I was listening to my Booof Wang while I was working and it was dead silent , not a peep from anyone for hours... and then a voice crackled to life "can someone give me a radio check?" . My Booof Wang was in arms reach so I reached for it .. but as fast as a gunslinger from the old west another voice broke the squelch..."Do you have a Callsign? You aren't ALLOWED TO TRANSMIT without a license!!! " it proclaimed loudly, And with that I realized , I just had a close encounter with a Sad Ham!!

I pressed the talk button on accident a week ago . I don't have a license. And I'm noticing cars following me . I'm also getting spam email from random businesses. I also had someone look at me strange at a Taco bell last night. I think they are on to me.

As a licensed ham operator for many years, now that I know the “Roger Beep” annoys sad hams, I will endeavor to turn said beep ON on my 3 UV 5R Chinese-Junk radios.

Just got into radio. I was going through the settings on my UV-K5 and turned the roger beep on... I liked it. Then i found out it piss's off some people... I then decided i will never tern it off, and will enable it on every radio i ever own from now on.
Came here for the radio education…….staying for the civil disobedience.

One time, at band camp, I used my Ham Boof- Wang radio to transmit over the GMRS frequencies because I saw a cute flute player marching in the band formation. "Some people" would label me a common radio criminal, but at least the cute flute player was highly impressed! 💓

I heard a GMRS user a while back in Lubbock Tx (he did use his call sign) using a radio on the 2Meter ham frequency. When one of the local hams confronted him he explained he bought the radio as a GMRS radio and he was simply using the channels programmed into it. About six months later I was in Lubbock again and heard a Ham identify on a GMRS repeater, no one acknowledged him or even keyed up. I have a license for both radio services and found it amusing that the hams were breaking the FCC regs by replying to the GMRS user to 'edjumahcate' him but the GMRS users did what the Hams should have done. With that said people break the rules all the time, but there is a cost. Rules ensure that society functions, when people break the rules society develops problems. When those in power make and/or try to enforce silly rules, people break the rules starting with the silly ones. HOAs are a good example.

If someone tells you to turn off your rodger beep tell then to turn theirs on and see how they like being told what to do.
Years ago, I was at a yard sale, and the guy had some CBs and a ham radio for sale. When I inquired about the ham, he puffed his chest and informed me I could not buy it unless I had an operator's license, falsely claiming it was illegal to own without one. I got a whole BS speech about regulations and the make-believe laws he thought he was enforcing.
Part of me thinks he put it on the yard sale just so he could berate people for asking about it and could later brag to his buddies how he saved the airwaves from potential doom.

Im an admitted jammer after i asked some hams on the radio a simple question and was scolded until hell have it. Now they get to listen to Chewbacca noises.

I saw a story of a guy jamming & the Federal Gov't sent an agent out & they found him using a handheld device right in his truck.
He was fined like $50,000 & would've went after him for like $70,000 but he was cooperative.

I'm commenting before watching this video because I'm smart.
Eyes gots my AE license (with a perfect score), went to the mingle with a local ham club and was told 232 times in under 13 minutes how eyes bought the wrong durn equipment, the wrong durn antenna and how I smelled funny too. Needless to say I retrieved my flame thrower from my vehicle and proceeded to re-educate these sad hams on civility and graciousness.

Owning a frequency is like owning the color blue. Which probably seems absurd except Blue happens to be what we can see and VHF/UHF, etc. happens to be what we can't see... That is all. FCC doesn't own blue nor do they own the colors we can't see.

The roger beep is to keep people from saying "over" every time the transmission is complete. (some people) are jealous due to that $300 play monies from the govt radio does not include such a feature.

Hello. I like watching and learning about the uv-5r. I am a little slow on picking up on some of it. Can you help me out and tell me how to program a 5 digit channel vs a 6 digit. I got the 6 digit no problem. But some of my local scanner channels use a 5 digit. 2 then the dot. Then 3 more.
