Man this helped me out so much. I have my old 302 apart and re assembling. . And forgot which way they went on and mine aren't marked lol. Thank you for this video
Thank you!!!!!! Iv been sitting here for about 45 minutes reading thru the book looking for this answer. I was super hesitant because this is my first time
So glad I found this video, the dang part store sold me a gasket kit that had the word FRONT stamped on the wrong end causing me to install the gaskets backwards.. smh I’m now praying I didn’t ruin my engine
That's really great you're pointing this out because a lot of the newbies rebuilding older engines do it the wrong way especially the old guys rebuilding engines because they finally have a few bucks and they saw the older brothers or parents doing it in the 70s and 80s...
@Myvintageiron7512 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! YOUR VIDEO HERE JUST SAVED MY FORD 302 ENGINE FROM CERTAIN DEATH!!! I built myself a Ford 302 engine w/ aluminum heads a few months ago, wanting to run it in a Mustang next summer. The motor's still sitting on a stand, it's never been fired up. Well, I came across your video here about head gasket orientation last month and decided to pull the heads off of my engine to see if I actually did put the head gaskets on right. Just as I feared though, I put one of my engine's head gaskets on BACKWARDS. So, I ordered 2 new head gaskets (assuming that the old-ish ones shouldn't be reused after being crushed once) and installed them on the engine the right way last weekend. Now, I've got full confidence that my 302 engine won't overheat and destroy itself when I fire it up because of a stupid backwards head gasket. AGAIN, YOUR VIDEO HERE JUST SAVED MY FORD 302 ENGINE FROM CERTAIN DEATH!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
outstanding, dude you are boss ,I screw up in my truck ann paid the price, then again my honest and sincerre thanks from the batterd island of Puerto Rico, god bless dude
thanks for your time you don't even start to know how your vid has helped me. I was pulling my hair out already noticed the front stamped on the gaskets but one had to go towards the back of one side. I torqued it and got to thinking about it and said I gotta be sure it's to risky. I'm a Chevy guy trying to get this fox body build up and going lil shit like this reminds me why I'm not a FORD fan
My son has a 1999 Mercury Cougar with the 2.5 L V-6, it's recently blown a head gasket (or both), and suggestions/information on that particular engine would be helpful to me, also.
We f me. I'm having over heating issues. My edlebrock gaskets didn't say nothing. I haven't got it past 200 I shut it down. My hoses are getting tight af also. Now I'm second guessing my install and going to check and possibly being pulling heads back off. Thank you for the video..
I installed my gasket as you said opening. To the rear this gasket i have had front on both sides. Now my motors not circulating. When thermostat opens top hose gets hot bottom stays cold new pump as well
I know a guy/kid 18 who bought a edobrock intake for a 302 and it had rear water passages (WHY DONT KNOW) but they where block off.... he drill out the flang on intake so water could flow there , he did not understand when i told him about the flow in motor lol was just kid built motor in high school for a 67 4 door galaxy paint flat black :)
Exactly the info I was after. I had the same gaskets that you showed in your vid. It looks weird because one side shows the fiber side up and the other side shows metal inserts when installed....
I thought I had gotten a bad set of gaskets. I just purchased new heads and ARP bolts. I want it done right. I found out the top bolts are not water jacketed while the bottom are so use ARP sealant on water jacketed and their assembly lube on the others. A 3 step torque is also process is also needed too but I knew that.
I'm working on a fuel injected 302 that has a lot of original parts but has been opened at least once because it had some original bearings and some aftermarket and the head gaskets were felpro. I've just spent the last couple of hours cleaning the surface of the block for new gaskets. Graphite is wonderful until you have to clean up afterwards. I'm amazed at all the different prices in "wholesale" aftermarket gaskets and head bolts. I would have thunk rock auto would have been cheaper. Biggest thing I kept running into with RA lately is they're listing pre-85 parts as functional to a roller Siamese bore block. The rings are the 1.5mm not the std. And it's been an acceptable fact that carbon steel is better than iron for awhile but all the hearts were on the stuff that's not even right for 92. Carbon steel rings are generally sold barrel faced for quicker break in whereas the cast iron has a beveled face. But anyway I don't trust Felpro anymore for something as important as a head gasket. There's been WAY too many quality control issues in the last 5 years and alot of complaints. Mahle would have been acceptable to me but I found the original Ford number and looked them up and Ford had the graphite gaskets and the bolts half the price of aftermarket. (Found them on summit even cheaper). Probably this evening I'll hone the cylinders but I might wait until I get an ETA on the rings and bearings. Gaskets will probably be here first. It's amazing some people are still fixated on a certain brand of oil even though everything has changed a jillion times. It's like I'm dealing with 15 year old maturity and subjectivity all the time.
I have a 302 crate motor in a Venom 65 and noticed sludge in the reservoir. the only thing i can think of is when it went in for service they may have put the wrong antifreeze. How will I be able to tell if it is a cracked cylinder head or a bad head gasket or maybe something else?
Question, I have a sbf that was completely rebuilt, stock short block .40 over, with aftermarket aluminum heads and trickflow intake and a ford racing E-303 cam. Everything new from intake to oil pan to water pump.Car ran great for about 20-35 mins than it was super hot? Can’t figure it out.... I just now tore the engine apart thinking the build but the head gasket on backwards, but they weren’t, now I have no clue on what to look at next? Any clue would be greatly appreciated.
Hello..I have watched just about all your videos (and pinged you before..lol) ..Just curious ...do you ever change heads on a Ford 289 or 302 IN CAR? I never seem to find a video on that. I plan to do that and a cam on my 1966 Mustang (restored) and it would be great to see it done ...umm..sort of the hard way...THANKS
Hi there. A restoration facility farmed out the engine rebuild on my 78 302 King Cobra to a racing engine machine shop. It's run hot (and rough) since I got the car back. Made some phone calls to other engine machine shops; they don't work on engines while still installed in customer's cars. Can you please tell me what kind of facility can check for this goof and fix it if necessary? Thank you very much....
You show the head gasket install for the driver side. Will this be the same for the passenger side also? On my dual exhaust on my fox body the driver side muffler is holding paint but the passenger side has cooked the paint off the muffler.
OMG this might be the problem of my car being overheated all time!!, now its engine is at repair shop! :/ Can you please tell, I was always wondering if an used engine block is also must be polished regardless of it's condition prior installing the head gaskets? thanks!
Why does this head gasket have a different face? One side has a small rail type face , then the other side face has a smooth face. So why is there a difference? 1965 Ford Mustang 289 hipo engine! Thank you for any help. .
Hi, I got a question?? Does any one know if I leave my 302 5.0 HO on .030 SIZE pistons and sleeves do i get a heating problem? Really need to know this is really important
i built a Dodge truck engine once i think it was a 340 cid many years ago and the guy said it over heated right after he ran it, he found the head gaskets where on backwards...
Not really just gotta pull the heads I would also have em checked for cracks and warpage and watch this video below it applies to the 289 as well czcams.com/video/v9E1GIvw_zs/video.html
I got the same gaskets as you on my 302 I got one side that when you face them out all you see is the stainless steel rings around the cyinder just like in your video and the other side is all stainless but the water holes are open in the back but the front symbol is faceing down in better words one is upside down and the other is not will it still work
Yup this totally happened to me. My gaskets didn't have any markings on it and you think that the open ports must go towards the water pump. Right? ..... NOPE.
The Buick build is done the only thing left it to fire it up but the customer is not ready to do that yet I will add that when we do it, this link is the last part that is loaded up czcams.com/video/7uv28AdcQmY/video.html
I have a Ford 289 engine from a Mustang I bought in Feb 1966. It has 60K miles on it and has no problems. I want to drop it into my daughter's '66 Mustang. How to I find a shop that can correctly install new hardened valve seats in the heads. We are in Greenville SC and I don't know of a high quality performance machine shop that can do this. Where are you located? :-) Thanks for any help.
Where is your shop located in Phoenix? I'm up in Cave Creek and would like to get some pricing on work. Love your videos and the way you explain what you're doing and why. Thanks
thank you !! i cant seem to find a vid to show how to replace the head gaskets from pull in tot the shop to pull out of the shop and i wanna do it myself just because everyone says i cant.
Man this helped me out so much. I have my old 302 apart and re assembling. . And forgot which way they went on and mine aren't marked lol. Thank you for this video
6yrs later. Exact info I was looking for. Thank you
Thank you!!!!!! Iv been sitting here for about 45 minutes reading thru the book looking for this answer. I was super hesitant because this is my first time
The guys on Vintage Mustang Forum were talking about this last night and I wanted to learn more so I came here, thank you for explaining this !
Was double checking myself on my install for 351 Windsor, thanks for the heads up. Greatly appreciate it!
So glad I found this video, the dang part store sold me a gasket kit that had the word FRONT stamped on the wrong end causing me to install the gaskets backwards.. smh I’m now praying I didn’t ruin my engine

I was having doubts and this video really saved my bacon! Thanks for sharing the useful info!
Im glad I did a quick search on this. Rebuilding my grandpas truck and getting myself acquainted with all aspects
its been so long since i rebuilt any ford engine ,you helped me remember ..thanks
Thanks for the information. I am rebuilding my 302 and would not have thought of this. 👍
Thank you , thank you!! An easy mistake to make and a costly one. Your time and knowledge is greatly appreciated.
Great information that is not covered in other videos. Thank You.

You Bet
what is the purpose of some intake manifolds that allow coolant flow at the rear of the intake and is it beneficial?
Just going to start on mine, didn't know this.ty feel like I owe you about 3000.00 for saving my engine
Oh awesome I'll send you my address

great tip s, can you do on a y block?
thanks I did not know that, specially when the gasket doesn't say "front".

Thank you for helping this fool
will a bad head gasket made my 289 push antifreeze out the overflow tube the motor was bored 60 over
Hey....can you let us know witch way we need to follow to replace the head gasket? steps and torque??
Thanks
thank you i am doing heads on my 302
yeah same xD
I know a guy/kid 18 who bought a edobrock intake for a 302 and it had rear water passages (WHY DONT KNOW) but they where block off.... he drill out the flang on intake so water could flow there , he did not understand when i told him about the flow in motor lol was just kid built motor in high school for a 67 4 door galaxy paint flat black :)
Does this rule also apply to a 2001 Ford Mustang 3.8l ohv v6
Exactly the info I was after. I had the same gaskets that you showed in your vid. It looks weird because one side shows the fiber side up and the other side shows metal inserts when installed....

Do you treat the gasket with any sealer or liquid? Or just install on clean dry surface?
I have a 302 crate motor in a Venom 65 and noticed sludge in the reservoir. the only thing i can think of is when it went in for service they may have put the wrong antifreeze. How will I be able to tell if it is a cracked cylinder head or a bad head gasket or maybe something else?
Thanks! Glad I checked. I saw the "FRONT" on my gasket but the texture made it look upside-down.
Glad it helped
Do you have a video on install heads on a 1995 Ford f150 5.0
Question, I have a sbf that was completely rebuilt, stock short block .40 over, with aftermarket aluminum heads and trickflow intake and a ford racing E-303 cam. 92 Ford F-150 what is that bean can looking thing underneath the hood on the passenger side what is it called with two wires
GM 4.3 similar easy to put in backwards.

Does it matter which side u lay the gasket down cause on mine it says front on both sides
live saver. doing my first ford and this and the positive stop rockers both kinda messed with me
another thing put a highflow lower temp thermostat in it. 180 or lower .todays gaskets donot stand up well under high temp
hey my friend its the same way on the passenger side two right. front blocked and the back open
Yes open gasket holes to the back on both banks
Why wouldn't you want all 4 of the coolant holes to be open instead of blocking the front?
On the other side of the block when you put the gasket on just the satinless side facing outward
I got that same problem did it work for you
Yes it did
Good I been sitting here for an hour trying to decide if I want to use it or not lol
Why does this head gasket have a different face? One side has a small rail type face , then the other side face has a smooth face. So why is there a difference? 1965 Ford Mustang 289 hipo engine! Thank you for any help.
.
I would also like to add to the comments that this is the same for the 3.8 v6 unless stated otherwise
I just reassembled my 302 and now the head gasket is blown ,I'm assuming judging by the white cloud's of exhaust.i obviously fucked something up.
Hi, I got a question?? Does any one know if I leave my 302 5.0 HO on .030 SIZE pistons and sleeves do i get a heating problem? Really need to know this is really important
You turn them upside down to keep heat and pressure against the lid until it seals. That's what my grandmother always said.
i built a Dodge truck engine once i think it was a 340 cid many years ago and the guy said it over heated right after he ran it, he found the head gaskets where on backwards...
66 mustang 289 engine with 60k miles. Any tricks to doing a head gasket replacement on those?
Not really just gotta pull the heads I would also have em checked for cracks and warpage and watch this video below it applies to the 289 as well

Yes
I have the same head gasket does it matter what way they face up as long as you put the holes on the back
nope either side can go up or down as long as holes are in the back they will work
Yup this totally happened to me. My gaskets didn't have any markings on it and you think that the open ports must go towards the water pump. Right? ..... NOPE.
If they say front then that’s correct too.
What happened to the rest of the BuicK build?

i have an 93 e350 its the 5.8l with a blown head gasket is this the same for it or do i need to look for another vid
it's the same
thank you !! i cant seem to find a vid to show how to replace the head gaskets from pull in tot the shop to pull out of the shop and i wanna do it myself just because everyone says i cant.
don't listen to that nonsense of course you can do it yourself there are allot of 351W builds on youtube
I Bored My Stock 302 Ford .60 Over.....Do I Need to get a Larger Head Gasket for that size Bore?????...I have hear different stories
Wonder why its like this?
Looks like something Ford would do alright. If I had to guess that, it would be 50/50 that I would have gotten it backwards.
If 2060 351 Cleveland speed master heads (3v) require special gaskets why is that? Longer studs I understand.
I wouldn't buy speed master heads
yeh one question. wth are you located?
deathcarry ....bummer. I am in orange county ca.
Thanks
