *WASTE* of a good car. Heck, it should participate at a dirt track derby race at the bare minimum. A manual Ford Escort is fun in of itself, but this one is extra special.
As soon as Donut Media features a ZX2, prices and demand will go higher. Future classic sports car right here!!!
I had the same car with out the S/R prep, in red. Wonderful car, vey fun to drive. Just couldn't justify keeping it, and I sold it to a guy that needed a fuel saver car. Kick myself every so often for selling it, but I can't keep them all!

Miss my Zinc S/R. Was the most fun car I've ever owned. Got better memories of it than my 2003 Mach1 or 2019 Bullitt.
I remember seeing quite a few of these back in day but I don't recall one in yellow.

I had one in the early 2000's. I loved that car. I also deleted the VCT pit on adjustable cam gears, a Fidanza flywheel,new clutch, header, got rid of the cat and put a o2 dummy sensor and had a retune.
It went high 13's very low 14's and 35mpg at 75 mph . Great car, and was faster than all bolt on NA 4 cylinder cars like the Civic SI , sunfire GT or Z24 cavaliers.
Dont get me wrong, when it cane to your STi and evos they'd kill me but foor what it was it was fast.
I got an SR. Great car. Comes with a borla muffler, drilled and slotted rotors, all black interior, sun roof, ice man air intake, lowered on eibach springs, blue valve cover, all from factory. I have mine wrapped, tinted at 5%, straight piped, sitting on 17s it looks and sounds amazing
Upgraded ECU and Energy Suspension all around.
Seen and driven a few of the straight zR models. I never saw this though. That engine is special.
Yesss, I own a regular ZX2, sadly not S/R but love it
It was easily upgradeable to what the S/R had and better.
This particular had 145 horse power as opposed to the regular Escort which had 130 horse power, thus the special add -ons by factory !
Ford was so sloppy with the camshaft timing at the factory that the regular ZX2 and also the S/R varied in horsepower a bit. Also it seems that different engine management programming versions made the horsepower vary. I've seen several different stock ZX2s of the same year dynoed on the same dyno on the same day vary by as much as 9 or 10 HP at the wheels between the highest and lowest one.
Had 3 regular ZX2s and LOVED them! 99 Cool, 99 Sport, and 03 base. I’d love to have an S/R but will probably never find one.

My first brand new car was identical to this one, down to the crank windows. LOL! It was a 2000 model year. It had 6 miles when I got to drive it off the showroom floor. For that year they produced 1,000 yellow ones, 500 red ones, and 500 black ones. Yes, Ford put a bunch of aftermarket parts on it. Borla exhaust, Iceman intake, Brembo brakes, Eibach struts/shocks, racing clutch with some kind of special short throw shifter, special badging and wheels, and a few other things that I can't remember. The wheels were 15 or 16 inch with wide low profile tires. I never really was a fan of the wheels though, thought they looked like pie pans. Was a great car, reliable, economical, and quick ASF!
Lots of cars are misdiagnosed by so called mechanics. Then parked in junk yards.

People who are hurting financially will also sell them to junk yards instead of having them fixed.
Especially this car. It is sickeningly easy to work on, sickeningly simple, lightweight, good power to weight ratio and very tunable.
Last year they made these was for 2000 model Year. I had a 2001 ZX2 built in 2000 and had missed they cut off for the 2000 model year.
My ZX2 went over 200k miles on original engine & transmission.
As aperson who owned '98 Zx2, the engine was solid but the something snapped in the transmission. The car made it to 418k miles.
I have all the parts to convert to rear disk on mine it has ben 8 years maby 1 day i will get it back on the road . I have only seen 2 of thes in person .the paint and disk brakes wer the big giveaways 👍
What a shame , looks pretty well rust free (frame rales , floors, and rear wheel archs on the body all look mint) I'm kinda surprised to see a car of this year on your channel , but I understand.. I also appreciate you filming all of these different cars.

My wife and I had a 2000 Ford Focus ZX-3 two door hatchback as a second car. I assumed that the Escort went extinct at the turn of the century, but I guess there was some overlap.

I grabbed the intake, ecu and the cluster. Tried to get the shifter but couldn't. Can't remember why I couldn't. Sold the intake and ecu. Still have the cluster

The wheels might be the thing. They're small so they wouldn't ship too bad. If a guy needed one where's he going to find one?

Whoever junked it was an idiot. Buy the whole thing. Put it back together. Clean it up and fix it up and flip it for $20,000. It's one of the rare 90s cars that everyone wanted. Civic Si and Integra GSR beater.

I went to undergraduate college with a girl that drove a yellow Chevrolet Beretta. It looked like a banana. She was a friend of a girl I was dating at the time. Both were attractive. My girlfriend's parents had a 1971 Monte Carlo with 20,000 original miles when it got hit and totaled. She was driving a 1986 Buick Somerset that she got from her cousin. I was driving it one day and she freaked out when the dash board blanked out. I slapped it with my hand and it came back on and I continued driving. My cousin had one new in 1985 and they stole the dashboard. LOL.

@@garymckee8857 My mother got a brand new either 88 or 89 Beretta GTU back in the day. It was black with the ground effects, sawblade wheels, sunroof, digital dash, with gray interior. It was a good car for her, very reliable and pretty fast too. She had it only a couple of months and pulled in a parking space and tore the front spoiler completely off on the concrete stop! My dad just about crapped a brick! The insurance fixed it of course and my sister ended up blowing it up. Ran over something in the road and busted the oil pan. I can't imagine all of the warning lights and noises that were going off but she drove it completely home instead of pulling over and turning the car off. My Mom was furious needless to say.

Sure, it wouldn't beat a Camaro or Supra in a straight line race back in 1999, but Motor Trend was impressed. Motor Trend said when they tested it, it was faster than the Probe GT and Taurus SHO in a straight line and was faster through their slalom test than the Corvette of the same model year.
