  • CAESAR, HIMARS, PzH 2000, Archer, M777, M109A6 Paladin and M109L. Western Artillery on the Ukrainian Front
    Description
    It is hard to overestimate the importance of artillery in modern warfare. Artillery has excellent firepower and can inflict massive damage on the enemy. It can be used to destroy military equipment and manpower, destroy defense structures, and disturb the enemy's logistical operations far behind the frontline.
    Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Western allies have transferred a lot of modern, effective artillery to Ukraine. See some of them in this video.

      There are crowd funding and collection of money from some Ukrainian and foreign groups to donate drones to the Ukrainian army plus Ukraine is starting to increase its weapon production .
      Things could change unexpectedly...Everything is possible...
      Remember that although money and arms do play a big role in a war but there is something that money alone and military power can not necessarily bring into life and that is the goodwill to live and evolve ...
      Sing the song of freedom
      And allow life to be
      created to all you and me
      Liberty coming above the sea ,
      Know the truth to set you free
      It is a better world for all to see
      Being reborn again is a key ...

    Being french, I could find this from french sources about CAESAR:
    IN 2022-2023 30 CAESAR were sent from France and Denmark (which first gave a few CAESAR, then changed its mind and gifted the entirety of its own order to Ukraine). Of those 30 vehicles, 5 have been destroyed since the beginning of the war.
    Since then France has announced that after having built new production lines its production has ramped from 2 per month to 8 per month at this point. At this point Ukraine has around 50 CAESARs, and France will deliver this year 78 more units to Ukraine.
    France has also announced that starting this year, it would build factories in western Ukraine to allow direct maintenance and parts productions in Ukraine, incuding for the CAESAR vehicles.

      @@_bearcat Great, even if they make 1000 a day, it wont make a difference UNTIL russians are firing 5:1 or so. France is producing some very small ammount of 155mm shells, so its not about guns and weapons but the ammo. Without ammo, those fancy SPGs and howitzers are nothing. So, you are telling they are building plants in Ukraine to maintain those systems - does that include shells or Ukraine will have to rely AGAIN on deliveries??? IF western countries REALLY want Ukraine to prevale, there would already be scores of such factories in western Ukraine. West ONLY wants this war to last as lon as possible, as they believe it will weaken Russia - but it failed and Russia ramped up its military production and its economy is in war-mode for 3 yrs. They ramped up production of t90M, t72 (with bunch of letters), cruise missiles, drones etc. But, biggest issue for UA are soldiers. Ukraine is just not capable anymore to replace nor rotate weared units on the frontline... I always supported weaker side, wheather its a fist fight or war. But this looks like alerady battered fighter that now has only left arm is trying to beat Mike Tyson in its prime and crowd supports armless fighter, whilst throwing drinks and snacks on Mike, prologing the inevitable KO.

      It was heartening to see the joy of the soldier. You would be very confident and happy giving such a machine to someone like him. They never explained fully what makes it so good. Id recommend googling it to see exactly why he likes it. A serious piece of artillery. That target was destroyed with one shot from a great distance. 1998 would be considered brand new compared with most of the stuff there

      Pretty new for artillery systems

    • @emptyforrest
      @emptyforrest Před 2 měsíci +2

      i mean. the vast majority of artillery systems are still somewhat "primitive". computer aiming and full automation is very new for artillery as they where previously deemed not be very accurate so computers wouldnt help that much, but as munition and computers also improved, it granted a much bigger leap in performance. as mentioned by the archer commander. it aims at targets, not grids. most artillery still targets grids, many of these grids are quite large and require heavy saturation to hit its intended target. so going from stationary manual artillery to the PZH2000 or the archer is like going from super props to afterburner capable jets. in a world where the vast majority of artillery are on super prop levels, PZH2000 being on the level of a F14 vs the archer being a F18, while one being better, both are so much better than the majority that they all end up on roughly the same level.

      @olekzajac5948 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@emptyforrest It's not uncommon in modern systems though, PzH 2000 isn't really unique - the Archer is capable of that as you mentioned, so is the Krab, K9 or the multiple Czech and Slovak wheeled SPGs (Morana, Zuzana 2 and so on).
      It's just that most of the artillery systems out there (by raw numbers, not by types) aren't that modern - a lot of countries still use the M109 which is a very obsolete system, comparable to the Soviet 2S3.

Rocket capacity is double of the Himars, but speed (hit and scoop is the key here) is about half. Range is the same as the ammo used is also the same used on the M142 Himars. Much more interesting than the weapons systems that everyone is talking about are the ones that are kept secret. For example, the COBRA artillery radar that Germany supplied. Is it destroyed or in operation? If it hasn't been destroyed yet but no news can be found, it is probably worth the effort to keep it secret. Himars is all well and good but you don't hear or see anything about the M270s. Are they so bad or good that you hardly know anything about them? And many others.

    • @ArKritz84
      @ArKritz84 Před 2 měsíci

      This video is about artillery systems, not radars. M270 is using the same pod as HIMARS, but it's 27 years older. UA are under no obligation to provide videos of ANYTHING to the public, and providers of them and of radar systems especially may indeed have demanded they keep them out of the public eye.

    I read that the biggest advantage of the towed M777 is that it is much lighter than other similar howitzers. This allows more M777 to be put on a transport aircraft , or to be sling loaded by a helicopter. I don't think Ukraine is air transporting the M777 much, but the light weight must make ground handling easier too.

    • @57thorns
      @57thorns Před 2 měsíci +4

      Ground handling is not so much an issue with tracked vehicles, or the arches articulated mid steering, all these vehicles have a very low ground pressure. However, the M777 is probably less expensive which makes it available in larger numbers.

      @@TankandDimples that along with the problem that the crew is not protected makes it a problem. I think it is surely one of the best in the world, better then Caesar or M109 or M 777 and so on. I do not know why they didn't put the AS 90 on the list, because it is also one of the best in the world. The mrsi is also not the best with 3 shots compared to 5 or 6. It is a great system but doesn't fit heavy combat situations on a more flat ground. The PZH 2000 can shoot 5 times in mrsi, can shoot a distance of up to 75 km and is able to shoot 10 shells per minute untill the magazine of 60 rounds is empty. In combat situations against Tank battalions or so, it is not good to be unprotected even if you are 20 km away. Yes it is a great system but why didnt they make a cabin for the crew that would be so much better and safer.

    a shell cost 800$-5000$ + the artillery pieces, Drones are still cheaper so good chance that even artillery gets replaced by drones. As soon as they can add some simple ai for the final targetting, incase of jamming. You only need drones even seen jet powered drones that can act as air defence.

    • @jugurt7624
      @jugurt7624 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Their proficiency doesn't really matter, because CAESARs are usually already on the move when the first shell hits, thus counterfire will just hammer an empty position.
      "Tailored for shoot-and-scoot tactics, the CAESAR is fast to set up, taking around 60 seconds for the crew to be ready to fire and 40 seconds to leave after the shots. It can fire six rounds per minute."
      All artillery systems have their perks, but if I had to pick one for the job, the CAESAR would be it. Hits as far & hard as the others, but fundamentally easier to operate, maintain & repair, lower profile & operational footprint, and most mobile of all. CAESARs are the kind of artillery you need for 21st century warfare. The others are either too static, or over-engineered.

    • @jugurt7624
      @jugurt7624 Před 2 měsíci

      @@nian60 Absolutely, but what I pointed out is the issue of mobility AND/OR over-engineering, depending on the system. Archers fall in the second category, without providing significant/mission critical benefits over the CAESAR.
      All these systems may have their place on the battlefield, but imo the French took the most balanced & operationally sensible path with their artillery piece.
