Hello. I am new to ham radios. I have started prep for shtf for 3.5 yrs now. I have a disabled husband so being the only woman in my household I have to do most of the prep myself. I bought a set of 2 of these radios in case the cell towers go down. My husband has many health issues. So I've tried prepping for all scenarios. I didn't throw the manual away. But, if you’ll get chirp, you can set them inside the software to graduate 1-10 in a sensible manner so that increasing the squelch number actually increases the squelch. Hope that helps. Without setting this squelch correctly, it is very dangerous. Latest rumor the governor of NM may outlaw these if the squelch isn’t set correctly.

Sure.. it's EASY to tell when you're going uphill. But it's that moment you were blinded by a white light and the next step is an immediate 50' drop. Being a licensed HAM I have no clue on these radios, never did anything after getting my license and enjoy all of your content. You actually got me motivated to start learning more and now I have my GMRS license and Midland MXT400 and now I have the UV5R for our travels.

Thanks for putting out these videos. Great humor. I've been a ham for 2 years and have bought Icom and a Yeasu radios because "that's the type of rigs I should have".
I had previously bought 5-- 82L's beofangs to put in go bags. I have found I still use the beofangs more than the high price units. After listening to you, I ordered 2 5R's. Neat radios, and so far, no one can tell which radio I am talking on.
    Keep up the good work.

The only good use I've found for that alarm is for what I use it for.
I live fairly rural and a couple neighbors are elderly so I got them these radios so if something happens they can get ahold of me like one of the meth heads in the area snooping around or a health issue.
They can call 911 first but that's likely to be a 20 wait for them to arrive often longer out here so while they wait they hit that alarm button and I hear it and go assist them.
I know on the first responders radios if they hit it cops will show up to where they are so it's location tracked somehow. But those radios are expensive and not really available to us mere peasants.
