- The MK8 Golf R and MK8 GTI didn't come with power fold mirrors in the USA. In this video we install power fold mirrors, and code the power fold mirrors to the car. For this installation the door trim panels on the Golf R will be removed, mirror glass will be removed, mirror caps, and mirror housing. The power fold mirrors will also need to be coded on. ! Is there a way to code the mirrors to fold if you turn the switch while driving?
Hyundai has that functionality and it's really useful for tight space maneuverability.

Do you know if it is possible to change the default drive mode by obdeleven? The golf r is always set the “sport mode” as default and different from the GTI it does not remember the last selection. Thank you very much.
@@georgelaurentiu3106 i guess that feature is automatically enabled after you coded the power folding feature. that's why you need a power folding mirror adjuster
@@n.shiina8798 factory installed power folding mirrors will only fold/unfold if the engine is off afaik
@@georgelaurentiu3106 check your mirror adjuster switch. there should be retract button. all car here that equipped with power folding has retract button
Power Folding Mirrors are a parking lot flex
Really useful for getting out of a car garage though
Its like putting your sunroof on vent when at a Meet or something
Easiest way I’ve found to remove the mirror glass is to push the outer part of the mirror as far in as you can. Then grab the inner part of the glass with at least two or three fingers and it will pop right out. Replacing them with aspherical mirror glass is a must. There’s no reason to not install them.
This job was super easy but your video was great for tips like sliding the door panel up for the outside clip and for the best ways to get the glass off. Watching this did save me having to get new glass.

I got the aspherical mirrors on my 7, love them.
Lol I felt that at the end. Love how the power mirrors fold on my Land Rover just because it tells me whether it's locked or not. Kind of wish my B8 S4 did it as well.
I figured it out. If you follow this video to the T you will end up with 3 clips removed with the door card. The other 2 will remain in the door which need to be removed, reset, and slid back into the door card.
OBD11 was not very effective. The pay model is a bit ridiculous. First told me power fold mirrors are not available with engine on and good open. Figured I’d do the one tap app to support your work. That didn’t work. Waste of $20. Had to manually go thru long coding and adaptions and that worked.
Happy with the result though and appreciate your videos and I learn more about the Golf mk8 platform.
The info was great on the power folding mirrors. I had a problem in the longcoding FAIL OBDEleven contacted me to open the Bonnet (Hood) and that allowed the coding to complete all good.

Seems like a ton of work for folding mirrors. Glad you're happy with it, it would be useful in the city for sure.
Actually I'm messing with the mirrors on my mk6 right now, replaced the mirror control switch but problem persists. Problem being I lost the 'down' direction functionality. Think it may be a wiring issue? I am getting codes back for 'implausible signal' on the mirrors
ITs really not that bad. Id say about an hour or so of install. and maybe 20 min of coding.
Still need to do this to my MK7 GSW.

At 4:42 it seems that a centering post or broke off . Best thing is to remove it before putting the panel back. In certain frequencies they rattle if left in.
Really appreciate your videos. I’m currently stuck on getting the door card back on. I’ve reset the clips as you showed. But just not getting a good seal compared to the driver side door I haven’t touched yet. Do you have a more in depth video on getting the door card back on or have any tips for me? I started at the top inserting into the channel and tried to slide it down. Peaking around the sides to ensure the 3 reset clips are lined up. I give some bonks but they just won’t grab fully. I swore at my car :(

What is the overall width of car with mirrors folded in I’m looking to see if it’s the same as manual folding mirrors because I have have a small garage door I have to fold mine in I worry I’ll eventually snap ‘‘em off but they seem to fold at a lower angle
Added power folding mirrors for golf mk8, but when I adjust the mirror glass i cannot see the side of the car, any suggestions for what to do next would be appreciated.

You could have gone all out and put an auto dimming mirror on the driver side. Can't see if they make one for the passenger side or not. This would require a lot more wire routing though.
The power folding mirrors are now a 1-step app in OBDEleven.

Hey Charles so I’ve done this with my mk7 and installed everything right but I did the coding with Obd11 and all the functions show up in the car but the mirrors nvr fold should I do the coding with vcds instead of the obd11
Or could it be that I installed the wire for the mirror backwards but idk I made sure all was done right just that they don’t fold and I bought them from Paul his Dutch auto parts store 😭 even doe the wires go in one way so I’m just sad they don’t fold when they should but it’s probably bc of the obd11 and I should rather use VCDS RIGHT?

I usually forget to lock my car at home, so I put the keys in my pocket when I get out of the car and press the lock button when I put the keys on the counter. I also never ever take the keys out of my pocket until I don't intend to go back to the car. aka everything removed and doors closed.
At the shop I always press the lock as I drop the keys in my pocket.
If you don't want to forget something at home you must take to work the next day, put it in the fridge with your lunch :D

I'd love to have this but unfortunately above my mechanic pay grade😊. I've learned my limits when it comes to taking off door panels. I guess this is another mod i would need to throw $$ at 😜

No you can just right to “stage2”. But you need hardware to back it up

I wonder why the new models no longer have the beeps for locking / unlocking.... (My Mk 5 has one beep for locking, 2 beeps for unlocking)
(Here (in South Africa) using other remotes to jam the lock signals (to then steal stuff from the car) seems to be a common problem. Making it easier to tell if the car is actually locked probably helps for that as well)
They do. Just need to activate in the car settings. Although, doesn't beep like the audi's, it honks.

Have you thought about painting that silver part on the mirror to color match it? Like blue lol. That would flow nicely with rest of the car! Having silver on that would trigger my OCD !!
Yeah the silver matches nothing on the rest of the car. I think I may just go black with them

That’s weird! In the previous generations here in Mexico the GTI model came with this from the factory. I hope that the MK8 that is built in Germany comes with the same configuration as the other ones.

That's a fun feature... But really I'd like to know how to recode my car to keep the auxiliary power on UNTIL I open the driver's door... and to NOT TURN OFF when I open the door after remote starting my VW.

Is there a way to transfer the Puddle Light "R" that shines on the floor over to these folding mirrors?
The new ones have the R in it as well. We are now finding if you do this on a GTI you should swap the lights over.

OUCH! They can pretty much get any OEM parts, and generally a bit cheaper

Charles, why does a $40k+ VW, and a top halo VW at that, NOT come with power folding mirrors as standard equipment? How hard can it be for VWoA (or VW in general) to install these power mirrors on to the Golf-R? Is this part of the continued cost cutting measures we see in our market, or is it a "we don't want to step on Audi's toes..." measure? Even "People's Cars" need power folding mirrors. Thanks for what you do. .:R
It’s a small car so I’m guessing the “need” in US market is low.

Oh good Q. I haven't looked too deep on MK5. Im sure there is. Some of the older ones required a door module upgrade too. The newer ones have a lot more smarts built in

I also did dumbness last week... I was putting my old truck motor back together and ended up breaking the end of my camshaft by over tightening the nut that holds the chain gear on... so $115 down the drain. Only camshaft for that truck in existence too.

@@HumbleMechanic Push the mirror to the left or right as far as possible. Then on the side that's pointing outwards, you gently pull and it'll come loose. I've done it a bunch of times and it works fine. Alltho not on the mk8. Perhaps they beefed those up.
