Dude, I freaking love this channel......
This guy gets it!
Ditto!!!
Bro right?! He's fucking hilarious
I do too i learn alot and love the humor
Your humor makes this blah topic fun
and interesting!! Thank you for going the extra mile for us simple folk ❤️🐞
Your vids are so good and your sense of humor is immortal
I got my Technician license and gmrs! Like both equally!
How long did your GMRS license take to approve? I put mine in this morning and still haven't heard back. I thought GMRS was supposed to just be approved at payment 😕
I agree with your philosophy of use. I would however like to comment on all the... "the ham test is stupid." remarks. The FCC Amateur Radio Tests are for the advancement of the Radio Art. It is to produce an auxiliary of electronics-minded hobbyists that will experiment and advance the technology.
So the test is not geared for people who simply want RF comms.
All the FCC bands of service, serve a specific purpose. One is not better than the other, just a different application. I have been a licensed amateur radio operator for over 25 years and I hold an amateur extra class license, having said that I love the radio hobby and own and operate many non-ham radios and enjoy it. Thank you for your efforts and your videos. :-)
You can identify a lamp in a schematic but you can't figure out 3rd grade punctuation. Which art are you advancing exactly?
This was great. This is the GMRS video I’ve been looking for. I bought the 805G and after reading the manual still had no clue how to use it. Thanks to your video, now I do 🙏
Bro. This past weekend I stumbled across an old Cobra CB. Decided to install it in a vehicle. Thought I’d do a little research on CB’s which led me down a rabbit hole of videos on HAM, HAM LICENSES, HAM TEST PREP, and ultimately GMRS. Just wanted to say I like your videos/channel the best of them all. Your deadpan bare knuckle sense of humor is hilarious. Keep up the good work. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the GMRS License walkthrough! What an amazingly crappy website the FCC operates!
I will also add that the fee is still $70. I paid mine today and look forward to learning more about the GMRS radios, thank you for all your content on the matter!
Casey in Oklahoma!
I got mine yesterday and it's Still $70
@@nimblehealer199 got mine today, still 70$
It's $35 for 10 years now
@@huntsvillecoin yay!!
I just applied for my GMRS license! Yay! It was $70, but I'm ready to buy and use GRMS radios with my family this spring and summer. Thanks Randy!
Thank you so much! Great info. I had NO idea GMRS was a thing. I've ordered 6 radios for my family. Your reviews were key! 2 BF UV5Gs, 2 Tid TD H5, 1 BF UV9G, 1 BTech V1.
Love your videos. You’re our go to source for GMRS info. Entertaining and informative. Keep doing what you do!
Your mannerisms and humor are golden!!
Another awesome video...
Since I have received my GMRS ticket, I have had awesome conversations on the linked repeaters... the best are at 2AM on the way home from wherever.
The regional and National nets can be fun too, depending on the topic.
Just landed on this site. Love the dry humor and subtle sarcasm. Great change of pace while glued to the screen on a rainy day in Puget Sound...
Man I just found this channel and I dig it! Thanks for being a genuine dude and very informative.
Learnt a lot from your video's on GMRS Thank you ... Always a learning curve what ever radio's we use I look forward to getting involved in GMRS
Your beloved (lickable) UV-5R is now available as the UV-5X GMRS, FCC certified. Really enjoy your videos!

What's interesting, is that it says it transmits 12.5khz wide, which means it is not going to take full advantage of the 20KHz allowed.
They didn't engineer the radio for gmrs. They just programmed it, locked it to 12.5khz, and called it good.
@@NSFWHarold I have one, but the third band is kinda low utility in that no one else in our jeep group has it
Man your brilliant and funny. Keep up the good work, I love how you put people in their place.
Hey Randy...
I just wanted to let you know that I have been watching a lot of your shows on the GMRS radios and today I pulled the trigger and bought two Baofeng UV-5X with the extended battery packs...
I can't wait until they arrive....
I enjoy your shows and got a lot of knowledge from them and I also sent my registration in for my GMRS license so I should have my call sign before the radios get here...
Keep up the great contents in your shows...
Butch
Just stumbled onto this, never heard of gmrs. I’ve used and know cb radio, vhf, and walkie talkies. But never understood ham and now gmrs. Thanks always willing to learn something.
Randy the sad ham makes me have outbursts of laughter. I absolutely love this channel 💞 lol I'm a amateur radio license holder. Keep up the great work!
All instructive, valid and well done when it comes to point of view of groups of jeeps off road, overlanding in the west and the west coast. GMRS repeaters though are few and far been on East Coast/Appalachian mountains, and we have to use ham bands most of the time if spread out and in need of repeaters
Merry Christmas Randy and thank you for all your help
I literally never knew all this interesting stuff existed; radios have been a part of my life forever and I never knew what all goes with it
Thank you for these videos they have helped me make a more informed decision on what radio to buy.😊😎
Just did it right now and paid $35. Thanks for the write up!
But you forgot the LINK you FOOL
Your pol won the subscription, as for GMRS this is the first time I have ever heard of GMRS and I am over Fifty.
Very good explanation, Thank you !
You are awesome I am new to gmrs and you are very good at explaining things. Keep up great work
Excellent information for a beginner. Thx Randy!
I stumbled across your videos today. I never laughed so hard in quite sometime. YOU ARE AWESOME! I signed up up for my GMRS license today. can't wait to play. Had the same experience with the Sad Elmers. Still going for a tech anyway. Joke them if they can't take an Effffff.
Thank you soooooo much for the videos, I love the way you transmit... your message. I think you can talk about gray clouds and make it interesting. What a skill! Thanks!!
Don't know ifyou have other subjects on another channel you tube ,but your serious no non sense style is very good..
Love your GMRS videos (and your humor), think I've watched about all of 'em. You can print the license out, just follow the links in the email they send. Suitable for framing? Maybe not. I know you wanted to keep it simple but I wish you'd have mentioned several other things, just to say they are possible. The [much] higher wattage allowed on certain channels, privacy tones, upgradable antennas on HT's, to name a few that deserved at least a passing mention, even in a "GMRS for Dummies" video. Hmmm... Maybe I'm not a dummy. I'll ask my wife, be right back. (Nope, she says you shoulda mentioned 'em.)
Okay, great video. Subscribed!
The GMRS License is still $70. Just got my callsign this morning after applying for it this past Sunday night. Great content and you're the reason why I've gone GMRS instead of the HAM route.
I just payed $70 in the end of October 2021. It doesn't really matter since it lasts for 10 years!
Last day of 2021 and it is still 70$. The price might change tomorrow. :/
@@mazewindstudios255 2022 still $70
You're awesome!! Keep it coming!👌
Short time listener, first time commenter.. Another comment mentioned the UV-5X... any chance of a review in the near future?
PS... your dry humor is finely tuned. Keep it up!
Yes - Very, VERY good chance of a review of it soon!
Noticed the xhamster email address on your GMRS FCC application. You're killing me!! But thanks for the FCC tutorial and all the other info you have provided.
Bought my GMRS license this morning. The govt, in all its infinite glory, Finally lowered the cost to $35. Only took em a year. Wow, they’re so efficient. Makes me so proud. Hey, I’m going to take a chance and encourage you to get your ham license. If this old dumb dog can do it, anyone can. I used the pandemic as an excuse to study for it. Memorized the answers and damm near aced the technician. And if you get your General class license, your IQ automatically jumps 20 points. Haha. (Ducking for cover) Love your channel. Trail Rated!
North GA GMRS has the largest repeater network in the work. 14 out of 20 towers are linked. I love GMRS. I started out with the B-Tech gmrs-v1. All the buttons are a plus to immediately program on the fly. Everyone I've been recruiting i send them to this video.
Another great video. 😁🙏🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💯 Thanks, again!!!
Just applied today, and its still 70 buckaroos. Thank you for the vid!
Zello & GMRSssssssss -Love the vids! Thank you!
Good job, Randy.
Good info. Trying to find GMRS Repeaters near me. It’s funny how people think that a radio was just going to save the day. They think GMRS stands for get me a rescue squad. . I started learning a few months ago and I’m still nervous at radio but I will get there eventually.
Recently got a GMRS license. Looking to have CB, GMRS and HAM in my off road rig. Simply because I am a nerd and enjoy it.
The big advantage over CB is, more than 10 times the output power and you can set up your own repeaters without a lot if hassles. The advantage over ham is, no tests, no band plans, no hassle setting up repeaters, everyone in your family can operate the radios. And there's probably some other points that I missed.
And the noise level, bulky equipment, etc.
Still good to get a ham license imo
@@4seasonsTrucker whoa your the guy he was talking about in the video your the Sad Ham!
@@4seasonsTrucker why? If one isn't using HAM why get the licence?
@@JVRottweilIf I had to guess, it's to gain the radio knowledge garnered by having to pass the test...?
EDIT: I'm guessing due to my lack of having ever even tried for the license. It may also be due to being able to legally use a ham should the occation arise such as an emergency, or an oppertunity you'd otherwise have to pass up at a radio club or fest... ?? Maybe.
Like your videos, saving for a Yaesu 991a have 2 boes,
This is a wonderful explanation and helped me understand why ham is the way to go for the SHTF scenario we are facing imminently. The limitations of GMRS are clearly outlined here and it is appreciated. I have a feeling your videos are going to actually save lives.
Same same
My new favorite channel on CZcams..! Hilarious...

Hello Randy
I am very new to GMRS and I just received my License and a call sign. (thank you for helping me navigate that FCC site) I would be very interested is seeing your set up in your jeep, antenna location type of mounts and were you mounted your radio in your jeep. I have a 2011 JKU and am getting ready to buy and install A Radio and antenna.
Thank you and any help would be appreciated.
Randy S
Thanks again, missing the 🏜
The beginning actually scared me 🤣 My volume was on loud
Thank you for the very informative video. You're a nut.
Hi Randy. I have the KG-935G Radio. I have put in local police frequencies and Transit frequencies but I can see that there is transmission but can't hear any audio. Is there a setting I need to adjust? Thank you in advance.
Purchased my “fishing” license 6-19-21 paid $70. Received my confirmation today 6-22-21.
Awesome stuff here👍👍😎🇺🇸
Thank you for this video. As far as the license process, I filled out the application and it was accepted but I never saw a "payment" page. Now it just say application was submitted?? Any advice on how to pay and complete the process? Thanks
Update for newer people: as of this current day / date (26 MAY 2022), the $35 price is now in effect on the GMRS license. Enjoy!
Great video!!! I loved the jabs at HAMs...and I'm a HAM! We are an odd bunch for sure. Thanks!
HG 905 G is out (Pre-order) Jeep guys are upgrading LOL And still the New Baofeng 5X GMRS! Looking Forward to the Ham Jokes during those video reviews.
I must be a HAPPY HAM. Because, I love your videos! I think you've got SAD HAM's number. I got my HAM license in 1975. The one thing that's always errked me, are those who come off as elitists. Certainly not all by any means. But just enough to kind of ruin it. GMRS is great! There's a feeling of FREEDOM here.
Nice job holding the pinkie out while you sip, yeah I notice these things...lol
@NotaRubiconProductions I just got a radioddity gd-77 and just got my gmrs license but on radioid.net it won’t recognize my call sign. Do you know how to fix this?
Thank you!
I just bought a Baofeng UV-5G which is the GMRS configuration of the UV-5R.
I didn’t realize the length of the wait time to get a GMRS License
Took me about 3 days ... I got mine 2 days ago lol
so i asked my 2 dogs what they thought of the uv5r ..... and it appears 100% of dogs love the uv5r . it seems they also love to listen to the fm broadcast band , while outside playing with their friends .......rumor has it that some people will attach a uv5r to the collar of their dog , so when their dog is outside of their humans voice range , their human can still talk to them and call them back .
What percentage of CATS like that radio?
My cats like to bite the antenna.
Would you get the same range talking on you UV5R?
I just purchased the BTech UV5X3 and the wouxun KG-805 , is there an antenna that you suggest?
Thanks for all the info
The KG-805G comes with antenna tuned for GMRS, so no need to replace it as it works great.. havnt tested the X3 yet, so I dont know what kind of antenna it comes with.. at any rate, a good replacement would be the Nagoya 771G, GMRS antenna
Thank you for teaching this, and other, alt communication means. I would assume in an EMP, that repeaters would also be affected or are they intentionally designed/set up in their own Faraday environment?
Who you going to call Ghost Busters 8:34 😂😂 Just Kidding Randy @NotaRubicon Productions
Thanks Randy
Can you post a video on navigation systems? Or at least what you use , thanks much for all the info!!!
You mean, like this one that I just posted a few weeks ago? czcams.com/video/_17V5AwKqfg/video.html
I would like to request you create a “how to use the Wouxun KG-1000G” detailed explanation for newbies…. Like me!
I have a th 9800 but there are no tutorials on how to work this radio. Maybe you could acquire this radio and make a tutorial..love the channel.
RTFM , as they say
Brilliant 👌
Now we just need a 35 wpm Morse Code test for GMRS to keep out all of the "riff-raff". 🤣
GMRS, radio for the common man. 👍
I applied the other day and got mine at 2am yesterday morning
When the dog/cat poll was mentioned, my hand went for the like. When the ham smacked his head I hit the like and subscribe.
Thanks Randy.....any chance of taking a UV5R and walking through each setting and their relevance or lack thereof in the menu for using GMRS repeaters?

@@TheNotaRubicon I missed that one but just started watching and I think you answered my issue! The only place-by the way-that has mentioned it is your video! The RX is PL and the TX is DPL so I believe its a digital set-up which means I guess I am outta luck on these HT’s for that application. Its been frustrating trying to figure that one out! Thanks a bunch for doing so....
On the UV’s do any of the other settings matter for non-digital repeaters? Like the STE settings?
Thank you so much for all you do!
Newbie here with a pair of Baofang UV5G’s.
Question, please: If I assign the frequency for Channel 1, for example, and save it as Channel 31, would I be able to broadcast off of Channel 31 as it is set to the same frequency as Channel 1, or do legal devices literally limit broadcasting to Channels programmed as 1 through 22?
you can program your custom channels (channel 31) to transmit on any legal GMRS frequency.
The only thing better than the cutest cat in the world, is ANY dog
Hey Randy. I promise I've looked and looked for this info (perhaps you need a made a video about this)... The question is.. I have a couple FRS radios, and a couple old GMRS radios. I work with a local CERT Team, and when we're called out to help do traffic control, we want to use them to communicate. 2 Watts is plenty. Heck, even .5 watts is fine. Soooooo. If we put all the radios on CH 8 (which according to what I've read will automatically only use .5 watts) can we use the radios that have GMRS labels on the front without a license, since we are transmitting at .5 watts? And if necessary, can we move to Channel 5, and as long as we've got the GMRS radios set at 2 watts power level, are the members of my team OK using these GMRS radios without a license? Thanks for all you do to help educate and entertain us.
As I understand the rules, any radio capable of transmitting on GMRS repeater frequencies and/or capable of more than 2 watts of power on GMRS/FRS frequencies are considered GMRS radios and require a GMRS license to operate.
However, it's simply a matter of paying a fee and getting a call sign, so I'd just have all your team get a license. (Maybe wait a few more weeks, then they're only $35/each.)
I was a CB'er since 1968. After the late 70's and 80's CB just went downhill. Too many rude people throwing carriers and broadcasting music an just plain filibustering most of the channels. They went from 23 to 40 channels, then single sideband. Then they started amplifying their rigs to ungodly illegal power, working skip, pretending they are hams without the knowledge. Cb'ers were bragging they were running at 1000 watts with a 5 watt legal limit. CB'ers other than truckers, just got too obnoxious. I just hope GMRS won't de-volve into CB! I'm done with CB! Do the police even monitor channel 9 anymore?
Say what you want about sad hams, but at least they are courteous and respectful of each other.
How many minutes per month do I get with GMRF? Is there any overage cost?
I love cats but I can't eat a whole one.
Canine meat tastes much better than feline.
I hear they taste like chicken... LOL!!!
Thanks
I certainly wish there were GMRS repeaters in the N California Bay Area that were connected to the southwest regional net.
I am here as a new subscriber and GMRS license holder to say, Hi.
Hi
Thanks for watching! Thanks for saying hi! Thanks for subscribing!
Interesting conversation I heard 2/27/21 (462.550 Ventura county). A "GMRS" expert was telling off a new guy who was asking about GMRS. The "expert" stated he would kick off anyone who used the phrase "breaker, breaker," and otherwise ignore them. Randy perhaps you should address this with the new "GMRS" experts. They new guy was just asking questions, attempting to obtain information. Your videos have suggested it is pretty wide open but perhaps GMRS needs standards similar to Ham? What do you think? BTW-I appreciate your videos.
Yah.. Dickheads are everywhere.. I'd be more curious to know how he intended to "kick him off".
@@TheNotaRubicon probably off from his repeater
Question: I was researching GMRS radios on Buy Two Way Radios and noticed a few models (Motorola T100) in their buyer's guide which indicated the model "no longer requires an FCC license to operate". What's up with that? Is there something that limits these models versus other GMRS radios like the KG-805G? Really appreciate your thoughts, maybe a good topic for a video.
The T100 is an FRS radio - limited to 0.5 watts, cant remove/replace the antenna, and cannot connect to/use a repeater.. Very different from a GMRS radio.
@@TheNotaRubicon Thanks for the clarification, I think I got hung up on the product's description that it could operate on GMRS & FRS channels. I appreciate the help.
Once I got used to your face, I love your videos!
Wait! Did you say that you have to announce your call sign when transmitting on a GMRS frequency? I paid the $70 for the GMRS license but I cannot say I was given a call sign.
Go back into the FCC's license manager site, log in with your FRN and Password, and the licenses assigned to you will be there, by callsign. It will be in the format of WXXX123 (a letter W and three more letters, then three numbers). I'm WRJB851 as an example. You can also download an "official authorization" from the site. You should do that and print it out, and keep a copy in your vehicle or with your 4X4 gear, etc, in case you forget the callsign, or to show friends on trail rides so they can see what it looks like and that it really exists .
I love you man 👊💯😂
GMRS great, now I got to buy another radio!
I am a Ham, I am a cat appreciator. Both come down to personal preference for me. Dogs are more practical but I like what I like
That said, I do plan on getting my GMRS license later this week though. Thanks Randy for providing clear and practical information about radio.
Funny!! Great info too thank you
