      99% of used cars won’t have one. Not that half the info you actually need to properly service the vehicle yourself isn’t in it. Otherwise it would actually be a 1000 page book for ford 1 engine on 1 car on 1 trim package ALONE. Is a few hundred pages worth of info. Now they have to print based off the vin? Not off the car pshh that’s just more money for them to spend. That’s less profit man. They can’t have that.. unpopular opinion. Workshop manuals should be a google search away If you can’t keep customers because they like your car over another and need to keep secrets keeping the industry from innovation you shouldn’t be a company. Yet a good example of this real world. the big three bought out all the smaller brands shelved their good products or raped them to make their own product look better…..Chevy Pontiac ford mercury etc etc “We’re losing out on potential profit let’s buy them out and shelve what they sell10 years later the company’ dissolved entirely.

One time, while resolving some electrical issues, I connected battery terminals wrong way, don't ask me how. Thought that the ecu was definitely cooked, dashboard went black, nothing on it. Had a buddy change the engine oil in his 5 speed escort. He mentioned it only took 2.5 quarts. We were at work and I wasn't paying that much attention when he told me. 5 or 6 weeks later he tells me his clutch went out and locked up the front wheels. Had it towed to a shop and had the clutch replaced. A few months later he brought it over to change the oil at my house. He climbs under and goes to work. I peak under and see red oil draining into the pan. It all finally made sense. I'm amazed that a new clutch was all it took to get it back on the road. I think that was the last time he ever attempted to change his own oil again.

I went down and showed him the oil pan and how to definitely tell which was which. I moved on to another customer and thought nothing of it. 🤦‍♂️ Dude drained the transmission and the idiot working top bay didn’t even check the dipstick after giving the engine a double load of oil. Needless to say the customer returned more pissed off than a Keebler elf demoted to a fudge packer demanding a new transmission.

  • @TheProgGuy
    @TheProgGuy Před měsícem

    I would not say "in his defense," because there are multiple issues here. Many people have mentioned to start filling fluid with the drain plug out. I myself do that every time on a diff or haldex just to flush out whatever is left at the bottom, if there is any sort of metal.
    What most people are leaving out is what the Haldex actually is, which is the mechanism for controlling the torque split between the front and rear axles. It sits between the driveshaft and the rear differential. Removing a drain plug right under an axle is almost always a differential (might be some cases where it isn't but i doubt it). That's just negligence at that point, not taking the time to educate yourself if you're going to do it yourself.
    As with anything DIY, if you dont know what to do or aren't 100% sure or conpentent in yourself, DON'T GUESS. CZcams is a fabulous resource when it comes to vehicle maintenance and a lot of general maintenance items are covered on almost every consumer car, exceptions being low production vehicles like supercars and high end luxury cars.

    Good, bad, or otherwise. I don't know how, but I've gained the habit of leaving off the drain plug out when I go to fill a gear box or engine. I think to flush out any potential contaminants left in the bottom. Once it's coming out clean, I put the plug back in, and fill to the fill plug/recommend amount. But it also happens to prevent this specific situation from happening to me.

    I'm a plumber and not a car mechanic. I did the Gen. 5 Haldex oil change + filter cleaning myself after watching multiple videos on the topic. It's not that hard if you know what to look for. Just do your research first.

    Unbelievable it made it that far. Also, I don't understand why manufacturers put drain plugs for two different fluids so close together. I see it very often in the auto parts I work at. People come in needing CVT fluid because they accidentally drained that when trying to do an oil change

    I’m sure more than a few dealer techs and independents have done this more than once to customer cars by accident. Just more work for them in the end given possible long failure interval.

      It is WAY too common on the Golf 4motion Sportwagens and Alltracks. Many of them grenaded the rear differential or Haldex after the fluid change was done at the dealer.

    That's... not actually the worst user-service-mistake I've seen. I've never touched one of those and I sure wouldn't have thought there would be two different oil reservoirs to deal with in there. Curious.

    Now I understand why some Haldex cases don't have any drain plugs in them. Case-in-point; the Haldex in my Ford Five Hundred. That's two less points of failure...and self-inflicted abuse. Egads that diff looked horrendous!

      Haldex is VW specific, your 500 does not have a haldex. I've worked for both Ford and VW, Ford has no such mechanism (to my knowledge) to control torque split between front and rear differentials.

    Flatmate wanted to change his oil in his 2.2 L Toyota Camry and drained the automatic transmission fluid instead and then added 5 L of motor oil to the motor so now it had no transmission fluid and 10 L of oil in it and he didn't know so he drove it to work the next day and amazingly he's only complaint was a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust because World got all the way through to his muffler and was dripping out the back and everywhere else around the motor seals and is transmission wasn't shifting very well. He realised what he had done and drained 5 L of oil out and filled up the transmission and everything was fine. Similar to this situation the transmission sump and engine sump are up the front of the car and look similar and as he'd never done anything like this before he didn't know any different.. he was very lucky he drives a Toyota

    Having just performed my first ever diff fluid change on my Subaru, hearing that this guy's car ran 9,000 miles before imploding has me shaken. The Subie has a similarly confusing front diff arrangement, so I spent a lot of time in preparation to make sure I got it right. And a few hundred miles later, I was feeling pretty confident that all went well... But did it actually? I guess I'll just have to live in fear and doubt for the next 8,500 miles or so to find out 😅
