  • For this video I got bored and decided to start talking about some of the differences between ham radios and GMRS radios, the difference between the GMRS radio service and the ham radio service and some of the differences between ham and GMRS license. This video should in no way be confused with a video that discusses all of the differences between Amateur radio and GMRS - This video goes over only some of the more important differences between the two radio services. "Important" as determined by me.

2 separate animals... Ham Radio requires intelligence and technical experience. GMRS is a more kid friendly service that only requires a few bux so you can keep in touch with family in a small area. I noticed that your license you show looks NOTHING like any license for GMRS or Amateur Radio I have ever seen. Did you print this from a service or did you make it yourself?

    • @TheNotaRubicon

H.A.M. definitely does NOT require intelligence - licensed H.A.M. operators prove that on my channel everyday with their comments.

I'm surprised that people still want to use radios to communicate when cell phones will do the job. Back in the 60s it made sense to use CB and other services that were available to the general public, because long distance calls were expensive. So I'm curious why you were hoping GMRS could bridge the gap from V.B. to East TN. Do cell phones not work for this? Are they too expensive? Thanks in advance for any reply!

    • @N2YTA

@@terryjwood GMRS users are people who need communications in remote areas, as in the case of off roading. There is some hobby aspect to GMRS, although some say there isn’t, that it’s just a tool. Amateur radio (ham radio), on the other hand, is a hobby. I like the idea of being able to communicate around the world autonomously, without the use of our communications infrastructure, my antenna to the other guy’s antenna.

So I was the one who gave you a hard time about one of your other videos "Should I get a ham radio license"
HOWEVER I will also give you credit for a job well done!
You were respectful and didn't bash ham radio needlessly. You gave pros and cons of both Ham as well as GMRS
(I do support both by the way) and our local club also supports and welcomes GMRS as well.
You go on Ham Radio 2.0 CZcams channel as well as others, and they don't needlessly bash you or GMRS
To me personally, I don't mind poking a little fun at the "Some People" know it all types, but I think in some of your more
recent videos over the past few years, you are giving the impression that MOST Hams are "Sad Hams"
When in reality "Most" hams in the hobby really enjoy radio, and try to be helpful, plus a good number of GMRS users are also hams.
YES Unfortunately a small percentage are "Sad Hams" ... All I ask is you mention a little more often (as you did in older videos)
Its only a few that give the good hams a bad name.

Howdy, I do enjoy your videos and information, though after watching and reading as much content I'm no less understanding the best radio to buy for my purposes. I'm not interested in getting any licenses, I'm not interested in becoming a ham or gmrs operator, I'm not interested in transmitting on any radio, except in the case of an emergency. So.. Can the UV 5R be unlocked or is there any other radio out there that can be fully unlocked to both gmrs, ham and any other frequencies, band width that would be useful in the case of an emergency? There are several radios out there that say they can be unlocked, but does this mean for transmitting? I'd prefer something 8 to 10 watts. I see amazon is selling a new 8 watt UV5R, but from what I'm hearing this radio can no longer be opened up? Any advice here would be appreciated... I'm not so concerned about price though I'll have to weigh that out if the only radio costs a small fortune... Thanks in advance..

The test for a GMRS license is successfully navigating the horrible FCC website to get one.

I have my GMRS ‘licence’ and I am now slowly learning for the Ham licence, so I can contribute to the local emergency response team. Maybe you want to add this to the ‘type’ of people who get into ham. I met a few more lately at a ham folks gathering: all the younger guys (no women) are there for that reason: emergency preparedness, as we are here in an earthquake prone areas, SF Bay Area.
I also know a few people who got into ham some years ago for the ‘GMRS’ life style but did not know about GMRS at the time: could you elaborate on the history of GMRS and when did it become popular?
GMRS is definitely a lot more practical and usable than Ham.

At least once a year you should have a Comment Awards Show. I really try to bring my A Game to the channel as do many of us, and we demand recognition (and merch).
Maybe a trophy shaped like a hand and forearm doing that "insert" position?
Categories for Sadhams and responses, dumbest questions, dumbest sugestions (although clearly mine is a great suggestion and a contender for the best suggestion award this year), and best suggestions. Cheap Merch prizes, or,
I win and you record a very sarcastic outgoing message on my voicemail to cut down on the stupid messages that i often get.

I have a fake Ham license too. I bought the GMRS License and feel pretty stupid for doing so, heck it only transmits a mile. Is that a marijuana plant back in the corner? Enjoying your video's 👍👍

GMRS is a good radio service. It's for the general public who want to be able to use radio to communicate locally. GMRS often ignites an interest in radio in people. Many of these go on to become ham radio operators once they come to realize that GMRS is ham radio lite.
