The Marvels continues the story of Captain Marvel with two new additions: Miss Marvel and the third hero. Which didn't go too well because the movie became the biggest flop in Marvel's history and got bad reviews as well. And it's because the MCU's problems have grown bigger today than ever before, to the point where Marvel is hurting itself. So, in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's dig into that. Not so sure there will be Captain Marvel 3.

I actually enjoyed The Marvels & felt it was a better film than Eternals, Thor 4, & Ant-Man 3 since the story while not long was fine, it had decent jokes, multiple good fight scenes, & the 3 actresses did a good job together.

Yep, sitcom-level writing is one of the major issues why these are failing. The excessive girl power moments and characters are a problem for some audiences, sure, but they would easily look past that if the movies surrounding these characters were good. Even Thor flopped hard, because they decided to go too far with the cringe joke moments, which evoked groans from even general audiences who usually lap up what Hollywood puts out.

After Multiverse of Madness and Quantumania it was revealed that they literally write the script as the movies are being filmed... And the focus is on making "memeable" scenes, as in: "Let's write this scene so that it may turn into a meme on the internets"

The solution is simple, really: *Start with a FINISHED SCRIPT.*

It's incredibly stupid because Thanos is the most popular MCU meme and it's precisely because all his lines are solid.
This is exactly what James Gunn and DC are doing with their universe. They won't confirm anything, from movies and series, if there's no solid plot and script.
That gives me confidence in the new DCU because we still know exactly what we know about it from last year January aside from an Arkham Asylum series because they aren't announcing a thousand projects at once stuck in development hell like Blade, Fantastic Four, Daredevil: Born Again, etc.
What's hurting these movies is the lack of actual scripts. Not every actor can improv like RDJ and it really shows in The Marvels. The "fix it in post" mentality the studio has isn't helping either.
Yeah the multiverse of madness script wasn't even finished when they started shooting. The writer was having to come up with stuff on the fly just so the actors would have something to do on set that day. It's obvious Disney thinks flashy lights and spamming CGI is all anyone enjoys about movies. Writing has always been the strongest pillar of any movie, so if the writing is completely ignored, the movie has NOTHING. Doesn't matter how much money you spend, no actor and no CGI artist can save a script that's bad, or a script that doesn't even exist.

@@midnightaurora9483 this is what happens when studios hire inexperienced writers who keep rewriting their scripts on the fly during filming instead of giving them a complete script with full confidence in it.
This is why I'm hyped for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU because they said they won't be confirming any new projects if there's no confidence in the vision and script. As compared to the current MCU with Blade, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, etc. being announced years ago and are still in development hell as compared to the DCU which announced part of Chapter 1 last year and has at least 3 projects up and running now.
I remember years and years ago, in discussions about good writing, that there are eight words which - if your audience ever says - means your story is just flat out dead. "I don't care what happens to these people."
The problem is we crossed that line with Marvel years ago, at this point.
Also, the fact that her plan was doomed from the get-go (she puts both bracelets on and dies....) removes all stakes

You missed the most ridiculous part of the movie: The problem of the Kree sun dying was fixed when Prof. Marvel asks Cpt. Marvel "Have you tried using your powers to restart the sun?", and then Cpt. Marvel just casually does it in the dénouement of the movie. She fixes a star by "Turning it off and on again" and the movie treats it as an afterthought.
And just how long was their sun dying before the idea of just restarting it ever occurred to them??
See, that’s an actual valid criticism of the movie. Not all the nonsense you hear from weirdos in these comments, saying that she’s a “villain” who thinks she’s doing everything right, despite her whole arc in the movie revolving around the shame she feels for handling something the wrong way, and trying to undo the damage. Saying that arc could have been done better is valid. Villainizing the whole character? it reveals the real problem these creep chuds have with her.
When was science or even logic the strong side of superhero movies?

@@mattdamutt5681 I find it really hilarious when fans of the superhero genre ignore the ridiculousness of their premise for decades but suddenly remember it when they dislike a movie, sometime even without watching it. Of course the sun thing was ridiculous in The Marvels but for me (a physicist) the energy source of almost everything the superheroes do is equally ridiculous. I watch the genre the way I watch fairy tales, that is without questioning the magic.

I really liked the idea of forcing Captain Marvel to face the consequences of her “I’m going to solve every problem by blowing it up with my nearly-unbeatable powers” schtick. Execution wasn’t great though, kind of a shame cause I really think that was the growth this character needed to become actually good and compelling instead of a faux feminism icon.
They didn't even figure out a different way to beat the villain, she just got stabbed by a falling object and then disintegrated herself. Not like Kamala was right there with the same artifact that she had a deeper connection to and more experience with, and had been hoping for a chance to prove her worth the whole movie.
She needs to be called what she is...the villain...she is a genocide who believes she is doing good, classic villain to believe that they are the saviors...plus this would leave everyone happy, if she is the "bad guy" they kill her In the end, Marvel gets rid of the PR Brie Larson nightmare, the fans who hate Brie are happy....and the fans who love her...well, those don't even go to the movies....so...happy ending.

Yeah, it doesn't work in this case, because what she DID was destroy the malevolent AI trying to commit genocide and manipulate her into being its pawn.
There was fallout from that, but she didn't make them go to war. She didn't' make them wreck their planet. And quite frankly, what any of that has to do with their star is beyond me, so lets just mark that one down to shitty writing.
What was she supposed to do? LET the S.I. keep trying to wipe out the Skrulls and bend her to its weill? Was she just supposed to send it a harshly worded email and hope it listens? JFC.
what good is "character development" when it's at the cost of garbage, shitty writing? at that point it's as if it didn't even happen in my opinion... and that extends to all sorts of media, not just marvel.
One thing I'll mention about most CGI Battles in the MCU (The huge ones with armies and whatnot) is that they honestly don't feel like battles at all. I know that this is nitpicking, but I feel like an army trying to conquer a planet should have more of a plan than to just "Fly around and shoot lasers into stuff"

What's funny is our pop culture concept of "battle" is two army blobs smacking into eachother head-on, but infantry battles have always used strategies and tactics besides just "suicide charge with big numbers."
That said, it's possible to justify the tactics-less battle nonsense in a story. Have it be a show of force from an arrogant leader who wants to shock-and-awe his prey. Or a vindictive bastard set on razing the place. Or a panicking villain on the back foot, hurling everything everywhere in hope something sticks.

@@BlackThreath1234 They have been making appearances in the alternative universes they've shown in movies like Doctor Strange 2 and The Marvels, none have been introduced in the main storyline/timeline as far as I know. Deadpool 3 is also bringing back Wolverine via the alternate universe/timeline thing. Basically being used as gimmicks right now because these characters were popular, and I'm guessing when they do introduce mutants in the main timeline (Kamala Khan is one, as revealed in her show), they will have new actors and new characters instead of being the same characters they were in the X-Men movies.
By telling their movie writers/directors to NOT read the comic book source material beforehand.
I don't remember anyone complaining when the people who did "Joker" did that...

While on the musical planet, they should have learned to use rhythm so they wouldn't step on each others toes while fighting. Would have made sense since coordination between the three is like ALMOST an obstacle to overcome.
This is why I despise studio meddling and test audiences. They got some bad feedback for the concept of a musical planet, so they shortened it instead of sticking to their guns and doing cool stuff with the concept. I don’t think the writers or directors are actually to blame in that regard. It’s a huge problem in the entertainment industry today.

Ben Mendelson's character is already dead which is established in the series Secret Wars. It really cements your critisism.
The problem with this movie is that it acts as a sequel of not one story but three separate stories.
And about the villain it was not just a badly written character but badly acted character as well. I really find it hard to look at the screen when the villain is there. Her expression, ridiculous costume, everything was a letdown.
I think the primary problem Marvel has, which you touch on here, is the interconnectivity issue and how large and bloated that's become. The first 3 phases of the MCU were manageable. There were about 2 movies a year to see, and each film was, mostly, self contained but enhanced greatly if you saw other films. The Avengers is a solid film in its own right, but its amazing if you saw the Iron Man, Cap, and Thor films - etc. There wasn't other media a person needed to follow, just the couple films a year. Now, to follow the MCU story, you need to watch the couple films a year, and the Disney+ series, and the Disney+ mini-series. The Marvel's viewers would know all about Ms. Marvel... if they watched the show. They'd know about Prof. Marvel... if they watched the first Cap. Marvel movie and watched Wandavision... they'd know about the Skruls if they watched the Nick Fury show. Etc. etc. etc. There is just so much content, and so much of it is mediocre, that it just isn't worth it anymore (I stopped watching myself over a year ago).
And then there's people like me, who doesn't have disney plus and has been left to rot because there's no way to understand the movies without it. Imagine my surprise and utter disappointment when I go to watch Dr. Strange 2 in theaters, expecting a continuation of DOCTOR STRANGE, just to not understand what the hell anyone was talking about because I didn't watch the tv show about wandavision. omfg.

Honestly, it's how I feel about the comics (DC and Marvel) in general. At a certain point, the universe becomes too big and bloated with characters and content that even dedicated fans will have a hard time keeping up. And that's even before getting into alternate timelines and alternate universes.
Yup. I loved the first Iron Man, it was uncomplicated and didn't require 40+ hours research and consuming other media to understand the plot. They only had references and teases/sequel bait relevant to Iron Man, like Terrence Howard commenting on the War Machine suit. The pacing was well thought out and didn't scream along at breakneck speed cuz they had 3 hours of backstory they needed to throw at you to understand the context of the movie.
It's ridiculous.
The MCU is going down the same path that has doomed the comics for most casual fans or “normies”. Unless you’re a die hard, most of us don’t have the patience to sit through hours of content or read through assorted storylines just to enjoy one thing. Don’t ever make your entertainment into homework.

The singing planet seems like such a blatant missed opportunity to me. Putting the characters in a "musical episode" (the one from Buffy the Vampire Slayer being the archetypal example) is a way to force them to express things (individually or between them) that they normally keep bottled up or otherwise conceal. People sometimes complain that Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers is too emotionless or generically snarky/confident all the time: great, now make her sing all the things she feels but doesn't talk about, e.g. she feels sad that her best friend died while she wasn't there, she feels she failed her honorary niece and doesn't know how to reconnect with her, she feels awkward around Kamala as another youngster who idolizes her, etc. Likewise, have Monica Rambeau sing about how angry she is at Carol, and have Kamala (who is a lot more emotionally expressive normally) help the other two express themselves, or express something she keeps hidden behind her exuberant fangirl persona (e.g. all this death and destruction freaking terrifies her).
Bam. You have an instant excuse to race to/through some of the key emotional beats of the story. Or...not.

I watched Wandavision and loved it, watched Falcon and Winter Soldier and thought it was pretty good, watched Loki and thought it was great, loved What If, thought Moon Knight was okay, watched Hawk-Eye and enjoyed it but the way they ruined Fisk let me know something was wrong...then She Hulk and Ms Marvel happened. Doctor Strange 2 and Black Panther 2 happened. I gave up.

About movies not being connected, that's something I liked about Guardians of the Galaxy. Yeah, maybe you should've watched the Christmas Special to understand that brief mention of Mantis being Peter's sister (and maybe Infinity War?), but the fact that it didn't tease any other Marvel product or that you didn't have to watch other things to fully enjoy it, I really liked.

The MCU decided to double down on asking the audience 'doing homework before they watch the movie' but, also decided to radically change Nick Fury's character from the tv series.
I've stopped caring about the MCU enough to watch the TV Shows, but I gotta say it's a bizarre decision to kill Maria Hill instead of Fury. (Not that Fury should've died on a TV Show instead of a movie.) Fury's usually cool, but Sam Jackson is both very expensive and 75 years old, so switching focus to a younger, cheaper actress seems like a more sound decision. (Also Maria Hill was director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics for most of my childhood, so if someone accuses the decision of being woke you can just call them a fake fan.)

I still think there was a great movie lost to the Marvel Vanilla Ice Cream, about the hubris of heroism as a purely individual affair and how such a pursuit would lead to losing everything dear to one, while achieving nothing positive in the end, with Captain Marvel having to let go of the unfulfilled past with the Rambeau's and embrace being a better mentor to Kamala through the insanely cool concept of literally placing them in each other's shoes to understand what kind of choices they had to take...
It could've even lead to a fantastic confrontation between Kamala, Carol and Monica with the Super Skrull, who uses the powers of others by himself as well as being the embodiment of Carol's failures!
This is exactly why a Secret Invasion plot should be a film worthy event instead of in a glorified miniseries. Either make it the plot for Captain Marvel 2/ The Marvel's or an New Avengers movie.
I have no idea why they fumbled the bag so hard there, Secret Invasion is one of THE Marvel comic book sagas and they made it into a miniseries. It'd be like having the entire Infinity Gauntlet arc be in a miniseries instead of an entire saga.

I feel this movie is the Batman & Robin for the MCU. It's not crampy it's corny, designs and suits in the movie made to sell toys, lacks any emotion, a story that's way too long and complicated, and it suffered for that at the box office. And much like the late 90s, comic book films were dead until Blade and X-Men came out. Hopefully Deadpool & Wolverine will be that for the MCU. 🙏

Unlikely. It's been 8 years since Deadpool, which means most of the people who watched the first one will be adults now with more mature senses of humour, in combination with meta humour fatigue. One thing I’ll say about She-Hulk is that it was self-contained. The Marvels and other movies really need you to have watched hours of each individual series (especially boring ass Secret -Wars- Invasion) to understand continuity coming in to the film. The lead up to Endgame really did capture lightning in a bottle.

When the avenger came out at first, i was excited because it was the first movie that i saw where the hero from another movie came together to fight villain. And the pacing of each movie from another, even tough kinda slow, it was great to build anticipation from its fans.
15:58 I belive that one "writers" thought it was the edgiest thing that could has ever being written for a villain motivation and no one would had ever thought that a civil war would reach such devastating consquences and felt very smart and unique about it... except that that level of destruction is just a mildly bad thursday in 40K.
It is them drawing from the source material. The AI Captain Marvel destroyed ran the machines that controlled their sun. So to have either the destruction of the AI, or for those machines to subsequently fail due to a civil war, are both justified.
That said, that that is the situation is something that should ideally be established beforehand, rather than just be an offhand comment.
There's nothing much to know about Ms. Marvel, except she's a fangirl of Capt. Marvel, just found her magic bracelets and got into The Avengers, all that is also valid for her comic and cartoon counterparts except for her powers, she's an inhuman in those and doesn't have magic bracelets, also, she's Sana Amhanat's self insert.
Well, in Universe Ms. Marvel is basically Kamala Khan's self-insert, so her being the writer's self-insert fits perfectly well.

If they put the scene of Captain Marvel going destroying the Supreme Intelligence and the effects of it, we would have better understanding of the villain and her goals.
That caviat towards keeps was brilliant and then you made the same mistakes as marvel. I love it.

See, what I've always believed is that the tv shows should be there to enhance and give extra context to the background of the movies. But they shouldn't be something that you need to watch to even make sense of the movies.
Treat it like "Better Call Saul" and "Breaking Bad." You don't NEED to watch Breaking Bad to make sense of "Better Call Saul" You can enjoy "Better Call Saul" just fine on its own. But watching "Breaking Bad" adds incredible context and layers that will change your views on the show.
And the same even applies to the other way around.
That's how it should be. It shouldn't be MANDATORY to watch all of those shows just to make sense of the movies.

A couple of corrections for you, just nit picks, the hammer the villain in Marvels wields was actually used by Ronin from Guardians Vol 1, and Beast is a mutant, not a blue alien lol, love your content keep up the great work
The movie is missing Narrative Logic. Even a story meeds to feel a certain inevitability; that the characters' backgrounds and interactions lead in some natural way to the unfoldiyof the story. As opposed to "just so" stories, as highlighted here.

Simple. Make an unlikable main character who nobody cares about. Have her team up with other unlikable nobodies to fight a toss-away villainess, and add random bullshit throughout the film. 😑
Well, Kamala was likeable, but basically had no role other than to stand there and be likable, with her role in the story going from "in the way" to, "less in the way".

Well, at the very least they sort of attempted making Captain Marvel less one-note by making her actually have a regret for once... They didn't do much with it, but at least its there. 😓

I haven't seen the movie, but from how you described why they keep swapping positions, shouldn't the villain be suffering from the same effects? She meets the exact same conditions.
The funny thing is... there were fans that were pissed that the MCU pre-Endgame didn't tie in the shows. Defenders, Inhumans, Agents of Shield, etc. (Ex. They wanted the Defenders to just show up out of nowhere in the Portals scene).
And now the MCU does, and people are pissed about it.
And I'm over here thinking the two should've stayed separated the whole time, to avoid the issues we have now.
It seems that people is not one being. Curious.
1. Ronan's introduction showed him in a sadistic/psychopathic monologue, followed by torturing a Xandarian and literally smashing his skull in with that hammer. Hence his hammer enforces his creed.
2. Thanos was revealed as the main villain that machinated the entire events up to the point of his entry, leading him to his famous "Fine, I'll do it myself", even then they added further depth to his debut appearance in Infinity War by literally beating the Hulk in. The Infinity Gauntlet wasn't made to be feared, but more seen as a fulcrum of Thanos's overall power, the Avengers still feared Thanos himself.
3. Dar-Benn's introduction didn't include anything sadistic, only finding a bracelet, as if that's so intimidating and scary, literal borrowed valor with the hammer.
4. The black woman was a mary sue from the start, smart, intelligent, have every convenient powers, etc. etc., it becomes boring when in some scenes she was portrayed as dumber than Miss Marvel, who is a literal kid.
5. Miss Marvel herself was decent, a young kid looking to learn and join the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D, there were some development concerns seeing as how she's made to run with the black lady and Captain Marvel, but overall she was chirpy, and I'd say one of the better parts of the movie.
6. Captain Marvel was dumbed down way too hard to make way for the black lady, the "swap" event was shown as a sad attempt to limit her power usage(if she was in a fight, she'd swap with a different 'captain marvel' which would be dangerous since they have a literal kid in the trio).
7. The whole thing between Captain Marvel and the black lady was just weird and unnecessary.
This was under my radar so fair point in that title 😅.

Also, our beloved heroes don’t look very formidable. For the first Captain Marvel movie, Brie Larson got into excellent shape. However, here, she barely fills out the suit.
Kamala and Professor Marvel also look like two regular women. Now, to be fair, their powers are energy-based … but, if we’re expected to believe that they’re capable of fighting trained alien soldiers, then they should also look like they’re doing some training of their own.
Basically, it just makes them look kind of ridiculous, almost like a parody … especially in the combat fight scenes.

3:50 I gotta say, the Hammer isn't from Malekith (Thor: The Dark World) it was from Ronan the Accuser (GotG) and it's a kree artifact. That is how it makes perfect sense for her to end up with it, although I thought it was destroyed at the end of it's film.
Something that isn't talked about is how super hero films of the past were focused almost exclusively on origin stories. Now Marvel and DC both barely care enough to describe how someone became a superhero. "I got my electromagnetic powers from a witch" "her sword traps the souls of its victims". Like, the coolest part of a superhero is watching them become a superhero, not just them being a hero.
