How to replace Head Gaskets

- On my 1975 Ford 302, I blew a head gasket. So today I'm going to clean up the heads and replace the gaskets.
Step one is draining the radiator. There’s a lot of coolant running through the engine and draining the coolant will save you some of the cleanup.
Step two is removing the distributor, valve covers, and intake manifold. On my 302, I had to remove the valve covers on both sides of the block, then remove my intake manifold to get to the head. There are 12 bolts holding in the intake. You don’t have to remove the distributor, but it’s easier to get the intake out if you do.
After the intake is out of the way, you need to remove the exhaust manifold or headers. I just unbolted these from the head and pushed them out of the way.
At this point, I removed the rockers and push rods to get them out of the way.
Then, you can get to the head. There are four bolts on the top and four on the bottom. I also had a bolt running through from my alternator bracket at the front of the engine.
Since I’m replacing the gaskets, I’m going to go ahead and replace both sides and clean up the heads.
At this point, it would be silly not to clean these up. My plan is to take the heads a part, clean up the valves, send these off to a machine shop to make sure they are flat, then rebuild them. Im also going to clean the carbon from the piston heads and cylinders.
To remove the valves, you will need a valve spring compressor. I rented this one from Oriley’s and it did the job. With all the valve springs removed, I could pull the valves out to clean them up.
I made a mixture of acetone and transmission fluid on a scotch brite pad and a razor to clean most of the heads and valves up.
With everything cleaned up, the last step is valve lapping. I’m using this permatex valve lapping compound and this lapping tool, putting the compound on the edge of the valves and spinning until I hear is spin smooth.
Now that everything is clean, I’ll take my heads to a machine shop to make sure they aren’t warped and clean up my pistons and cylinders.
One thing to do after you clean your pistons and block is to make sure the threads in your head bolts are clean.
The open part of the head gaskets go to the rear of the block and the front is going to be blocked off. The reason is because the front is blocked, forcing the coolant to flow through the back. If you put the head gasket on backwards, the engine will severely over heat.
I’m using ARP fasteners on these heads. Head bolts are something you don’t want to go cheap on and ARP are the best.

You make fixing a blown head gasket look almost fun. 😊
Haha! Thank you!
Back when you can work on an engine in the vehicle, love it 👍😁
That’s right! Replace the heads and don’t even need to pull it out
Hey man, this is Trevor from Ford Fest , impatiently waiting for that post with the Dyno and everything;-) Was nice meeting you man and that ProFlow gets it done!!!
Haha! Hey man, I’m working on it but I have some other projects to get through first
I've done head gaskets without removing the distributor. Can be done. Reinstalling the intake can be a little tricky but,I did it.
You apply the fel pro head gaskets dry?
Nice pornostache!!! :) Seriously, you just made a major and stressful operation look methodical and simple. I know, It actually is, but it's seriously intimidating for someone to think of overhauling cylinder heads by themselves. I also like that you didn't default to a " finished, out of the box, aluminum, edelholley supernice upgrade" and stuck with the old iron heads. ( which gave you a couple hundred thousand miles with no drama) Good tech!!
Haha! Thank you! Everything in me wanted to just go buy aluminum heads and bolt them on.
Nice video John. Is this apart of your Better Bronco series?
Thanks! No, I didn’t go this deep in the Better Bronco series
You didn't talk about setting the head gaskets. On the drivers side its says front and it's up, but on the passenger side would the front be down pointing front?
Yes.
The blue lining would be faced down on passenger side and up on drivers side.
I honestly want to try this...
Do it
I am in Nashville for a few hours. Is there any chance I can meet up and get 1 of your awesome t shirts?
Sorry I missed you. You can order one on nashvilleearlybronco.com
When and how did you discover your head gasket was gone?
Lost power one day pulling into my neighborhood. Then it was running super rough and backfiring
Why do u need to take off rockers
To get the valves out
