Hey, Mr. Kilmer. I have a question, if you could help me. I have a 2005 3.3L Dodge Grand Caravan. Smoke coming from under the hood, over heats sometimes, coolant leak, heater doesn't work properly, but it will work occasionally. What could be the problem, and would a radiator flush/cleaning help??? I know you're a busy man, but If you could get back to me i would really appreciate it, thank you.
Shock absorbers can also protect timber homes from getting badly damaged. (Earthquake).
Is better when you talk more enthusiastically =)
@@happygolucky6078 just get a new car, we wouldn’t wanna see you up here because of a faulty dodge that you kept because it barely “ran”.
Scotty I am a regular subscriber now for many years. You recommend Akebono brake pads, but I wish you would recommend the double gas shocks that you were speaking of. I know bilsteins are really good shocks and you've mentioned KYB however these only last about 50,000 miles. Honda original equipment shocks last much longer. Is there a shock besides KYB that you can recommend? Also is there a shock that really absorbs bumps and makes the car ride more smoothly than bouncing over and crashing over bumps and Imperfections in the road? I would love to see more information on this topic.
Shock absorbers do not transfer load to the opposite side of the vehicle in a turn. Shock absorbers, more properly called dampers, do one thing and one thing only; they resist/damp suspension movement. This prevents uncontrolled wheel travel due to springs (including tires) storing and releasing energy, and controls vertical body movement.
The suspense was killing me, but the end was really shocking.
But in the end it was a gas
Look at you, strutting around here with the puns
I see what you did there and I like it
I don't understand?

This man has dedicated his life to mechanics. Thank you!
The artist behind these 3D renders is to be commended as well!💯🔥
Love these videos! Some of the greatest informative videos on CZcams.
Scotty you're a treasure trove of automotive knowledge sir. A professor of cars and the mechanisms that make them run. 👍
Absolutely awesome. I thought I knew enough about suspension already - boy was I wrong! Keep them coming Scotty!
Nice work and explanation, Professor Kilmer! Very well done. I like what you're doing with this new style.
You’re normally such a Goofball Scotty, but you proved to me you’re also a science teacher in this video. Thanks for showing the difference between dual and single tube shocks. Finding the best shocks for your ride is always a gamble. Too rough or too soft. It’s always a risk of having to try a couple types to get your personal taste dialed in. I just put KYB ExcelG on my jeep and am already wondering what Bikstein 5100 or KYB Gas A Just would have felt like.
Excellent video - learned a lot. Thanks for all you do for us backyard mechanics.
Great content Scotty. If you get the opportunity to expand on schocks, could you also talk about off-road setups like: progressive springs, long travel setups, remote reservoir shocks, hydraulic bump stops, and also what is involved in maintenance of these more advanced setups? I found these topics to be a bit complex and there is not much information out there where it’s explained in your helpful and straightforward manner. Thanks!
Thank you for a well explained, & consise review on shocks,... learn something new everyday. Rock on Scotty!
Thank you Doctor Scotty you are absolutely fantastic at teaching, I'm glad you decided to become a gifted mechanic instead of using your PhD in an academic setting..we lucked out and you are an incredible teacher
Word. I have learned so much from this channel. I'm a girl. Dad taught me lots of things growing up but I had to pester him to get him to really show me stuff. Dad is a mechanical engineer but can practically build a vehicle. Save for the computer programming stuff he doesn't have a fancy Scotty scanning/programming tool. Scotty keep teaching us. I'm an MD in the US. We are going to start retiring early (I'm 40). Definitely looking into energy engineering. Tesla's system is trash. Learn from the masters while they are still alive!
@@AF_1892 me too I retired early from a line of duty injury as a New York City Firefighter and also as a diesel mechanic of 12 yrs for the county I live in. But I didn't work on cars so it's cool to get up to date info from Scotty and he is why I'm buying a lexus soon so lexus should send him an award because many of his followers bought Toyota or honda because of him
4:14 - 94' Celica GT Four. LEGEND!
I thought Scotty's 94 Celica was RIP. Maybe I misread something. Scotty said it should last forever.
Getting ready to replace my 07 FJ Cruisers shocks and springs. Bilsten 5100 and Old man emu. Another great video Scotty. 👍🏻
Great Video! I love this style! At first I thought you would talk about shock absorbers, then springs, and then struts. As much as I liked this video, all of your suspension shot looked to be struts. I would love to see you explain all of those different components. I know most passenger cars have struts. Trucks have have struts up front but shock absorbers, and springs in the back. Hope you do another video like this that goes more in depth with all suspensions. Great Vid!
Best video regarding shock absorbers, as always Scotty is the best CZcams channel for understanding your vehicle and how it works!
I can guarantee you that about 2% of your average drivers actually replace their shocks every 50K miles!
It's not really needed
lol, how did you come to that ridiculously high figure? I think you forgot a decimal place.
I haven’t replaced my shocks on my car yet, and I’ve had it for over 10 years!😳
@@eleanormassaro5195 Yep. My 2011 Tacoma has carried one ton (2,000) of material many times and shocks are still working....as far as I know. =)
It’s different for every vehicle and what kind of shock. Some shocks don’t last too long while other last a really long time. Just replace them when you notice your car isn’t riding great or bouncing a lot.
I always learn something from your channel. I appreciate it
Thank you Scotty, much Appreciated in all you do 👍
Great video and very informative. I learned something and have been a mechanic for 40+ yrs.
Thank you for this video!! Very helpful!! I did ask a well known guy who restores cars in Utah has a well know tv show what shocks to use when I went to big car event in Los Angeles. He wanted me to talk to his main guy who recommended a German company for 4X4. No complaints. I was going to get the popular Rancho, & told other company has better shock for 4X4 at big 4X4 event. I hope a lot of people see this helping them decide the best shocks for vehicle. Remember never buy one shock also get two.
I love these informative videos Scotty!
Always enjoy your videos Scotty, excellent info and very well done. 😀👍

I changed over to Bilstien gas shocks and struts years ago. Great dampers, very nice ride. Last a long time. My first set started getting a little soft around 100k miles. They can also be rebuilt. They do cost more though. I remember reading Bilstein said it cost them more to make a stem seal than what other manufacturers charged for a whole shock. I thought roll or sway bars transfered energy to the other side of vehicles, not shocks. They just dampen the spring action.
I really like this new format. Second video of Scotty’s I’ve seen of this format.
there's lots more, check the high production playlist on my channel, thanks!

Welcome new person.

Four new Bilstein struts on my 94' Celica. Over 340,000 miles on it and it handles like a Go Cart and rides like a dream.
But does it ride like a cloud? Which is better, a dream or a cloud?
Go team Bilstein ALL the way!!!
Clouds are rough. I flew through them. Turbulence was crazy. Shocking.....

Best Channel for cars ever …
45 years ago took rear shocks off to swap out defective and drove 12 miles to town, sans any rear shocks. Bounced up and down like being on a water bed, felt weird. Bought load helper springs and mounted on stretched out heavy duty shocks. Much better, actually handled better on curved roads.
Nice video, Scotty.. Thanks for the up load..
Yes is different!
There is your opinion, and the pure information!
Thanks!
Always loving it 😍😍😍😍, but really should work on the captions, as it will also help us find these awesome videos in future. ☺️
Awesome video Scotty 👏 Thanks 👍
Shockingly good video Scotty 🍺👍👍

Thank you thank you, thank you Scotty!
Great video as always , Scotty.
Well done Scotty! Beauty about this video it covers any vehicle, not just Murican cars.
last time I was this early Scotty hadn't bought his Toyota Celica yet
It was 1987......
No, but i did.
These videos remind me of old history and discovery shows. Awesome
Thanks for the educational video Scotty! I got hydraulic shocks for my Jeep and I feel I've made a good choice
Great video. Loved the diagrams. Please make these a thing. 🙏🏻
Really great info and the subaru series ! Are a must ! I mean all of them !
nice one .. every driver needs to watch your video at least twice .. Great insight .
That Rally Celica is an absolute beast!
Next to the old UK Top Gear, Scotty's videos on specific subject matters are my favorite auto vids to watch
Watching this video and listening to your amazing explanation, I can’t help but wonder if you were an automotive repair teacher at some point. Excellent video thanks for sharing!
Scotty, these videos are tremendous. The production values are totally professional.
I thought you were going to tell us about the new shocks that are the best, I want the best. I guess my automotive company will tell me. Thanks for your detailed explanation, I am now an engineer and I can become a shock engineer after that detailed information. You're a smart dude Scotty.
The stock shocks we're worn out in a 1979 Oldsmobile I used to own so bad that over a dip in the road it would smack the bottom against ground once maybe even two or three times and was horrible around turns rocking side to side after making a turn. So I replaced them with Monroe Nascar Sensatrac shocks. The out comes was a 100 times better shocks. The dip in the road with new shocks barrely caused the car to move up and down and the car would level out immediately after making a turn. It was a great improvement by far.
Wow such great explanation THANK YOU!
Nice one Scotty 🔥
This video was filled with suspense!!!😱
Thank you for the “shock treatment.” I have come back to reality - I need to change my shocks. Ford 150 - Biilstein from my research. I live in Baja Sur MX and most the roads are NOT flat but they do let you know you are alive. 😀
Scotty I love your ideas I love your your thoughts on working on vehicles please keep up the good work and don't let us down and I won't let you down thank you
excellent .. learning a little more at 76 years old . great video .
Heavy duty shocks also stabilize a vehicle extremely well. Put 4 higher priced Gabriel heavy duty shocks on my Explorer a few years ago and it was like night & day compared to the cheap garbage gas shocks that were in there and it rides real tight with no wandering & with much more stability since they were installed.
So another words it rides a lot rougher because for it to be tighter it must not ride smooth…🤷🏾♂️
@@Wildanimal864. Depends on the road
I'm using KYB gas shocks and despite their low price, they're performance is good.
Yes, but Bilsteins are the way to go.
I had very good performance from my KYB on a previous suv also. Good shocks.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 kyb... 😅😅😅😅
I just found out, that Bilstein hds are made in çhina.
Which one is he even promoting? He doesn't mention any brand?

Love your videos, literally just bought struts for my vehicle that we’re made in China, they sucked, returned them and asked for an stateside manufactured brand…they said all they had was Monroe, I said hell no and went to the dealer for OEM LOL

Very educational, people should consider springing down to their garage and getting them checked.
Another nice CLASS Scotty !!!
Shock test. Go to the bumper of your vehicle. Push down with all your weight and then release the bumper. The car should rise up and stop with no bounce.if the car bounces up and down a couple of times the shocks are worn out.
Excellent tips!
