- Because the coronavirus and social distancing shut down nearly all indoor entertainment venues this summer, going to a drive-in may be just the ticket. Nancy Giles looks into the resurgence of drive-in movie theatres, and their offshoots - projections in parking lots, and screenings on the water.

I love the fact that they're showing the old movies from the 70s like Jaws & Star Wars & older ones as well.Something I want to take my kids(& grand kids) to see,not just for the movies but just for the experience like I had!
ANTIFA & BLM Executed
a American 🇺🇸 last night
In Portland !
It was overheard they got one !!
@Amy Sternheim I can understand.Back then, they showed the big movie 1st,then the 2nd movie, then they showed the 1st movie again,so you could arrive later to watch the 2nd movie 1st,then watch the main movie 2nd.For late nighters if you could stay up.
I saw "Planet of the Apes" in 1968 at a drive in theater..and it was next to a corn field!!! It scared the ( bleep) out of me when the apes were hunting the humans!!! And the close up of that ape on the horse with that rifle...classic!!!!!
I had the same frightening experience seeing "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" at the drive-in. We wore our pj's and brough our pillows with us.
We kids wore PJs to the drive-in so we'd be ready for bed after the show.
2960s- We owned a station wagon so we would put our pajamas on, unzip and lay our sleeping bags down in layers for cushioning and our mom would make a big brown paper bag of popcorn, we would take bowls, and napkins plus Kool-Aid to drink. Many times we fell asleep before the second movie but it was very exciting for us four kids.
I remember in the early 80s Every other Friday or Saturday we was at our local drive in. I miss those days...
Oh how I miss those drive in movie days. Bring it back please!
First drive-in movie memory ---> Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).
I still remember seeing Cheech and Chongs "up in smoke" as the second feature. Dad laughed so hard i thuoght i was going to lose him. Mom and little sis fell asleep in the back seat, probably for the best. I must have been 13. Good family times.
Oh my gosh, I saw up in smoke at the drive in to! Miss those days ☹️
I had a of fun at drive ins. Even the food at the concession stands were good. And some of them even had play ground areas etc for the kids.
They were really special back in the day. It truly was family night for my parents and I.
This is amazing. Covid sucks but at least drive in theatres have been brought back
So many good memory's
I've only started to go to Drive-ins last year and honestly it's now my favorite way to see a movie ... I did go to a pop up one as well ( which was fine ) but I like the real ones much better and would rather support them .
The State Line Drive-In in Elizabethton, Tennessee has been operating for over 50 years. This summer they have shown Smokey and the Bandit, Grease, Days of Thunder, Jaws, and a lot of other old films. Concerts, too. Just wanted to give them a shout out. To all you doubters out there in Comment Land, don't knock it til you try it!
I grew up going 2 the drive-ins as a child. 🎥 I ❤d it❗I wish they still had one in my area.
i have only been to a drive-in movie 'one time' ... saw indiana jones and the temple of doom in Barbados, back in '89 .. to be honest, i'd rather go to a drive-in movie
A local theater is showing Temple of Doom as a drive in movie right now.
I'm 48 and as a kid we were at the drive-in every friday night, thankfully the same drive in is still in business. The wife and I have a time warp once a month
The passion pit! High school in the 70’s, it was awesome. 99 Drive-in, Bakersfield, Ca...
I loved drive-in's as a teen. Great date spot
Loving the pop up drive in at Suffolk Downs in East Boston!
Thank you for doing this! I never understood fully why drive-ins weren't more popular. As a parent you can take a child & they have more wiggle room & can be loud. The price is much better than box theaters as $10 adult near me gets you 2 or 3 shows & kids are cheaper. You have your own space & don't need to worry about others messing it up for you. I am so thrilled drive-ins whether veterans, like Bengie's (near me), or pop-ups are getting the love!
I've been to Bengie's 3 times this summer alone! I live midway between them and the one in Stephens City, VA. Bengie's is the REAL DEAL!
My town of El Paso is currently im the process of making one at a local shopping center. I cant wait to finally experience one and what its like
I'm so grateful for the drive-in within 15 minutes of me!! We have quite few in Tennessee!! Nothing like a drive-in movie!
Rancho Drive In, Euclid Avenue San Diego, right by the 94 highway...was the 1st and last time I remember going to see a movie (4years old I think) station wagon, Mom, Dad and 3 other siblings...Jungle Book was the movie and the most I can remember is the cartoons for the characters for the snacks...☺ but I do remember moving around our big station wagon my Dad in the driver seat, getting the speaker to sit on the window and getting turning on the sound! I was so happy! It was magical...💖
I think it is the best place to go see a movie with small children, when I was little there was a small play ground with swings and children can just be themselves and parents can start teaching them to watch the movie and settle down little by little...
Love the idea!! Bring back drive inns
Remember going inside the trunk of the car with a few other people to get on free.
I remember doing this years ago when the Exorcist played back in the day.
Bel Aire Drive in on Eight Mile Road back around 1974.
Clermont Delux was the best drive-in. Right accross the street from Indiapolis Raceway Park.
Drive-ins are perfect for families, or making out.
We have Bengies Drive in here in Baltimore. 😁
I went with my Mom when I'm younger & now I can take my son! Bengie's is awesome & I love going there, especially with some classic shows.
I went and watched Metallica last night out at our drive in theater. They played in front of alot of drive in theaters last night. Very cool.
That's awesome- I heard a lot of bands doing drive in shows!
I seen it in NJ.
Springfield illinois Route 66 Drive Inn
Have 2 drive-ins where I live. Go once in a while. But the thing I miss the most are the speakers in the window. Radio...just not the same. Lol
Just seen Metallic and Three Days Grace at a Drive-in on Saturday.
My first one was at the Camden NJ, when i was kid.
That looks fun !!!
We still have our drive in theater in Lakeport, California. It does well but closed in the winter cause it is next to Clearlake, and floods. Used the drive in as a drive thru covid shot for the community and it did great.
There's a winery in a local town that has a drive in now. In Central Oregon Columbia River
Y'know, I have a drive-in nearby, and this piece inspired me to check what movie it's running this week... and the bloody place is doing some "Drive-in Designer Purse Bingo" event! No movies!
😳
Grumble, grumble...
😹
My first dive in memory was going to see raiders of the lost ark. The smell of popcorn, beer, weed and exhaust fumes. The sound of the crackling radio. Good times! Pacific twin on Lincoln and Monroe
Great reporting. Who is the interviewer? Top notch.
Wow i really missed Drive ins, im glad its back!
Thank goodness we had our drive in!!! It’s one of the last ones in Texas. Only problem, now you can’t hardly get in. The best kept secret is out 😂. Love your programming! One of the few shows I actually watch ♥️
Great memories taking my girls to the Drive in’s in the 80’s.
AWESOME! Such a great way to get out and do something and still be safe. 👍🏼😎
South Side Drive In Columbus Ohio is open for business!
The first film I remember seeing at a drive-in was the Richard Pryor movie “Greased Lightning”. Other notable films I can remember seeing at a drive-in are E.T., Porkys II, and American Werewolf in London. Last year was the first time since the 1980s what I went to a drive-in. There’s a drive-in in Lake Elmo, MN that I saw the live action “Lion King” movie on. Good stuff.
I love the drive in we went all the time as a kid. They still make me happy
I own so many books on drive in movies, over 100 drive in movie panthletes panthketes...love drive in movies.
I have never been to drive in . I'd love to tho .
I went quite often as a young person had 3 or 4 In my home town! Saginaw,Michigan🎉
To see Casablanca on big screen would be awesome. It been a long time since i went to a drive-in. 40 yrs ago

I’ve had a lot of good times at Shankweiler’s Drive-In. Nice story!!! 🥰
Ive never been to a drive in movie in my life
At 1:54, anyone know where this drive-in is located?
I went to a drive-in a few years before the pandemic hit, then I went again during the pandemic. It's a fun time, if you ever decide to do it.
You gotta go to San Bernardino for the drive-in
Saw Billy Jack College Campus Drive In 1973 San Dieg♥️California
Great story!
I love 💘 them I grew up on them. What really nice is that I live 10 min from one.
I've been doing the Drive-In since I have found they had one 60 miles from my house. Nothing new to me. As a lover of film, I try to catch a movie any way, any chance I can. I hope people learn to appreciate this medium as we are so quick to dismiss things. If you haven't been to a REAL Drive-In, give it a try. I appreciate the urban areas trying their best to create spaces for people to be outside, relaxing, and taking in a movie.
Aww
I love drive in theaters
I have never been to a drive-in... but, frankly i prefer to stay at home with On Demand from Xfinity/Comcast...
This is definitely a silver lining. I always wanted to make out at one of these drive-ins. Finally!
Hope they still on business after all
💗
#SaveTheDriveIns
This is the same with racetracks across the US. Suburban sprawl made it so people didn’t want to hear the race cars and then the land became too valuable.
whats with the pencil behind the ear?
Watched ET @ the drive in. Missed them days
Love drive-in movie theatres
Showboat Drive In Hockley TX
Joe Bob Briggs was right. "The Drive-In will never die."
I went to the drive-in last month to see the Metallica concert
I don’t have a car I don’t know why am I watching this
Hope.
Free Portland double feature..Love and Anarchy followed by Human Centipede.Trucks w/Covid stay home.
Sitting in the car, especially in the summer, is a miserable experience. I don't see these drive ins having lasting appeal once the pandemic is over. Besides the nostalgia factor, they offer nothing.
The "nostalgia factor" is EVERYTHING.
Hated drive ins back in the day....hate em now....no thanks.
LOL I know it is odd, but how there is need for these.
