Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback a GREAT compact car or MISSING something?

  • The Toyota Corolla sedan is one of the best selling cars in the country, and the hatchback takes it to the next level. Under the hood is the tried and true 2.0L inline-4 producing 168 HP & mated to a CVT transmission. It's exterior has very bold lines with gives it a very sporty look. On the inside you will find great fit & finish, plus all the safety tech you expect. Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good Hatchback with great reliability?

Thanks for this detailed review. I bought this exact car (different color) three months ago and I concur with pretty much all your comments. Enjoying the ride every day. The 2020 model does have Android Auto, which is an improvement over 2019 model. The road/tire noise is quite noticeable especially on rougher road, as the cabin is somewhat resonating. Another feature you may want to cover is Remote Connect, where you can use a smartphone app to remotely lock/unlock the car, start the engine, get the car's GPS location, etc.

I bought this car about 2+ weeks ago in blue flame with the black roof. Only yesterday two people stopped me to ask about the car. It really stands out. I wasn't looking for a sporty car, just a car I could easily find in a supermarket parking lot, so I'm not disappointed that the car doesn't have a moon/sun roof. My husband considers it a plus not having them. As for what I've noticed so far: 1) I agree that no outlets in the back is a missed opportunity in a XSE trim, 2) the trunk seems awfully small but I have been able to get all my groceries in it without problems, 3) having a spare tire gives me peace of mind, 4) I like the blind spot monitoring, 5) I wish I could open the "back door" by pulling a lever inside the car or on my key fob. I have muscles but I find opening the "back door" not so easy. I'm hoping with use it will become easier, 6) although the instruction manual implies that I can change my speedometer screen to a digital read out, I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. I find taking my eyes off the road and guessing what my speed is to be distracting. 6) why doesn't the XSE offer a "heads up" display?, 7) You are funny when you talk about stashing your twinkies. I just want a place to easily stash change, cough drops and tissues. The car is designed with no wasted space leaving none of these kinds of easily reached storage spaces. They could have left me two or three inches in the arm rest., 8) so far driving around New England, my gas mileage has been extremely disappointing. I wonder if the car has a break in period and it will improve over time. Lastly, I got a really good deal in Toyota of Nashua. Ask for John Wight and tell him I sent you.

I bought the 2020 XSE in 6-speed manual because I wanted to stay involved with driving a car, and I have loved it. I would have preferred the Sedan, but only the hatchback came in manual, so that pretty much dictated the decision. If I had any suggestions for upgrading the vehicle it would be the following four. Number 1: While it is a compact car, the people sitting in the front pretty much obstruct all the air flow from the A/C, so Toyota should have really considered putting an A/C vent on the backside of the center console. It doesn't have to be directional, but something that's helping to push air to the back spaces would be a plus. Second suggestion: The back center arm rest should have a USB port installed or some type of charging station for the back. It only makes sense in every car on the road today. Especially if you want to appeal to people who might have children or passengers sitting there. The third suggestion, the speakers are a major disappointment, when linking calls or playing music from your phone, since nearly every car these days does so. It seems very muffled and difficult to make out at times. Toyota should really look at improving this area. And the final suggestion is kind of a trivial one, but the gloss black accents scratch very easily, especially those around the cup holders and on the hand holds for the doors. After a time I have noticed in other models that it just starts to look cheap afterwards.
I will say that the only real problem I've noticed with the vehicle. When both my children sit in the back. It causes the car to think that someone is sitting in the center and the dinging that ensues drives me up the wall. The only two ways you have of turning it off, is to either have the armrest down, or if the kids have their book bags the seat-belt has to be buckled. Other then that. I am still very happy with my purchase and have loved driving the car.

This hatch is one of the most sporty - looking modern hatches and I really wish Toyota would make a more sporty model from the factory. Maybe a TRD? If they would stiffen it up a bit, maybe add a turbo or a better N/A motor, add a true functioning exhaust outlet and lower it a bit I would definently buy one. To me this just seems like it has so much more potential, but there's a channel on here called The Speed Academy, last week they just finished a build on a 2020 Corolla Hatch XSE and modded it to make it suitable for the track but still daily great. You should check it out it was only like 4 short episodes but they really hit the nail on the head with the build!

All the economy of the sedan but added utility of the hatchback cargo area. And a bonus is that you can get the high trim level (XSE) without the sunroof which allows enough headroom for tall guys in the front and back. I have owned many new Toyotas, never once disappointed.

I own a 2019 XSE in blue flame thanks to your 2019 review. I love my car but I 100% agree that we need a performance upgrade/TRD. I will trade my 2019 in for a TRD in a heartbeat

Richard Favreau none thus far. I have put on just about 16,500 miles on it and still going strong on factory tires and wheels. I take care of it tho, I don’t drive like a maniac and I pay attention on the road for potholes/obstacles that can really do damage.

Toyota should make the XSE trims with a HP boost. I’d say around 225-250 would be fantastic. Hyundai for example does that with there trims by giving a bigger engine

I actually have one of these on order! A 2020 Corolla hatchback SE manual, with this same silver metallic color. I'm buying it just so I can learn how to drive a manual. I'm going with the SE, because the low-profile tires in the XSE trim are not compatible with our crappy, pothole filled Ohio roads. Fun fact: If the dealership doesn't have the color or trim level of the car you want, they can actually do a factory order with Toyota. You just need to find a non-scummy dealership willing to do it for you. And you have to be patient. The salesman ordered the Corolla for me in early December, but it won't arrive until mid-February.

Good review you said all the right stuff like mentioning about the first gear. How does it launch? because that's the point of that first gear to not stress the CVT belt on launches. Toyota is so amazing with that bit of innovation lol they know what causes failure in CVT and anything else so they bolster the designs in everything. in other cars, its best to baby the CVT theyre not programmed for longevity to reduce the strain on the belt so they will slip and wear out - you have to be the programming that goes easy on the gas pedal. but toyota thinks of everything. that new 2 liter engine is impressive too. It has those extra port injectors, all toyota diret injection engines do to aid in performance and clean those intake valves. that engine also has incresed thermal efficiency up to 40% claimed by toyota. more power and efficiency than their 1.8 Liter. No wonder toyota sells the most cars, they dont cause buyers remorse. they built up their word of mouth reputation over time. 'get a toyota you wont have mechanical issues anytime soon'. but lets hope their new stuff is as sold as the old. i also want to mention a lighter car will cause less wear on everything on the car. ball joints last forever, engine and trans especially dont have as much mass to pull and so less wear, tires and brakes, power steering has less weight to fight with, wheel bearings have less load on them, the springs and dampers. only downside is less comfort with small wheels on a small car but in florida with those roads it doesnt seem to be an issue. if you have bad roads, you might want to consider tires with more side wall on the corolla for comfort and so you dont damage tires and rims and of course being a lighter car that kind of damage also becomes less likely. its hard to go wrong with a corolla. everyone hates those infotainment screens sticking out the way they do but as Joe said its to help keep your eyes on the road more instead of looking lower in the dash.
