  • I go over the menu system for the Baofeng UV-5R, show you how how to use the menu system, and I explain what each menu option is and what it does. The menus and options on the Baofeng UV5R are similar to other radios such as BTech, Retevis, Radioddity, and Wouxun - Both ham radios and GMRS radios. Once you know how to use the menus on a Baofeng, you should be able to pick up most other radio and use it's menu system.
CORRECTION! When discussing Menu Option #23, "BCL" - I mis-spoke when I said I like to keep BCL set to "on" - I meant to say that I like to keep it set to OFF. My deepest apologies for letting you down, but after all, I am only human.

I don't have a radio, I'm not a licensed ham, I don't even have the time or money to invest in this life style. Yet I've sat glued to my screen for several hours binge watching because of the high-brow humor, and incredible sarcasm mixed in with such a simplified and easy to understand breakdown of topics even my less then steller mind can comprehend the subject. This channel is pure gold.

Thanks to this channel I finally learned how to program my local repeater and other repeaters into my uv5r. Also, did you know the ISS (international space station)transmits on frequency 145.80 MHz and receives signals at either 144.49 or 145.20 MHz, depending on its orbital location. You can pick it up in your uv5r but you need to download the ISS app to track when is passing by your zone.

I just ordered a Beofeng UV5R and should have it tomorrow. The problem, I have no idea what to do with it. Mostly I wanted it for SHTF but I still have to know how to program the dam thing. This helped and I found a few other videos of yours that helped a lot as well. As for the haters, BITE ME, I think your videos rock and they are funny as shit :)

Thank you Randy for listening. While "Ask Randy" was all about questions, I'm greatful you read those like mine and others, which were not.
I just bought my first GMRS radio after watching your video on the Baofeng UV-9G. (Way back when) When it showed up earlier the expected I was like Wow! - how do I use it with out reading the instruction manual. Which makes no sense to me as a newbie! Heck just "Ask Randy"..🤣
Now it's all starting to make sense! Thank you so much for the walk through set up....etc. I'm one step closer to having a clue.
Thank you for making entertaining content. In the last week we've seen some of our larger 200 & 500 k YT channels delete or not even post based on negative comments. Never easy no matter what size your channel is. Just happy you put such a positive smiling poke at those that come at you. We need more of that. Life's to short to be negative. We have to much of that going on in the world and US right now. We don't need any more!
Thank you again I can't repeat that enough. Even if I can't do it yet on my UV-9G. I can in this comment. THANK YOU!!! Thank You, thank you..

Best Baofeng menu description video I’ve seen. However, at about 20.02 minutes there is an error. SFT-D is the direction of the shift, + or - (up or down). The Offset is how many kilohertz or megahertz to offset. You need to use both to setup a repeater in VFO or Memory mode. In GMRS, all 8 repeater shifts are the same direction and offset from your receive frequency. In Amateur Radio shifts may be + or - depending on where in the band you are. The offsets vary by band. The 2 meter band offset is 600 kHz and the 70 centimeter band offset is 5 MHz.

Thanks for taking the time to do an excellent video on all the menu settings of the 5R. I bought one recently and I am amazed by the performance of it. As a military communications guy from ages ago, it just stuns me that a radio of that quality can be bought for $25. And don't get me started about SDRs. The modern equivalent of a forty thousand dollar spectrum analyzer from 1990 can now be had for thirty dollars.
I will note that the 5R's squelch setting does absolutely nothing. It is either completely off (0), or slightly on (1-9). This appears to be a firmware issue, and easily corrected. If you know someone at Baofeng, can you please notify them of this embarrassing failure? It's like selling a toaster that only has two settings: slightly warm, or charred.
Please consider for a future show a demonstration and evaluation of that poor man's repeater, that Baofeng cable setup that connects two 5Rs. It is going to blow my ever-loving mind if I can put together a hilltop repeater using a solar panel, a battery, two 5Rs, and a cable for under a hundred dollars.
Do I think the FCC is going to arrest me if I transmit to my neighbor's FRS radio using my 5R? No, I doubt it. I'm guessing the feds have got bigger fish to fry.
And do continue ignoring the sad hams. I likely have pulled more cable than they've seen on spools. They're just jealous, as my mother liked to say. They're jealous that they're still using an R-390 (if they even know what that is.)

Love your videos and sense of humor🤣 The amount of info and support for the Baofeng is amazing. In 2 days I was able to use CHIRP, configure my units and find a couple of repeaters in my area. Mind you I have a good technical background as a car mechanic and IT telecom instructor. This dynamic reminds me of the Harley versus Japanese motorcycles…a couple of years ago I was driving a Vulcan Voyager and for a fraction of the cost it was more comfortable than most Harleys. Those radios get the job done, period. Fun fact: sometimes transmitting will screw up my wireless trackball USB transmitter, forcing me to shut off the mouse and put it back on as a remedy. And yes, I’ve checked the battery and this never happens otherwise.

I do find the Band button quite useful. It can be used to select the Band which the FM radio tunes. Also it can be used in conjunction with PTT key to send 1750Hz tone to activate a repeater. It will also switch quickly between UHF & VHF bands. I note that on my Baofeng UV 10R it does not exist. I am enjoying my latest purchase UV-5RIII a great little radio. I found your explanation of the Menu function very useful. Keep up the good work.

Playing with radios is so much more fun than home repairs. Good luck to you!! I sold my house, my yard, and all my bushes, grass and weeds and moved into an apartment with a door man down in the lobby. Best decision of my entire life.
