One of the cooler applications is from people who implant a little magnet into their finger. The magnet will move when near a magnetic field, making you sense a magnetic field after a while. people actively use it to detect power wires who are live/active
Yep, definitely a cool one. But then when it comes to getting a scan like an MRI you're a bit screwed
This is so cool! Similar to the doctor feeling the patient's health, I could see it being applied to personal trainers gauging the fitness and fatigue of people they're training, to help create good workout plans and prevent injury. But the options seem endless, I'm eager to see what the future holds
Also eager to see what the future holds for this channel, it's great seeing you back uploading!
That's an interesting idea for sure! There's just a boat load of different applications for this simple interface
"You could get a phantascopic system planted directly on your retinas, just as Bud's sound system lived on his eardrums. You could even get telæsthetics patched into your spinal column at various key vertebrae. But this was said to have its drawbacks: some concerns about long-term nerve damage, plus it was rumoured that hackers for big media companies had figured out a way to get through the defenses that were built into such systems, and run junk advertisements in your peripheral vision (or even spang in the fucking middle) all the time-even when your eyes were closed. Bud knew a guy like that who'd somehow gotten infected with a meme that ran advertisements for roach motels, in Hindi, superimposed on the bottom right-hand corner of his visual field, twenty-four hours a day, until the guy whacked himself."

Well that's horrifying
Love to see Tommo Carroll back with a banging video!!!!
Andy Burgess spotted in the wild of CZcams! Cheers lad!
🐳🐳🐋🐋 I'm all aboard for this pipe dream Tom. Good to see you back!
That's a lot of whales there!
I'm Kind of torn about these kinds of things. On one hand I'm insanely curious and would love to see everything that's possible but on the other I just think not EVERYTHING needs to be known by us. Can't we just pause for a while and enjoy the things we have instead of sprinting past all developments we have and making new ones seemingly every week.
I mean, most people don't even know a fraction of the things that are possible at the moment!
This reminds me of fusion power. Always 30 years away. Well, in this case it's been 5-10 years away for what, 40 years or so. I'm no longer excited by this. Maybe when something out side the lab actually happens that's useful. Till then I'm sure it's still 5-10 years away as always.
the difference is that this already works. i think the common public just doesn’t care enough and due to the lack of demand, companies can’t make these devices cheap enough for anything more than really niche adoption.
@@moontravellerjul Yeah agreed. The difference here is that this product already exists as something anyone can buy (I've purchased one for example). And they've made it open to developers looking to create their own devices to connect with it and experiment with. So it's a little different to the promise of fusion.
Just got this video recommended and i am all aboard this channel now!
That's what I like to hear! Welcome to the ride, this is just the beginning of a new phase

Can we get ads inside our brains played at the whim of the advertiser ? Yes we can, so no thanks

I wouldn't say this idea directly leads to that, but yeah that's a fair point
I love that hoodie! Do you remember where you got it?
would love to know too!
I do! It's actually from a surprisingly crap quality place usually: Urban Outfitters
I’ve actually looked into this prior and it’s just crazy what this could mean for the future

Fascinating topic.
Agreed Tomas!
I tried echolocation, not that much but it seems like I would be able to learn
When did Tom become Tommo 🐋 also, i'd add the "common sense" to myself
Insert astronaut meme: "always has been"

6:50 night vision, so I never stub my toe again.
just use a night vision camera, or a ir camera with a ir flashlight

Isn't our perception limited to what we evolved to perceive? I understand that we could make different senses "accessible", but isn't that a bit like making ultraviolet or infrared light visible? we don't actually see ultraviolet or infrared, we just see the version we designed to translate into our visual perception, not what is "really" out there, nor anything beyond our senses - just a novel version of it - maybe.
the idea is, that after a while you don't percieve he vibrations of the vest on a conscious level anymore, and your brain manages to integrate the data into your perception
@@SkaveRat which doesn't make it a new sense, does it? that's still nociception and always will be.
Which also makes me question how frequently and how long you would need to wear that vest ...
@@JustWojtek Whilst it's definitely not as cut and dry as calling it a new sense, the idea is hijacking the inputs we already have and using the systems already in place to perceive things outside of our normal sensory umwelt, effectively creating new senses. We're using technology to get around our 'sense attachment' limitations. And an interesting idea is that brains have neuroplasticity for the exact reason to allow senses to change and evolve without having to simultaneously evolve brand new brain structures beforehand. It's almost like an inbuilt bit of flexibility for natural selection to experiment with.
@@TommoCarroll thanks for the reply, I appreciate it! Making experiences outside of our senses "accessible" totally makes sense, and is itself a mesmerising idea. I'm not sure about the neuroplasticity part, though (although I don't know). My thinking is: If there is no "need" to develop these particular skills, it might be pretty hard to force this kind of brain development. Evolutionary pressure does not equal conscious effort and changing our brains is not so much an act of willpower for selected areas of our life as an everyday thing, that in big parts escapes our control.
Do you have some sources you could point me to? I'd love to dig a bit more into this

Bro, i've missed you.
I know TikTok can be fun at times but you've got to admit that you have an addiction.
Lets move back to the totally much better platform in every single way which is obviously CZcams.
It has got to be tempting to get back with your ex once you've tasted her lips once more right?
Cheers Timo! Good to be back. Haha, I don't have an addiction, I just built another brand over there that took some time and effort!
