What is the MAJOR change for the 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

- The Corolla has been a compact car standout from Toyota for many years. The hatchback adds extra versatility to the Corolla lineup. Under the hood is a 2.0L inline-4 that is producing 169HP & mated to a CVT transmission. On the outside you will find an all new color, upgraded wheels, and blacked out roof. On the inside you will find more cargo space than last year, comfortable seats, and all the tech you could ask for. What the MAJOR change for the 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

The toyota corolla actually feels like a compact hatchback. So many compacts have gotten so big for better or worse. If your looking for reliability and comfort with a dash of utility, this seems like a good option.
You make the best car review videos. Test drove this today and I'm going to go with it. Going to have to keep watching your videos even though I'm not looking anymore.
I just wish they would add a panoroof, they are perfect for hatchbacks
Not good idea. Not worth it use panaroof Too heavy and lost lot fuel economy.
@@dmitryb1286 whelp the mini has it so Toyota should at least provide the option.

Nice review Joe! It is always said more fun to drive lower powered car at near max than driving higher powered car at lower intensity. Love that you look at ALL cars from economy to luxury.
Buying a new vehicle is so difficult with all these awesome models
Bought one yesterday with the 6 speed. Exactly what I need for a daily driver while still being enjoyable to drive!
What are some good things and bad things with your corrolla? Hows the acceleration?
@@MrChickenspit don't buy this for speed. It's straight up economy but honestly VERY fun to drive. Acceleration will be disappointing to most but you have to understand what you're buying. I came from a Challenger R/T Track Pack, so in comparison the acceleration is extremely disappointing.. but only if my mindset was to buy the Corolla for speed. I didn't. And because of this, it's honestly not bad. Just need to remember that this small engine loves and needs revs to get peppy. It's not a drag racer, so off the line it won't win any races, but once it's going, it'll be fun. My Corolla Hatchback is registered for the SCCA in the H-Street class. It won't be fast, but can and will be FUN (just give it revs).
My only complaint, single complaint, is that the economy Japanese paint is thin. Looks beautiful, cleans nicely, but is thin. Rock chips will inevitably happen, as with any car, but the paint is noticeably thin on these. Clear bra/wrap it if you can, but it's a point to mention. Otherwise I can't complain. I LOVE this car as an economic daily driver that's still nimble and fun.
@@NoelKunz ah ok thanks for replying. The only thing i like about the corolla hatch is the look and the reliability.
@@MrChickenspit two aspects where it will never disappoint
@@NoelKunz what mpg's are you getting with your corolla?

I just went from a 2013 Escape SEL to this, with the manual transmission. I absolutely love it.
Toyota really are making some great looking cars. Never thought I would say those words since Toyota styling has always been a yawn feast.
Started looking at these recently. It’s cool to see a channel based out of where I live. Will check out some more videos for sure.

I agree with you!
Nice review as always Joe. I like this car. If it had a turbo option say 220 hp and panoramic sunroof it would be the shizz, but still you get a lot with this car when you consider nice touches like wireless phone charger etc. Like the trend with sporty interior colors and two tone colors on body and roof. Still wish you’d consider quick night shot add of the leds and running lights. It’s becoming a bit of a look or statement in a lot of cars. Great job 👍
Waiting for the Corolla Cross to come to the USA .

Corolla hatchback seems a great value if you want a hatchback. One bummer is that to get this color, you get forced into the XSE Preffered package , which has a lot of worthless stuff you don't really need for a $2k upcharge.
Thanks for sharing that input and perspective!

The corolla the most reliable car in history. And it has Apple car play and Android auto . Perfect car .
I am so glad that you like this one.
Do you have verifiable facts that the Corolla is the most reliable car in the history of automobiles?
@@ivanlowjones yes I do but I tell you what . Go ask any mechanic out there how reliable corolla are come back to comment section and tell me what they said ok 👌.
@@scaldon2
I don't doubt the Corollas reliability. I wanted to see if you can indeed post proof that it's the most reliable car in the history of automobiles, as you asserted. There have been thousands of car brands and models made worldwide since the early 1900's so that's a very bold statement to make without substantiated proof.
Why would you want Apple carplay or Android auto? It's a completely unnecessary distraction.
So ironic I was looking at one of these at the Dealership today and a 21 TRD Camry
Great work you know more than the salesman

Great review thank you!
Nice car review Raiti very cool looking sporty car. Toyota Corollaa is gold!! If i remember bach in the old days very strong cars Toyota made and again its succesful👌
Love your reviews! Question: Is there a hatch release lever inside the car? This is a deal-breaker for me as I do a lot of "dump it in the trunk" shopping trips these days. Getting out to open the hatch every time...nope, not practical.
Need to know man.!!!
No, you can only open the hatch door manually
I would definitely recommend this car for anyone who needs a small eco car that'll run forever. Some don't like the CVT but it's smooth since it requires no true shifting although in Sport the car does fake shifts. Don't consider anything else except a non 1.5L Civic! Everything else breaks too soon and European cars will cost a fortune to fix when they break!
For 28K no connetivity in the back and no sunroof would possibly be a no sale for me, but like the color, great review as always..
Appreciate the work on these reviews. Wife and I are having a difficult time choosing between a Civic hatchback, the Mazda 3 or this Toyota.
What did she choose?
@@adam-xt8te We went with the Mazda 3, great car with zero regrets.

That is so wonderful James! Thanks for letting me take you back!
I have successfully eaten almost a half a box lol
Now we’re talking. Sharp design. This would make a great electric car.
Another great review and the car is beautiful. The biggest zonk is the infotainment system. They put this huge looking tablet and it just looks out of place like an afterthought. At least on the Honda or blends in and is not blocking your view. Also the car looks fast but it really isn’t. Need more power period.
My friend that infotainment system was placed that way and it was done that way so that you won't take your eyes off the road, thats how easy it is. Im speaking from experience as i own the sedan version of this. Its way easier once you actually sit on the driver's seat then you will appreciate it and it does not even distract you with the driving. Honda has been going down the toilet with their quality, l was initially going to get one before I ended up with toyota corolla. Oil dilution is an issue with 1.5 litre and as for the 2.0 litre especially the LX it lacks some standard features that are found in all toyota trims and no lumbar support in civic as well.
Excellent review as always Joe! I would choose this Corolla over a Civic Si or VW Golf. Could you review a 2021 Chevrolet Spark?
@Jonathan Losito What do you mean?
How do you manage to stay with a straight face through all this :D maybe make a video with bloopers

Hey Joe, in your vid could you also mention your best guess of the car price for Canadian market. We Canadian love your vids ehh!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I will get that together! I appreciate the input!
I have been looking for a gently used vehicle. There aren't many corolla hatchback available. I did happen to see this one in a dealership about 45 minutes from my house. Think I might have to check it out.
Joe, out of all the hot hatches you’ve tested. Which one would you buy?
Mazda 3
Needs a bumper splitter and rods 🤣.. so many mods coming up for this hatchback .. looks good .. 👍👌
We have those as estate/wagons in UK and they are plenty
I hope next year they do a TRD version of this corolla hatchback 🥰
I have gti 7.5 manual. Corolla hatchback is good and would be a serious competitor to gti if performance factor was added
It is coming soon!
I’ve got a Honda Civic and yea this looks good and sounds like a fun daily driver but not feeling the white interior on this specific one.. seats gonna be super dirty really fast.
I saw the special edition at Clearwater Toyota. It looks really mean. But another thing that I will zonk is the arm rest. When someone puts a cup in the back. It gets caught on that lip and causes some splashes..
Thanks for sharing that great input!
Never liked the look of the ordinary hatchbacks. The name “hatchback” sounds low budget. Sportback or fastback sounds so much better. Otherwise this isn’t a bad looking car for the money. Excellent review as always 👍
I’m going to guess that you are rooting for Phil at this week’s MAJOR. 😀
Hey Louis!
I think Europeans would question that statement. I think the best selling body style in Europe is the hatchback. But it would be cool if manufacturers made traditional sedans like the Accord and Camry lift backs. I think what ever manufactures their midsize sedan like that or compact first will get a ton of press and it would bring some people back to the car market instead of getting a CUV. At least I think it would be a good idea. It's my job to say it would or not.
Really thinking of getting this as a second car for city runs
Hey Joe! Great review as always. Love the two tone style though. Btw can you do a review of the Toyota Yaris? If you can get a GR Yaris would be great and it does have a manual transmission! I wanna know your opinion on that one.

Nature valley granola bars are GREAT... also awesome car! Love hatchbacks
I am so glad that I can bring it all to you!
they are candy bars disguised as health food, as is any granola. the healthiest bars would be those with egg whites, dates, and nuts and even those are calorie dense because the water fiber content just isn't there compared to fresh low glycemic fruits and vegetables. i used to be a potbellied cow. i know nutrition very well. those nature valleys are trash.
lol i like how fast you said leave a comment in the comment section. how is that traditional launch gear on the corolla? does it help fly off the line more than others' CVT?

Car looks great 👍 I'd definitely buy this as a first car 😆 the only downside for this car would be it has a CVT, but you get what you pay for 🤷♀️

This hatchback seems pretty low to the ground! How much clearance is there? Would it be a problem with snow or worse, flooding, just curious.
There is about 5.1 inches of ground clearance

Yes! A colored Undisclosed location! Always a good day. 😎😎
Are the wheel 18 inches or 16 inches ? This appears to be similar to the the ZR model in Australia and I bought one in February 2022 the hybrid !
You are right it needs a sunroof and more tech and it should’ve had something in the back for people to charge their phones and to put the cherry on top it should have had a little bit over 200 hp
I like those colourful containers 🙂
Why does the dashboard have to stick put so far?
Anyone complaining about Toyota's CVT (w/ first gear) needs to drive one to experience and comment back here. People who complain here have never driven one for sure haha
This is usually the case!
I never need an SUV for my whole life all I want is a hatchback, even better for a wagon. The Corolla hatchback is definitely the best car I can buy in the US.
I rented a Corolla wagon in Japan from Toyota Rent-A-Car in 2020 and it's perfect! Not a fan of CVT but don't mind having one with Toyota.
we have this model in new Zealand it is called the ZR top of the range .
I imagine how difficult is cleaning this car inside. So many curves everywhere
The front end look kinda cute with a red tongue stick out.
I can see it! LOL
28k is way too much money for a Corolla
Thanks for sharing those thoughts.
I 100% agree although it'll run way longer than comparable cars from GM, Ford, 1.5T Civics, and as specially European cars.
Just go one trim level lower. I paid just under $20,000 (not including my state's sales tax) for my 6-speed SE hatchback earlier this year.
I agree but this car will last you 10+ years. I'm still driving my 2005 Toyota Matrix with over 230k miles. My car drives great with minimal issues.
Looks cool. The pricing is a bit high for what it is though. You can get a decently equipped Crosstrek with AWD for the same price, I live up north so with snow that's a major consideration. I wonder if they plan to make a hybrid version of the Corolla which looks this sporty, I actually might consider one. My ex wife had a new Corolla Sport around 2005 or so. It drove really well, better than my new Camry of the same year, it was one of her better choices. She followed that up with two Scions (XB and XA) that were some of the worst new cars I have ever driven.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.
Hmmm I wonder if he's going to review the 2022 BMW IX Next on his CZcams channel.
Stay tuned!
I got a 2020 and so far I love it just wish it had at least 190hp
A few hundred bucks and you can easily have it reach 190’
The throttle response gets you to 60 in less then 8 second. I'd say between 6.5 an 7 seconds.
The 6 speed can get to 60 at 7.5 the cvt is slower. Over 8 seconds
