Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is Avengers Endgame a decade before Avengers Endgame. And in some sense, it's even better, like with the fact that it manages to create incredible characters and relationships without having tons of prior movies to develop them. How does it manage to build such an amazing ensemble of heroes and villains? In today's Film Perfection, let's find out.

It’s why I believe he would have never stabbed the heart, even after Davy Jones kills his friend he doesn’t do it. Jack does not want to live forever but rather Captain Jack Sparrow wants adventure, rum, and women. He wants to experience as much of the world and life as possible. It’s why he does insane feats despite the risks, why he insists on going out to sea and risking his life despite the danger. It’s what makes him so unpredictable too, he fears for his life but is willing to risk it all, he wants treasure and fame but rarely does he keep it, and he wants to live forever but every chance he gets he throws it away to save the life of someone else.
No wonder no one can predict him, he is constant contradictions with a touch of madness and endless thirst for more. He is true Chaotic Neutral. On no side with his own rules, yet constantly changing and breaking them on a whim.

I haven't realized until now how much "leverage" is essential to the Pirates trilogy.
Jack summed it up so well. "All one needs is the proper leverage."

    • @lineliebst7661

I would say i had not thought on it as who has the leverage, but i understood that someone always has more powerstatus, somekind of information, a weapon or some other thing over the other (in this univers of the three at the time)
Like who is standing right infront of the pistol and who is holding the pistol.
So i saw it as a character/person dinamic from the get go rather than leverage, like you understand its the goverment on the bigger picture but in detail becket is prosuing the pirates to optain the oppetunity for more power over the seas (secure the money rutes), money for his bussines and getting rit of an opstical/nuisance in his way.
Where jack is standing in the way of becket with jack wanting freedom (to sail the world and eksplore its hidden wonders) to not answere to the norms of the goverment/crown (like bringing in the slaves he freeid, since to others they where just cargo, but to him is people)
Those two have different arsenal of cards to play, so in a sense you could say people always has different cards to play compared to others, you just have to play them at the right time and place.
(Saw the 3th film when i was 11, and even then i saw the leverage the characters has over each other, with its not who is the strongest, or has physical avantech over the other, but more about who has the ace over the other)

What I like so much about this movie is that it shows how far the characters have come. So many movies out there have great character progression, only for the sequel to reset that progression for some bullshit reason and redo the journey from the first one again. Here, the characters who used to be nobodies who didn't know how the world worked are now absolute professionals and constantly stab each other in the back, just like they learned it from the characters which were already experienced in the first movie.

The perfect trilogy. It really is. I've loved this trilogy ever since I saw the first 10 minutes of the first movie. It's absolutely a massive credit to the writers that they weaved such an amazing tale and stories across 3 feature films from inspiration taken from a ride at an amusement park. Certainly they pulled from other elements as well, there's fingerprints from many cultures and myths all throughout, but it started because of a goddamn ride. But when they created this amazing world filled with believable characters, despite the supernatural elements, they also created a massive pitfall they would need to avoid. It's incredibly easy to lose sight of what made the first 3 films so epic and all time greats...particularly when it's the studio itself demanding a new film be rushed out as fast as possible without waiting for the passionate writers to pen a new tale. Then you end up with a decrease in quality, that said I still love the 4th movie. The 5th has some good parts, but overall it's just bad. They lost sight of what made the franchise so loved and took shortcuts and made extremely bad decisions...and those that made those decisions actually had no input in the first 3, which is why they were great, because they were focused on the vision of the writers who were invested in telling good and fun stories...instead of focused on shelling the fields of the cinema battleground with rushed munitions designed to be subpar and ineffective overall but served the purpose of buying a little time, or in this case money AND time, they knew the films would do well because of the history...and they needed to release them quickly (time) in order to accrue finances for their own personal hobbyhorse movies filled with bad writing and preachy nonsense. They intentionally ruined the franchises just to make a quick buck.

It's been years since I watched the extra stuff... But from an interview the actor who played ragetti in the second stuck out to me. He said that they were pretty much at the end of a golden age for Hollywood. Even then he could see that less and less practical sets and costumes and locations. These aspects slowly disappearing in favor in favor of simple CGI... that pirates was probably the end of an era.

Beckett is a business man and yet is extremely vindictive. He coldly executes hundreds but will pursue Jack to the ends of the earth, and then cut a deal with him, only to sell him into eternal slavery, and at the end of his world, he accepts it and his death as fair play from a better opponent.

Going with the theme of leverage, I think PotC has way more in common with mystery/detective or those stories where there's no hard power dynamics so most of their "power" comes from their wit and circumstances. It's nothing like the power fantasy we expect from superhero or action epic fantasy movies, cause in those genres, it is somewhat distasteful to use underhanded means to overcome earned power. Although, of course, pure dumb action is... dumb, and having some wit and maneuvering would improve the flavour of the story, it is by no means the focus.
PotC, while having some mythical aspects like Davy Jones and undead pirates, and lumped together with superhero movies, is by no means a superhero movie. Most of the characters there are all regular humans, with nothing super about them, so the way they outplay each other would just be different.
TLDR: characters in PotC actually feel like they're thinking instead of being musclebrains where their brightest ideas usually come from the most obvious places, or made up things that will solve the problem.

And i totally agree. The Pirates movies were entertaining as hell. A fresh wind when things got boring and they still hold up so well. It is good storytelling, good characrs, there is always something happening...two hours pass and you think: what happened? It can't be more than 20 minutes. I need more!

I think that when you elevate the stakes to the heights of At World's End or, say, Return Of The Jedi, it's important to give everyone a window to neutrality. Of course it's epic to have the villain want to destroy the universe or whatever, but it gives the character something better to fight for than just their survival. Becket wants to eradicate piracy, so there is always an option to abandon piracy, but it's not what either of these characters would ever agree with. On the contrary, while Infinity War is a good movie, its not really because of its characters. It doesn't help that they are literally superheroes, but the call to action seems kind of obvious. Like, duh, of course they will stand up to fight a genocidal maniac. In PotC however, characters like Will and Liz often question if what they are doing its worth the consequence.
