- The 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE is part of the 1.6% of cars sold with a manual transmission this year. If you can find one, you're part of an exclusive group of passionate enthusiasts who prefer to row their own.
In this full review we look at how easy it is to drive, interior cargo capacity, engine, handling, ride comfort, infotainment and if the manual is worth considering over the CVT transmission.
This 2021 Corolla hatchback in the XSE trim with manual transmission came out to $25,285 including options and destination fee.

The two percenters :) great presentation Eric, nice to see the final video put together. Save the manuals!
Thanks the helping shoot this!
This is just one step closer to the 1%
I bought a 2020 hatchback this year. In fact, I bought it without even knowing how to drive a manual. Taught myself to drive stick by watching CZcams instructional videos, and then going out and practicing on the car. Can confirm, this car is super easy for beginners. The iMT was already mentioned in this video, which makes downshifting a breeze. But a couple additional things worth noting are the brake hold feature and the electronic parking brake. These take the fear out of rolling backwards. Brake hold is great for smaller inclines. You use the electronic parking brake on steeper hills. Either one of these automatically release once you start moving forward. So, if you're learning to drive the Corolla hatchback, all you need to worry about is the learning how to use the clutch, and which gear to be in. You don't need to worry about rev matching or hill starts.
Thanks for your comment! Glad to hear it's easy to learn on =)
40 years ago, the very first car I bought myself was a manual and I also taught myself. Watched others drive them and it just looked like fun. Been driving manuals ever since. Good for you taking the plunge. Too bad they're phasing out manuals just when you're starting, but you can always look for used in the future. And hopefully the Toyota will last you a long time.
@@MrTrashcan1 Yes, it's really too bad there are fewer and fewer manuals available! No matter the manufacturer, the choices are extremely limited. For example, Toyota only has two models with a manual available, the Corolla and the Tacoma. Well, I suppose there's the 86, but I view that more as a Subaru with a Toyota badge. If the Camry were available in a manual, I would have gotten that. I'm 36 years old, so I'm proof that it's never too late to learn to drive a manual. I really hope manuals never disappear entirely! They're really so much fun, I'm glad I took a risk by buying a car I had no clue how to drive.
just got my corolla manual today, going to be practicing at a hill right by my house tomorrow with the brake hold and parking brake. rolling is my only real concern so far
@@wheresjerz8021 Congratulations on your new car! I got my Corolla in March 2020, and I still love it as much as the day I bought it! You don't need to worry about the car rolling backwards. I've done a ton of hill starts, without ever learning how to do a "real" hill start. In most cases, brake hold is all you need. You only need to do parking brake starts if it's extremely angle, such as a parking garage, or if you live in the mountains. I live in very flat Ohio. The only time I encounter hills is at highway exits. And brake hold is all I've needed to use, I've never have to do a parking brake start.
Thank you Toyota for still keeping the Naturally Aspirated and mating it with a 6spd manual. Hope you guys will still keep us enthusiasts alive for ever.
Honda no longer offers the 6 speed on their sedans. Toyota rocks.
I think these are pretty hard to find unfortunately
Honda accord has manual transmission
@@dgarrido745
It’s discontinued.
@@dgarrido745: unfortunately 2020 is the last year for manual transmission in a Honda Accord and Civic sedan.
Civic Hatchback got manual transmission
And it helps keep people focus on driving instead of other activities.
And they're mechanically simple, reliable and durable. And a clutch (diy labor) is dirt cheap - I've never replaced one before 200k mi. Even if you paid for the labor it's still way cheaper than replacing an AT. And yes, I'm always looking for something else to do when driving an AT - it just feels boring.
I could care less what others choose or why, I just don't like my preferred transmission taken away. Being a Toyota die-hard, I'm relieved they've stuck with the MT.
@@mookiew3051 I agree with you, ever since I got this car in manual I don't touch my phone or get distracted. It's just fun to drive.
You'll lose weight, too. Hard to eat and shift at the same time.
@@MrTrashcan1 lost 45 pounds🤣
100% agree. I've driven a manual for the past 8 years and i recently rented a automatic... my adhd cannot handle it. my mind was wandering from driving too much. i need to stick with manual!
Solid review right here. This car fills the very narrow niche of a sport minded commuter.
That and the folks who just love manual transmission, practical cars.
I think Toyota knocked it out of the park with the styling. The hatch looks great!
I agree!
Yes, save the manuals indeed. I just purchased a 2021 Corolla XSE, 6 speed manual in silver metallic w/a black metallic roof. It looks very cool. Mini Cooperesque. More than adequate power and fabulous milage, on 87 octane. I hope it is more than 2 percent, however. Traded a “hotrod” for the Corolla. A 2012. VW Jetta SportWagen TDI w/a 6 speed TDI double clutch transmission and 80k miles on the odometer. It was an awesome car. But it was starting to cost me. It is German. Not comparable cars for sure, but I am very happy with my decision.

As kids we drove manuals, because that was all you could get, and we cocksurely heel-toed our little cars through the thickest downtown traffic. But then, we grew up...and some of us can't even comfortably lift a leg to push a clutch without knee pain. That's when comfort beats fun.
Thinking of buying one of these as the first new car I've EVER bought.. And it WILL be a manual!

Just the fact that this is a Toyota makes this a very good value for money vehicle. They last forever!

THERE ISN'T MANY GROWN UPS WHEN IT COMES TO CAR REVIEWS.
YOURS WAS MATURE, INFORMATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL!
God bless any car manufacturer that hasn't given up on the manual.
Stay tuned for this Thursday if you like manual hot hatches!
That D4S is what all turbo engines should be running. Until 2 years ago, I was an Audi/VW tech (20 years). We had to do carbon cleanings on the TSI and FSI engines all the time. Good money for the shop, but annoying for the customer. That's why I never bought a Audi/VW of those generations. They also have the timing chain tensioner failures and loss of camshafts due to poor lubrication (cam bridge failures) and HPFP cam followers.
My friends would ask me "I'm looking at an Audi, what should I get?" I'd respond with "get a Toyota".
Thank you for the review.
Even my Honda FD2R still fun to drive until this day.
But damn, toyota still develop those manual transmission's car.
Cool we still get them in a mass market car like this.
I had the 2019 Corolla hatch with CVT. Hated it. Just traded it in for the 2021 manual. LOVE it now. A bit of a long throw but still good. The rev matching feature works nicely.
Im sad, manuals are disappearing, BUT still have FD,94 NSX,91 MR2
Those are great ones to own!
Respect to you my guy. I love Manual
I miss my 2020 Corolla Hatchback 6MT. My first manual. 2500 miles then broke my right shoulder with authority.
Sold it instead of letting her sit for months & months & months.
Might get another in a year or two. Going to see what the GRMN version looks like & costs:)

This car is more fun with the manual than CVT
My Kia Rio 5 is possibly the slowest car I ever had, but being a manual, it's way more fun than I ever expected.
I’m about to hopefully buy an SE hatchback with a manual for myself! Because of 3 reasons: 1. It’s a Toyota, 2. It’s a manual, 3. It won’t murder my insurance bills
Bingo!
automatic - is riding, manual - is driving
Might not be exactly fast but its got about 3 seconds 0-60 on the base engine with cvt. Arguably the most fun you could get under $20k new and with toyota reliability
KPH?
Top model in Australia is the ZR. CVT with 1 gear only. Would love to see a manual in Australia.
Interesting! I’d think it’s the same CVT sold here. It’s quite good.
How interesting i was thinking today since I'm moving from town to a large city and I own a manual mustang im like I need something that has more cargo space and good gas mileage so I thought of a hatchback and here your are with a corolla
I compared the cargo space in the middle of the video. Hope you found it helpful!
I have this car and the trunk space is very limited and extremely disappointing. i go shopping at sams club on a regular basis and maybe half a shopping cart of stuff can barely fit in the trunk. i have removed the cover to access the most space. if you fold down the seats and have maybe just 1 other person you can fit a lot more cause i could fit a 50in tv. but if you are holding 4 people then this car's trunk space will not be for you. Also the height of the car is short so when i bought a baby car seat i could not fit the baby car seat box in the car cause it was just too big.
@Richard Favreau i bought the 2019 hatchback. i am ok with it but it does get annoying sometimes with the limited space. i wished they released the touring version in america that would be a better buy than the regular hatchback.
@@hachiback6018 There are a few other choices in the market with more space. Why did you ultimately choose the Corolla?
RevMatchTV well i relocated to a place i wasnt sure if i will stay or not and til today i am still leaning on leaving here but anyways cause of that I needed a reliable car that wasnt costly. Looking at my options i picked the corolla for style and reliability also took into consideration that it is a J vin built car
The SE sedan in manual is my pick. 5+ inches more rear legroom compared to the hatch made a world of difference for car seats.
@subeyguy66 don’t know if you still read comments 2 years after your post, but about that topic, all Toyota hatchbacks just don’t have the space they used to. The 2006 Matrix that I have has way more rear seat room in the backseat, and I’m 5’8 1/2 and no matter how far back the seat is my knees barely hit it at all, and I got 4 more inches of headroom. The new Corolla doesn’t have that
@@Blakecryderman7244 I had the budget for a gr Corolla but went with the new WRX instead. I need AWD and the need for two car seats. The GR just cannot fit any kind of car seat. Sad as they are really awesome cars.
Excellent work thankyou for your thorough test & explanations
Glad you enjoyed it!
So...the xse hatch comes with JBL audio package and a manual. Quite literally buying mine in blue next week. Can’t wait
I'm researching and trying to find the perfect one
Good fair review, informative .
March 15, 2022 and My inbound to me 2022 Corolla Hatch in White and Standard will be here any day now. Four out of 5 of my Taco trucks over the past 40 years (okay more like 38) have been standard. Awesome.

Just waiting for that GR 4WD version of this.
This car will get to 60 in 7.5 seconds and can do it in second gear. Motortrend tested it and it’s a second faster than the cvt.
Need that extra space in the back for tofu deliveries.
Thank you so much you’re the first review to address the cargo space in the back in depth!
Nice review. What I actually want to know as a potential buyer
Awesome! I was really focusing on what I thought potential purchasers might want to know.
I thought Hawkeye's doing this review!🤣
Put a spare inside a bag that can be removed is better than no spare at all.
A lot of my Support Workers have Autos. I've been teaching them how to use them as a Manual. lol. It's so much better to be able to control when you shift up or down. Especially going uphill. One of my carers has a Yaris. It has no power compared to the steep hill starts here. I've taught her to use her gears and put it into 2nd to start up and get her power.
Cool story bro.
Sounds compelling. This, Mazda 3 MT, Civic MT (not Si), or Veloster MT (not N)? Great video.
A comparison like that would be pretty fun!
Incredibly the Honda Civic SI is priced very similarly to the Corolla XSE but you get a better driving car with a sunroof and a better sounding sound system.
Richard Favreau The perks of buying at higher volumes.
@@carlmanu unfortunately 2020 is the last year for manual transmission in a Honda Accord and Civic sedan and so it is hard to say bye to this wonderful machine ‘Si’.
It’s so sad to see Honda doesn’t offer the Si anymore, it was the best Small sedan in the North American market. Especially it being a Naturally Aspirated 2.0L was one of the best in its segment and that too mated with that 6spd manual was beast of a car.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
2 percent is small but the new car market is so large in the US that it still works out to be a large number of manual cars sold; approx 340k to 350k cars based on 2019 sales totals. And I have no doubt if more cars were available with a manual or if they were on the lot at the time, they would probably opt for it. But a lot of times ppl just settle for what's on the lot. I would like to see more pickups and (since SUVs are super popular now) these new wave of subcompact and compact Crossover/SUVs be available with a manual. We could easily get to 4 or 5% if those two elements were in place.
We'll never see 4-5% again. Manuals are on the way out. They're essentially just for enthusiasts at this point.
@bigdude 5 percent will never happen. Blame the braindeads 😂
Ayo those roads look amazing to drive on
In North America , 80% of vehicles sold in Europe are equipped with a standard transmission.
I can't seem to find the original Edmunds source for the 80% statistic. I think it's too high given what I've read elsewhere. Regardless, manual sales are Europe are vastly higher than the are in North America where I found sources indicating it's 1.6% now.
This is very informative, thank you for making this
crazy a stereo cost so much! i could build an audiophile quality system with actual nice hardware for that cost!!!
I was hoping they named it Trueno again
A long time ago, on a continent far, far away...
i really like this corolla hatchback but i think i’m gonna wait a couple more years for when the GR corolla hatchback is released
I can't believe that a small car like this is criticised for its power which is top class for a 2.0 natural aspirated engine.
You can't really say the naturally aspirated 2 liter that the corolla has is top class when honda released a 200 hp 2 liter of the k20 in the early 2000's.
@@SirBeasty666 That's ridiculous, this is a standard entry model, compare that to a standard entry model 2 litre Honda in 2000, and your quoted engine which had maximum torque at a stratospheric engine speed - so poor drivability characteristic of Hondas in that period! Then there's fuel economy, this engine is far superior than any 2 litre engine from 2000. The measurement is "litre", not "liter" which is a North American bastardisation, and as they do to so many words. I've had five new Hondas from 1980 to 2010, not anymore, they sell overpriced garbage in my country now.
@@martintaper7997 you may call liter the bastardization of litre but we spell it in freedom and use freedom units. However the K series is regarded as the best 4 cylinder engine in history by almost all. You might have had a D series in which you are correct not the best for power and reliability but the 4 cylinder in the e210 is not top of its class by all means.
@@SirBeasty666 No matey, no Honda engine had a thermal efficiency of 40% as this engine has, and all Honda engines had torque deficiencies in that era.
The version you refer to is the high performance range of the K series, the top version of "9" other K series engines with outputs as low as 112kW. The High performance K20A engines max torque is at 6100 to 7000RPM, that is a screamer specialty version for Type R cars only, not a standard engine. If you want to compare that type of engine to the Corolla, you need to compare the same purposed engine, and to today's GR Corolla which is a 1.6 220kW engine.
"Litre" is not your word, it's a French word which other English speaking countries respect in their adoption of the French created international Metric System of measurement, and I'm curious as to why are you not using cubic inches, that's your unit of engine volume, isn't it!
As to freedom, keep kidding yourself, my country has more freedom than yours and is far more democratic. I can even go about my business not expecting to be shot dead in my car or home by a police officer or have my child murdered at school by another kid. You can keep your freedom and dysfunctional language too, I'd never want that sort of freedom, ever.
Actually some manuals still get 1mpg than its automatica counterparts also manuals can hold more speed in the corners.
In the Corolla the mileage is worse. I think that's true for just about every single manual sold in the last couple years now.
I had a 2020 impreza that was recently crushed by a 50 foot tree lol.. I've been looking at some newer Corolla hatches. Seems like a great/reliable replacement.
Pop the clutch, slides, and burnouts. Some of us Manuel swap and some enjoy having full control of the car. I hate the throw away culture and the car manufacturers that are happy to provide. As if I blow a trans a Manuel is cheaper than auto counter parts. Racing culture is on the rise and you nerf world makers are not going to win.
A manual in a RWD car is a thing of beauty =)
@beemer just don't mis-shift. 🤑🤑🤑🤑
Try 0-60 in without using 3rd gear.
Stick and rudder. But for cars. In an age where the auto pilot is engaged immediately after take off.
SAVE THE MANUALS? Because they are more reliable and last longer!!!!
I LOVE driving Manual! They're the best in driving experience. Who really wants to just sit there and drive and do nothing. UGH. Unfortunately, for me, I have to buy Auto. :'( I live in Australia, therefore we drive on the left. The clutch is on the left and I have started developing Osteoarthritis in my left hip. It won't be long before I will be unable to use the clutch at all. Therefore it's better for my hip that I get an Auto. If it were my right hip, I'd definitely buy a Manual. All my past cars have been Manual.
If you want auto then avoid the CVT. Conventional auto is better which Toyota doesn't sell.
See all new gr line up make me wonder will toyota bring back mr2 or new mid engine car.
There are some rumors of an MR2 return. If it does, it's still a ways out. I'll check into this actually.
They say it would be a Nissan GTR an Honda NSX competitor tho.
dear @ revMatchTV, which one is better, vw golf 8 / corolla hatchback in terms of material quality, driving dynamics and transmission efficiency ?
In a tractor trailer I can go from 10th gear (55 mph+) to 6th (15-20 mph) by slowing down to the appropriate speed, rev matching then putting it in the low gear I need. As apposed to down shifting through every gear. However, I like down shifting though the gears for practice, especially under 15 mph all the way down to first gear. Can you downshift like this in a car? A class A truck is the only manual I’ve ever learned. I want a manual car badly and this Corolla is right up my ally! I love the way it looks, plus I LOVE the simplicity of Toyota.
Thank you to anyone that responds!
The gears in a car are spaced MUCH wider than a truck. I don't recall this car exactly, but you're probably in 3rd by 60 mph. You can revmatch as you downshift if that suits your fancy!
@universal energy Allison transmission is the best transmission for big heavy trucks. Allison auto protects your drivetrain and increases your traction off road.
@@revmatchtv So you would be able to go from 4th to first without touching every gear as long as you are at the speed is appropriate for how fast the transmission is turning. Is this right? 🤔
@@universalenergy2311 Unless you slow down considerably before you try to put it into first you're going to over rev the engine. You'll need to be near a complete stop to get it into first.
@@universalenergy2311 if you never got your answer, the answer is yes.
Manufacturers just need to ditch GDI . Go back to port injection only. It works fine
Why? Better fuel control, better economy, less emissions etc. This has proven to be a highly reliable engine.
Pet peeve of car reviews- is this US or Canada?
US
It seems you made a mistake @5:58. The "Enhanced Cargo Package" does NOT come w/ALL XSEs...only w/the 2021 SPECIAL EDITION (only 1500 will be made) that only comes in Supersonic Red. Also, people will gain 6 extra cubic feet (you'll go from 17.8 cu ft to 23.8 cu ft w/the seats up), but the option replaces the spare tire w/a tire repair kit! That's the HUGE flaw in this car...CARGO! Obviously a hatch is NOT an SUV, but Toyota really screwed this up. Look at these numbers (cu ft = seats up/seats down)...Corolla Hatch (NO enhanced cargo...comparing "apples to apples" since all these cars bring a Spare Tire!) 17.8/23.3, Subaru Impreza hatch 20.8/55.3, Honda Civic Sport hatch 22.6/46.2, Honda Civic LX hatch 25.7/46.2, Mazda 3 hatch 20.1/47.1, Hyundai Elantra GT hatch 24.9/55.1 = ALL these cars have more cargo with seats up AND down. Corolla hatchback = useless cargo space!
Enhanced cargo is a free option, but IIRC you need the XSE to get it. Sorry if I misspoke.
@Antonio Alvarado thats because this corolla is using independent rear suspension and that requires space.
I have been musing about buying Corolla Hatchback w/manual transmission just for its legendary simplicity, reliability and longevity. Please tell me why I should consider the iMT now instead of an automatic? Anything more complex is inherently less reliable, IOW, 'too many moving parts' as they say. It seems I might as well choose an automatic. BTW, I DO like the non-turbo, but do NOT like CVT. It now seems Toyota could lose as many prospective buyers in my camp as they pick up with others attracted to this iMT technology. Time will tell re longevity and trouble-free operation. Even Ford has a four cylinder, non turbo platform with a traditional automatic trans. Toyota, say it ain't so.
The CVT is not exciting but it does have an traditional first gear which makes it feel a bit less rubber bandy. Tbh it will be hard to find a manual at a dealer lot.
Amazing now used going for $27k

Getting tired of everyone saying manuals get worse gas mileage. I've owned several including a Golf GTI which far exceeded the EPA mileage estimates. It's all in how you drive. Furthermore the reliability and longevity of the transmission is by far better than any of the automatics made today especially cvts.

Both are good choices. The Corolla isn't fast, but it looks good imho and will probably last forever.
There are plenty of reasons to keep a MT around. I'm in control, it's fun. Plain and simple. Easy to fix. But, why is R left top next to 1rst? Is there an old-fashioned pull up lock on the shifter to get into R?
Japanese cars usually have first next to 1, while German cars are down next to 6. Tradition I guess?

So were you saying 60x37 was the size of the cargo area? I don't care about a bed, but I am trying to do research to find what small vehicles like this can easily hold a manual, fold-up wheelchair. Everything I find is in cubic feet, which is not helpful in my case.
Look up Toyota pressroom on google and you'll find their spec sheets where you can check dimensions (if they have them).
looking to replace my 2003 manual levin corolla with 400ks with another manual car doesn't have to be another toyota
I have a 2019 2.0t manual Accord. Do you think I could live with the loss of power? I love everything about my car but I’m the only one who ever rides in it and it is a lot of wasted space.
It's close to a 90hp difference. Test a drive CVT version and decide.
Needs more power and to dump the boat anchor base engine
The iMT button is optional to use? Meaning, I can drive the car without using the iMT feature? I have been driving manuals all my life. I wasn't sure how the iMT worked. I read the clutch works electronically, and that confused me a little. Can you please explain the iMT feature a little more please? Thank you.
Yes, optional. Just the way it should be. All it does is rev match on downshifts.
@@revmatchtv thank you. I thought you were not able to use the clutch at all. Down shifting is something I learned to do pretty well.
Doesn't a manual transmission cost like $1500 less than automatic on these? I don't understand why people would think it's worth it to buy automatic lol
I have the 2020 XSE and the drop down isnt an option so when putting down the backseats, its flat! Packed the car for 2 for camping and everything fit perfect!
